I'm kind of opposite. I still think our personnel is better than what they show on the field.  I think a top-tier DC could make this a top 10 defense w/ the players we have.

The schemes & soft zone have always nagged at me.  They just don't work against top QB's and teams, and we don't seem to make necessary changes.

McDermott will never change his defensive scheme. It hasn't changed in 8 years. No matter how many times his defense fails in the playoffs vs KC. There in lies the problem. That's why he needs to go.

As much as I love Sean and Beane, I strongly believe that if we miss reaching the SB again we HAVE to move on. Things seem stagnant and nothing has changed when compared to last year.

I think Beane has done a disservice to Allen by not providing better targets especially when he could have instead of drafting crappy players (Landon Jackson, Bishop, Greg Rousseau, Basham, and that one CB that was traded to Dallas). Something has got to change. What do you guys think?

I agree with you 100% but i really don't think any changes happen unless Allen himself starts complaining and the chances of that are slim. Unfortunately Allen will have to win it all in spite of the Coach and GM. It would be a tragedy since I will never see another QB of Josh's caliber in my lifetime.

It's not hard to observe the Corporate strategies at these two destinations.

Las Vegas isn't about cheap food, inexpensive drinks and living like a king for a few days of gambling anymore.  With $16 Budweiser's, resort fees higher than room rates and $150 buffets the 'average' tourist is being priced out.  The Corporations that run Las Vegas are making higher profits with less people coming to town.  The wealthy and high rollers are  now their target guests.

It seems to me the Bills are using the same strategy with the new stadium.  Fewer seats, seat licenses and much higher ticket prices are making it difficult for the 'average' fan to attend a game.  The people that filled the 80,000 seats in Rich Stadium and now 70,000 seats are being left out.  They aren't needed anymore!  The Bills will make more profit with fewer fans to deal with.

I think we'll miss the days of raucous, crazy fans cheering on the Bills!

    Never underestimate Bill's Mafia

Overhaul? No. Buffalo still has a lot of very valuable pieces on defense. Tweaked ? Yes. They need to get bigger in certain areas, but players like Bosa, Oliver, Rousseau, Benford, Bernard, Deone Walker, and Taron Johnson could all start on most NFL teams. The Bills also have 2 gigantic rookie DTs. The jury is still out on Hairston and the rest of the rookie defenders.

I think people are judging a very small sample size. It’s a young defense. Give them time to adjust. Even veteran FAs need time to gel with their teammates. I think they we will see a different defense towards the 2nd half of the season.

Rousseau hasn't made a play in 4 games. Johnson is getting up there in age. Oliver makes a difference a few games per year.

Well, after three more games, after I posted an OP asking if Babich was on the hot seat, just before the Jets game, I am definitely moving very quickly now to thinking this dreadful defensive performance we have seen to start the year is now very likely the result of some awful coaching. I want to see where Bills’ fans on here stand now, three weeks later.

While I am not 100% convinced that Babich is the fundamental problem as I was completely convinced with dorsey, after almost 1/4 of the season now is in the books the needle is definitely moving rapidly in that direction. 90% maybe? It has been almost a shocking defensive collapse to begin the year.

Do people think that this defense looks better than last year's and is improving weekly?:

--Do they think it is showing clear progress early in the season, with their weaknesses being fixed, smoothed out? And their strengths becoming more pronounced?

--Are there clear signs that most of the very weak aspects of the defense last year are better now--and getting better as this young season progresses?  For example, their overall 3rd down efficiency, their run defense, their tackling, the pass rush, the play calling?

--Is Babich making solid half time adjustments that improve things overall at the start of the 2nd half?

--And most importantly, do players look prepared, disciplined, confident and ready--and are they playing to their potential as individuals and as units?

To me the, and almost across the board, the answers are no. And too often, a resounding, hell no.

In fact, the defense looks more consistently bad this year than last year, making teams like the dolphins and saints look unstoppable for the majority of those games. The dolphins and saints. At HOME  With tens of thousands of loud rabid fans making their life easier.

A friend said, well it's because Oliver has not been in there, and Milano, and the suspended guys too.  But that seems really off--the Bills in the past, and the other good teams, readily overcome those types of player losses.  Maybe they show some more gaps in their defense, but they almost never collapse.  And the startling consistency of the weaknesses of this year and last year throw cold water on that, to me.

Watching the last two games, against teams that are not world beaters, and both AT HOME,  both opposing offenses seemed to get better and better against this defense as the games progressed, not worse.  It often seemed like the Bills had no answers, with gaping holes in the secondary, gaping holes against the run, big spacial voids all over the field, all game long, horrible tackling, players looking out of position consistently---and that lost, confused look we too often saw on the faces of offensive players as dorsey 'progressed' in his tenure--and especially in his last year: "What is going on out here? We have no asnwers," sums up those looks.

