Column: Bills’ pattern of close-out struggles continues

‘Sunday marked the seventh time this season they have allowed second-half leads to shrink or disappear.’

Column: Defense might be trending up after rescuing offense after turnover spree

‘“It’s obviously a sign of a good team when one side of the ball’s not doing their job, the other side can pick it up,” quarterback Josh Allen said. “It’s a three-phase game, and I think we won two of those phases today. I wouldn’t say we lost on the offensive side, but there’s plenty of opportunities that we had that we didn’t take advantage of.”’

Analysis: Cole Beasley recaptures prep heroics on Bills’ trick-play TD

‘Beasley was a star option quarterback for Little Elm High School in the Dallas, Texas, area. As a senior in 2007, he rushed for 1,184 yards and 12 touchdowns and passed for 1,570 yards and 12 touchdowns in leading the Lobos to the playoffs.’

10 observations: Josh Allen provides a little bit of everything in Bills’ win

‘“I play with my heart on my sleeve and let the emotions get the best of me,” Allen said. “I can’t do that and put our team in jeopardy and lose 15 yards on the kickoff. I’ve got to be better than that.”’

Singletary: Running game ‘can do even better’ after breaking out vs. Chargers

‘“It was kind of like half-speed,” Singletary said. “But seeing the guys get to their landmark, that helps us with our landmark, and just kind of helps the offensive line and the running backs get a feel for each other, and it showed today.”’

Quarter by quarter: Bills close out a good win that might have been a rout

‘The Bills’ third-quarter struggles didn’t continue, as each team managed one touchdown drive. The Bills entered the game with the fourth fewest points in the league in the third quarter. Now, they’ve been outscored 84-37.’

Report Card: Run-game improvements – offensive and defensive – show up in Bills’ win

‘Let’s start with the obvious – McDermott better start practice in the coming week with some work against the Hail Mary. It’s inconceivable the defense has allowed that play to be completed in consecutive games.’

Bills offense tried to blow it with 3 straight turnovers, but Buffalo tops Chargers 27-17

‘Thankfully for the Bills, they were playing a team that specializes in finding ways to lose, and when the gun sounded, the Bills were on the positive end of a 27-17 score that improved their record to 8-3 and kept them one game ahead of the pesky Miami Dolphins in the AFC East.’

Report card: Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills won’t apologize for ugly win over Chargers

‘The Bills are now 4-0 coming off their bye week under Sean McDermott. Maybe that’s just a coincidence, but I think it shows that he and his staff do a decent job of self-scouting with the time off and his team comes back ready to play. Now, this wasn’t the cleanest performance you’ll ever see, but as Allen alluded to, they got the win and that’s what matters most.’

It wasn’t pretty, but Bills got a needed win

‘Still, while there were some reasons for encouragement in Buffalo’s performance, there were also some circumstances creating genuine concern.’

Bills snap four game slide vs. Chargers

‘The win ended a four-game losing streak against the Chargers, with Buffalo having last beaten them in 2008.’

Bills defense shines vs. Justin Herbert, Buffalo holds off Chargers for 8th win (Instant observations)

‘The game was never really close despite the Bills’ inability to put the Chargers away. The main attraction was the showdown between Bills quarterback Josh Allen and Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. Neither passer had their best game and the opposing defensive lines were a big reason why.’

Bills’ A.J. Klein continues to shine vs. Chargers (9 reasons to be encouraged, 2 reasons to be worried)

‘Klein was all over the field on Sunday and finished the game with a team-leading 14 tackles, 1.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, two QB hits and one pass defensed.’

Bills defense carries team to win over Chargers (Week 12 report card)

‘Two turnovers when you have the chance to put a team away is never a good thing, but the QB added two scores of his own (1 passing, 1 rushing).’

Bills vs. Chargers Inactives: TE Tyler Kroft, DE Trent Murphy inactive

‘Kroft is the biggest surprise as he has been Buffalo’s most consistent tight end. With Kroft out of the lineup, Buffalo will be looking for Dawson Knox to step up as a pass catcher. Although highly athletic, Knox has struggled with catching the ball in his short career with the Bills. Reggie Gilliam and Lee Smith are also active at the position.’

Five takeaways: Bills defeat Chargers despite number of mistakes; Buffalo defense, running game steps up

‘Buffalo’s secondary returned numerous players to the lineup this week, and it showed, as they were able to keep Herbert and the Chargers’ passing game off balance throughout the day. The Bills’ front also played well, sacking Herbert three times and performing well in the run game. The Bills held LA to just 76 rushing yards on 24 carries and came up with a game-sealing turnover, an interception by cornerback Tre’Davious White which came with 5:17 to go.’

Sullivan: Bills return to old script in ugly win

‘Yeah, the standard has been raised with this team, as I’ve been saying all year. Even in victory, the Bills do things that make you wonder if they’re capable of a serious run in January, or if they’re a fatally flawed squad that will break your heart in the end.’

Bills Hang On In Sloppy 27-17 Win Over Chargers

‘A game between two of the NFL’s top young quarterbacks was instead overshadowed by defense.’

Buffalo Bills, Cole Beasley get tricky to extend lead over Los Angeles Chargers

‘Beasley joins fellow Bills receiver Isaiah McKenzie as the only non-quarterbacks to throw for a touchdown this season. The rest of the NFL has three such passes this season, according to ESPN Stats & Info.’

