I respect you and your information. Metz. But I was a bit confused why so many continue to put so much belief in the "Roman wants Cassel, Rex wants TT" talk. I think that was true, generally, at some point in the past. But what I'm hearing is, a few weeks ago, both were far from set on who they preferred---and this was before the start of preseason. A lot has happened in the past few weeks and evaluations change. For what it's worth, I heard the Bills were more or less settled on their season #1 just before the Steeler game---and it wasn't Cassel. My source is pretty good, but not infallible so I have been careful about saying too much on this topic. Plus, until the decision is actually made, there is always a chance for re-evaluation.

Like you this Wawrow tweet has me a bit confused. Wawrow is a rock-solid reporter and isn't in the business of passing along BS. So he's getting that info from somewhere. Of course, he could be getting bad info, or just intentional smoke.

Last night or this morning (can't remember which) I was watching the NFL Network they had two guys (ex players I think) talking about the Bills QB situation. The question was asked: "Did EJ do anything to help himself tonight", or something to that effect. Both said, unequivocally, "No". Now I'm thinking, "Really". If he didn't help himself AT ALL, then there was basically nothing he could have done to help himself, and you have to wonder why they would even start him, and bring him back into the game. Now, had their answer been, "Yes, but not enough to pass TT (or Cassel) because they also played well" then at least I'd have understood the answer. But if EJ didn't help himself with that performance, then starting him was an exercise in futility, I think, for the Bills coaching staff.

As for cutting Cassel, I have been strongly against the idea, and I'm still against it, though perhaps not as strongly as I was. As for cutting, or trading EJ (assuming TT gets the start), I am very strongly against that--unless they get remarkable value in a trade, which is very unlikely. The only reason I think you keep Cassel is to serve as a gameday #2, in case of injury. He probably can be (or should be) ready to play with less preparation during the week than either TT or EJ. And it probably isn't the worst thing to not have someone in the QB room with a lot of starting experience. Is that worth $4 million? I don't know the Bills financial numbers, but I'm guessing they can afford it and get the extension deals done. Or put another way, I don't think that $ will be the difference between getting the extension deals done.

    Fully agree with this post.

  2. JFC, if you need the Hubble telescope to determine if MAYBE a microfiber of a fingernail tip COULD have POSSIBLY touched the football, than it really doesn't count as a "tipped pass". Tone it down a notch, EJ fanboys. He had a great game with one shltty 4th down pass. Deal with it.

Nah. You could hear it was tipped on the broadcast clear as day. Sorry that it doesn't fit your sh***y opinion.

Heard? You HEARD the "tip" clear as day??

OK, time for a Twitter poll. Who do you want as the #Bills starting QB?

Tyler Dunne ‏@TyDunne 5m5 minutes ago

Your votes are in: Tyrod Taylor 70, EJ Manuel 13, Matt Cassel 0. (With five saying anybody but Cassel, two for Aaron Rodgers, one Jim Kelly)

Sounds about right. Obviously, the fans overwhelmingly want Taylor. We have eyes, we can see, and we like what we see in TT.

  5. Good observations by the OC. I'd like to add these"

    1. Let's hope Carpenter's kicking issues are resolved soon. Having an automatic PK is huge for a team looking to win with defense, special teams and a ground/pound running game.
    2. After the draft, I pegged O'Leary to be a huge sleeper but he never woke up. Gragg has clearly outplayed him. Practice squad time for Nick.
    3. What impresses me most about Tyrod is his patience and accuracy in the pocket. His running ability was as a given. He's gonna be a star.
    4. Love how EJ has played, but that bounce pass on 4th down without pressure is a reminder of why he can't be trusted as our starter.
    5. Cassel has done nothing to shake his "Meh" status. I see no reason to start Captain Checkdown II.
    6. Darby had one of those days, but that'll happen to a rookie. Don't let it fool you...he'll be a star in this league.
    7. Bryce can start packing his bags as soon as Karlos returns.
    8. Has there ever been a more fragile NFL player than Marquis Goodwin?
    9. Roman could be one-and-done as OC. If this game is any indication how good our offense will be this year he'll be a HC somewhere else next year.
    10. That 33 yard PAT gonna come into play this season; especially in December.
  6. Trying to figure out what to make of this. Is EJ seriously still in the hunt to be the opening day starter? Is it really still a 3 QB race? Is it just a nice gesture to EJ for his hard work and solid drive against Cleveland? Maybe a smokescreen to throw off the Colts preparation? None of the above? All of the above?

    I'm admittedly perplexed.

  7. I think it's Tryod's job to lose at this point. Cassel remains a safety net if Tyrod regresses. I can't see a scenario outside of injuries that EJ is in the mix to start.

If I were Rex I'd play Tyrod and Meh for 3 quarters and give EJ some mopup time at the end. Then let EJ play the majority of the last preseason game and solidify a roster spot. Before the Browns game I didn't think EJ would make the cut, but after that nice game winning drive I believe he's earned the #3 spot.

Simms will probably get a few snaps in the final preseason game and then it's off to the practice squad.

  8. I bet y’all are thrilled to have another thread about QB’s. Well, I haven’t posted since last year so I’m starting one whether you like it or not.

Why should EJ Manuel be the starter in Week 1? It’s not because he’s the best QB on the roster, because right now he’s no better (or even as consistent) than the other two guys he’s competing with. It’s not because he gives the Bills the best chance to win in Week 1, because right now he probably doesn’t give them any better chance than either of the other guys. The reason he should start the first game of the season is because he gives the Bills the best chance to win a Super Bowl at some point in the next 5 years.

