Bills sign Sean McDermott to multi-year contract extension

‘McDermott was hired by the Bills back in January of 2017 after spending six seasons as the defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers. The Bills have made the postseason in two of his three seasons in charge, including breaking a franchise-long 17-year playoff drought in 2017, his first season as head coach. McDermott is 25-23 overall in his three seasons as the head coach in Buffalo.’

‘Hauschka had a rough start to last season, but finished strong. Over the first nine games, he was only 8-for-13 on field goal attempts and also missed an extra point. Over the final seven games, he was 14-for-15 on field goals. The Bills actually put in a waiver claim on kicker Chase McLaughlin in early December after he was waived by the San Francisco 49ers, but the Indianapolis Colts had a higher waiver priority and were awarded McLaughlin, who was with the Bills during training camp. So it’s clear the Bills were at least looking to bring in some competition for Hauschka, who had a nice bounce-back second half. His leg doesn’t seem to have the strength it did even just a couple years ago. After going 7-for-9 on field goals of 50-yards or more in 2017, he’s only 5-for-12 over the last two years, including only 1-for-5 last season.’

‘McDermott, 46, has led the Bills to two playoff appearances in three seasons as the head coach. While with the Bills, McDermott has a 25-23 record. He was set to enter the fourth year of his five-year contract this season, after signing with the Bills in 2017. He becomes the first head coach to earn a second contract with the Bills since Dick Jauron in 2009.’

‘Wallace wasn’t selected in the 2018 draft, signed with the Bills as an undrafted free agent and worked his way into a starting job. Wallace says it’s all part of playing football.’

‘“My preference is to do whatever the team needs. I’m not gonna sit here and pick and choose my position. The coaches are going to put the best five on the field and whoever they feel that it is and whatever positions they think everybody needs to play. They’re gonna make the ultimate decision, it’s not up to me at all,” Ford said on a zoom call with reporters.’

‘While Ford survived, he did not emerge unscathed. He had surgery on his shoulder the week after the season ended. He was in Buffalo rehabbing until March and felt fortunate that the important part of the rehab was pre-pandemic.’

‘“I think I hit a 75 (yard kick). I didn’t record it. I just hit it on a really windy day back home. It went in and I was like ‘all right’,” Bass said. “I would say 75 is my farthest, but I’ve hit 70 multiple times.”’
