1. It's crazy to say but knowing our penchant for playing veterans over rookies I don't think Maybin would have started week 1 even if he made all of training camp. I could be wrong but even at draft time they were talking about just bringing in Maybin on obvious pass down situations.

I know I'm not the coach but I say make this guy the starter Week 1 on every down. Let this kid loose! Tell him his only job is to go after the QB EVERY play! If he meets the RB on the way so be it. LOL.

I've said it before, just cover him up with a line backer and/or a safety and let him do his thing.

What is the obvioius "pass down" situations against a team like New England? They will throw on 1st, 2nd, and/or 3rd down. So I guess you have to play him the whole game. I think if Maybin is in there and you get some push up front in the middle we will be okay. But will he be and how often?

  2. I could see Al Davis going for Roscoe Parrish and a 2nd round pick for Seymour, considering how much he likes the speedy/explosive player archetype. I'm just not convinced that would be prudent for the Bills - the fact that the Pats traded him seems to indicate to me that he is not performing at a level required to run an effective 3-4. If we had a larger presence at DE opposite from Seymour, maybe we take a chance and convert to a 3-4 to utilize Maybin at OLB, but I don't see that as feasible at all as is.

I believe the Pats are going to a 4-3 and this was part of the reason for trading Seymour. They may have a mix of both, but they would be remiss in not using the 3-4 against us at least at some level given our inability to do anything against a 3-4.

  3. I have to believe that he doesn't want to miss a game paycheck. I knew he had a unique situation but I never thought is was so unique so as to potentially lead to a regular season hold out which is a doomsday scenario for all involved, the team, Peters, the front office and the fans.

There is still time for it to get resolved before that and as a fan, you just have to hope it does.

There have been several agents of other players who say that the Bill's organization is doing the right thing and I have to agree. You set a prescedent for other players not only on your team but for players on other teams as well. Even the agents who would side with Parker, being in the same fraternity, are saying this.

The Bill's organization isn't saying they won't negotiate with Peters for a new contract. In fact they will. They just want him with the team before this happens. Besides they have other pressing issues such as Lee Evans and Angelo Crowell.

  4. Troy Smith right now is going on most mocks at #16, so if you meant mid-first round....

    837198

Many people have Troy Smith going in the mid first round, but I would have to disagree. I really think that the Raiders will end up taking him because he is an Al Davis/Art Shell kind of player. The Raiders may end up taking Brady Quinn, but Troy Smith would be my bet here.

Personally I would like the Bills to take someone like Joe Thomas from Wisconsin- that is if we don't slide down in the first round. Here's hoping that we don't.

  5. First of all, Gandy will man the LG position. Not the RG position. CV will remain at RG.

Secondly, McGinest doesn't even play for New England anymore.

    815607

First off I wasn't saying that Gandy would replace Villarial at LG. I was simply saying this would be a good move. I think I mentioned the position by committee later in my previous post. I realize that this is an entire shuffle for the most part.

As far as my second point was concerned "My Bad"... McGinnest is in Cleveland; I meant Richard Seymour, but the point was the pros and cons of starting a young Aaron Merz and getting beaten by a stud are going to happen.

Anyway I still love the moves.

  6. I like the moves made to the offensive line. We already know what we have in

Peters playing RT so why not try and see if he can handle the left side? The biggest difference will be the footwork playing on the left side.

Gandy moving back to his more natural position, guard, will allow the staff to see if he still has what it takes to be a player on our line. I would say with this we need to give him the entire 9 games remaining to see if Peters and Gandy can form the necessary cohesiveness to do well together.

I feel fairly comfortable with Fowler playing center. He certainly is no Kent Hull, BUT as far as changes go, this is by no means the most pressing need on the line.

Putting Pennington out at RT seems to be a sound option given what we have at the present time. The coaching staff will have the remainder of the season to see what they have in him and evaluate need in this next draft. Again, the cohesiveness is what takes time to develop and giving him his "audition" to earn a spot when the real bullets are flying is something that I can live with.

This leaves the LG position currently manned by Villarial. It appears that he is susceptible to injury at this point in his career and so the turnstile of Preston and Merz seems to be in order here. Even though this may sound more like LG by committee, it is what we are at this point.

In essence what is happening is that we are replacing Reyes with Pennington, even though the positions are different, but we are moving Gandy to his so called natural position. Two very noticeable observations about Merz in Sunday's game vs. Patriots::: 1. He made a very nice seal-block around the right side that helped spring McGahee on his long shuffle pass run. 2. He whiffed on a block where McGinnest got to JP and recorded a sack at a very inopportune time. This is what you will get with a rookie- it's part of the growing pains that teams must go through when they are trying to develop an offensive line.