Yes, the Bills are 4-0, but this is not in any way a championship defense--they cannot rely on big splash plays to win games, at the end of games, on defense all year. And not on the road, and not against the top teams. Not consistently. That will not work. All of the team’s hopes for this season, and ours, will be dashed IF this type of defense is allowed to continue.

To me, right now, this really looks like a very very poorly coached defense in almost all respects.  And if I see this, and if I am right, then McDermott knows it, but in a much more specific, detailed manner just how poorly Babich is leading this defense. And ditto for Brandon Beane--does Beane think with the players he provided that the defense should have these kinds of fundamental flaws in so many areas--again?  I would bet the answer is NO. This is why I am convinced that Babich's seat is extremely hot, burning.

Why did they look so different against the Jets, prepared, disciplined, tackling well, in position.... I think after awful weeks for the defense, like we saw against the Ravens, or in important games, like the Denver playoff game, McDermott has basically taken over for his young DC.

The Bills don't need a great defense to be champions this year, and maybe not even a very good one--just a good one.

But, so far, this defense looks fundamentally flawed.  Awful even, and a great deal of the time.

I think Babich's seat is extraordinarily hot now.  A few more games, one?, like we have just seen and McDermott should take over. Our great offense was on a death march under dorsey. Before the season I said he would be gone by Halloween. That season they quiuckly were falling out of the playoff race, and almost there as the season regressed. Don Orlovsky said our offense, with Josh Allen leading it, had become ‘the easiest offense in the NFL to defend’.  But McDermott stepped in, and made the kind of dramatic change most thought he would not make.  Then, in one week, one, the offense looked like world beaters—again--and were that way for the rest of the season.  I think the same thing may very well be needed very soon with Babich. And  it could have the same effects.  They won’t be a great defense, not there yet, with the young players and changes, but I am convinced the defense will show the same kind of improvement that we saw when Brady took over the offense.

Even if you are not on board that Babich is the main problem, isn’t it hard  for you to imagine this defense not playing dramatically better with any high quaity defensive coordinator like Schwartz, Spagnuolo—or a McDermott coaching them? To me the answer here is hell yes.

I think it is a combination of bad coaching along with bad players. This secondary is brutally bad. Rapp looks like he is afraid to hit anyone due to his concussion history. I watched him on a play where Kamara received a pitch out to the right and he was running up to make the play and instead of angling in towards the runner he engaged his blocker. It looked like he could have easily got around the blocker chose to engage the blocker. There is something very wrong with Rapp. Tre has lost a step or 2. Benford has regressed a bit. He is giving up tds like they are Halloween candy. Bishop is decent but not great. They need a full fundamental change in defensive coaching philosophy with the players they have. Whatever they are trying to do it isn't working. I don't think the suspended players make much of a difference, in my opinion. We need to overhaul this defense in the off season.

We’re scoring points, so I can’t complain too much—but doesn’t it feel like we have a lot of predictable 2nd-down runs that go nowhere and start slow? Came back strong vs. the Ravens, but it’d be nice to open things up earlier. Against the Jets it didn’t matter, but I’m still waiting to see more schemed explosive plays in the passing game, especially early. Similar issues as last year. What do you guys think?

Agree with your take. A little bit of imagination with this offense would be great. If You have a unicorn in Allen, you could be more versatile with your play calling and a lot less predictable.

The entire secondary as a whole, and it's 100% due to selecting players who will "work well in the system" rather than getting the best players you can and adjusting the defense to their strengths.

Exactly. The defense is so hard to learn it limits the players they go after. Its ridiculous

Who’s the guy not named Allen that really takes off?

Barger for the Blue Jays is a great example, kids gonna be a star.

When I look at the Bills I’m thinking Jackson, Walker and Strong.  Possibly Hawes.

Walker is going to get the opportunity, same for Hawes. I think they both really light it up at home but we’ll see

Hawes will catch 12 balls if that. Not gonna excel in his rookie season.

Was going to throw Keon out there too.  Yeah, his separation ability has been the big concern.  But, he was coming on about midway through last season before the injury set him back.  Let’s see if he can take some big steps forward this season.

I agree. Coleman will make a leap forward. Im predicting over a 1000 yds recieving and 8-12 tds

First off... If I were to bet, I would bet saying no he doesn't get fired because it was his 1st year

BUT... I think it is at least a discussion worth having, and that he will be on thin ice next season.

Some stats that are pretty alarming:

    29th on 3rd downs

Let up the 4th most first downs in the league.

