  1. I don't know just how good Locker will be, but John Clayton who knows him well living in Seattle, thinks he should stay in school another year. By the way, the SEC is BY FAR the BEST Conference in the Country there is NO debate about that.

In general the SEC is the best conference, but this year the Pac 10 is the best overall conference. The SEC has 2 very good teams and not much after that.

As for your point about Locker: I agree that he should stay in school for another year, but with the o-line he plays behind and the potential for a new rookie salary scale, it is probably best for him to come out. I think it is 50-50 at this point....

I am hoping he does come out because this year would be the only chance for the Bills to get him, unless they somehow manage to be even worse next year. I just think he is an excellent prospect and is a great fit for the Bills in every way. I will leave you with this from the chat this afternoon with everybody's favorite ESPN "expert":

Mort- Do the Rams draft QB in 1st round or take the dominant Suh at DT. What would you recommend the Rams do to rebuild this franchise??

    Chris Mortensen (11:02 AM)

If the Rams have the first pick, I believe Suh will be the likely choice, unless there's a strong conviction about Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen or Jake Locker. I am told that NFL personnel folks who attended Locker's UW game vs. Cal on Saturday were blown away by his performance. Someone told me, "Taller Steve Young."

  2. Super. Then, by all means, based on the film from that Cal game and your opinion and vast experience as a pro scout, let's definitely forget about a our needs at LT, RT, DT, linebacker, etc., and burn a high first-round draft pick on the guy with a 74 QB rating who's played 28 college games and lost 19 of 'em - a guy with the least experience and worst stats of all the QBs that are projected to go in the first round - then, after a lengthy, protracted negotiation and likely holdout thru at least part of camp, give him a multi-year $10-15M/year contract with at least $25M guaranteed in the hopes (and extreme unlikelihood) that Lone Wolf knows how to spot a future star QB.

So where exactly did I say to neglect those other needs?

The most important position on the team is the QB. The Bills badly need a QB and will be picking in the top-10. This is a good time to finally solve this problem the right way, especially in a year when the OT crop looks pretty weak.

And you can throw all the stats out there that you want, but Locker has had to do it alone against good competition. Do you really think Bradford or Clausen would have been better than he was in his situation?

  3. Are there actually any passing highlights of Jake Locker? Every hi-lite I see, he seems to be running!

Guys played what, 28 games on a losing team? Cumulative record 9W/19L. Thrown 36 TDs/26 INTs in those 28 games while getting sacked 55 times. Culmulative QB rating of 74.5/53% completion ratio. 5300 yards in 3 seasons. 192 yards/game.

This guy's got the least impressive stats of any QB mentioned as a first-round possibility. Any idiot who thinks this guy's worth the risk of a wasted first-round pick probably also thinks FatBoy Jason Peters is going to the Pro Bowl and is worth the $60M the Eagles just wasted on the bum! <_<

Awesome post!!! Statistics always tell the whole story....

In my opinion, Locker is the best QB prospect for the Bills by a wide margin. I don't think most of you understand how bad his supporting cast is. He plays on a team that won zero games without him last season. This season they won 5 games in the best overall conference in the country, and they came very close to winning several more.

There is no doubt his game needs more refinement, but the strides he has made in only 1 season playing in a pro-style offense is amazing. He has elite physical tools and is also a tremendous leader. His accuracy issues are overblown. When you have no line to block for you and WR's that drop a ton of passes, you will not have a great completion percentage.

If you have any doubts about the kind of player he is track down a copy of the Cal game from last weekend. Your questions will be answered...

  4. That guy is a force. I'd love him in a Bills uniform. I'm not sure he'd have the speed to play in this horrible system we run, but with any luck it gets trashed when we get a new coach.

Pretty sure he would be fast enough, but his football smarts and instincts would make up for any lack of "speed" he may have. The great thing about McClain is that he should be able to play any LB position in any system.

  5. Locker is the guy the Bills should pick, even if they have to trade up for him. This team needs a QB and Locker would be the best fit in Buffalo out of anybody in the country. He would probably benefit from another year playing in college, but with the NFL labor situation and what happened to Bradford, I can't imagine he goes back to school. I just hope they have a real shot to get him.

  6. Suh is who we got in the DraftTek draft this week. Some more defensive pressure is high on my list, so I was loving that pick.

I'd take Tebow in RD#1, Dan LeFevour in RD#2, or Max Hall in RD#3 if we go LT or OLB in earlier rounds.

Are you being serious with this Tebow stuff? We are all entitled to our opinions and I have been wrong plenty of times, but it blows my mind that you actually think Tebow would be a good pick for the Buffalo Bills in the 1st round. There are so many things wrong with him as an NFL QB prospect that I wouldn't even know where to begin....

