This is a serious question, I can't think of an example of an NFL franchise tanking where it worked?
Suck for Luck worked

Really?
How come the GOAT Brady needed an injury to force his playing time. They had the GOAT on the bench. Surely he should have been starting over Drew.
Plenty of excellent quarterbacks have had to ride the pine for years before getting their shot.
No way in hell, Taylor was getting a shot in Baltimore unless something catastrophic happened to Flacco.
As was pointed out - no coach is going to sit a proven Franchise QB that was just signed to a $100 + million deal like Flacco was. It just ain't gonna happen unless there is an injury or the guy goes Kuoandjio.
You are exactly right.
100% false.
Bledsoe's injury only accelerated the timetable on Brady. The plan was already in place to have Brady as the starter and would've most likely been put in place for 2002.

Did I say TB wasn't a good reason why? No, I did not.
It just so happens that they have also had success w/o him. Matt Cassel anyone? 11 wins wasn't it? In the 18 to 20 games that I recall w/o Brady they won 14 or 15 of them.
those are some pretty good odds.
Belichick with the patriots is 19-18 without Brady
2000: 5-11
2001: 0-1
2008: 11-5
2016: 3-1
Cassel is an average QB, not like he was some gutter scrub that went 11-5. Also, that 11-5 record was still 5 games worse than the prior year, and they missed the playoffs.
Also, think its just a coincidence that the 2000 and 2001 teams were close to the same roster yet 1 was 5-11 and the other was 11-5 and won the Superbowl? There was 1 major roster change.....Brady became the starter
If back ups having some success in NE detracts from Brady's success then Joe Montana must've been a JAG. I mean Steve Young was able to step right in and have a HOF career with the same system and team, so clearly it wasn't the QB driving those SF teams

everyone here will think i'm crazy but all the receivers mentioned here have one thing in common! Great quarter backs and a long tenure with them. I really believe Eric Moulds was a great receiver who put up 1000 yard years only falling short a couple years and he had several different quarter backs throwing to him.
except Moss.
Moss's career was with Cunningham, Culpepper, Andrew Waiter and Aaron Brooks....stop me when you see a great QB listed. He only had 32 games with Brady.
same for Megatron. He had Shaun Hill and Stafford throwing to him. Not horrible QBs, but not great ones either.
-
Well, 3.25 in New England and one of those with cassell
In the 2 full seasons with Brady the average is 18 tds, which would've been his best season in minny.
this, he played 2.5 years with Brady.
in those 32 games he had 181 receptions, 2,757 yards and 36 TD (led the league in receiving TD both years)

it does require pre-snap reads, quick decisions and throwing to spots...you know, the things your QB has shown no ability to do

Makes sense. Sammy's thinking he's going to break the bank, but Beane & McDermott are like "Not with us, you're not." Good for them.
It'll be interesting to see how it plays out in LA, now that another GM is banking on Sammy Watkins to elevate his 1st round QB to franchise QB.
Also, a team taking our #1 & #2 WRs to be their #1 & #2 WRs? That's gotta be a first.
no, sorry. they handled it wrong.
look at what Belichick did with Hightower this offseason. He was saying the same things about getting paid, etc. Bill kept him to the end of the contract and said "ok, go test the market. see what's out there". End result, Hightower found the money he thought was out there for him wasnt and he re-signed in New England
-
37 games
2,459 yards
16.1 ypc
17 td
with EJ Manuel and Tyrod Taylor throwing you the ball are great stats. Guy has always been underrated by Bills fans with their panties in a twist over the trade to get him
-
2013 Bills...preseason game 1.
EJ Manuel wows orchestrating a perfect drive. 9-9, 68yds and a TD. The Bills offense hangs 44 on the Colts..........
-
Detroit a few years ago:
4-0 pre-season
0-16 regular season
enough said.
the only thing you can take away from a pre-season game is injuries.
this is like saying the Pats need to trade Gronk to make way for Jake Hollister because he just had 7/116 in pre-season game 1

