Maybe you don't watch all the games; he's quite inconsistent and hasn't broken several really bad habits despite being around a while.

He doesn't need a friend as his coach; he needs someone who will improve his game.

You'll recall the Bills aren't playing on Sunday...there's room for improvement everywhere.

Oh cool, I can't wait for the only person to ever have 40+ TDs in four straight years, while leading a top 5 offense, while averaging 12 wins a year, to stop being "quite inconsistent."  As soon as we get that meanie QB coach in here to rough him up a bit he'll surely go for 6000 yards and 60 TDs every year!

Are there some real world examples of this whole hard-nosed yeller vs. friend thing that you all seem so fixated on?  Are you referring to Daboll?  Josh didn't have any more success under Daboll than we did this or last year, going by your metric of "who's playing next Sunday."

We're not playing next Sunday because our D-Line is underwhelming, the middle of our defense was gutted by injuries, and our safeties aren't impact players anymore.  So we gave up 9 yards a play to the best quarterback/play caller in the league and lost.  Of course there's room for improvement everywhere, but this thread is about the (silly and reductive) notion that our QB coach's personality is a serious concern, and that Josh doesn't work or improve because he doesn't have someone in his ear screaming "DON'T THROW AN INTERCEPTION MAN!!!!!!!!!!"

Maybe it's time to just accept and be happy that he's always going to be a 45 TD/17 Turnover guy, and he'll never reach this pinnacle of perfection that everyone wants.  And you know what?  That's plus his current rate of playoff production is plenty to help win a title.

Since McDermott arrived different coaches has made the SB, how is he more successful than 98% of coaches in the NFL, much less sports?  To this point, with Josh Allen as QB he has underachieved.

Well, I figure 5-7 coaches get fired every year, plus 31 other currently employed coaches.  McDermott has more wins, playoff appearances, playoff wins, and divisions titles than any of them except Andy Reid since 2017.  And if not for Reid, he'd probably have a Super Bowl appearance or two.  So, to me that's successful, there's more to success than winning the Super Bowl.  But, agree to disagree I guess.

As someone who found a lot of what was in the Dunne piece to be illuminating and probably truthful...

Two things that have happened since have been kind of damning to that report:

The first was the Wink Martindale/Brian Daboll fallout. Whereas it looked like the rather public breakup of McDermott and Daboll was more on McDermott, seeing Daboll be unable to make it work with a second consecutive defensive mind makes one wonder.

The second was the fact that, as the OP mentioned, two coveted young coordinators chose to stick around in Buffalo rather than go elsewhere, even though both garnered significant interest. Babich, in particular, was surprising, choosing to stick around under a defensive-minded head coach who may still continue to call plays rather than potentially spread his wings under an offensive minded guy.

Lastly, the way the team rallied around McDermott after the piece came out also sort of poked a bit of a hole in the "no one likes playing for this control freak" narrative.

The more that time has gone on and the more that's happened, the less accurate Dunne's piece has looked.

With all of that said, the Bills still lost in heartbreaking fashion in the Divisional round to the Kansas City Chiefs, and the major thesis of Dunne's piece was that McDermott tenses up in big moments and that the Bills need to move on from him to ever reach the Super Bowl, so.....he hasn't entirely been proven wrong thus far.

It's almost as if a bunch of fans were judging and thinking they could read a person off a bunch of intentionally bland press conferences, rather than his body of work, which is more successful than 98 percent of the coaches in the past seven years with a locker room that constantly raves about how together they are year in and year out.

This. If the boys can use it and come out as the more physical team, then the game is going to be a lot of fun for us

The chiefs part is most annoying to me though....as if we didn't put up the "perfect game" two years ago when it was like zero degrees in the playoffs

Agree. Plus I'm sure we have staff prepping for KC already, while KC has to keep two teams on their radar

  6. This is great post, this is what message boards (and pub sports talk) are all about

You play him. If the wild card matchup was more favorable, maybe it's a thought. But the path as the 2 seed is SO much easier...Pitt/ind/hou at home round one, plus one of KC and MIA goes out immediately (they both know us better than anyone), that's massive.