23rd in passing yards allowed and 8th most passing TDS allowed. (Insane compared to years in the past)

And in the biggest game of the year against KC with two starters out in the secondary, I believe Joe Marino stated they played man around 44 percent of the time...

I am trying not to make this a Sean Mcdermott discussion, as we get it as it is his scheme.

But inarguably, the Bills defence outside of turnovers? Was pretty much a disaster this season and Bobby B didn't have many answers.

What do you think about Babich going forward?

Just fire the whole staff and start fresh. Mcd and company had 8 cracks at it and didn’t get it done. Time for something new

Yes, the Bills had the ball for a potentially game winning drive at the end.  Yes, Josh maybe could have handled it better.  Yes, Mahomes may be the better QB, especially in end of game moments.   I just want to see another Bills player step up in the moment.  Make a play for your QB.  Even if he isn't quite on Mahomes' level, make a play to get the team over the hump.  Does anyone think that, in the same scenario, Kelce would drop that ball?

For all the hand wringing about Josh Allen being "unclutch", there were plenty of times that Mahomes, Brady, Manning failed.  No QB is perfect. I know that Tom Brady had a hell of a lot of help on those teams, that's for damn sure.   We have seen Josh Allen be as clutch as anyone in other games.  His play against the Chiefs in the 13 second game was as good or better than any Montana game or Brady game.   Everything is black and white in these discussions.  In reality, a lot of factors go into winning or losing at the end.  If Mahomes' receivers drop balls at the end of games, would that be an indictment on him? What if Butker misses the field goal in the 13 second game?  Does that mean Mahomes wasn't clutch?  If he doesn't have Chris Jones on his team, would his defense be stopping these teams in the 4th quarter drives?   Was Lamar Jackson "clutch" when he almost single-handedly lost his team the game in the first half? So, his one drive at the end with the Bills basically  in a prevent defense completely redeems him?  Did Josh Allen not will his team to a touchdown with a ridiculous fourth down pass to Samuel in the 4th quarter?

In the end, I don't care if Mahomes is better than Allen.  At some point, somebody has to make a damn, memorable play for the Bills other than Allen.   Make a tough catch, a crazy run, something.  Far lesser quarterbacks than Josh Allen have won Super Bowls.  I'd love him to be perfect all playoffs.  If he isn't, I'd love for someone to bail him out, which never happens.  Allen and Mahomes have basically played on even terms in their matchups, for the most part.  This isn't like a Jared Goff throwing picks all over the field or Thurman Thomas fumbling the ball all over the place.

Unfortunately these situations define quarterbacks. He absolutely deserved the 13 second game. I’ll give him that one. However, the last 2 years have been where he needed to step up and be Superman on the final drive. He has done it many times in the past but when the season and Super Bowl was on the line he didn’t come through. Will that be his legacy ? I hope not but I know Brady or Brees or Mahommes would have scored in those situations. He still has a lot of great years ahead of him but he has to finish in those situations. No excuses.

As I read complaints about Allen's performance, I understand he did not play his best and everyone, of course has their right to opinions. "He choked", "he missed this, he missed that", etc. I understand and empathize with the frustration.
i have been a Bills fan since their inception and he is the most athletically gifted quarterback I have ever seen in the NFL.

I appreciate him as an athlete and as a person. My only point... complain and criticize him if you will, but once in a while take a breath and be thankful for the talent and heart we are witnessing from this generational person. He has brought so much joy and excitement to the organization and community. Critique all you want but appreciate what we have... where would this team be without him?

    Go Bills!

I can appreciate what you are saying. We are blessed to get to watch 17 play and lead our team every Sunday. The fact remains he had a chance this year and last year to beat Mahommes on the final drive by scoring a TD and putting away his nemesis.  He failed both times and didn’t even get the 3 points that would of tied the game. The great quarterbacks in the past get it done in those situations he did not. To me he choked

He’s great. He’s been great in the playoffs. He wasn’t tonight.

Started shaky as hell. Couldn’t run all night. Couldn’t sneak. Couldn’t get it downfield (except Hollins a few times…good on Hollins). Ran right into that blitz he didn’t see to end the game and left Shakir open for what may have been a winner.

Love Josh. But let’s just call it what it was—choke job tonight. If he was great we go to the superbowl. He was far from great.

Same scenario last year. Final minutes down by 3 all he had to do was get a td and he beats Mahommes. He choked then and he choked this year. He is a great QB but definitely not clutch like Mahommes

  14. There is no way in hell I'm trusting this coach to make good coaching decisions in the final minutes of any Super Bowl (if he ever gets us there). The amount of pressure he would be under in a close game with Buffalo's first championship on the line, he botches it 9 times outta 10. Nobody can convince me otherwise. Josh would need to have to win in blowout fashion in order for us to win a Super Bowl under McDopey.
