McD passing on Mahomes and Watson scared me . I hope he has a better QB to target or Peterman is the lottery ticket .

I hate the price of trading up unless you see another Goff or Wentz , that I can't judge.

Mahomes hasn't done anything so...as for Watson, I think they felt it would've been redundant getting him.  His play was similar to Tyrod's.  Shorter QB with at the time accuracy issues and scrambled a lot.  That probably raised red flags to them.  It potentially ended up being a mistake.  However, look at all of the running QBs that have come out of the draft lately.  A lot of them seem to be getting hurt frequently in the early part of their career.  Maybe they wanted a pocket passer instead.

How about, you know, like  . . . FITTING THE SCHEMES TO THE PLAYERS?

Oh, no, we're too smart for that.

Well that'd be nice but the coaches have coached in specific schemes for a long time.  Frazier and McDermott are known for the cover 2 just like Rex was known for his defense...just like Wade Phillips is known for his defense and so on.  All coaches specialize in certain schemes.  If they don't know how to coach the scheme it makes it harder.  Matching the players to the scheme takes longer but in the end I think will be more successful.  It just requires patience to let them fill the roster with their guys but Buffalo fans don't have patience.  Understandably so, but if we ever want to get out of this rut...maybe we should try something different

What a load of crap.....knows the system...bridge players.....any more cliches....it's about talent and Tolbert should not be a No.2 RB anywhere in the league

I absolutely think having bridge players that know the system and have already played in it is helpful.  That's what all teams do, bring players over from their last coaching spot to bridge the gap until they find the right player to fill the position.  I doubt Tolbert will be the number two running back next season but they didn't exactly have a full offseason and they had multiple holes to fix, I think it's a harsh overreaction to come down on them for that.  It's not about this season for them.  They are trying to build a consistent contender not a one year pretender.  They've been here less than a year haha

Can you show recent examples of teams that took several years to build into a consistent playoff contender.  IE teams whose current head coaches did not make the playoffs in their first 3 years as coaches, but then went on to great successes down the road.  Tom Landry, Chuck Noll and the 70's don't count as recent.

I never said they wouldn't be successful in the first three years...I said it would take about three years for them to replace the old regimes inherited players with their guys.  Having guys that don't fit the scheme has been one of the biggest problems over the last decade and it will just continue unless we let regimes play out a little. It's been less than a season and people are already calling for heads.  Belichick sucked his first year in New England, Coughlin sucked as well and coughlin lost a few of the players in the locker room but he had a plan just like these guys do IMO.  Stay the course and trust the process.  I think we finally chose the right guys, I'd be nice to see them get a a few years for a change.

Maybe , but I think the LBs have been solid (at least when Milano was in there) but since Marcy got traded we can't stop the run. Having two 340 pounders (from my draft) will go along way to giving us "better" LBs.

I don't think he wants two 340 pound guys in the middle.  Carolina drafted Kawonn Short when McDermott was there and he produced high sack numbers.  On of those guys in the middle has to be able to penetrate and get of the line quickly.  I'm not saying we don't need a pair of new fat boys but the linebackers aren't even close to what he prefers in his scheme.  The front seven as a whole is what made his defense work so well in Carolina.  The linebackers do much more than just stop the run in his scheme, they blitz and cover down the field.  The players we have are very limited and slow.  Two starters are on the wrong side of 30 and Brown doesn't fit the fast linebacker mold.  I think they need to be replaced just as bad as the two DT spots.  They have a lot of cap space and draft picks and will have even more cap space once the offseason comes and they decide to cut some players.  If Tyrod doesn't stick around, that's a large chunk of salary that will free them to fill a lot of these holes.  We shall see...just saying, I wouldn't overlook the linebacker position.  Carolina drafted two linebackers in the first round while he and Beane were in Carolina...

I don't think Darnold will be there ,just hoping.

I used draftek rankings, so blame them.

