  1. Those guys threw the ball soft and over people's heads using good routes rather than through D-linemen's arms. There was an arc on most of their passes I've watched on the NFL network and it really stands out to me the speed of the ball. I'm watching the NFL network and I'm wondering why most QBs see the game as a laser-beam contest of hard passes. Even Jimbo thew arc on many passes, even with Thurman coming out of the backfield over the LB's head just like Quinn did with his RB against us where the QB rushes the RB thinking it's a screen and tosses it over their head as the RB accelerates forward.

Why can't our QBs learn to do this? Why can't the QBs of today pass more like Marino than Jimbo or Young/Montana? Seems to be a lost art, although Brees does it.

We need receivers that can separate from DB's or find holes in zones. Our receivers need a laser beam throw for any chance of a reception (and many of those are caught). How many times do you see our opponents receivers STANDING wide open by five yards or able to run short routes underneath a soft zone. To throw like softer, our guys need to get more space between them and the DB.

  2. the more i think about it, and the more i see the bills implode, i feel like steve fairchild was a good offensive coordinator. i know the offense was bad last year, but we always had a running game. fairchild wasnt the same after he got hired by csu, but now i miss him more than ever.

Did you miss Fairchild after the San Diego game? I doubt it. Fairchild's offense was boring and predictable. Not a game went by when teh offensive game plan was sharply criticized. Always had a running game??? This line could NOT open holes last year. 3rd and 2 was an obvious passining down.

  3. So how long before Turner Gill gets a shot a coaching a major program??? At least he got this one up and running well - I hope he leaves a legacy of strong recruiting and performance...

Perhaps the braintrust at UB could turn teh Bulls into a major program. Why stop at the MAC. Besides, Syracuse could use a viable rival that's in state. Be nice to have UB/Syracuse at the Ralph with neither a clear favorite (of course if 'Cuse keeps dropping, that reality may be true realized already).

  4. Anyone listen to the UB game? What a great comeback. You get the sense that the team just knows how to win.

Fantastic turnaround to a program that was a public embarrassment 4 years ago. Congrats to Turner Gill and his players for giving UB and all of Buffalo a team to be proud of. Go Bulls!

  5. After tonights Sabres game...

I now know that the city of Buffalo is built on top of a Indian burial ground.

    This city is cursed.

Without question the Sabres. Regier and Quinn are so arrogant that they think they can force a deal they want rather than negotiate. Sabres lost 3 all-stars in less than a year, Traded away a quality back-up goalie (Conklin) for a sieve (Thibault), and nearly lost 1-2 high-potential prospects by low-balling them (thank God they didn't mess this up). The Sabres easily could have kept Briere, Campbell by negotiating early. All they had to do with Conklin his sign a new contract.

The Bills have done better in teh player department, but need improvement in the coaching department. Even so, looking at teh Bills in the 2000's, I'm sure the critics of John Butler and Bill Polian would want them back.

  6. If Reed comes back and the Bills start looking like they did the first few weeks of the year, I am not sure what to make of it. I guess it would mean that Reed is much more important than any of us could have realized...he is Edwards security blanket, just like Linus carried his blanket everywhere and if he didn't have it, he would freak out. Edwards seems to be freaking out without his security blanket, but I guess what does that say about Edwards? That he cannot adapt to receivers with different skill sets, or maybe that he doesn't have the chemistry he has with Reed, who seems to be the target of many 3rd down passes, which he usually converts into first downs....

Either way, I have a feeling that Edwards is going to be much better with Reed back, and I am not sure if I think that is a good thing or a bad thing....I have really liked what Reed has brought to the field the past few years, but at the same time, Trent shouldn't be that freaked out without him...IMHO, Trent needs to figure out what other receivers are doing....

Before the bye week, Edwards had no problem checking down receivers, so he has figured out what other receivers are doing. He may be checking down AND FINDING NO ONE. This wasn't uncommon with JP, Bledsoe, RJ and Flutie, either. It's been a long time since having Reed (Andre), Lofton, Beebe, metzelaars.

Second, do you think trent Edwards has fully recovered from his concussion? I don't think so.

