I don't think you need to have a medical degree to understand that Reed shouldn't play football again. If the testing says otherwise than the entire program needs to be re evaluated.

Its an interesting case because you would hope that players would value their health and well-being enough to hang it up when they needed 6 months to recover from a concussion.   But if doctors start telling players that they cannot play anymore due to history of concussions, this is encouraging players in the future to be dishonest about possible concussion symptoms in fear of losing the ability to play or even make their own decision to play or not in the future.

You have to look at the profile of the players - he does this in the later rounds as well -Vosean Joseph for instance. RD1 definitely Beane loves the athletic high ceiling guys. He has said in a past interview last year , he grades the guys in RD1 as Top-tier, Mid-tier and Bottom-tier. He likes to move around as well, with the Edmunds pick , they had him identified as a top -tier guy and were trying to move to 14 to get him. He said if a top tier is falling and if it is s position of need, they would be aggressive and get him, if it wasn't a position of need - they in most cases wouldn't move.

Beane doesn't give a lot of info out, but he doesn't lie and he is proving to be consistent in his thinking and moves....

Really good points Reed.  I had not heard Beane talk about the Top-Tier, Mid-Tier, and Bottom-Tier stuff.  I do agree that Beane gives some really good honest nuggets of information when he gives his press conferences.  Do you have any guesses at who some high ceiling, physical freak prospects might be for edge that could be available at 22 or that we could realistically move up for?  Personally I am hoping there is one Beane has his eye on as I think it is our biggest weakness.  As for WR, I am hoping we have a good one slide to us in the 2nd or even 3rd round.

What makes you believe that is how they will rank them?

Edit: I don't profess to know what the Bills' board looks like either. But I think the way you start to piece it together is look at Beane's past. Look at the guys he has drafted here and look at the guys drafted while he fulfilled senior personnel roles in Carolina. I am just not sure Epenesa fits that profile. They have taken high ceiling freak athletes - Allen with the incredible arm, Edmunds with the size, speed combo, Ed with the incredible burst and short area quickness. Maybe at #22 they are in a position where that guy doesn't drop and so they go with more a high floor and low ceiling kind of guy. It just doesn't feel to me like a Brandon Beane move. Maybe I will be proved wrong.

Really great work Gunner.  I love reading your stuff and certainly agree that we can look for trends in Beane's drafting.  I do think that this draft is harder because of having a later pick than we are used to.

  4. I said it before the play, "I hope they don't try to force it in to John Brown because he has been blanketed all day".  I understand he has been solid all year, and have nothing against him, just was going by the flow of the game.... To which I was really hoping they would go Beasley's way as he had shown the ability to beat his defender consistently that day.

Hughes this season is on the last year of his contract extension he signed in 2015 when he was coming off of back to back 10 sack seasons. Contracts in the NFL tend to be back loaded money wise. Despite his 14.5 million salary his cap hit for 2019 is 12.9 million still a bit overpaid for his production. But his cap hits the past 4 seasons were 6.17 million in 2015, 7.5 million in 2016, 10.4 million in 2017 and 10.4 million in 2018. So the Bills are in 2019 essentially paying for Hughes cheaper contract numbers early in his deal.

His cap hits in 2020 and 2021 are a modest 9.5 million each year with the ability to get out of his deal in 2021 at a low dead cap hit. The context of Hughes being paid his current number are the result of circumstances. Has he produced the sack totals the team wanted? No but his pressure numbers are good, he is stout against the run, and if you watch the games you know he is a factor. He should be a heavily productive rotation player the next 2 seasons at a fair cap number. He also has good value in the locker room.

I do suspect this team does bring in a big time edge rusher via free agency to get Hughes down to being the 2nd best pass rusher (a role he is better suited for) and the team has both the cap room to do so in a free agent class that boasts a lot of options as far as edge rushers go

I have not looked into who might be available, do you have some names that might be FAs?

  6. I respectfully disagree about this being mostly on the offense and don't think we need to can McDermott or Daboll.  I put most blame on the defense, while also realizing that Allen/Daboll made a critical mistake before the end of the 1st half...  Our defense, coaches included need to find a way to better stop the run.  They let the offense move down the field way too easily in the second half.  I think it is important to realize that we are still in a rebuild though and that our front four needs some serious improvements made to it.  Ed Oliver needs to put on more muscle/weight, Jordan Phillips is the only other DL worth his money right now.  Hughes is a liability against the run and has lost some of his sack potential, Star is mediocre, Lawson is not starter material, and Trent Murphy is mediocre at best.  The most disappointing part of all of this is that we have found a flaw that is not disappearing this season, we can only hope that with draft capital/FA signings that we can correct this area in the offseason.  And Levi Wallace has been getting picked on too.

He definitely lowers his head and more runs into the defenders helmet, but I think the defender intended to hit him high anyway. He never lowered his pad level and that added with Allen going down was bad. I'm not full tin foil like a lot of people right now because I see DBs do this all the time. Look at the hits on WRs after a missed pass and you will see very similar style hits. DBs generally have the worst tackling technique of any position group. I don't know that anyone fears JA enough to do "sweep the leg" move, especially in this game where he was a turnover machine.

I get what you are saying about DBs tackling technique and agree that I don't think the Pats player was thinking "I need to get Josh Allen out of this game or else we're going to lose" but I do see the hit as illegal and a dirty play on the defenders part.  Allen's head drops because his lower body is being held/tackled by a defender AND he is stretching forward as well as trying to hold onto the ball tightly.

There are a lot of people in this republic who are immune to things like facts and evidence. Golic apparently is one of them.

He threw it in right after a rant about how Vontaz Burfict should be suspended for his hit because the league is getting those hits out of the game, and then said the crap about Josh Allen's hit and that McDermott needs to watch the tape of the hit because it was Josh that led with his helmet.  What a load of garbage!!!!!!!!!

They did add a penalty a couple years ago about runners lowing their head, not sure it has eve been called.  I really think you have to consider the down and distance and the fact Allen was approaching the sticks on 3rd and 8.  He was going for the first down, the defender was trying to prevent it.   The play was illegal on the defenders side for sure but I have seen much worse.

I know the penalty goes both ways for dropping your head, but it seems like a stretch to say Allen lowers his head, any slight drop in his head is 100% due to the fact he is trying to hold onto the ball in preparation for the big hit he is about to take.
