3rd rounders

I had no idea that third round picks existed only since 1999.

To completely and accrurately assess the success/failure of 3rd round picks would mean going back through the entire history of the NFL draft, not just the years that serve your argument. Go back twenty years and evaluate and then get back to me, okay?

Also, the problem with this theory, once again, is you are making the assumption that we will simply and only use this for a third round pick. That, of course, makes it so much easier to make your argument accurate.

But why do you only look at it one-dimensionally? Yes, it's a third round pick, but it can also be bundled and/or traded to a better position or for a player to be named later. Can a second and an extra third get you a first? Can an extra third and a player get you a first? How can anybody take the time to be critical of this move without understanding this very simple, basic concept?

Travis Henry = limited options. Third round pick = many more options.

Please evaluate all third-round draft picks in the history of the NFL and then return to this argument.

What IS the point of these threads?  Are we NOW saying that TD shouldn't have traded Travis?  Or that TD should have gotten more?  Jeez.  Unreal.

Some people don't realize what exactly conditional means... I guess.

Someone wanted to know what a typical 3rd rounder was. Those links provide it for recent years where you can get a feel for it.

No opinion was made. Settle down. It's amazing how uptight so many of you are.

Aside from this being a silly argument from the point that we needed to trade Travis Henry regardless of for who or what, you post isn't exactly accurate. Taking the Bills for example, during the stretch you posted. Their picks were as follows:

1999: Shaun Bryson

2000: Corey Moore

2001: Ron Edwards/Jonas Jennings

2002: Coy Wire.

Bryson contributed for his duration in Buffalo. Was outclassed by Henry when he got here and lost his job, but none the less he was a good pick up in the third round.

Corey Moore. failed in the NFL

Ron Edwards is a guy most people on this board expect to be a HUGE contributor to this team this year. Possibily a starter.

Jonas Jennings just signed a HUGE deal out in SF. Started and earned league wide recognition for his ability.

Coy Wire. Solid ST's guy who is a work in progres at safety.

All in all you have serviceable player in the 3rd round for 4 of five players. You expect a player to be solid and to contribute in the third round.

To say that all 3rd rounders miss in inaccurate. It just depends on your expectations.

A lineup from just the 3rd round of those 4 drafts...

QB: Josh McCown

RB: Brian Westbrook and/or Kevan Barlow

FB: Rueben Droughns

WR: Steve Smith

WR: Darrell Jackson

WR: Laveranues Coles (and we have Marty Booker to bring in on 3rd downs, too)

TE: Erron Kinney

LT: Jonas Jennings

RT: Kareem McKenzie

G: Zach Piller

G: Rex Tucker

C: Casey Rabach or Seth McKinney

DE: Reggie Hayward

DE/OLB: Chike Okeafor

DT: Cletidus Hunt

DT: Darwin Walker

OLB: Joey Porter (a Donahoe 3rd round pick)

MLB: Dat Nguyen

OLB: Ben Leber

CB: Mike McKenzie

CB: Will Peterson

Nickel Corner: Dwight Smith

SS: Adrian Wilson

FS: Greg Wesley

A 3rd round pick is an extremely valuable commodity...you can get great players, you just have to have a reliable system that's capable of finding them. Many of these guys have played in Pro Bowls..i don't think a team with this as it's lineup would do any worse than 8-8.