The Bills already have a mediocre QB. My feeling is that if they can't get an "elite" guy they shouldn't spend a 2nd or 3rd round pick on some second tier prospect. A few weeks ago I felt it would be best to stick with Trent and build the rest of the team. I have changed my mind on that because I really don't see Edwards as having the mentality or durability to lead this team anywhere. He got off to a good start this year, but as soon as things went wrong he completely lost his confidence like he did in the Cleveland game last year. And now he is hurt again.

So I am hoping the Bills have a shot at a QB in the 1st round. There are only 2 guys in this draft worth taking that high for the Bills and that is Locker or Clausen. I prefer Locker, but would OK with either at this point. The draft is a looooong ways away though.

  7. OL, DL, or LB. Anything else would be foolish.

I am not completely sold on Trent, but I have no reason to believe any QB in this draft would be a better option than keeping him and improving the team around him. He played very well in the first 2 games and was running for his life this Sunday. Any QB would have struggled behind a line that got owned as badly as his did.

Oh, and the idea of drafting Tebow in the 1st round is ABSURD. He is not an elite NFL QB prospect and I would not be surprised at all to see a position switch in his future. I know a lot of people think otherwise and I could be proven wrong, but that is how I feel.

  8. What about the game against NE when they got called for pass interference on a hail mary and Bledsoe hit Ben Coates for the winning TD on the next play to win the game? Not positive, but I think was the same game where the refs gave NE a key 1st down on a play when the Pats player did not catch the ball and was short of the 1st down marker.

  9. I hope that Brohm found that quest to be worth the $20M he gave up to pursue it.

Brohm didn't give up anything by going back. Just because some media types said he would be a top-10 pick does not mean that is where he would have been drafted. For example, these same media types pegged Andre Woodson as a top-5 pick during his senior year at Kentucky and went in the 6th round.

Players need to go through the "draft process" before anybody can really say where they will be taken. Until you can get accurate height, weight, and speed measurements on people, as well as the medical reports to go along with the real film evaluation we can't say where a player will go.

  10. Lori, I know I've been one of Goodell's biggest detractors in the way he's handled things since taking over, but i have a major problem with only 5 games. And this has more to do than just Goodells random and haphazard suspensions that are based more on star power and marketability as opposed to the offense. (3 games for a gun locked in a truck, while you can beat women repeatedly and only get 1, and wilfork not getting any punishment after repeated fines for illegal and cheap hits).

My biggest problem is that the league and Goodell have completely ignored one important aspect: gambling. No one runs a dog fighting ring for sport. They run it as a gambling venture. As far as i know, all of the profesional sports leagues are very strict on their players/coaches/employees staying far away from organized gambling. So how can the league completely ignore the fact that Vick was involved in an illegal gambling operation? Its absolutely baffling. I would wager that if someone from the lions got caught doing the same thing vick did, he would be suspended for life, similar to how low-market sad sap cleveland and donte stallworth got such a huge penalty. (which you can bet would be 1-2 games is donte was still in ne*)

But why is the league completely ignoring the gambling portion of the dogfighting ring? To me, that is an offense worthy of a lifetime ban.

    Excellent Post.

My problem with Vick being allowed back is that he has yet to "prove" anything. He was locked up for 2 years or so, how does anybody know if he has changed his ways? I think he needed this year off to prove that he can be a law abiding citizen. Oh well, as long as he doesn't land in Buffalo I don't really care too much.

  11. I like Pacquiao in this one. Could be a classic.

Glad you appreciated my poetic license. If I still were writing for a newspaper, that word would probably never would have made it into print. I try to have fun when I write. Editors don't always agree, but at ESPN.com they give us a lot of literary freedom.

I agree. Hatton is as tough as they come and seems to be in great shape, but Pac is just the better fighter. I think Ricky is going to catch a beating tonight and be a bloody mess before the end of the night. I am actually heading to the fight in a little while. The atmosphere is going to be insane. Pac in 9!

I know you have been given props already, but that Maybin article was fantastic. I hardly ever post on here, but I was one of the few Bills fans out there who was 100% against drafting Orakpo. The more I learn about Maybin, the more I feel like my stance was justified. Keep up the great work.

  12. you may be right but every site i have gone to has him flagged with bad character issues and you know the bills stance on character plus i dont believe he is the best player that will be available @ #11. we have bigger needs @ center linebacker and de however i am not impressed with the DE's in this draft @ 11.

I don't know if we can really say this anymore as the Bills drafted 2 bad character guys last year in Hardy and Ellis. Also, everybody in the organization knows they must win this year or they could be out of a job. This may cause them to be a little more willing to value talent over character.

  13. I do not think this is correct.

I am pretty sure that when this whole Toronto business came about that it was reported there would be no relocation fee since Toronto was considered part of the Bills home market. Even though the team would be changing cities, they are not really changing "markets", so it would not be considered a relocation. Again, I do not have firm facts on this, just something I kind of remember from several months ago. Anybody else recall this???
