I'm pretty certain HC SM has noticed our present owners don't believe in mgmt continuity as their short 2.5 years with our Bills they have looked at no less than 3 HC's, multiple DC's and OC's, and soon to be 2 GM's
So any plan not to start TT, and instead trot out a rookie 5th round QB sounds like a sure fire recipe to win only 4-6 games, and thus is a NOT a very well thought plan with regard to either long term employment, or increasing the odds of becoming a successful HC in the NFL
It would as similarly dumb as taking the #2D in the NFL, release its DC, install a new scheme, confuse the existing D starters, and claim it will be even better, we all saw that movie, it didn't end well, I think SM is a little smarter...

Great posts, my issue is I can't name any player we've moved up for recently that have worked out, so here's hoping Zay and Dawkins break that spell, lol
I'm not even sure I like our two starting safeties let alone the depth after, I know most folks feel our LB situation is the weakest part of our D, but I will continue to point out that our safeties don't have alot of NFL starting experience, so I agree a FA vet at both OLB and Safety would potentially alleviate alot of those concerns

It seems clear that our HC had the final choice on all picks and trades, good or bad
I love the players we got
If we get 3 starters and 1 depth player that's a great draft
However IMO we didn't get enough value back in the first two deals
And we continue a pattern of trading away valuable 3rd and 4th round picks
I'd describe this draft as having chosen players for needs over BPA and Sean did a great job replacing what we lost in FA or via cuts
I'm just not sure post draft and FA we improved the on field talent from last year

My problem is if 2017 goes South quickly its not an indication that HC Sean knows what he is doing
Either as HC or as one with say in team moves
Folks like me will point out that his first two trades in the draft that we didn't get full value back
Or that he gave away too many picks moving up twice
And that he gave away two potential 2018 draft picks to sign very marginal FA's
And that his remake of our secondary didn't work
Etc Etc...
It won;t be a confidence builder for us fans
Then again if he gets out and win 10 games no one will remember all the above...

On one hand I like the moves the owners have made
I never liked Rex
I think hiring HC Sean was a great move forward
And I thought it was time to move on from Whaley so I like the new direction we are headed in
However
On the other hand I'm not 100% convinced our owners know what they are doing
Or that their mgmt structure works
Their moves have not preached any sort of management continuity
Nor can I say that the 2017 off season moves look all that successful
Or that we look primed to win 10 games
They seem more like sideways moves instead of moves that actually improve the team
I am also not convinced that our HC isn't doing the exact same thing as Rex did
Churning the roster for his kind of players to play his scheme
That doesn't necessarily win more games
While I liked our draft, I don't like having to continually move up, losing other high draft picks
So I am kind of ambivalent
Wait and see approach
I just think the owners, GM, and HC messed up on whats as given to them post 2014
Now, we seem to be starting all over again...

He played real well against us opening day
Starter alot of games for the Ravens in past years
I own him in my Koch Football league
But unfort he is a somewhat over the hill very mediocre depth backup CB

I;m not against trading any player including Sammy, but it should be noted the moment you do not pick up his option, his trade value likely drops in half, as he will be an impending free agent
To my knowledge in the last 5-6 years only one impending FA was successfully traded, and they didn't get a first rounder in return
Just saying over at the old BBMB fans loved to trade Bills players daily, but when you asked the fan to name similar trades in the NFL in recent history, they never could come up with any examples, because they didn't exist, so its not so easy to make such a trade, or get value back, once you are in the last year of your contract
Now if they extend Sammy, he is absolutely tradable this year, but if you wait again until this time next year, he will not be...

I give our 'new' owners lots of credit for realizing that Rex wasn't going to lead us to 10 wins anytime soon, and making what looks like in HC SM a solid hire, and eventually moving on from DW
However the same owners deserves heeps of criticism for having made the Rex hire in the first place, for allowing him the freedom to let go of Schwartz, and thereby taking away the entire team's identity, for extending a GM's contract and then firing him too early in the contract, for allowing a DC who hasn't head coached a single game in the NFL final say in a college draft, of which he had very little experience, for implementing a mgmt system media and fans can't understand, for not properly explaining how that system works, and for a complete lack of management continuity
Here's the elephant in the room most fans don't want to admit or discuss, you can keep blaming a series of HC, GM's, Brandon, and other Bills executives for failing to create successful football in NY state, say poor Terry & Kim inherited a mess, just like DW and Rex did, but at some point, its all gonna point back to Terry & Kim, as it just did with Rex and DW, unless things change, and soon, and right now, the future isn't exactly bright, its seems uber-chaotic, and nothing points to winning 10 games this season, continual losing, a lack of continued success, eventually the fans will turn on the owners, because it will rightfully be all their fault, their hires, their moves, their lack of winning, etc
Or we will start winning and everyone will say they made the right moves......