Let's look at the list...
Here's 12 I'd move to the Hall of Good:
Jerome Bettis
Nick Buoniconti
Harry Carson
Cris Carter
Fred Dean
Tony Dungy
Cortez Kennedy
Art Monk
Jackie Smith
Jason Taylor
Andre Tippett
Aeneas Williams
And obviously 1 ex-Bill goes to the Hall of Shame:
Ralph C. Wilson
you're off base with Jason Taylor and Andre Tippett.
Tippett was the 2nd most feared LB of the 80s after LT. He played the same style and was a force, just overshadowed by LT. 100 sacks for a linebacker is absurd and he was named to the 2nd team all 80s by the HOF.
Jason Taylor is one of the premier DE/LB of the 00s, in his prime no one was feared more because he could change the game with a strip, pick or sack.
139.5 sacks
775 tackles
46 forced fumbles
29 recoveries
8 int
9 td
1x DPOY, 3x 1st team All Pro, 2nd team All 00s team by HOF
Carter and Monk look worse now because of the explosion of passing in the game, but at the time they retired they were #2 and #3 in receptions and yards. That's a HOF'er

If I remember right, were we not one of the two teams that beat the Patriots last year? I hate them as much as the next Bills fan! Death to Brady! Death to Bellicheat!
I mean, if you want to gloat about a win against a 3rd string rookie QB with detached ligaments in his throwing hand...then go for it
-
Been saying it for years. You need to blitz Brady early and often. Yes he will beat you many times but it only takes a few hits, a tipped pass, or a bad throw to stop them. You can't stop him by not blitzing. Best take your shot and see what happens.
100% false.
Blitzing Brady is the best way to guarantee a quick and painful death. He will march down the field all day if you blitz.
The way to beat him is to get pressure up the middle with your front 4 only, and play press man. Have to get to him without taking bodies away from coverage, combined with the press man delaying the receivers enough to where he cant get the quick pass out before the rush gets home. Also edge pressure wont do it, he is too good at sliding around and stepping up in the pocket.
In terms of the point of the thread....yawn. The Pats worrying about the Bills is like a hammer worrying about the nail
-
. for the 1000th time, the offense in the passing game needs to be better, but the defense was the biggest problem in 2016.
5 playoff teams gave up more yards than the Bills
4 playoff teams gave up more points than the Bills
The Falcons and Raiders were worse in both categories
-
TT led the bills to the 7th highest scoring offense.
if Rex had led the defense to the 7th fewest points allowed.....
the bills would have made the playoffs and this conversation would look a whole lot different.

For those that are so certain the NFL will be ok, think of what you would have said about boxing or MLB in the 80's. Sports change over time. The only thing that does not is money. The NFL will survive because the NFL has managed to do what no other sport has - appeal to everyone. The NFL has made strides to appeal to women, minorities, young, and old. NBA is close. But all other sports are closer to having niche fan bases than broad appeal.
Concussions will have an impact. Some athletes will look to other sports like Samarzdjia did but that will still be rare. Technology will advance. Maybe they do something radical like weight/size limits per position, seriously addressing PEDs, or other player safety rule implementations.
But in 10 years, I think the NFL will be as dominant as it is today relative to the other sports. I think viewership of all sports will decline, at least as how it is measured now(fan attendance and tv ratings), but NFL will still be most watched.
the rumors of baseball's demise have been greatly exaggerated.
2016 was the 16th year in a row the MLB set a record for revenue...
2016 revenues: NFL = 13 billion, MLB = 9.5 billion....next closest is the NBA at 4.8 billion

Looking at the past 2 years, and QBs who have started at least 18 games (27 Qualified), I've got him pretty squarely in the middle at 15. He's ahead of a few people that will make the usual crowd angry, but I've got a method to my ranking.
Taylor's rankings in QB stats:
2015:
Comp% - 16th
Yards - 23rd
Y/A - 5th
Y/G - 29th
TD - 21st
Rating - 8th
Int% - 5th
4thQ Comebacks - 23rd
GW Drives - 23rd
2016:
Comp% - 19th
Yards - 25th
Y/A - 22nd
Y/G - 27th
TD - 24th
Rating - 18th
Int% - 8th
4thQ Comebacks - 26th
GW Drives - 26th
Picture is pretty clear here. 1st year they sheltered him and leaned on the run to cover for him (as you should) which explains the contradiction of a low Int%, high Y/A but very low Y/G, Yds and TD.
In 2016 they put more of the offense on him and he failed to produce. Y/G, Yds and TD stayed in the bottom 5-10 range, and his Y/A plummeted.
Taylor is a QB that can game stats like Rating and QBR, but in actuality is not a quality QB and is not able to shoulder the load of running an offense or being the focal point of an offense. This is best proven by his complete lack of 4th Q Comebacks and game winning drives. These are situations that require an offense to move quickly through the air when the defense knows whats coming. The slow plodding run based offense is good when you're ahead, but if you cant pass the ball and engineer quick scores you are cooked when you fall behind.
-
TT has everything you want in a QB except accuracy......and that will be his downfall.
TT is a stud....but we need better.
just get the "better" QB in here BEFORE moving on from TT.
a bird in the hand is worth three in the bush....or something like that.
and the ability to read a defense pre snap
and the ability to alter the play/routes off of that read
and the ability to make a quick read and get the ball out in under 2 seconds
and the ability to anticipate when and where receivers will be open
and the ability to throw guys open
and the ability to carry the offense when its winning time