If these moves don't work we may have to consider trying to draft Joe Thomas from Wisconsin at LT and move Jason Peters back to the right side. Here again it will still take time to develop the continuity. I still believe that if D'Brickashaw had been there at #8 we would have taken him, but I'm not displeased with Donte. The offensive line will be the focus in this next offseason if we have been listening to what Marv has been saying.

  7. #83=Greatness.

We just need the high character guys making blocks down the field like you see in so many of those highlights. Andre was just awesome. When you see him on Cold Pizza he still looks like he could play.

Maybe with Marv coming back and the Bills looking at high character players we might be fortunate enough to see some of that this season.

  8. Would Detriot have taken Whittner at 9 though? or was it to much of a reach.

    675016

I'm not willing to take that chance as DT is a position of greater depth in this year's draft. This was a wise choice given that Huff was taken at #7. We really don't have a starter at SS and now we will. Whittner would not have been there even if we had only traded down a few spots. It does make me wonder had the Raiders not taken Huff, would we have?

Next we need to go either defensive tackle or one of the 3 OG. We need to wait to grade day 1 of the draft at its conclusion.

  9. The Bills filled a position of desparate need. Ngata and Bunkley both had question marks--Triplett helps fill the D-line hole.

Whitner does not have question marks--he's a fast strong hard-hitting safety who will maul on special teams. The Ravens would have nabbed him at 12, so taking him at 8 might not have been so bad. If the Bills had an offer from Detriot, AZ, or St. Luois, then they could have risked the trade, but it sounds like they got one of the only impact players (for them) available at that pick.

    674855

Also does the name Antoine Winfield sound familiar? I was shocked that he was chosen at this spot but certainly a position of need. He may turn out to be a great pick, only time will tell. I have seen others say that he was as much a player on the Ohio St. defense as AJ Hawk. He most certainly fills a position of need and in the cover2 will do well.

  10. Up until this mornings trade I had been working on a mock draft since last week.  This was my latest revision of it.  Players were graded by Scouts Inc's lastest grades on ESPN, which were updated on Tuesday.  Let's hear some opinions...hopefully nothing but constructive criticism, though I should really know better here

I like Huff in Round 1, but I would opt for Max Jean-Gilles in round 2 if he is still on the board. I feel that our interior of our offensive line is where our weakness is. Gandy is serviceable and I think Peters is really going to turn out fine. Also like others have mentioned, Bunkley was not seen in round 1, probably an oversight.

  11. I know that it accomplishes nothing and includes rooting against the bills, but what if they lost that game to the Bengals at the end of last season and were picking 4th this year?  Would you still want them to trade the pick or take one of the top prospects?

Personally, I would still want to trade the pick.  I just don't see any one person changing our team and the potential of a rookie being a bust is higher than them earning the probowl money you would pay them.  Plus, think of the great picks we would pry get offered to us in trade.

Once again, nothing we can do about it now, but something fun to think about than the reality that we are all beating ourselves up over.

    662907

Actually we would have had the third pick of the draft due to the tiebreakers.

  12. One of the real unknowns here is Gibson. When players are given a second chance they sometimes make the most of it. I find it very interesting that he had his best season under Jauron in Chicago. This is truly a wildcard signing.

Having said this I still believe that we need one or two decent picks on the offensive line early on in the draft. Like most people will tell you it all starts up front (OL and DL).

  13. Actually opening in New England may not be the worst thing. This allows us to at least put extra preparation into this game. I'm not saying that New England won't do the same, but they may overlook us slightly. The thing I do like about our schedule is the 2nd half of the season, especially Miami in December.

  14. Ya know...everyone is knocking houston.  Lets look at that offense.

    QB: Carr

    RB: Bush, Davis

    WR: Moulds, A. Johnson, Gaffney

Thats a good offense.  Now, they need an OL...but yikes.

If these guys pick up 2-3 decent OL, and a few defensive players...seriously...they arent that bad.

    653619

They will pick up an OL in the draft with their picks other than Bush of course at #1. My concern for the Bills is who will emerge as the #2 receiver for the Bills? Will it be Andre Davis? Josh Reed? (wasn't easy for him the first time) All I can say is that we better "Circle the wagons" and really be prepared for this draft to try and fill as many needs as we can.