Cole Beasley throws TD pass as Bills get tricky; second receiver to throw TD pass for Buffalo in 2020

‘Allen and Bills running back Devin Singletary immediately congratulated Beasley on his accomplishment. Beasley, who was an option quarterback in high school, was converted to a wide receiver at Southern Methodist University. He had previously attempted only three passes in his NFL career, both were incompletions. Beasley’s last pass in the NFL was in 2018 with the Dallas Cowboys while his other attempt was in 2016.’

Bills fend off Chargers for 27-17 victory

‘Most eyes were on the quarterback matchup between Buffalo’s Josh Allen and Los Angeles rookie, and sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Justin Herbert, but the contest didn’t end up being the shootout many expected.’

Opinion: Three observations: Run game gets going in Bills’ win over Chargers

‘The run game seemed to finally come alive for Buffalo. The defense made big stops when needed. Tyler Bass was perfect again in the field goal kicking department. Andre Roberts had a few nice returns.’

Opinion: Just how good is this Bills team?

‘Sunday’s 27-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers felt more lucky than it did ugly. But I assure you, it had plenty of both, at times, en route to the Buffalo Bills’ eighth victory of the season to maintain their one-game lead over the Miami Dolphins for the AFC East lead.’

Opinion: Welcome back, old friends

‘I’ll bet many of you expected the Buffalo Bills to beat the Los Angeles Chargers. I’ll bet few of you thought the Bills’ running game and their defense would be the two main reasons why they recorded their eighth win in 11 games.’

Opinion: Arrow Up/Arrow Down: Chargers at Bills

‘The Bills finally got the kind of production they’ve been looking for out of the running game, rushing for 172 yards overall on 30 carries, averaging 5.7 yards per-run. They were particularly good running the ball after halftime, amassing 117 yards on 6.64 yards per-run in the second half.’

Bills top Chargers 27-17 for 8th win of season, maintain one-game lead in AFC East

‘The Bills defense came up with a huge stop to start the 4th quarter after the Chargers, going for it on 4th down inside the Bills 30-yard line, were stopped short and turned it over on downs. The Bills offense had their own issues though with three turnovers on seven plays. But just when the Chargers could tie the game at 24-24, Tre’Davious White came up with a big interception that later led to a 43-yard field goal from Tyler Bass to make it a 27-17 game.’

Bills overcome fourth quarter mistakes in win against Chargers

‘”I think the good teams are able to finish with wins,” safety Micah Hyde said. “We did that today. So you could say we didn’t finish, but obviously, we did, we got the win.”‘

Defense steps up in Bills’ 27-17 win over Chargers

‘”The mindset never changes. Once we’re out there, it’s all about taking the ball away and trying to get the offense back to the offense with good field position,” safety Micah Hyde said. “The defense was making plays in the second half, and that’s what we needed.”‘

Bills hold on to beat Chargers 27-17

‘The Chargers throw a late Hail Mary with just a few seconds left in the game, but clock mismanagement by LA leads to nothing, despite being on the one yard line.’

Bills need to close out games during final stretch of regular season

‘“That doesn’t sit well with me and the great part about it honestly is it doesn’t sit well with our team, the players and the coaches. It’s one thing for me to get upset about it but at the end of the day it’s about clear expectations and our players have a great understanding for what we want and honestly what wins in this league and you can’t do that to yourself,” Bills head coach Sean McDermott said after the game.’

Bills running game takes step in the right direction vs. Chargers

‘“Our guys did a great job, Zack and Motor carried the ball extremely well, they ran hard. When my number’s called I gotta make some plays too but our guys did a good job blocking up front and you put the ball in your backs’ hands and let them do things and they were great today,” Bills quarterback Josh Allen said.’

Bills defense steps up when needed in second half

‘Buffalo held L.A. to a field goal after the first turnover, a three-and-out after the second one, and forced their own interception following a Josh Allen pick in the 4th.’

Josh Allen says they ‘left a lot out there’ offensively after missed opportunities vs. Chargers

‘“It’s a sign of a good team when one side of the ball is not doing their job and the other side can pick it up. It’s a three phase game and I think we won two of those phases today and I wouldn’t say we lost on the offensive side but there’s plenty of opportunities that we had that we didn’t take advantage of,” Allen said.’

4 Observations: Bills win 27-17

‘Was it a thing of beauty? Nope. Was it a win? Yep.’

Bills defense comes up big late, flusters Herbert, Chargers

‘Buffalo was plagued by penalties and turnovers and the Bills offense survived, but looking ahead these types of mistakes can’t happen when facing teams such as the San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers in December.’

Bills run game improves in Week 12 win over Chargers

‘What’s even more impressive, is when you consider the Bills offensive line changing things up again last week after losing lineman Cody Ford to a torn meniscus for the rest of the season.’

Chargers vs. Bills Game Day: Buffalo takes control early in win

‘Josh Allen is picked off by Michael Davis for the Bills third turnover of the game. Tre’Davious White returns the favor, intercepting a Justin Herbert pass, for the Bills to take over at their own 35.’

Bills ugly win over Chargers all about finding options

‘Let’s get this right out of the way… the Hail Mary defense still needs lots of work.’

10 Bills Red Hot Takeaways from win over Chargers

‘There is an old saying in golf that the card is small , so there is room for a score not a story. But this isn’t golf. We can tell a story from this game. The offense made a lot of mistakes including turnovers, penalties and the inability to block Joey Bosa. That 4th quarter ended up being comical but it did not seem funny when they kept giving the Chargers the ball back.’