Then another home game, avoiding the ravens in round two

Then if the ravens lose, we stay home for the CG. Come on now.

Yeah I pointed out in another thread the Chargers scored 4 FGs on drives that started at or before the 50, and we allowed a TD instead of a FG after Harty's fumble. That is 16 points legitimately given up by the defense against a UDFA QB throwing to his #3 and #4 WRs and down to his 3rd center. Inexcusable performance against that crew IMO.

I hope McDermott learned something after the first Patriots debacle. That was probably the worst defensive performance of any team this season. I am begging him not to call a bunch of stupid and predictable blitzes that Zappe simply dumps off for chunk yardage. I want him to call more man than usual - against this group of weapons, I would much rather trust our guys to stick to their man than give Zappe easy holes in zone coverage to exploit.

On offense this is one of those weeks where I want Allen to play reserved. No need to push the envelope with cross body deep throws and the like, not with Bailey Zappe on the other side. Smart conservative football and just wear the Pats down slowly. I would lean heavily into throws to the RBs and TEs in this one. I don't expect Diggs and Davis to suddenly become separation machines this week.

Take every point available in this one. 4th and goal from the 2, kick the FG. Don't make the same mistake Denver made. Again it is Bailey Zappe on the other side. Any score is a huge positive.

Like, I respect what you guys are saying and that these close games against lesser teams don't feel great. But what specifically do you feel our defense did wrong? The other poster said to hold them to 170 yards. That would be 2.61 yards per play. Seems a bit unreasonable to me. This is still an NFL offense with a system that has been super productive over the years.

Do other teams look at our banged up defense and say "They're missing three all pros, two other pro bowlers, their best linebacker is running around with a banged up ankle, and their 100 million dollar pass rusher is useless. Why didn't we score 50 pts!!!!"  Perhaps their backups and young players aren't god awful? What do you actually know about their third string center?

The Chargers did it last week and did OK with virtually no talent

Did they? They had 273 yards on 65 plays, took five sacks, and kicked a bunch of field goals thanks in part to great drive starts after turnovers. That yards per play would rank at the bottom of the league, looking at season long averages

Believe it or not, I can think you guys put way too much stock in the media and overreact AND agree McD has sucked late in games AND think that he's a hell of a lot more accomplished than 90 percent of NFL coaches and be willing to support him to work through our current situation.

The social media police can't even do anything about it.

I’ve spent my 20 year-career reading people. It isn’t necessarily the words that they say, it’s body language, tone, intent, cadence, confidence, etc… Authenticity is one of the most important qualities in a person. He lacks that.

McDermott always felt like a bit of a fraud to me. He seemed like that friend’s dad that you didn’t really like growing up. He felt like he’d be nice to your face but deep down didn’t want you around his kid. One of the least surprising things about this article was the part about him being annoyed that the WRs bought Chad Hall that truck. That feels “on brand.” This isn’t meant to be a comparison but do you think Mike McDaniel would care if his WRs bought their coach a truck? That guy feels REAL. That’s not meant to say “McDanel = good and McDermott = bad.” I think that we’d all agree that McDaniel feels more authentic than McDermott.

I do not think that McDermott was “admiring” the terrorists. He isn’t evil. He’s just fake. I think that he poorly chose his words. He has spent the last half-dozen years trying to keep things tight within OBD. I believe that he believes that’s what’s best for the team. I also believe that it’s because he doesn’t want all of “the truths” out there. It’s a little of that too.

I don’t want him gone because he said something stupid in 2019. I want him gone because isn’t the guy to take this team across the finish line IMO.