  15. ...I sure would try and create interest in the #1 pick. The Titans would be a perfect trade partner for them but as of now, why should Tennessee trade with them? Everyone is assuming that Houston is taking Bush and the Saints select either Super Mario or Ferguson or trade down. This would allow Leinart to fall right into the lap of Norman Chow and the Titans. Houston should fuel the fire a little then maybe they could be the recipient of the same type of scenario but only with it being Bush. Who says that they really want Bush? They do have a very adequate RB in Dominick Davis. Even if the Texans did trade with the Titans and weren't able to get Bush they still have alot of other needs. The #3 pick would still net them a very big bluechipper, have to pay less money for a #3 pick vs a #1, and have more picks from the trade down to use for other areas of need. With New Orleans being the only team that wouldn't have to compensate more to trade up, the cost for the other 29 teams just gets more and more expensive the further that they are away from the #1 pick. Example; If the Raiders were to want Leinart, how much more would they have to compensate the Texans than Tennessee? It would be considerably more and thus might be too costly. The best thing that Houston could do is to get the Jets on the phone and gauge their interest, and if they are, then let it "leak" out. The Raiders, Vikings, and Denver also could have interest and the capability to make a decent trade partner. With Denver and Minnesota, Houston would have to cut them a deal. Both teams have 2 first round picks. This would be the bulk or strength of the trade. If Tennessee were to start believing that Houston would seriously consider the multiple 1st rders plus other compensation, like veteran player(s) and/or other draft picks in this year's draft and next year's, then this should get Tennessee motivated. Unless Houston really wants Bush, I think I really like Tennessee's positioning in this draft. It might be in the Texans best interest to not to make it so comfortable for the Titans.

    650299

And to think we could have been in Tennessee's position at #3 had we lost the Bengal game last year

  16. Why would the Bills trade Losman and take the cap hit? He has only played in eight games for his career, if you count the Kansas City game. If memory serves me correctly he did an admirable job stepping in to a difficult situation where Holcomb was getting killed out there. Didn't he throw the 2 touchdown passes that were perfectly placed?

He seems to have all of the tools to succeed at this level. When listening to other quarterbacks talk, the game does start to slow down after about a season and a half. He has only had 8 games to date. You have to give him some time, in more ways than one

Bringing in Nall from Green Bay just gives more competition to the position. If he turns out to be the man to run our team than so be it. Even JP said that it was uncomfortable being "HANDED" the job last season. We would have been better served to have kept Bledsoe last season and had the competition between the two of them. Remember he would have had to earn the respect of his teammates a year ago had they kept Bledsoe. Last year management did no favors for JP. In fact they probably set him back by handling the situation the way they did.

To me, JP is a standup type of guy who wants to go to battle. You have to respect that. Marv has named several quarterbacks who struggled early on in their careers, just as he named coaches who did the same. People out there should look at what Marv is saying: he is all for competition.

  17. There are four thoughts to this whole idea of moving up, trading down, or staying put:

    1. Trading up with New Orleans would be great if we wouldn't have to give up our entire draft (remember a few years back for Ricky Williams)

    2. Trading down would be great as long as we could still get what we truly want and no one really knows who this may be {Marv is not going to show his hand}

    3. This discussion would all be a moot point had we just lost the game near the end of the year to the Bengals (remember Terrence and his pick?) as we would be sitting at number 3 and have a choice of either D'Brick or Mario, whoever was not taken at number 2.

I remember a few weeks back the post that was started about us beating the Bengals :doh:

    4. Staying put is not all bad. We need to trust the braintrust to do their job and know that we will get a quality pick at #8 and still get some quality guys in the later rounds (remember NE getting Tom Brady in the 6th?)

  18. I would be disappointed if all we got for Moulds was a #4.  He should be worth no less than a #2, if not a #1.  I know the story being floated is we are asking for a #4.  I hope the strategy was to get a bidding war started.  I also hope the Pats are not a team we are talking to.

    PTR

    643781

I agree wholeheartedly with you on this. If we were to trade to the Texans we could swap #1 picks and give them our third pick (one or both, depending) as well as Moulds. This is something that we should at least look at.

  19.

Not if we beat them to the punch and trade Moulds to Denver for the #15 pick. Denver gets a polished receiver to help them and we get another bargaining chip to move up in the draft. We then trade our #8 and #15 to New Orleans to move up to #2 in order to take either Ferguson or Williams. Think about it: #8 and #15 would certainly be better than #4 and #29??

  20. Yes, it is still beyond possibility. The value of the #15 and #29 cominbed is 1690 points, which is still less than the 1800 that the #8 is rated as. So, in essence, it would be like paying the Broncos to take Moulds.

    Here is a link.

    640321

I still think that we could trade Moulds for the #15 pick; just in experience alone that would be beneficial for the Broncos. If something like this could happen then we could turn around and trade the #8 and #15 to New Orleans for the #2 overall selection, in which case we take Ferguson. A seasoned veteran like Moulds could give Denver what they are looking for to make a run at a Superbowl this year in the win for me now league that is.

  21. I think Atlanta had the #15 pick and traded it to denver for there #29 (and 2 other picks) who sent it to the NYJ who for Abraham

    638230

Then try to make the deal with Denver if that is the case because you need to get value for a player of Eric's ability. Despite him being 32 or 33 he is in great physical shape and is still a top tier receiver, even at this point in his career. Denver must definitely be thinking that he is a player that may put them over the top (in their minds) so in the age of "WIN NOW" this would be something that might make sense to them. At any rate we must ourselves be able to address our offensive and defensive lines with high quality players and to have two picks in the top 15 would lend itself to other options as well.