I wonder who ever grades the graders
We love to post what other people think of these drafts but the past record of those grade givers is never evident

You can't help but like the good things DW bought to our Bills
A couple of more wins annually, relevancy, better drafts, saavy trades, and some gems in FA
However he left us without a top tier QB, only one legit NFL WR, no playoffs, and continuous cap issues
He had a nasty habit of continually trading up in drafts and trading away draft picks without success
Though other than my criticisms I have no idea why the Pegs decided to let him go
My best guess if they looked at the overall picture and thought the team should be more successful
And that DW's record didn't suggest he was the one that could make that happen
I'm sure he'll find other employment elsewhere, I wish him the best of luck
I'd like to think the change will be good for all parties involved including our Bills moving forward

I didn;t say I hated the picks or the draft but just I am critical of a 7-8 win team continually casting aside 3rd and 4th round draft picks
Actually the test is not if the player turns into a quality starter
The player has to turn into a quality starter plus what we didn't get in the 3rd round
Again under DW, which trade up has worked, examples please?
We will see if the new GM and or new Bills Mgmt team continues this practice....
I;m just saying the old practice so far didn't yield results

He's a guard, but the Bills did their homework as he has played some T in the past
Look I love the players we drafted this year
However I'm uber-catious
Every year on message boards folks claim we did well and claim that we found a plethora of plug in starters
However it never, or rarely, pans out as well as folks same it will
Some get injured, some have lousy rookie campaigns, some just never make the cut
Worse some of the payers that never make it, we traded up to get, losing other potential picks in the process
We will see

But I'd like you to name the recent player our Bills gave away 3rd and 4th draft picks to move up for that in the end was worth it?
I can't
Yet our Bills under DW, and various HC's, keep doing it, repeating, what IMO hasn't worked
I'm going to love seeing Jones and Dawkins in a Bills uni
But I'm really going to miss all those 3rd and 4th round draft picks who could have been starting at OLB, nickel, backup RB, etc
I just don't think a 7-8 win team should be continually moving up and casting aside valuable 3rd and 4th round picks

In recent memory, there are a bunch of fans on message boards, who insist every single year, a week after the draft, that all the new players we drafted are all superb, and will be incredible contributors to our Bills, lol
The reality is they have NEVER BEEN CORRECT!! - I'll let that sync in for a moment - So honestly, I think valid criticism is more likely to be the correct analysis than blind hope, as it's been warranted, driven by mediocre on field results
If that sounds negative, I apologize, I'm just trying to inject some reality about what you typically get out of an NFL draft, 2-3 players, thats it, and with regard to last years draft, so far less, again, I'm just tempering what I call typical message board over-exaggeration
And remember, every single draft trade up in recent times hasn't worked out, yet we are to suspend believe, and applaud having done just that twice yesterday? Don't get me wrong, I love the players, Zay and Dionne, I hope they become contributing starters, but it cost us other potential starting contributing players to acquire them, the same cost used to move up and grab Sammy, Ragland, and Graham, and others, not a single player that was so far worth the cost, or made this team in any way 'successful'
So I'm skeptical of the moves, more day 2 than day 1, which absolutely deserve criticism, because the folks who are making the moves, have no history as to having been successful doing them, yet they, and some fans, ask us to go all in, blindly supporting, as if every move they make is going to yield a 10 win team? Uh no.....
Criticize away, if you really feel we missed an opportunity to draft TT's backup and a franchise QB, that's a very legit concern, I disagree, but who is to say I'm more correct than you, don';t let the koolaiders drown you out - Make your point, I'm listening....

No you can't fill all your starting needs in one draft, but after the euphoria of finally moving down and acquiring extra draft picks, for the first time in years, it looked with all the extra picks we could find legit starters for all our holes
That was of course, B4 we had to move up, and give all of em away, again, same ole Bills, at least under this mgmt - look I hope it works out, but to date I still can't name a single player we moved up recently in a draft that was worth the picks we lost
Our LB situation is rather brutal in the wake of it all, but I am thrilled that we replaced Woods, Gilmore, and finally found a RT, but in regards to what we lost this off season, still not sure we have improved in any way this off season, it all seems like sideways moves, while the teams we pay went out and got better, time will tell...

I disagree that we have Sammy and a bunch of #3WR's
I would say we have Sammy and a bunch of #4 and #5 WR's
Hopefully tonight we add real upside #2 and #3 WR's
I love Zay, Goodwin, Kupp, and the hybrid Samuel
Fingers crossed
If we do add someone maybe folks might feel differently about our offensive direction moving forward
Though I feel the 2017 year in terms of wins will be all about the new D scheme and it responds
Without OLB upgrades tonight it also looks scary

It was long gone the moment our Bills hired Rex Ryan
He stripped the identity from within when he changed schemes
IMO the team identity is currently its offensive run game
Has been for a min 2 years
However someday a dominant front 4, or a lights out secondary, or a pass attack, or great LB coverage team, might resurface
Hard to say when
Except Coach SM knows a thing or two about the secondary, which is why it's being revamped, re-schemed
Hard to say if short term it'll be like Rex, made worse, or improved
It sure is different
Just not sure its addressing our biggest weakness
Our run D
Or maybe Ragland alone and another scheme change solves that
We will see

