1. it's  the whole Bledsoe/Moulds "we have to put this team on our backs" attitude. Drew is obsessed with looking for Moulds. You know he's doubled, you know your opponent is going to blitz you, .....gee, maybe that might be a good indicator that Evans is seeing 1 on 1 coverage. I got an idea: How about an offensive pass play that looks at Evans FIRST. Drew, you can look Mould's way to keep them honest, but go to your speed guy sometimes. Make them pay. Is this not why they picked him 13 overall????????? Hint: the answer isn't "no".

I think it's more that they wanted to ease the rookie into the lineup, and then realized that the style of offense they want to run needs a deep threat.

It's a mistake, no doubt, but the mistake is that the coaching staff failed to realize early enough that this guys is ready to contribute now.

  2. The truth of this probably lies between the Bills being an A-1 defense and them being a sucky bunch of chokers.

They're not an A1 defense, because an A-1 defense slams the door in the situations you mention.

At the same time, they have held the score down in 3 of the 4 games they played. If you can team them with an offense that scores 20-24 pts a game, the defense will help lead the team to a winning record.

The Bills style of offense and defense don't mesh that well right now. You can make both points that if the D shut down the opponent in the 4th quarter, the Bills would be 3-1 AND if the Bill could score 20 points a game, they'd be 3-1.

  3. I guess a positive I would add is that teams are going to have to start respecting Evans deep when he's on the field, and that should move the opposing defense back, which will help the running game.

Of course, Evans has to be on the field for that to happen.

  4. The real question is, though, is are teams starting to view Evans as a threat? Can they send extra guys when he's on the field?

He's caught three bombs in his last three games, two for TDs. How many more does he have to catch before opposing DCs realize that they have to throttle back the blitz and drop the safeties when he's on the field?

And when will Mularkey realize this and keep him on the field as much as possible?

In a pretty dismal season, this is something that seems to be working. Donohoe drafted Evans as a deep threat, and he is one, and it could pay dividends if the coaches play it the right way.

  5. he has caught every one....maybe we should do it more??????....is this rocket science or what...the guy is a PLAYER god damnit...lets use him EARLY instead of at the end of the game when we have to! Am I alone thinking this???? !@#$!!!!!!!

    65385

You're completely right. This guy gets open deep with ease. Throw three or four times to him in the 1st quarter, and watch the defense ease off the line of scrimmage.

Man, I really hope Mularkey is just going through some growning pains right now. He needs to get things like this nailed down by mid season to prove he can hang with real NFL coaches.

  6. Nice you said that Frez.  Here is a known true stat on our friend Tom.

When in Pittsburgh, this guy let FA's go like they were running water.  Never signed anyone and didnt keep that Pittsburgh team together that went to the Super Bowl.  Everyone was quick to place blame on the Rooney's for this.  Take a long look at that team now.  We take their OC and make him a coach, plus take a couple others from them.  Their O is much better than ours!  They have drafted way better than Buffalo for the past 4 years and also have kept their FA.  Oh, did I mention their record?????

I just wish the front office of this team would make some wise choices...

    65332

Yeah, and the Steelers also got the state to build them a brand new stadium. You think increase stadium revenues had anything to do with their change of heart about signing FAs?

By the way, Donahoe has signed way more FAs with the Bills than he did with the Steelers, mainly because his owner has let him.

There's a lot of reasons to criticize Donahoe about right now, but this isn't one of them.

  7. I think the key quotes after the game came from the Jets:"That (stopping Henry) was our main goal," Jets nose tackle Jason Ferguson said. Said LB Victor Hobson: "That was definitely a focus. We felt if we stopped the run, we would be in a great position to win."

We felt if we stopped the run, we would be in a great position to win. TRANSLATION : Bledsoe is no threat to beat us.

OK give him credit for the two scores late in the game, but the Bills still lost.

The sooner Bledsoe hits the bench, the sooner the Bills fans can look forward

    to a brighter future.

    65320

"Run and Stop the Run" -- Marv Levy, ad nauseam, 1986-1996.

Doesn't matter who the opponent is, or who their QB is, this is the goal of all NFL teams.

And the fact is, without a running game, despite an overall mediocre performance, Bledsoe had the Bills ahead with 2 minutes left in the game.

If they didn't respect him before the game, they sure as hell do now. Bledsoe still has the ability to beat a team with a couple of throws.

  8. Stop saying that JP shouldn't play because "he's just a rookie".

    64960

How about saying that JP is a rookie who has missed 10 weeks of practice and hasn't thrown a pass in a game situation (preseason) since mid-August?

