I know, I know, guys like him are hard to find. But a RB who is both a talented runner and an excellent receiver out of the backfield would take the Bills' passing game to an even higher level (not to mention the running game). The Bills' passing game is awesome, but it's awfully reliant on WRs. Is there anyone with a Kamara profile in this year's draft? If not, Kenyon Drake--a free agent who turns 27 today--would be my target. He's not Kamara, but his game is similar, and he probably has 2-3 good years left in him.

probably should also invest in an OC that is going to use both the RB and TE in the passing game to make the pick worthwhile

I understand what you are saying, but at what point do you draw the line in the sand? Does the organization need to seek out their approval at every turn or over every decision? This is where the problem lies imo. You give them an inch and they will take a mile. A player has the right to sign or refuse a contract. They can get to the end of one and, if they are a high enough caliber player, position themselves to go wherever they choose. Kirk Cousins did that, not that I think Kirk is anywhere near the level of player as the aforementioned. Both Watson and Wilson signed contracts for big $$$. Now they are frustrated with their respective organizations. There are GM's, scouts, coaches, and other personnel within an organization who are in charge of building the team you sign a contract to play for. I understand the wanting to have a say, but players are players, coaches are coaches, and FO is the FO. Yes they can speak their mind, but you can't cater to one person putting on the uniform for the sake of coddling. You start letting people veer out of their lanes or have people overstepping their bounds into other areas because that person feels they know best then it's almost a certain recipe for disaster. That's just my 2.

if "input"  was so important to these guys, they should have negotiated the scope of the role and these additional features into their newly signed, big money contracts.

right next to the language that would forfeit large chunks of money for "bad input"

I expect the Bills to try to restructure nearly everyone as well. Even guys normally not approached, will likely be approached. Rough year for everyone,  and dang the salary cap, we don't even know what shape the Pegula's are in with actual liquid cash after a year like this.

I'd also get Star in ASAP for a physical whenever we can. Guy is uncuttable virtually this year, but we need to know if he's still a football player and going to be a contributor.

highly doubtful they kick the can on players who are not considered long term core pieces

    most will not get restructued

this a long term roster building plan - not to be screwed up with knee jerk short term "fixes"

I think we see a lot of pay cuts.  I think it’d be kind of harsh to cut some of these guys.  Hard to judge a guy negatively off last year.  And these guys could’ve decided to opt out.  I think you find a way to keep them at a reduced number.

only keep guys if you can't get better replacements

    no sentimental attachments

This is just me spit-balling here-- but I have a feeling they are going to really shake things up on both sides of the ball (get more speed at WR; get more beef on the interior line; and get more physicality and speed in the front 7 on defense). That may mean letting some of the fan favorites walk (Brown, Williams, Addison, Feliciano, Morse, Milano).  I could be totally wrong-- but I don't think that last game sat well with McBeane.

    Bills will  keep OT Williams

Beane will also be prepared to make some serious moves if necessary to obtain other team's cap casualties that would result in significant improvement in the areas you mention

Uconn, you know what’s funny is on NFL Matchup, this exact problem of a QB continuing to go back to evade pressure vs. stepping into the pocket is what guess who...  Oat Mahomes.  Cosell and crew were stating Mahomes makes it very difficult to block for him because when he keeps going backward, it’s easier for edge rushers to get around the tackles to get to him.  The point of the clip was KC does have some flaws, amd this is one of them.  The problem is we didn’t have the rushers to get to Mahomes, but KC did have the juice.

The point was not Mahomes has flaws to me, but Allen needs to step into the pocket and not think he can always evade the rush vs. all too often feel he can use his athleticism to get out of trouble. The problem is for many teams, his strategy works and thus reinforces bad behavior.  We go ooh,  aww, and we should be thinking, what are you stupid, step into the pocket.  It also symbolizes we needed healthy WR’s out there.  Playing all of the guys with an oblique, knee, ankle, broken leg was a mistake.  Diggs would’ve been ok, but we should’ve considered Still and McKenzie. Replace them with two of the other guys.

in order to step up into the pocket, you cannot your OG being thrown into your face on every play

take note on things to fix for 2021

Couldn’t agree more. Daboll has games where he looks brilliant, and then he has games like this where it just seems like he’s trying to force something that’s not working and its really just painful to watch.

But it also begs the question, is Daboll just being stubborn or is it that he knows his lineman can’t run block worth a damn? Maybe its both...

stop telegraphing running plays by personel and formation and run out of spread formations and multiple WR sets

That because of COVID some true in their prime stars are going to be on the market this year with teams like the Saints 112 million over the cap for starters much less Eagles, Rams, even the Raiders have major cap issues so waiting to release a veteran till later in the off season because you

might be able to get a good player on a 1 year come try to win a ring in Buffalo deal seems like a good strategy

teams over the cap now can not wait to cut big ticket players

moves will need to be made before day 1 to get under the cap

also means Bills may make some early moves to enable quick bargain hunting

Josh dropping back and slinging it a zillion times works when he is facing teams that cannot get to him and stop the run with their front d-linemen and are not able to drop everyone else into coverage effectively.

Sure Allen had an MVP caliber season, but teams that could generate pressure with their front 4 and still leave 2 safeties back deep and field DBs across the shallow zones were able to give him his worst games. No open receivers, holding the ball too long, pressure in his face, and costly sacks and incompletions.

Having the ability to run the ball, does not mean that you run the ball all the time and that Allen cannot sling it. There is this illogical fear that being able to run means that our offense is going to use 12 personnel and pound it 50% of the time and that is not the case. It means that you have the legit threat that you can run the ball when you need to. When teams have great coverage and can generate pressure, or when some of your key receiving threats are dinged up, you can dictate their defense and slow their pass rush.