I think a quick look at what we have in terms of LB's and WR's, and the complete re-tolling of our secondary, plus a rookie HC, and it suggests we are not a playoff team in 2017, and that you are spot on about 2017 and 2018 rookies needing NFL adjustment time
Let's not forgot the potential of future injuries, remember our 2016 draft class hardly contributed, and we are presently one major WR, RB, and or QB injury away from tanking 2017
Though there is still lots of talent on this roster, to some degree our Bills have 2 extra high round draft picks held over from last year that are still basically rookies, and so nothing points that we are a 6 or worse win team either, so when you are a 8-9 win team, anything can happen, a couple of breaks, and you are a 10 win team, just as easily as a 7 win team, I wouldn't automatically write off this year and next, or say trading down negates winning 10 games plus
But I would also temper expectations, and look at our sections in the draft more about their long term 4 plus years potential then just what they offer this season in terms of need at any given position

Great Post Chuck Wagon, my criticism of the new mgmt team is not so much about letting Gilmore walk, trading down, and or selecting White, I actually like all 3 moves, and I think they are more financially prudent, with not that much of a talent drop-off
Its A, what our Bills did with the savings, they didn't go out and sign anybody really interesting this year in FA, didn't sign a single player in the top 250, and instead signed a bunch of depth role players, maybe excepting Hyde and Dimarco, that negated getting valuable draft compensation for losing Gilmore
If the plan is to acquire more draft picks, stop trading up, and trading them away, wonderful, but then we could really us that free 3rd and or 4th round comp picks next year on top of the extra first, do get proper compensation for having lost Gilmore, Woods, and Brown
I just don't think much of what we signed in FA, it certainly doe snot point to winning 10 games this year, alas, I hope we do better in the draft, but then I remind folks, all the other teams greatly improve as well, we still have to improve more than them, to win those 10 games plus....

No matter how many times our owner, GM, and HC tell the fans and the media that they have a unique structure whereby they make group decisions folks have to make up their own experts narrative how it works, lol
Again, all their off season moves are made together, the trades, the draft selections, the cuts, and the signings, but if you still feel the need to attribute each move to someone, feel free, but then you have a misunderstanding how they actually work, just saying...
But yes if at some point our owner feels there would be a better partnership by replacing someone on the team he will do so, but remember that new person will have to work with the Pegs structure, in terms of a new GM, that will greatly restrict interest...

Walter Football say's Ju Ju WR in the 2nd, David Sharpe T in the 3rd, Cameron Sutton DB in the 3rd
I love the first two, but not so crazy about another DB considering our LB situation
I like Carole Phillps OLB instead of Sutton
And Cunningham in the 2nd, and Goodwin, Johnson is just as good
I just don't think Cunningham falls to us

Only the Bills would draft for a position where there are no starting slots with a backup already in place from last year already drafted in the 3rd round, lol
Sorry, I got a better idea
We still don't have a starting WR, RT, or OLB
The last thing we need is a 4th depth DT
Next year, absolutely its time to find Kyle's replacement

I don't think 6-9 win teams should ever be trading up period for anybody unless its for a QB
So IMO trading up for Sammy, Ragland, everyone else, was a bad idea
This time they got it right
I easily take the 3rd-5th best CB and all the picks over the best one
Even the savings in cap hit, bonus, and 4 years salary benefits our Bills, short term, by trading down
But that's just my opinion...

Our Bills have up 171 basis draft points to do the deal so in fact using the traditional point system KC came out ahead
However 171 is not alot of points but it is another draft pick we did not get
Still I like the idea of the trade down
Much better than giving away draft picks for players that don't achieve the value of the picks
So I'll take all the extra picks
Just wish we had even more in 2018
By having not signed marginal FA's

I disliked the Rex hire from day one, but anytime I criticized him on the BBMB I was drowned out
I have the complete opposite opinion on HC Sean
I think he is going to turn out to an excellent NFL HC
However I'm not as equally convinced he is good scout, a good GM, and or can make good trades
Knows how the comp rule works, understands the cap, and or will make the right off season personal moves
I think he has already made mistakes with regard to having given up 2 free comp picks next year
And I am not convinced the safeties he signed, for IMO too much money, will be effective NFL starters
I also think he got taken a bit in 2 of the 3 draft trades
And IMO we are razor thin talent wise at OLB and WR
And the changes with our offensive run blocking scheme frighten me
Though I applaud the Sammy move, the TT and contractural cap changes, and I like the totality of our draft selections
So the jury is out as to if we just survived the 2017 off season or we are in better position to win 10 games
But I am less concerned about his personality traits, more concerned about his actual moves as our rookie HC/rookie GM