Mariota and Wilson had very similar success to Tyrod in their first few years starting. Granted, they were rookies. But their success is incredibly comparable.
Mariota - 27 Games, 30.4 Attempts per game, 1.815 TD per game, 1.63 TD/TO, 238.2 YPG
Tyrod - 29 Games, 28.1 Attempts per game, 1.621 TD per game, 3.36 TD/TO, 234.6 YPG
Wilson - 32 Games, 25.0 Attempts per game, 1.781 TD per game, 2.85 TD/TO, 219.6 YPG
Prescott - 16 Games, 28.7 Attempts per game, 1.813 TD per game, 3.63 TD/TO, 237.9 YPG
EDIT: Added Dak, Used 2 years of Wilson instead of 3
you're completely ignoring yards...where all of the above average between 25 and 50 yards per game more than Taylor
-
I agree that good QBs win the Super Bowl. With the exception of 2015 Peyton and Flacco (and that's debatable) I would say that all of those QBs are in the top half of the league. The irony is that the year the Seahawks won Wilson threw for 217 yards a game, 20 TDs and 7 INTs. He ran for 6 more. It is almost identical to what we are getting now. This is coming from someone that LOVES Russell Wilson as a player. He has "it" to me. I'm not saying that Tyrod is RW but that level of performance can win with good defense and a good running game. The Bills have half of that now.
Also, I agree that Denver doesn't win that game without Peyton.
you got your years mixed up. He won it in 2013. 3,357 yds and a 26/9 TD/INT, and rushed for another 539 yds.
you also ignore that it was only Wilson's 2nd year in the league. Yet those 3,357 yards are still 300 more than Taylor has thrown in any of his 6 years in the league.
The other difference is Wilson can throw. He makes pre snap reads, he goes through his progressions, he anticipates and throws guys open. He fully has the mental side you want in a top QB. And most importantly, he runs as a last resort...and even when he does run he keeps his eyes downfield and never abandons the chance to throw.
Taylor cant/doesnt do any of that.
edit: Flacco is like an Aikman. Average stats, but in that SB run he was lights out. 1,140 yds and 11 td to 0 int over 4 games
-
for all the crying about having to play the Pats 2x a year....its only 2 games out of 16. What's the excuse for crapping the bed in the other 14 games? 2 of which are gimme wins (Jets)
-
oh yeah?
then what about guiness draught, huh? and what about alec guiness who was English?
not so high and mighty now are you
draught is the British spelling of DRAFT. It has nothing to do with the word drought, which is the one you were looking for
-
Persecution complex much?
Sorry, but that was a pretty accurate and down the middle assessment of the Taylor situation. The management isnt sold on him and if they were they wouldnt have avoided being on the hook for the 30 mill and wouldnt have reworked his contract. Plain and simple.
Frankly they are right to have doubts. He hasnt shown any consistently good/playoff caliber play as a starter and is in a prove it or get out year. At some point you have to admit he is what he is and move on

Uh yeah, it was. Once he was with the team for a year and Belichick knew he had a good QB in Brady, the plan absolutely was Brady over Bledsoe even without the injury. Brady was outplaying him in practice and was a 7.5 mill savings in cap. The change was happening and has been reported on and proven in the years after.
It's the same thing Bill did in Cleveland when he got rid of Kosar.