I’ve been thinking about the dynamic we’ve been observing throughout this offseason and the one thing that keeps coming to the forefront, both with the fanbase and with the franchise, is that all anybody wants to talk about is making the playoffs this year. We’ve been irrelevant for so long that we’ve reached the point where just making the playoffs one time has become the Buffalo Bills ultimate goal. I think we’re so desperate to be relevant again that we’ve developed an acute case of short-sighted tunnel vision which is making us incapable of seeing the big picture or looking any further down the road than our own hood ornament. Why is this a problem? Because our narrow-minded need for the short-term quick fix of a single playoff appearance may well cost us the opportunity to win a loftier prize in the near future.

For 2 decades the Bills have been desperately wishing for a “franchise” QB to lead this team. For the first time in ages we actually have a high character, blue chip athlete with a big arm and a world-class work ethic sitting right in our laps. He’s played less than a season’s worth of NFL football under an asshat of a coach and behind an atrocious OLine; yet despite that embarrassing lack of support we’ve all watched this kid steadily improve since the day he was drafted. And now suddenly we want to stick him at the end of the bench and stop his development dead in its tracks to take a flier on some other guy who might or might not be marginally better at the moment, just because we are so desperate to make the playoffs one time?! Frag that noise. I don’t want to make the playoffs one time, I want to make multiple championship runs over the next 5-7 years; and the Bills are well-positioned to do just that if they can smartly develop a “franchise” QB to go with the ton of talent they have accumulated all over the roster. Matt Cassell is not ever going to be that guy, Tyrod Taylor is not ever going to be that guy. But unlike those two, EJ Manuel has the god-given toolbox and the natural skillset to become exactly that guy. Do we really want to kick the potential franchise QB we’ve been waiting 20 years for to the curb for what may or may not be an incremental short-term improvement because we’ve become so pathetically desperate that our big goal has now been reduced to making the playoffs one time?

I say the hell with being the scared, desperate little ninnies who are so afraid of mistakes that we’re not willing to dare greatly. The hell with playing it safe when there’s a chance for glory sitting right there in front of us if we’re bold enough to risk it. The hell with just making the playoffs this year when being resolute and steadfast might lead to the grand prize down the road. Put Manuel out there in Week 1 and let him make the mistakes that he needs to make before he can learn to eliminate them. Give him the realistic chance to continue the progress he’s clearly been making and to possibly reach the level that can get us over the top. If he stops improving, then we can turn to our Brad Johnson or our Doug Flutie and play for just one year. But don’t start with one of those guys at the expense of developing the kid that might be exactly who and what we’ve been desperately seeking for 20 years.

  9. EJ is great! EJ must start!

EJ sucks! EJ must go!

YES EJ! NO EJ! YES EJ! NO EJ! YES EJ! NO EJ! YES EJ!

That about sums up half the threads on this board, with the same handful of bored people filling up each thread with redundancy. I understand that it's a hot topic, but how many times can you retrace the same steps before growing sick and tired of going nowhere? It's like the Miller Lite "TASTES GREAT!" vs "LESS FILLING!" argument going on without interruption for 2 months. Maybe give it a rest?

  10. While I like that we have enough positives in 3 QBs to warrant significant playing time for all of them in the 3rd preseason game, it's also problematic. This is the game when the starters give their longest preseason action to prepare for the regular season, and not having a clear starter or even backup could negatively impact timing and symmetry.

After this, even if the game itself has no definitive winner in the competition, I want a starter to be taking 80% of the 1st team reps. I know he wants to milk this out until September 13th, but make a decision already, Rex.

  11. I don't believe in EJ as a viable option to start. He has the ability to make a nice throw, he has the ability to finish a nice drive, but I don't have faith he can do it consistently enough to be a winner in this league. A good drive followed by 3 terrible quarters...how often have we seen that?

That being said, as a Bills fan I certainly don't root for him to fail. I was happy to see him lead the winning drive at the end of the game last week. Maybe he could become a strong backup. If something happens to our starter we aren't dead in the water. That's important in this league, too.

We have an intriguing competition right now.

I see Taylor as the perfect QB for our offense, provided he can consistently execute at a high level. From the little I've seen he seems to have the right demeanor for it. A calmness under fire that can't be taught..

Meh Cassel is the least interesting, but he does have both short and long term value. Short term he could manage the offense efficiently enough to win games. Long term he could be almost a player coach as a backup/mentor who could keep us afloat if our starter goes down.

EJ is in kind of a no-mans land. Still a young guy learning, and has enough physical tools to be viable if his development goes well. That said, he also had significant streaks of poor play that make it hard for any head coach to trust him with the keys to the car.

Thus, I still stand by my assessment at the position.

    1. Taylor - The possible phenom

    2. Cassel - The safety net

    3. Manuel - The project

  12. Tyrod looked fantastic to me. Very much like Russell Wilson. He showed poise, accuracy, speed and seems ready to become the starter. The 3 points are misleading. He only was given 3 possessions, and played against their 1st team with our 5th team skill players.

First drive ended on a missed FG after a 16 play 10 minute drive with several clutch 3rd down conversions. The next was blown up by a 10 yard loss on a Goodwin reverse after Taylor had 22 yard run. The last produced a FG after a nice touch TD pass was dropped on 3rd down.

Far as I'm concerned, the opening day starter should be Tyrod with Cassel holding the clipboard. EJ is the clear 3rd, but might have done enough on that last drive to earn a roster spot.

  13. I think it's an more devious a scheme. As many of us know, Rex and Whaley has been deeply involved with a top secret cabal of quarterback Illuminati since early April. Inside sources are telling me off the record that they plan to call intentionally bad pass plays in the first two games that cause fans and media to scream for Tyrod Taylor to replace Cassel. At that point, they have a secret, never before practiced or revealed playbook that will be installed to make Taylor into an overnight sensation.

Keep this on the down low people.
