Dont Stop Billeiving Posted September 25, 2015 Share Posted September 25, 2015 Second installment of my weekly attempts to scout our next opponent. I went through the Dolphins-Jags All-22 on my NFL GamePass over the last two days and came up with the following observations. Trying something different this week in using a sort of ongoing timeline format. Note: no idea how to make GIFs or anything like that so apologies. Any thoughts or ideas to improve my analysis/review would be much appreciated. Go Bills! Dolphins Recap: Bortles did not have a good stat line in Week 1 vs Carolina (barely over 50% CP, two INTs including a pick six). Former Bills: Sam Young starter at LT (with Luke Joeckel out)for the Jags. Kelvin Sheppard is the starting MLB for Miami. Dolphins gave up 161 rushing yards vs Washington in Week 1. Jags have a backup FS playing SS. 100 degrees on the field. Tons of Dolphins fans at the game…might be 50-50, not much of a home field advantage for Jacksonville. First Quarter Allen Hurns beats Brice McCain for a 16 yard catch and run, McCain misses the tackle. Bortles to Allen Robinson for a 25+ yard strike beating Brent Grimes in coverage over the middle. Yeldon runs right past Suh up the middle and scores from 5 yards out…overturned by replay, 1st down at the 1. Reshad Jones isn’t blocked and stuffs Yeldon for a two yard loss…early standout for the Dolphins with a few early plays, strong in run support. Jags score on their 1st drive, Robinson beats McCain on a quick slant for the TD Tannehill throws a duck on the Dolphins’ first offensive play…maybe should have been picked, instead it gets tipped in the air and caught by Rishard Mathews for a 48 yard gain. Good throw by Tannehill to a wide open Greg Jennings and he drops it…Miami settles for a field goal. 7-3 Jags Jags get a 9 yard run up the middle by Denard Robinson to start their second drive…Robinson gets hurt and is out for the game. Walt Aikens and Koa Misi combined to tackle Yeldon in the backfield for a loss. Robinson beats McCain again for a 54 yard catch…McCain never got the head around, terrible coverage. Jags having lots of success running right up the middle…this Miami defense not impressing so far. Bortles misses a throw, Jags get a FG to go up 10-3. Miami’s second drive…short passes, Miller not having any luck running the ball. Tannehill with a big overthrow on 3rd down, Dolphins go 3 and out. Marquise Lee runs a nice reverse for 11 yards, Suh hustles downfield and makes the tackle. Jags not double teaming Suh at all though, cut blocking him a lot…Earl Mitchell (their other DT) actually getting more pressure on the QB than anyone else on their D-line at this point. Second Quarter Brandon Albert gets hurt, taken off to sideline…Tannehill takes two big hits from the Jags D-linemen soon after. Tannehill gets a nice gain on a designed QB sweep to the right that we will have to watch out for. Jelani Jenkins with a nice TFL on Yeldon. Miami leaving tons of room for Bortles to run…rushes for 26 yards on 3rd down, Miami D can’t get off the field. Miami looks susceptible to the draw play too. Suh sits out a few plays with a hyper extended knee. Bortles steps up in the pocket (hint hint Tyrod) and throws a bomb to Robinson for a TD…burns Aikens and the CB who was playing zone with a double move. Robinson’s stat line in the 1st 20 minutes of this game: 5 catches, 145 yards, and 2 TDs…ridiculous Jacksonville looks…good. When do we start considering that they might not be a joke anymore? Offense looks great, defense average. Cameron with a couple more nice receptions…runs a lot of wheel routes and can beat most LBs in coverage. Albert hurt again and limps off the field…doesn’t return for the rest of the game. Tannehill eludes pressure, rolls left, and hits Damien Williams for a short TD…looked good in the two minute drill… Franks misses a FG for Miami at end of 1st half. Jags hit a few quick passes and then tack on a 58 yard FG with no time left…20-13 Jags at the half. Third Quarter Miller looks dangerous on a screen pass…then Landry with a 36 yard catch over the middle…we need to shut him down, have Gilmore shadow him? He has a frachise record 11 straight games with 5+ catches. JaJuan James (the Dolphins right tackle) looks very shaky…beaten a couple