  7. Where have we heard something like this before? Oh...last years Sabres...

    PFW reports:

Bills' lack of inspiring leadership holding them back

Coaches often stress the importance of not getting too high or too low in response to whatever situation a team finds itself in. Dick Jauron and the Bills are doing that well … too well, in fact. In talking to sources close to the club, the lack of emotion and fiery leadership both on the coaching staff and on the roster is keeping Buffalo from escaping the doldrums of their three-game losing streak. After being praised for his calm in the pocket in a terrifically efficient start to the season, Trent Edwards' measured stoicism has reflected the offensive stagnation he has directed. Meanwhile, Donte Whitner's absence with a shoulder injury has left the defense without more than just it's most talented defensive back. “Donte's really the only guy this team can rally around,” one source said. “Without him, there's nobody on this team who will make sure you're busting your tail out there.”

    Bills showing lack of leadership

IMHO, with so many young players, they need the coaches to get on them when they make mistakes too many times...obviously Jauron isn't doing a good enough job of it, and it is showing...

Jauron needs to be a sideline leader. He should take a lesson from Turner Gill. You watch Turner Gill on game day and there's no question he's in charge. You look at Jauron and you think he's someone who showed up on the wrong sideline. The NE game showed how lack of sideline leadership leads to uninspired play. When Jauron lazily thru the unacknowledged challenge flag, the players followed his uninspired ways and played a heartless game.

  8. I find it odd that no one tried to tie together TE's great play before the bye, and declining play after the bye. Could he still have lingering effects fron his concussion. This staff has alrerady demonstrated that it will re-insert someone into the line up before they're healed (McGee into the Miami game with a knee not fully recovered, and Ginn ran by him all day).

IMO - Edwards has not fully recovered from the concussion.

  9. About time. I'll bring the pitchforks, who's bringing the torches, and who's bringing the rope?

Since this is a "witch hunt", are we allowed to waterboard?

During the Salem Witch Hysteria, one poor guy, Giles Corey (I may have the name backwards) was pressed to death during a 3 day interrogation by the Salem Sheriff, hoping to get a confession, and thus rights to his land. Pressing meant they laid him flat in a shallow pit and placed heavy stones on him until he either confessed or died. He chose the latter to ensure the the sheriff would not take control of his land and it would pass down to his daughter and son-in-law. While he should have been gone forever, it is believed his ghost still roams the Howard St cemetery in Salem and some say was visibly present just before a major fire burned 1/3rd of Salem circa 1914.

Lesson - NO VIOLENCE PLEASE! Buffalo sports has enough curses, we don't need to add another.

  10. jauron and his staff = safe for ralph and cheap.we are in the longest rebuilding period in the history od the game of football it seems.throw in the fact that maybe ralph doesn't want to go through another shake up of his team

I'm getting tired of the 3 year experiments myself. What I don't know is how to change it. I thought RW learned after Kay Stephenson that poor coaches equals empty seats. Perhaps the extra bucks from Toronto can go to a decent coaching staff. Retreads and wannabees have only led to mediocrity. I don't think of us as rebuilding as much as perpetually mediocre. Good enough to make us fans feel that each year we have a chance to make the playoffs, only to fade late in the season. We aren't as bad as the mid-80's or '68-'71 Bills, but too darn mediocre.

  11. He was open quite a bit last night and Edwards just couldn't find him.

What bothers me is if he was open,

    1) why didn't Jauron or Schonert get him to throw the ball to him. It's almost like the coaches and players don't communicate.

    2) why didn't Evans tell him to look for him

My two theories are either he was not allowed to throw long because of the weather (sounds stupid, but the long ball wasn't working for either QB with any considtency last night) or Edwards is still having effects of his concussion, and the fog hasn't lifted that far yet. His throwing motion does not look like pre-concussion. Even his dump-offs weren't as crisp.

  12. i don't think it will be jauron. ralph is not willing to pay a quality coach.jauron is average at best and safe.thats the way ralph likes it.imo some ast. coach will most likely get chopped. i believe a handful of players get tossed as well. melvin fowler, jp losman, duke preston could be dumped as well.plus they won't resign jabari.

I have a feeling you're right. One of the penalties of being a lower income team in the salary cap world is the staff and front office is where money gets squeezed. You can only hope that you can uncover an up and coming coach before the Jerry Jones's lure him away for the salary equal to the entire Bills staff.

  13. I was wondering what folks would want to see in this team and in the organization to make you think this isn't just an exercise in futility anymore. I'll start:

    1) Get a proven HC. Like Cowher, Mariucci, I don't know who else is available. But someone who is speaks softly but carries a big stick. If Fox is out in NC, I'd take him.

    2) Draft a lineman (Center, Guard or Pass Rusher). With the next pick take a TE or OLB. It would also be acceptable to switch positions in the 1st and 2nd. If Tebow is available when we pick, I'd seriously consider it.

