  1. I saw a few plays where Hines was used as a decoy on a jet sweeps. In those plays, the linebacker paused on his pursuit and opened a running lane for or RB’s. That tells me that the Patriots were worried about his potential and prepared as such. I hardly count Hines as a waste and he played a roll in the success of our offense last night. Not to mention his reliability catching punts.

  2. I live in the Cleveland area and the fans I know are unhappy with the Watson trade, but not to the point of turning their backs on the Browns (these fans are proven loyal). If you ever went to a Browns v. Steelers game, the number of T-shirts on the streets calling out Ben Rothlisburg and the rape allegations were astounding. Talk radio would be flooded with fans calling out Ben and asking how the Steelers and the NFL could support such a guy. Now The tables are turned on these same fans and in their view the Browns organization is no different to the hated Steelers as it relates to the topic of alleged rape. It’s a tough pill to swallow for the fans I know and some have joked with me that they will turn to the Bills. I’m sure if the Browns win games, fans will justify Watson’s character, but I’m sure Steelers fans will bring up rape allegations as Browns fans did about Ben and the rivalry will continue to brew. As A Bills fan, I’m glad the Bills seek out character players to the best of their ability.

the biggest problem I see is the refs are part-time, have other full-time jobs for the most part, and only work once a week....

Example, remember Johnny Grier, from days gone by...used to work for my company Monday until Friday noon...when he would cut-out for his NFL weekend assignment.

The good news is that certainly they have development process, post-game meetings, reviews, grading, film-work.

and have points of emphasis to focus on, esp player (qb) safety which we ultimately appreciate but hate when called.

I also think younger refs, esp retired players, even college guys, if they show interest, acumen (physcial and mental testing) should be part of a development program rather than the oil executive pipeline of old.

As a high school ref  (and some low level college) of several sports, for several years, I submit that refs do their best work when they have muscle memory working (mental and physical) this comes from working a series of games in the right balance of not being under-worked nor over-worked...

I dont see the part-time model changing, and I do see those touchy (ticky-tack) calls made in the interest of player safety continuing as well which are maddening but proper when you think about it...

Your point about part time refs is well said. Full time refs would have time to watch film on the players to understand their tendencies and style of play. For example, some quarterbacks slide at the end of a scramble and often wait for the last minute to do so, setting up for a personal foul on the defense. Full time refs can see that on film and hold the flag if the QB slides late and is hit by a defender. Also could cut down on flops and unnecessary holding calls.

  4. This is a good thread topic and I’m enjoying the comments.
    1. the Players will come out of this game tougher and better prepared.
    2. Bills fans are now in position to endure nail biters in the playoffs. It’s what many of us have been envious of Pats* fans for so many years. ENJOY IT, it’s worth the blood pressure.
    3. some are saying that the competition has the blue print to beat the Bills. I say perhaps they do, but our coaches will be watching both AFC games today and we’ll have a blueprint on them too.
    4. I was at the playoff game when the Bills lost to Jacksonville. It ended up as Jim Kelly’s last game and I never thought it would take this long to see a playoff win. The Colts threw the sink at us and it wasn’t enough. On to the next, I’m sure it will be a good one.

    go Bills!