If you only judged bill belichick off his press conferences, you'd probably come to the conclusion that he was a insecure douche bag loser also.  The idea that press conferences reflect the success of day to day operations of an NFL team is the problem. I get it, that's all fans have to cling to and dopa-hits from posting on social media and having your opinions validated feels good. But it still doesn't necessarily mean anything. It's media, it's embellished and twisted and slanted and manipulated, in both directions

That's likely true of 95% of the people who are having this teenager reaction to the story, including McDermott, who once again evaded responsibility for everything in the piece except for the dumb 9/11 story. That was the LEAST damning of everything in the story, but has attracted the most commentary. It was one of many weird anecdotes in the story and not really that important vs the other more important points, namely that McD freezes in big games and is a very shaky leader at many points. 13 seconds is the prime example. Is anyone screeching about that anecdote?

So, just to be clear on this point, people are upset because he didn't come out and line by line substantiate every negative thing that a slew of anonymous people said by a reporter that isn't credentialed to cover the team?  Why do people think that we're all entitled to hear about every word and thing that happens behind closed doors, or every private thought that the team shares with each other, and if we don't hear about it then it didn't happen?

We didn't even hear about the 9/11 thing for four years, but by all accounts he took accountability then behind closed doors.  Why are we so quick to assume that he doesn't do the same with other things and we just don't hear about it?  There's absolutely nothing good that can come of engaging with the press on this stuff, especially in the world of social media where this sort of outrage happens daily.  All it can do is cause distractions, misinterpretations, and drama.

It's three days before our biggest game of the season, and somehow because McD didn't come out and address a playoff game failure from two years ago, or he doesn't come to every press conference like a sad sack to talk about how much of a spineless loser he is, that means that he's a clueless tyrant behind closed doors and everyone hates him.

Dont see it. That would mean:

HOU has TEN twice and and NYJ, CLE, IND. I think they get to 10 easy. Losses to IND and CLE help them get to 10.

IND has CIN, PIT, ATL. LVR, HOU. They need three and losses to HOU, CIN, PIT help those teams get to 10.

CLE has JAC (No T Lawrence), CHI, HOU, NYJ, CIN. Again they lose to CIN, HOU, JAC help those teams get to 10.

PIT has IND, CIN, SEA, BAL. They lose to IND, CIN they are helping those teams and win they are closer themselves.

CIN has IND, MIN, PIT, KC, CLE - same as PIT. They beat IND, PIT and CLE and they may get to 10 wins, lose and each of those teams adds another win.

JAC most losable games is CLE without T Lawrence. They will get 2 wins vs TB, CAR, TEN, BAL.

DEN and LAC are least likely to get to 10. But they play each other twice so one of them is at 7. If DEN sweeps they need 2 more vs LVR, DET, NE...its possible. If LAC sweeps they need 3 vs LVR, BUF, KC...unlikely.

Just too many teams at 7 wins already. For 3 to not get to 10 it would take a lot of splitting games and losing to some bad teams while beating good ones. Most likely JAC and HOU get to 10. If CLE wins this week they likely get to 10. Then between IND, PIT, CIN, DEN I think more than one of them gets there too. So BUF needs to get to 11.

Everyone is writing off tiebreakers, but we have five conference losses while most others have 3 or 4. If we go 4-0 in conference and they drop a couple AFC games, it's not unreasonable to think that we can still get a tiebreaker over the teams we haven't lost to directly

Agreed. My only comment is that if we lose this one, then also Cowboys become a must win game too. I still find it very unlikely that we can get it with 10-7.

So win this one and save the opportunity to lose for Cowboys game :)

I think there's a lot of talk about our conference record being so bad (because it is currently), but it's common in recent history for teams to get in with 5 (or even 6) conference losses.  I wouldn't write us off completely at 10-7 as long as we go 4-0 against the AFC from here on out.  All the teams around us still play each other, and we haven't lost to Houston/Pitt/Cleveland/Indy so they don't have that tiebreaker.

