    Exactly!

As a football fan I never would have noticed if Aaron Hernandez or other 2% players weren't ever in the league. If you have a criminal record your out. Plain & Simple

Everyone deserves a second chance. This is all the Pats fault, if they never gave him that extension he would have been still playing under his rookie contract and we would never really be talking about him or his money.

I believe in second chances, what if Da'Rick turns out to be good for us?

I'm sorry, I'm just going to say it: you're kind of an idiot.

Well at least he used the correct you're.

When you don't have a QB playing you believe in your defense just doesn't play as hard. Especially true when your QB is Fitz and he just gives games away or can't get a first down.

The defense is the least of my worries this year.

Boot up some of the games from last year. Against Cleveland, watch his play during Richardson's TD run. The 1st New England game; a true Jekyl and Hyde game for him. The SF game was a complete debacle for him as well as the entire D; he was fooled on a couple of occasions and his lack of speed was evident on a few long passes as well.

While I appreciate the give and take, I've grown tired of it in this thread. I'll just say I feel my critique of his play since he's come into the league is fair. Would he be better served by a better supporting cast? Of course. But that doesn't mean he isn't responsible for his own share of bad plays and poor decisions all on his own. And nobody has any business comparing him to Ed Reed at ANY stage of their careers.

    GO BILLS!!!

OMG how come you aren't working for the NFL.

  4. My expectation is 4-6 wins. My hope is for much more. :)

You clearly didn't watch the games last year then. We didn't have a huge issue with our offense. Sure we turned it over more than people would like, but some of that was Fitz forcing the issue after the defense gave up a big lead. We had a terrible defense, and an average(+) offense. If we had an average defense last year, there's a good chance we would have finished with 9 wins.

Lol I know you didn't watch the games with that response. Fitz probably has more game ending turnovers then some of the QBs that have played longer.

Oh, I was just lacking the "context." I see. So you really weren't suggesting Byrd is as good as Reed at the same career stage when you trotted out your statistical comparison. Right.

I was using it to show Byrd wasn't as bad as MitchmurrayDT was trying to say he was. Right :)

    GO BILLS!!!

They played a cover two the majority of the time they were in zone coverage. Standard practice. You're right about cover-3, cover-1, and even some quarters thrown in as well. But most of the time, it was cover-2 with Wilson screwing the pooch most often.

My argument isn't with your extrapolations. It's with pff's analysis. If they are only counting the 21 targets as those times when Byrd was in man coverage, then it only confirms my suspicions about their process. It is done without enough context. And it certainly doesn't take into account the times Byrd was late in getting over or slow in recognition or just plain got outrun by a receiver. He was victimized at times last season as he has been since he came into the league. Doesn't make him a bad player by any stretch, just limited. And certainly not worthy of comparisons to Ed Reed. They are two different kinds of talent entirely.

    GO BILLS!!!

Next time you want to use statistics in a post to validate your position and you DON'T want anybody else to "butt in", perhaps you should qualify that up front.

Your comparison of Byrd to Reed is just not fair to Byrd. You'd know that if you actually watched more of Ed Reed over the years.

    It's that obvious.

    GO BILLS!!!

Shouldn't have to, especially when you were the guy who didn't read the other pages. Also was fun to play with you.

  7.

No disrespect here either, but you can't be thinking I extrapolated those 21 targets to encompass his entire "side" of the field, right? That's preposterous, and I wouldn't make such a claim.

Obviously that's when he had primary coverage in either a man to man matchup or the target was in his "zone." I know stats don't tell the whole story, but a 50% rate of success is much higher than that of elite corners who only succeed about a third of the time. I would certainly discount the stats since George Wilson also fared well, and the Bills D was constantly run all over, eliminating the need for deeper passing.

But I wouldn't want to use stats to try to compare players anyway, since like you, I prefer the eyeball test. But those stats, albeit a small sampling, back up what I'm saying: 1. Byrd is rarely thrown at (which I attribute to QBs recognizing the danger of doing so) and 2. When balls are thrown his way, there is a great chance that Byrd will make a big play.

