Here is my first attempt at the final 53 and also who I think starts come week 1 based on camp reports ahead of our first preseason game.  Obviously some of these are certain locks, and others are fluid and preseason could change some of them:

Preseason is going to be quite important I think this year to the final makeup on this roster at several key positions.  And not just for backup roles, quite a few starting roles up for grabs too as we all know.  I would say RB, TE, DE, CB2, and KR (although I think McKinzie is now a pretty strong favorite for KR/PR duties) are all spots where not only is depth chart uncertain, but the starting spot is certainly in play as well.

My first stab at the final 53 (starters listed in bold first, followed by backups)

    QB Allen - Trubisky

    RB Singletary - Moss, Brieda

FB - Gilliam (not in bold because we wont ever "start" a FB in this offense, but Gilliam will be the only FB on the roster)

    TE Hollister - Knox

WRS Diggs and Sanders - Davis, Kumerow

    Slot WR Cole - McKenzie

OL:  Dion, Jon, Mitch, Cody, Daryl - Ike, Bates, Brown, Doyle

    LDE:  Hughes - Obada, Boogie

    RDE:  AJE - Addison, Rousseau

DT:  Star & Oliver - Phillips, Butler, Zimmer

    WLB:  Milano - Smith

    MLB:  Edmunds - Matakevich

    SLB:  Klien - Adams

    LCB:  Tre - Taron

    RCB:  Levi - Dane, Lewis

    SS:  Poyer - Neal

    FS:  Hyde - Johnson, Hamlin

PR/KR:  Mckenzie (already counted above to the 53 total)

    K:  Bass

    P:  Haack

    LS:  Ferguson

    NOTES ON ABOVE:

As you can see I have AJE beating out Addison, Singletary staying atop the depth chart, Levi starting, and Hollister Beating out Knox.

At CB, I think Dane is still in the mix, but I think Levi has got a sizable enough lead that its probable he holds down the starting job week 1.

With AJE, I think they want to get some of that youth on the field and AJE has apparently been tearing up camp.  With Addison being older, rotating him in to keep him fresh makes a lot of sense even though Addison has been getting his own share of praise too and still could start come week 1.  AJE and Hughes is a nice balance of vet and youth, with a nice combo of vet and youth rotating through as well.

At RB, I think all 3 of them have had good moments in camp, but Moss is dinged up again and coming off an injury.  Singletary has been looking good in camp, so I think he holds onto his starting spot to start the season with Brieda being more used as a change of pace back.  Honestly, I think our run game is going to be a lot like SF had when Brieda was there, any given week one of them can be the lead dog and have a big game.  I think we will have a good overall ground game, with no one guy dominating the season touches as they ride the hot hand or game plan each week.

With Hollister and Knox, the guy I want to win the job is Knox just based on the matchup problems his physical ability can create.  But he didn't have a very consistent camp, and that opens up the door for Hollister, who was pretty solid in his opportunities in Seattle.  We won't know if Hollister is a true threat to beat out Knox until we get to see some in game action, but my pick right now is more based on Knox lack of momentum coming out of camp.  This is really a toss up for me right now on who will start week 1, either one of them could or even someone not even on the roster yet...see note below :)

    • NOTE:  (Queue the eye rolls) Don't rule out a move before the end of preseason for another TE if Knox and Hollister struggle at all this preseason.  I don't think Beane will make a move until he see's them in some games to get a better feel if we even need to or not.  But Beane has proven he is not afraid to make a move at any point in a season if he thinks it makes our team better.  And if Knox and Hollister struggle at all this preseason, get ready for the daily dose of "Ertz" rumors again lol, although there are more potential options beyond just Ertz that could fit into Beane's target list.

Speaking of trades, after the draft I have previously speculated, like many, that Addison (or maybe Hughes, but less likely) could be someone who gets traded if AJE, Obada, and the rookies keep impressing.  And while I won't rule it out, the more I think about it, the less likely I think it happens.  If I had to guess right now, I think we keep all 6 DE's and constantly rotate fresh legs to help wreak havoc in a year we are expected to challenge for a SB.  ESPECIALLY after how they saw the Bucs get to Mahomes and beat the Chiefs in the SB.  And right now, it appears we have 4 starting quality DE's and 2 high quality rookies for our future.  Thats a lot of pass rush fire power for us to have fresh to go after Mahomes and the Chiefs, the biggest foe in our path to a SB.