Andrews is a great pass catcher, and  basically a big WR. Clay oft injured and O'leary is solid but we need more.

I went heavy on the lines hoping we can a dress the other issues in FA.

I just think linebacker is too important to McDermott to pass on.  That whole unit needs to be upgraded.

    1. QB Sam Darnold - USC

    1. OT Trey Adams - Washington

    2. OG Quenton Nelson - ND

    2. TE Mark Andrews - OK

    3. DE Chad Thomas - Miami

    4. DT Olive  Sagapolu - Wisconsin

    5. RB LJ Scott - Michigan St

    6. DE Porter Huston - USC

    6. DT Greg Gaines - Washington

The first 4 guys I see being drafted ahead of where you have them.  I would pass on a tight end unless you see them freeing themselves from Clay's contract.  Nick Leary is a nice complement to a number 1 tight end.  I'd expect a little more balance in the first 4 picks.  A DT needs to be taken earlier than the 4th if they don't address that in FA but I like that you added youth to the lines.  We need to go heavy on the lines.  One thing I am scratching my head about is the absence of a linebacker.  He took two last year and could see him doing the same this year.  I expect one early, I like Tegray Scales.  Darnold I would think would be taken earlier if he even comes out.

I wish I knew what the OC and HC are trying to do with the offense.  I think they want a pocket passer;  however, they should let Tyrod be Tyrod.  Unleash the beast.  While I don't think this is a sustainable formula;  however, it's what TT does best.  A moving TT gives us a chance against LAC and KC.

I think they are looking for a player to fit their system, not them creating a system around a player.  If he doesn't fit what they are trying to do...a change will be made

It's a long shot that you can completely tear down and rebuild an NFL roster in this day and age and hang around to see the results. The best rebuilding jobs get the good young players to "buy in" instead of shipping them off so that the turnaround goes more quickly.

Well that's the direction they are going...I suggest we all get on board or we won't see a playoff appearance for another decade.

Exactly. Right. And for me, Gaines/Darby is a wash. Both played well, both had injuries. So that's a win. But I think a healthy Sammy Watkins for one year > injured Jordan Matthews for one year. Of course the season we swap them, Sammy stays healthy and Matthews gets hurt. Of course. They made the move for locker room reasons as much as anything, and while that's a success, Watkins would have been a difference maker this year, finally with a full year with Tyrod. Plus Benjamin. Even if we just say goodbye to Watkins afterward, I mean you don't get the second round draft pick, but this year it's not like your roster is better without elite talent, even underperforming and with issues. Your locker room is better but not your roster, not for this year.

It's about the long term success for them.  I think this year was a wash to see who fit the system and who doesn't.  Whoever doesn't will be shown the door I think.  The draft picks will be used to replace the talent with their guys.  That's why the

    the deals all make sense.

  11. 1 minute ago, LA Grant said:

McDermott and Beane have a vision and they are executing it and they've seen success, more than they anticipated -- Beane and McDermott have both said that. I think this team this year would be much better if it still had Watkins and Dareus, regardless of how underperforming they are, particularly when you could have still had KB and EJ Gaines and even Jordan Matthews if you really wanted. But they wouldn't be as good as they want to be next year without them gone this year, so. It's a value judgment. But they have a clear vision and that's an improvement from the last X amount of years.

Those guys don't fit the future...that's what the personnel moves have been for...to repave the roster.  Guys like Matthew and Gaines were for this year.  It's all about bringing in their type of players.  Hope they get a chance to see if they can reach their goals.

  12. 14 minutes ago, Shotgunner said:

I doubt they do that, but Peterman is the type of QB fit for the system. Tyrod is a square peg in a round hole, and it's not neccesarily his fault either.

Make the system fit TT, or put in the QB that fits the system.

I have had suspicions that they threw TT to the fire intentionally, so he could either become what they want him to be, or justify releasing or trading him if he's bad.