Also, I disagree that they played two-deep the majority of the time. I saw a lot of cover 3 and cover 1. Byrd was the "center fielder" with the SS playing in the box or the flats most of the time.

I do agree it isn't really fair to compare Reed to Byrd, but I just wanted to point out that many here (not you, of course) consider Byrd ordinary and easily replaceable, when I think it's clear opposing QBs and coaches disagree. But what the hell do I know? I'm just a fan.

Good to know some people here have their head on right. Good post.

The best part of all this is I was never talking to K-9, he quoted me. I was talking to Mitchmurraydowntown b.c he thinks Byrd is an average player that can be replaced by anyone without notice. K-9 decided to butt in so I played along.

“My guess I’m not just going to go in there all the way,” Chandler told Buffalobills.com of his participation in camp practices. ”I’m just worried about getting my lungs in shape and my legs. That’s what this next month and a half is for. It’s not vacation. It’s nothing like that. I’m going to be working just as hard as I have been and I’m going to be ready to go.”[/Quote]

He's a month ahead of schedule. This is something we can all be happy about. I know I feel much better knowing we will have Chandler out there.

Strongly opinionated? Borderline insulting? Because I think Byrd isn't as athletic as Ed Reed? Because I don't think he's in the same class as a 1st ballot HOFer and one of the best to ever play the position? What can I say? If you are under that delusion, then by all means, enjoy the fantasy. I'd rather save my breath for people who have a better understanding of the game.

    GO BILLS!!!

I think we can all agree Byrd is a great talent. We can all agree that he's played with less than stellar talent around him. We can all agree that he needs to be re-signed because he makes our team better.

But I'm not gonna elevate him to Ed Reed class because someone points out he had nearly as many INTs or forced and recovered more fumbles than Ed Reed after his first five years. Byrd simply doesn't possess the speed and quickness to impact the game on a play by play basis like Reed. That's not an insult to Byrd. Some people just need to take it that way.

    GO BILLS!!!

It's you living in the fantasy. You have yet to provide anything of substance other then what you "think"

But this is how forums are people come here and take opinion and use it as fact all while screaming others are wrong.

No one bothers to look at the help Ed had on the team the players he had around him, the support system on the defense. Byrd on the other hand was playing with no one around him. He was asked to work with different DC every year. Yet he did everything he was asked even on a defense that was almost historically horrible around him. Not to mention his consistency of not missing a single game which is huge in the NFL.

  10.

Wrong. I wasn't the one to suggest that because Byrd has favorable comparative stats to Reed at the same stages of their careers, that Byrd is somehow in the same class as Reed as a player. That is just plain ignorance of the game.

And even at his advanced age, I still believe Ed Reed impacts the game more on a play by play basis.

    GO BILLS!!!

Byrd has done just as good with less talent around him. You are just being very strongly opinionated borderline insulting right now.

  11.

The idiocy of this post aside, Byrd just doesn't have the superior athletic physical skills of an Ed Reed.

Like I said, compare stats all you want. That's for folks that lack insight. It's how players effect the game play in and play out, not just when they are getting turnovers. Turnovers are the exception, not the rule. Being in the right spots to impact plays on a play to play basis is the name of the game. Byrd just isn't fast or quick enough to do that on the same HOF level as an Ed Reed.

    GO BILLS!!!

Your problem is you are comparing the Ed Reed of now. It's a mistake many make.

I wrote a response and then deleted it.

I can get how someone would disagree with me. I specifically started my opinion by acknowledging that I am in the minority. The response has been several outright personal attacks... kind of a shame.

This place used to be more of a community, where people could disagree with each other without getting emotionally dug in. Every once in awhile someone would actually change their mind - I know I have, many times.

Now most of the time it's just people blindly shouting at each other and drowning out all dissent, like sports talk radio. Maybe it's indicative of society. But it's no coincidence that a lot of informed and engaged posters have disappeared over the years, including the guy who wrote the article that sparked this thread. I was in the camp that thought he overreacted, but after reading through this thread I understand why he left.

This post had everything, made me laugh, made me cry, and made me not order Pizza today. Gonna grill some burgers now.