A really good and well thought out post. Roster spots are at a premium this year an a few of our "traditional" practices of roster make up will have to change. Hopefully a few tough cuts will be IR'ed. I think if Taiwan can reasonably be replaced as a gunner he is cut. I have heard that they have been trying Brieda and Kumerow  as gunners...  I see 4 DT's ( Oliver, Star, Harrison, & Zimmer) and 6 DE's.  Rousseau, Basham, AJE, are locks Obada is fast approaching that status. That leaves the 2 vets and Johnson...One has to go and I'd like to keep Johnson. I think we then roll with 5 LB's ( Edmunds, Milano, Klein, Matakevich, Adams)  ,6(7) CB's ( 'Tre, Wallace, Dane, Taron, Neal, Lewis/Wildgoose) and 4 safeties ( Hyde, Poyer, Johnson, Hamlin). 2 QB's( Allen, Mitch)3 RB's ( Singletary, Moss, Brieda) ,1 FB (Gilliam), 3 TE's(Knox, Hollister, Sweeney), 6(7)WR's(Diggs, Saunders, Cole, McKenzie, Davis, Kumerow/Hodgins) & 9OL ( Dawkins, Ford, Mitch, Mongo, Williams, Brown, Bates, Ike, Doyle) and the 3 ST specialists brings us to 53 choosing between a 7th CB or WR for the last spot whichever player they think they can sneak onto the PS being cut.

    1.   Lawson...Last season not only was the middle of the D a problem but so was setting the edge, this is where I hope to see Basham excel. Groot's length and give him some time to get his body right, as mentioned that's a lot of 1st round picks along the DL. This is the 2 Vets last year most likely. I'd still look to deal Hughes(I'd prefer it be Addison, but who wants him?) for a 2cb type, this isn't a knock on Wallace but more the guys behind him an injury to 'Tre and we are hurting.  If Wallace steps up GREAT... If not I think the wise move is to draft one in the 1st, 2 lock down corners w/ this front 7 and IF they develop. Get that big nickel piece and it's lights out!                                                                            I agree about the offense, I think it be will more diversified this season with the new pieces and a more competent run game. I highly doubt Josh will regress, I look for him to be even better. He wants to earn his money and then some, by the end of this contract it will be a bargain.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 As for NE, how can they not be better than last year? I don't see them beating us out of the division, but overtaking the phins that I can see. My enthusiasm is high for this team. I can see really see the pieces falling into place  this year, CB health not withstanding. I remember watching OJ on T.V., then his trade to the 49ers, the 70's dominance of Shula, The Chuck Knox "we're talking proud, bermuda triangle, if it wasn't for Fergy's damn gimpy ankle...Mini drought, Kelly rejection, then parade...Then the golden years but still no brass ring. Then the real drought capped off by Rex,ouch! A miracle Dalton hail mary...Playoffs! No chance of going anywhere but home, then the purge and the drafting of Allen. I MORE than trust the process, would anyone be surprised if say Oliver, Ford, A.J., Edmunds, a Rookie make the leap, some unknown (does Kumerow even count?) ...Hell Yeah I'm pumped...Go Bills!

  2. My thoughts regarding the locker room and topic. It's clear to me that they value the "little guy" that comes out of obscurity and performs. If "little guy"  Zimmer clearly outperforms Butler and gets cut because of a contract , how well does that go over? To further my point we are clearly keeping all the kids and if Obada clearly is their 4th best DE on the team. Addison is the leader it appears, Johnson has value on teams and then there's Hughes who is not getting sneaked on the practice squad and  still has some trade value. Do we roll with 5 linebackers cut Taiwan and keep him too? That's 12 DL if you keep them all, the best option in my opinion is trade Hughes and cut Butler.