I think your last sentence nailed it on the head.  See if he's gonna be the guy for the system.  Now that we know, we can move on.

Do you think they were too impatient with Rex?

Not having players for his scheme was Rex's excuse.

I think he was going to fail anyway but if it's just about being patient then they should have been patient with him.

Adapting systems to the talent on hand is the prudent path.........it's not like these schemes McD and Dennison run are game changers.........they are pretty simple.......which is why the team was able to adapt to them pretty quickly.

But once teams get tapes on the personnel in these new schemes........you need the talent to keep them working and the Bills have been careless with the talent in-house and there appears to be a lot of frustration and business decisions going on out there.........which is worst-case scenario for someone trying to change the quitting culture.

I think Rex was going to fail anyway because he was a lazy coach.  McDermott doesn't seem like that to me.  If they think these are the guys...then patience.  McDermott's high character players will fit better in a suspension happy league anyway.

There’s absolutely no reason this needed to be a multi year rebuild. Fans went hook line and sinker on a narrative about how bad the cap was.... we now also believe that every young talent was a cancer... it’s ridiculous.

In a suspension happy league, I think getting guys like Dareus who is one more away from a full season or something like that.  That's a bad influence on the rest of the team.  The culture needed to be changed...it takes a lot of house cleaning to do that.  Those that didn't buy into the system would just be more drama in the locker room.  They are taking the team a certain direction and it's opposite of what we've been doing so...yeah it will likely take some time

Theyve gone from an inside zone scheme to an outside zone scheme. Done little to nothing to address the RT position, even though it was a glaring need. Downgraded at RG for god knows why, an aging LG and overpaid the mediocre center on the tail end of his career. Oh, and our stud LT is injured. So there is that.

They've been in charge less than a full offseason...if they ignore it this offseason then there's a problem.  Patience...

I think the offense has lost faith in Dennison and his reluctance to deviate from the "his" blocking scheme no matter how ineffective it is.

    Same old, same old.

That's why we need to give the regime time to get players that fit the scheme in the building but we never do because we are too impatient.  I think that changes with this group though, they should be given the chance

I felt that the team quit as well

but I dont want to see McD get fired....I still feel like he is one of the up and coming young coaches and we need to stick with him.....

    HOWEVER

It would not shock me to see Leslie Frasier get fired......that D flat quit....we are getting no pressure.......this is not a staple of a McD defense and it would not shock me to see McDermott fire the DC and take over his duties.

While I agree to an extent, the players he has aren't examples of a McD defense.  Look at the linebackers, all are either old and slow or don't fit the system besides Milano, the front 4 doesn't have a lot of talent either...I think the coordinators just need some fresh legs before getting the boot

A properly executed turnaround in the NFL happens quickly.

You don't get to lose for 3-4 seasons anymore.........just does not work that way.........the message gets lost and once you get the stink of losing on a HC it's hard to get it off.

It hasn't even been a year man...

Preston Brown isn't old and tired though.  Neither is Humber.  Neither is Washington or Yarbrough.  Or any of the DB's.

Brown is too slow, doesn't fit the scheme.  Humber certainly looked tired at the Jets and is too slow for this scheme.  Washington I don't think fits the scheme and Yarbrough is just a backup.  Humber is 30, Lorax is 35 or something and Brown is slow...look at what he had in carolina.  Fast linebackers who could cover, defend the run and blitz.  This group isn't close to that.

If they dont win next year they probably wont see the process through to the 3rd year of their contract. They dont have time to slowly right the ship

That's the problem though, we keep cutting off regimes before they actually get a few years to establish their players into the locker room.  I believe they have a plan, I hope they are allowed to stick to it or the constant turnover will just keep hurting us

    Just now, jmc12290 said:

    I....I don't think so.

Along with a lack of talent...yeah I do.  Compare our linebackers to carolinas and tell me he's working with a lot of talent...they just need time to replace these old players that are just bridging the gap