I can't wait to watch the guy play either, but rusty and inexperienced isn't a good combination in the NFL. You might be able to get by by being one or the other, but not both at the same time.

  9. I see Losman as a better QB than Rothlisberger.  Losman has great mobility and can do a lot more bootlegging roll-outs etc.  The D has to respect his mobility a lot more, can get burned by the blitz if Losman esxapes.  The OL is not that bad as everyone says.  Jennings got beat three times yesterday, but the rest of the line did okay.  The majority of sacks Bledsoe takes are from blitzes that are not picked up by backs or beat the TE not the OL.  You can't expect the OL to block 7 when there is only 5 of them!  Watch when Losman plays how the line becomes so much better like when Flutie replaced Johnson.

    65010

I don't want to disrespect Losman here, because I really do believe the guy is the answer at QB for the Bills immediate future.

But, don't you think that Losman's missing practice for 9 or 10 weeks at the beginning of his rookie year sets him back?

I think he'll be ready to start next year, but his being rusty and inexperienced doesn't bode well for helping much this year.

  10. Once again, read the original post. Did I say anything about dumping the Bills? Oh well. Flame away ladies. I guess it will take the heat of the fact that the Bills are 0-4 for a couple of hours.

    Coach=RJ.

    Coach is a commie bastard.

:I starred in Brokeback Mountain: Coach.

I am better fan than you Coach.

    64979

I watch other teams play, but unless it's the Bills (always root for), the Pats or Dolphins (always root against), I watch as an interested, independent observer.

I have no problem discussing the strengths and weaknesses of other teams, and calling out good players from other teams, but I would never "adopt" another team.

To me, adopting another team, like the Colts, means you would choose to watch the Colts over the Bills because they have a better record. That's something I'd never do.

  11. I don't know if Losman is ready to start this season or not, after missing weeks of practice time with his injury, but from what I did see of him in preseason, he is well worth next year's first round pick.

And, to me, McGahee outplayed Henry yesterday. I think the offense could improve if he got more carries and playing time. I'm not saying that he'll save the season, but I do think he could make things better.

  12. Now it's defending champion New England 24, Buffalo 17 with 3:24 remaining and Buffalo faces third-and-2 on the Patriots 16, a sellout home crowd roaring at military-afterburner decibels. Yet the Buffalo offensive line is pushed backward just like the game before, loss of yardage for the runner.

Actually, the line opened a good-sized hole on the right side, but Henry tripped.

But that doesn't fit his storyline, so why bother with the facts?

  13. I have been impressed with everything TD has done for the Bills AT THE TIME that it happened EXCEPT:

    1. Selecting GW as HC (too unknown)

    2. Trading the #1 for Drew (happy we upgraded from AVP, but a #1 was too high).

    3. Selecting MM as HC (I wanted Coughlin... jury's still out on MM)

    4. Re-signing Bledsoe (big mistake)

    55651

I would add re-signing Shoebel. This guy is proving that he is not a difference maker, and TD should have let him whither on the vine during the season.

He'll end up with 10 sacks, against 4 teams, though and everyone will say that he's a rising star.

  14. what could have been if Wire doesn't go offsides on the FG attempt.

what could have been if the referees called Dillon's fumble a fumble.

what could have been if Henry stays on his feet.

what could have been if the referees called Henry's Touchdown in Oak.

what could have been if Villarial doens't hold against the Jags.

what could have been if Clements knocks down the pass.

what could have been if Bledsoe had blockers actually blocking for him.

what could have been if this coaching staff could game plan against blitzing linebackers.

This is a decent team with fatal flaws, no blocking ability and the unexcusable habit of beating themselves. It's a shame, but you get what you deserve when you still do not learn how not to make mistakes in crunchtime (I do however think that the NFL's crap referees have sufficiently helped push us off the edge). Any Bills fan laying blame on Bledsoe for this one are morons plain and simple. I don't know what else to say about a team that shoots itself in the foot enough to take them out of a season that is only 3 games young. I'm still rooting for the Bills, and I hope everybody in this organization gets a brain transplant before the Jets game. Go Bills.

    55622

In the mid 80's the Bills had back to back 2 and 14 seasons due to "what could have been."

The Bills record during Kelly's first season was 4-12, thanks to "what could have been."

You consider these things as a cause of the Bills poor play, but they are actually the result of poor play.

It would be a hell of a lot easier to turn the season around if it were only Bledsoe's fault.