    3) Get a proven, quality veteran QB as backup. This whole waiting for a QB to develop business is for the birds. A young QB can sit and learn as well.

    4) Revamp the scouting and FA department. God, how I miss Dwight Adams and AJ Smith.

    5) Make players accountable. Coaches have to get in the ear hole of players and tell them to lead. Not wait for someone to lead them.

We need a coach who takes command of a game. The downfall of Williams and Mularkey was that they made fools of themselves and the team due to their in-game decisions and game mangement. We have had too many games where we have been outcoached, had poor clock management, or poor strategy.

I watched UB on ESPN2 a couple weeks ago and it was amazing to see the difference between Turner Gill and Dick Jauron. Gill looks and acts like someone in charge, and someone the players believe in. Jauron looks like he walked out on the wrong side of the field and seems too himself all game. I don't get the feeling he's comprending what's going on.

My vote - a new HC who takes command of the game.

  14. Like every year since the '99, the annual Bills witch hunt is in full force. Who will join the likes of Flutie, Johnson, Bledsoe, Losman, Philips, Donahoe, Mularkey, Williams in the January hit list. From posts and media it looks like Edwards is leading Jauron in that catagory. What doesn't make sense is all the Edwards accusers seem to have forgotten that he was the second coming of Jim Kelly the first 4 games, and showed poise and promise all last year. What only a few have asked is why is he suddenly looking like he lined up behind center for the first time. Makes no sense at all. There in lies my part of the witch hunt and it is directed straight at Night of the Living Dead Star Dick Jauron. Even before I read some earlier posts, my first thought was that the fog hadn't cleared from his concussion. Most normal coaches and docs would keep him out until the cranial fog had lifted. But, Jauron and Co have already demonstrated that they will play an injured player even if its to the detriment of the team and the player. Against the Fin, Jauron played McGee against their speedy receiver with a not yet healed sprained knee, saw him get toasted, then in an act of utter stupidity, left him in to be toasted again and again. Completely idiotic! My theory is he's done it again. Even after the 3 int's, when Edwards ran near the goal line and didn't call a TO right away, ESPN thought he was inexperienced. He isn't. Looking at his face, he was dazed and his head was scrambled. Jauron should have pulled him not as punishment but to prevent permanant injury in my opinion.

The Edwards situation aside, Jauron and Co have been consistently outcoached in both game prep and in-game decisions. The choice to sit on a 50 yard FG with a minute left and a TO makes no sense at all. I've had people at work (I'm not in WNY) come up to me all day and ask why the Bills did that (somehow, once people find out I'm from Buffalo they think I have instant access to the sideline headsets). Non-football people thought it was stupid. On top of that, a coach needs to motivate his players and get the most out of them (self motivation only goes so far when pain's a factor). Last week in NE, this team played with no heart and it was a direct reflection of Jauron's leadership. This guy seemed to hardly care when things went wrong (remember Bobby April screaming at the ref, while DJ looked stonefaced). If the coach doesn't care, neither will the players. The players are fine, but underperforming too often, or have one big play and then tank for the next 5.

For this years witch hunt, I say leave the players alone and point your brooms at the coach. Their play is a reflection of him.

  15. In talking with a clinical pshycologist who watched last night's debacle, he observed in Trent:

    -lack of decision making ability

-inability to coordinate physical reactions with mental commands ( horrendous decisions on throws when he could decide)

    - complete lack of confidence

-inability to process information quickly, if at all.

All of this in retrospect of his performance before the hit, and just the fact of the hit and the portions of the brain that were bruised .

He thinks that TE is playing through obvious post concussive trauma syndrome. He's not only jeopardizing this team's performance and his image, but he's one good hit away from a permanaent trip to la-la land, and I don't mean when the Bills get sold and sent to LA.

TE needs to be benched for the season. He has had a serious injury that despite the San Diego game, these things don't happen in a linear fashion, he has NOT recovered from and his mental condition is getting progressively worse.

That much is painfully obvious over the last 4 weeks.

He is putting his permanent mental health at risk.

Bench him now for God's sake!

This is absolutely right! Few people (and certainly not the media fools at the Buff News). He has not been the same after the 'Zona game. The rookie mistakes he was being blamed for are are things he worked thru or passed before the hit. On top of that, the coaches have already showed that they will put in an injured player when they shouldn't. McGee should not have started on his recovering knee against the Fins, yet he did start, and the foolish coaches kept him in even after they could see he'd be torched. Jauron hung him out to dry and and he's doing the same to Edwards.
