[What made you a Bills fan?]

For this week's Friday question of the day I would like to keep it easy and light. One of my personal favorite questions to ask people is simply "why". For many it's just something you're born into through family. For others it's a geographic thing. Yet others are fans of this team and have no ties to the area. No family that roots for the Bills. So the question of the day is:

 

What led to you being a Buffalo Bills fan? 

 

For me, I actually have my Mom to thank for it. She was a single mother in the 80s when it wasn't as widely normal to be such. With me at home she was raising a little boy with no male role model in the picture. She wanted me to have as normal an upbringing as other boys, so one thing she did was learn everything she possibly could about football.

 

And I grew up every Sunday with Sunday Sauce on the stove and the Bills game on watching football with my mother. She actually grew to be a big Bills fan and even took me to my first game. She let me pick 2 friends from school to bring and we were off to see the Joe Ferguson and the Bills take on the Jets. One of my fondest memories of childhood was during that game as I watched my Ma make a Jets fan that was being loud and obnoxious actually tear up and leave the game in the 3rd quarter. Yup. That was my Mom. She's been gone now for almost 28 years, and WHEN the Bills finally hoist that Lombardi, she will be the first person I think of.

 

So, what's your story? What are you the way you are (a Bills fan, in this case).

Unless you're throwing to a Randy Moss, Travis Kelce, or Ron Gronkowski, then yes, they are a dime a dozen.  QB has always been the most important position, followed by head coach.  Fortunately, we have one of those two.

One thing that is definitely true is that, in general, Bills fans refuse to criticize Allen for anything, and are quick to blame everyone else. It's pretty obvious the WRs don't appreciate that. 

I can only speak for myself, as a Bills' fan, when I say "I totally disagree with you on that one.".  I am the proud owner of a 6' cutout of Josh Allen that would get set up on gameday.  After the Jets loss in week 1 last season, I was so pissed at Josh's performance, that I hid the cutout in the garage until after we beat KC in week 14.  I also put it away rather angrily after the Cincy playoff loss.  My point is that I hold Josh to the highest standard of any player on our team because he plays the most important position.  

As far as Diggs behavior... he is who he is: an experienced, emotional WR who will make spectacular catches that will be prone to selfishness, critical drops, and petulant outbursts.  There's a reason this former 5th round pick is on his third team and Josh is still on his first.

Oh, for fork's sake...

Couldn't it be both?  McDermott (et al.) did not call the correct defense during 13 seconds, and the Chiefs were better prepared.  Besides, if we're giving credit to them and their coaching, we should also point out that the 49ers should've beat them in the Super Bowl but somehow managed to lose.  Maybe in the overall scheme of things (players, coaches, play calling, game time decisions), we're not at the Chiefs level.  I wish we were, but we're not and it sucks.

I'll put this in terms that anyone can understand.  McDermott should achieve, at least once, what Bill Belichick and Andy Reid have done multiple times: a Super Bowl victory. If he doesn't, he's no better than any other coach the Bills have had.  Right now, to me, he's the Marvin Lewis of Marty Schottenheimers, until complete post season success is achieved.  A bit harsh of me?  Yep.

Hindsight viewpoint:  Bills should've placed him on some sort of IR or such until guilt or innocence was proven.

I'd counterargue that Josh has scored more points against the Chiefs and Reid seems to outcoach McD in the playoffs.

More undisputed facts:

• Sean McDermott Bills head coach since 2017
• The Bills have made the playoffs 6 of those 7 years
• The Bill have not made it to the super bowl in any of those 7 years. 
• Only three NFL head coaches (Reid, Tomlin, Harbaugh) have been with their teams longer (all have coached Super Bowl champions in their career)
• Two other coaches have the same number of years (McVay, Shanahan) Both have been to the Super Bowl twice. One has won a Super Bowl (weaker NFC)

 

Generally speaking teams in the NFL do not seem to be patient with coaches.  Teams have fired relatively recent super bowl winners (Pederson, Bellichek, Riveria for example). Teams have fired other coaches that made the playoffs numerous times.  Some teams have been more patient (Shottenheimer, Marvin Lewis, Dan Reeves spring to mind) 

This poll is intended to record your level of virtue.  The bigger the number you pick, the more virtuous you are. 

Personally, I'd bring in Belichick and try to steal Chris Jones from the Chiefs.

It’s hard to imagine a less well prepared team going into a big game.  Levy was a good coach, not a great coach. It was clear after that game that he’d never lead the Bills to a SB win.  Do you fire a coach who has led you to three straight SB’s?  In hindsight, the answer is, yeah you probably do.  Blow it up and let your GM start the rebuild. Instead we fire the GM and keep the coach.

 

Does this give any insight to our present situation?  I think yes.  McDermott should be on the hot seat this year.  Super Bowl or bust.  If we don’t do in 2024, time to move on.

This, right here.  It was tough enough trying to beat Brady back in the day but when all you have to do is take the touchback,.......ugh.