KC uses 12 personnel and has the option to run or hit their TE's usually 30%-35% of the time, but no one thinks of them as a running team. They can when they need to. When we did to them what they did to us and took away all their receivers what did they do? They ran all over us.

When teams go into a split-deep safety look and flood the field with defensive backs leaving the box virtually empty we should be able to run against that and force them to change their defensive posture or personnel. It means that when their d-line is pinning its ears back to rush Allen they now have to tap the brakes to ensure a runner does not slip past them.

When they have to change how they play us, it opens up the intermediate passes and play-action passes deep with no help over the top. It also keeps Allen from taking a lot of unnecessary hits from defensive linemen who have no reason to slow down.

Allen having an MVP season is great, but it is not the goal. The team winning it all is the goal.

In the championship games against more complete teams you have to be able to make good on the threat of being able to run on them if they are cheating their personnel towards coverage and pass rush. It was the legit threat of KC running the ball along with their deep passing threat that kept the Bills in an ineffective defensive purgatory of having to keep enough guys in the box and leave enough deep which left a lot of open green in between.

Bills could have radically improved the running game thru scheme, formation and play calling

    - run at some draw plays to the backs

    -reverses

    - stop telegraphing run plays by formations

-run out of spread sets & 4 Wide

all would have helped with no big change in personnel

Agree with a lot of this.

To the bold, I almost think that' one task. If they Bills improve the interior OL the running game will be more efficient/effective. I don't want the Bills running more because I'd prefer the ball stayed in Joshs hand but if they ran more effectively when they did, it would help.

Only thing I would add beyond the pass rush is I think they need another weapon in the pass game for Josh. And I'm thinking it needs to be TE.

how would a better  TE (even super star level) help when the Bills refuse to throw any TE the ball

Knox was open all game long and could have had a huge game just falling down at point of catch.

but he can run and make big plays - we just don't try to get him the ball

Seems pretty asinine on its face considering how well the OLine pass protected almost all year long, but let me float this out there.

The Bills have one objective for the next decade.  Do whatever they need to so they can beat KC.  Anything or anyone that hinders their ability to do this needs to be changed or replaced.  The Bills faced the Chiefs twice this season. First time the OLine had its worst game of the year.  OK, it must be a one off. Allen got pressured 55% of his dropbacks.  It happens, they must have done something we were not expecting.  Then we play them again in the playoffs and once again the OLine looks terrible and Allen is pressured the most in any playoff game since ESPN started tracking pressures in 2009 at 47% of his dropbacks.  Now it is becoming a trend. We can't block KC properly.

So either KC is suddenly the Steel Curtain against us and well below average against the rest of the league or our OLine is not being properly coached to block what they are doing. I recognize that against the 31 other teams in the league our OLine is pretty damn good, picking up blitzes with ease and giving Allen a lot of time most games. But none of that matters anymore.  We are in a position where if someone is hindering our ability to win a game against KC no matter how good they are against the rest of the league in helping us win, they have to go.

That was the biggest reason for the loss in the KC game. Allen was under constant pressure all game long.  Can't have it. Not against a team that normally isn't good at it. They need to figure it out and fast, and if Bobby Johnson can't help get this problem fixed then he has to go because we cannot play KC again and give ourselves no shot in the game due to letting a poor pass rushing team look like the 1985 Bears.

whoever failed to scheme up a double team on Jones needs to be on the hot seat

This is the correct line of thinking that all plans must be to beat the main competition

However, also need to ensure that the same methodology is used to win the division every year

won't even get to the Chiefs if we don't win the division

MB, you make a good point in that instead of they had no fear, Allen should’ve thrown to the RB’s and TE’s and take what they were giving us, or he runs.  That’s why he ran for just under 100 yards.  That was a good decision, but we have to trust our RB’s and TE’s.  Not using Yeldon more was a mistake.  He should’ve been our primary back Sunday evening.  Knox caught some passes, but I said last year we should’ve made a bigger push for Hooper. He’s no Kelce, but we also had a chance with Ertz.

TE is a glaring need for this team.   Knox can be a decent second TE, but we need a true #1.

"use" of the TE is the glaring problem

Knox should have had 15 targets

even falling down, they would have moved the chains

however, they should have hit him on slants and down the seam as well

I agree with you.. saw this as well during the game.  KC sped up the game with their D-line and a few blitzes and Josh's eyes weren't quick enough to get him out of trouble. So he ended up throwing a few high incompletions to the sidelines (which would not have gained much yardage anyway)...a few sacks when he just held the ball forever...a few throw away's.  In the first half i wanted more scrambles but I'm sure both Daboll and Allen wanted to crank up the passing game and kinda' forced it.  This is one of those games we can revisit and "what-if" all day, but the bottom line is that KC has better personnel on both sides of the ball.

Right now Mahomes is just better than Allen at the quick decisions when things go south in the pocket.  Plus he has better athletes to sling the ball to...but i have to credit Mahomes.  He's the best right now.

much easier for KC when Bills were playing soft zone leaving guys wide open

    3 hours ago, 78thealltimegreat said:

Exactly Brady would have had a field day with just a few pre snap adjustments getting their RBs the ball in space Josh will learn after watching this

If you watch how easy they allowed Knox to release and Singletary out of the backfield they had zero fear these guys could do anything after they got the ball

we allowed Kelce free release too

maybe fear of consequences was not the driving reason