times and responsible for 3-4 penalties as well. Jags backup safety is a weak link allowing some big plays, burned for a TD by Stoneburner to tie the game. Miami still hasn’t forced a three and out. Jags WRs running open on every play. Suh looks slow and lethargic, no sign of explosiveness that we're used to. Miller has just 14 rushing yards through 3 quarters. Kenny Stills makes his first catch (a 5 yarder) with 20 seconds left…most talkative guy on the field though which always drives me nuts. Drive amounts to nothing…20 all at the end of the 3rd qtr. Fourth Quarter Tannehill is the Dolphins leading rusher at this point with 17 yards… Pressure gets to Tannehill on a CB blitz and he throws it away on 3rd down…Miami punts. Miami takes an intentional delay of game penalty and the announcer says that the Jags should decline…interesting point that I’d never heard before. Be fun to see Rex do that and play mind games with people. Jags drop two passes and Miami finally gets a 3 and out…Jags offense has stalled the last few drives, but mostly due to self-inflicted mistakes. Cool play…Nick Marshall (former Auburn QB and hero, now an undrafted CB who made the team) blows up Landry on a punt return. JaJuan James literally watches Sergio Brown run by him while blocking no one else and take down Tannehill for the game’s first sack by either team. Rishard Mathews with a sneaky 100+ yard game…lots of short routes, hopefully Robey or Darby can win this match up. Suh makes his first real play on the day (a 1 yard TFL) with 9 min remaining in the game and proceeds to trash talk the Jags sideline. Unbelievable… Camera pans up to a section in the stands just before 3rd down and long for Miami. One guy is frantically trying to pump up the crowd while most people are staring intently at their iPhones in silence…Paul Poz with a great blitz up the middle on third down to force Tannehill to throw it away. Miami punts with 6:45 left. Dolphins coming unglued and committing tons of penalties after a disciplined first half on that front…13 penalties for 112 yards for the game. Everyone is talking about the big penalty on Olivier Vernon that set the Jags up for their game-winning FG, but there was a blatant face mask the drive before that wasn’t called that would have accomplished the same thing. Sheppard does make a big tackle to stop the Jags on 3rd and 1 with 3 min to go…Jags punt. Odrick beats the backup LT and strip-sacks Tannehill (looked a lot like the Hughes play from last week), ball rolls into the end zone before the LT actually rolls the ball out to the 1 yard line and falls on it. Odrick then deflects the pass on 2nd down, he’s having a big game and carrying the Jags defense. Miami punts. Bortles gets two big completions, Dolphins are almost playing a prevent defense for some reason with the score tied and 90 seconds to go. Just realized that Cameron Wake’s name hasn’t been mentioned all day. What I mentioned above aside, Vernon’s PF penalty is beyond idiotic. To shove the Jags player as hard as he did in plain view of everyone in that time of the game…crazy. Myers nails a 28 yard FG for the Jags with 48 seconds remaining to go up by 3 points. Jags break up a couple passes and Miami turns it over on downs. Game over. Conclusion Bad loss for Miami in what was basically a home game for them…defense looked uninspired and really let their offense down. No sacks and poor pass defense. Jags offense did what they wanted, WRs were always open and I couldn’t believe the way Yeldon ran between the tackles. Tannehill and their WRs/TEs had a nice, efficient game. No run game though and this is against a Jags D whose best player might be Jared Odrick (their former back-up). The Dolphins' playcalling was fairly simple, one statue of liberty play that worked for them, but nothing else on the creative side. Lots of their key players picked up knocks in this game and might be game time decisions for Week 3. You never know how they will react to playing in their home opener, but this Miami team looks like an major underachiever to me so far. Could be a close game, but I really believe the Bills are the more talented and balanced team. Thanks for reading, looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Can't wait for Sunday, let's go Bills!