Not that it'll feel any better if we don't take this game, but, just to dispel the notion that every game is a must win from here on out--I think the NFC games are the ones that we can afford to lose, if any

It's actually quite an accomplishment that McDermott as HC and DC has built a defense that is somehow surviving the injuries and still making opponents work hard to get something.

First off, thank you Shaw for taking the time to post this.  Been lurking around here and the BBMB since College in 2004/05 and have been a long time fan of your takes and writing.

While I can't argue with the above statement, I feel like the team has become way sloppier and less disciplined overall since McD took over the D.  Especially on Special Teams, where outside of Bass we've been terrible.  There's never been a doubt that McDermott can coach a defense--it always felt like he was able to step in and right the ship when we'd slump with Frazier.  But I can't help but wonder if we'd be better off and have more wins overall if he had hired a D-Coordinator and continued to focus on overseeing all three phases.  It feels like he empowered those guys to run with their respective units, and it's sort of blown up in his face.

I'd be surprised if he was gone regardless of our final record, but if he does end up getting canned, I think that decision is his un-doing.

It sucks that we have already been knocked down as the Chiefs main rival.  It’s now the Bengals.  When next season starts the Bills will prob be lumped in with the Ravens, Chargers, Jags, etc.  Maybe even picked by some to finish 2nd in the AFC East.

Possibly with lower expectations and fewer injuries the team will overperform in the playoffs should they get there.

Why do we as a fanbase care so much about this?  Does it somehow help the performance of the team to be the heavily favored juggernaut of the league?  If we start 4-0 next year, we'll once again be touted as a super bowl favorite.  If anything, you'd rather be doubted--look at the Bengals, who use every scrap of doubt they can to get really ticked off before each game

  18. The dolphins lost like five straight when they started playing good teams. They're not the near-powerhouse everyone thinks they are and everyone will continue to adjust to what their coach likes to do. It's hard to score points and win consistently with no explosive plays and no running game.

The Pats are so far away on offense. You just can't win 11-12 games scoring 20ppg or less.

The Jets with a good vet QB, that defense, and the easier last place schedule will be frisky

Not sure why everyone thinks we're going to be so much worse without massive upgrades. There was one team that handled us this year and they may win the super bowl. Believe it or not, top five QBs usually win a lot of games.

Our secondary is much better than it was a month ago and Cincy is now down 3 OL.  If our Defense can’t put out a strong performance with all that, then Beane really needs to decide whether all this defensive investment is worth it.

Meanwhile, I’m very much ready for Josh Allen to shut some of these people up.  It’s just comical right now, some of these hot takes.

Schrager has just become Bill Simmons' mouthpiece, he can't jeopardize his weekly spot on Bill's podcast where he gets to feel like the he's part of the cool kid gang with Solak and the Ringer crew.  It's too bad, because he's well connected and

Where is the bragging?  A few quotes are put on twitter and some of you are crazy fragile. Here is wht the guys said in full context:

"At the end of the day, what people got to realize and understand, we the big dog of the AFC and that's just what it is," Mixon said after Saturday's practice. "For anything to happen, it goes through us."

"We know what our end goal is and in order to get to that end goal we got to get through Buffalo," Mixon said. "We got to keep one week at a time and everything else take care of itself."

Mixon praised Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano but added that "they're not the [Baltimore] Ravens."

"The best thing about is they're going to have to play us honest," Mixon said. "If you want to cheat, whatever you want to do, we're going to make you pay, whichever way you want to do it. That's on you, however y'all want to play it.

"But at the same time, we're going to play our game and we're not going to let nobody dictate what we wanna do. That's just what it's going to be."

"The Bills, what better team would you be able to go up and put your best against?" Mixon said. "It's a great opportunity for us, but at the same time I know our guys, we [are] ready."

    https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/35353953/big-dog-afc

We're fragile? Lol. We're fans defending our players on our message board after Mixon made some random, weird comparison to the Ravens that was obviously meant to be a slight. You've now traveled to an opposing team's message board and posted the same defense about 20 times tonight. Projection much?