  3. My 1st thought was Roberts but the more I thought about it I realized while he was a very good KR he was just an average PR. McKenzie showed more in the Miami game. He was a specialist occupying a WR spot on the roster. We are loaded this Year at the position and hard cuts will be made. Not to even mention the ramifications on the Cap in a year when it went down. I settled on Marlowe because when he was on the field he made plays. Saunders eases the loss of Brown but his speed may still be missed  on the outside.

  4. Like everyone else I also root for every Bill and even a few past ones (Fitz!)...We know Wallace can provide adequate coverage but I'd love to see Dane upgrade the #2 corner and allow them to play more coverage concepts now that they wouldn't have to cover for Levi's lack of athleticism. It would be great to be able to get more aggressive the next time we see the Chiefs and not have to sit back in zone all day.

  5. Stafford stuck out big-time on this list as he has always been a upper tier QB but never had any chance to succeed in Detroit. No one could have in that situation. Fitz is who he is everyone loves him and he gets everyone around him to play their best.  He seems to be aging like fine wine as his numbers keep improving but he is still very hot & cold but man when he's HOT watch out! So if you exclude those guys it's not looking too good for the others on the list. Wentz seems to have completely come undone and I'm not sure if even Reich can fix him. Darnold was in a no win situation in NY much like Stafford was but I think his ceiling is only that of an average QB. Goff was in a very good spot in LA but proved to be too limited and was shipped out and is also just average. That leads me to Winston who has the highest ceiling of the remaining guys on the list and set up to succeed on a very good team. Can Peyton get his level of play to match the level of talent? That remains to be seen but is my best bet. As for the second question...I always have rooted for Fitz and it's so much easier when he's not in the AFCE. I would love to see him finally lead a team to the playoffs and at the cowboys expense is an extra bonus.

  6. OK, this is how I see it...Edmunds maybe miscast in the middle but I don't blame them for trying he is a massive man in the middle. Brass tacks here, if his instincts don't improve and he is still missing assignments, miss reading gaps, etc. I'd still take the flyer and put him in the 'Zo role, that is where he excelled in college and where he may fit best. I hate to say it but he'll never come close to Luke Kuechly, but who can? He is still a very good player and just maybe miscast as a MLB.

  7. I gave this draft a solid B. I liked both the DE taken they offer different skill sets and could both be very good starters soon. My only gripe is doubling down on OT's when Doyle could have been had later and several good options at 1DT were still on the board. The CB/value never lined up for us until the late rounds in which I believe they did well as usual. Let's hope they are right and Jackson beats out Wallace, some of these pick contribute right away as rotational players, back-ups and ST. Like has been stated before sure the other contenders seemed to have filled some holes, WE didn't have any really. This draft is a set up for the long run and I'm all for it!

Yup.  Really feeling that this draft is pretty much over for us.  It’s a shallow pool due to so many players taking the extra season of eligibility and I always consider 6th and 7th round picks just priority FAs anyway.  Maybe we get a guy that falls to us in the fifth but I think it’ll be pretty picked over by then.  And there’s a real possibility that it would be a DT.  That’ll act be funny even though we could use a 1T in the pipeline.

I wouldn't trade away the rest of the draft for 1 player and I don't believe Beane would either. Yes, we still need a 1 tech and hopefully 1 falls to one of our 5th rd picks. There are other needs to fill as well. Trust the process, let Beane do his thing.

  9. Like many on here I had JOK as the BPA left on the board and was initially disappointed w/ the selection. After sleeping on it I have come to like the pick. He provides us w/ a young DE that was a huge need where JOK is more of a luxury pick and LB was not even close to a need as Edge was. BTW, I cheered when both rb's came off the board before us and was hoping Newsome would fall to us.

  10. I think a one of the top corners left, I would love to see JOK fall to us but that is a pipe dream. I think we need to come out of this draft w/ a better option at the big nickel role. The pass rushers of this class look weak esp. at # 30, finding a starter opposite 'Tre could go a long way in helping the pass rush. I don't hate Samuel either, but ideally would prefer a bigger corner opposite 'Tre.
