Totally agree. We're not going to come up with a super star in free agency this year and need another placeholder until next year's fine crop of free agents becomes available or we develop a young quarterback. Who knows why McCown numbers dropped so precipitously last season. It may not have been totally on him. All it takes is a seivish offensive line, a bunch of clueless or inept receivers, or some nicks. He was very good two seasons ago, as noted.
watch his game tape in Chicago. he was the product of a good team with arguably the best receivers in the league at his disposal. he would literally throw the ball up for grabs and the receivers would make the plays. he has 11 years of bad stats and 1 year of good stats. and it's much different when you are the guy and all of the pressure is on you. he had no pressure in Chicago. nobody expected anything from him so he just went out there and threw the ball up in the air and whatever happens happens. with Tampa and now with the Bills everyone is going to expect him to be that veteran guy that we need but that's not him. he is just a backup QB and that's all he will ever be.
if we are signing him as a backup then fine. but unfortunately we are signing him as the "top free agent QB in the NFL" and he is definitely not that!

What in the world are you taking about? EJ was drafted in 2013. And the only time a vet lost the battle with EJ was thanks to a slippery mat.
EJ had never faced real competition in camp, and even if McCown is the only new QB (highly doubtful) added to camp, then the Bills are better than they are now.
Frankly, I don't know why I bother responding as you think Vick and Geno are better options.
Obviously I meant 2013 and 2014. Typo.
And it's a fact that Michael Vick is better than Josh McCown (are you really even arguing this because that's laughable) and it's a fact that Geno and EJ are pretty much neck and neck at this point in their careers. Rex is no better off with McCown and EJ than he was with Vick and Geno. It's a fact

Well if you dont think its possible the Bills will bring in another QB, then exactly what "more" were you expecting? A better FA? Who???
things haven't played out yet. the big things will happen closer to the draft. maybe i was expecting too much but i was definitely holding out hope that we could swing some kind of trade for a guy like Bradford or Foles. Mariota might fall and the Eagles might freak out and trade their entire team for him and Foles could have come on the cheap. who knows, crazier things have happened. in terms of FA guys, I like Sanchez and Hoyer and maybe even Locker over McCown. all of those guys have been "the guy" in the past. McCown was the guy last year in Tampa and we know what a trainwreck that was.
Josh McCown is a good backup QB but unfortunately QB desperate teams have inflated his status to that of a starter for some reason. he's no starter. and if the Bills are going to go into the regular season with EJ, McCown, and Tuel then we are screwed. I was just expecting more out of this coaching staff

BS
Nothing says the Bills are done making moves at QB since it's only February.
And I'd like to know exactly what "more" you are expecting considering the viable options out there. Seriously.
Exactly. If they are "afraid" of competing with Josh McCown, then we dont need them around anyways. But no NFL QB is thinking that.
so you think we are going to sign more than 1 veteran FA QB this year and give them both $5 mil or more this season? won't happen. if they get McCown then that is their veteran guy and then the only other move to make would be to draft someone
-
why would they be worried about competing with mccown? You do realize most teams have more than 1 QB on the team. None of the FA QBs are good enough to be crowned the starter on any team that signs them.
If he's as bad as you say, why would they be so worried about competing with him?
NFL QB's have egos. They will look at this and say Bills got McCown so he's their guy. I want to go to someone who doesn't have a veteran guy like Houston or Tenn. That's why you never see teams get more than one highly sought after veteran FA QB's in one year
-
You expected more, in the middle of February?
i expected nothing in Feb. signing McCown now ties us to him and we miss out on other veteran guys next month not wanting to have to compete with McCown so they end up signing elsewhere
IT'S FEBRUARY
Some of you people, I swear...

the negativity comes from us already watching this play out in 2012 and 2013. bring in FA QB, give him a lot of guaranteed money, watch EJ beat him out because FA QB sucks, watch EJ suck, insert sucky FA QB, sucky FA QB sucks and leaves town with a lot of guaranteed money and we are back in the same situation again next offseason.
I think we all just expected more. we are all feeling good about ourselves after getting this new coaching staff but we aren't going to the playoffs with Josh McCown and if we do it will be 1 and done so what's the point? our team is set up to win now. not eek by and hope to just make the wildcard playoffs. isn't the goal to win the Super Bowl? if it is then do whatever it takes to get a real QB. everyone has their price, be creative, make it happen
-
man, Rex is a good coach but he just can't catch a break. i prefer Vick and Geno over McCown and EJ. i just thought he would have a plan this time around. if his plan truly is it doesn't matter if you have a crap QB as long as you have a good defense and good running attack then he's going to be in for a surprise when the Pats score 30 on us like they do every year and we can't put up more than 1 or 2 TD's a game. this is sad. i was riding high this offseason thinking we were heading in the right direction but this move just took the wind out of my sails
-
he isn't a "top FA QB" just because some national nfl reporter with probably the same agent says he is. He's the "top" available QB.
well i'm sure that's how they are pitching it. he's the top FA QB and will demand top FA QB money. looks like we will find out today. I'm guessing at least 2 years $10+ mil and half of that guaranteed
-
If they sign him... It doesn't mean 1) he's our starting QB 2) they won't sign anyone else 3) he will make the team.
He could replace Tuel or we could bring 4 QBs to camp. Not sure it's worth being depressed about. It's early Feb, I doubt it will be the last QB they sign. He's just the "best" one available today.
because apparently this is the "top FA QB" so he's going to demand some guaranteed money so the team will be committed to him. probably something similar to the Orton deal where they give him a lot of money planning on him being there for 2 years. meanwhile, he's 35 yrs old. all signs point to them just getting a veteran guy that can teach EJ but they expect EJ to be the starter. this is what they have done with EJ the last 3 years. why not give him some real deal competition and see if he can beat them out? quit babying him imo
Why would hoyer and sanchez be ok ? Hoyer has a baby arm and sanchez well he's sanchez. Sanchito almost fooled us last year w great play but couldnt keep the turnovers away as always.
because I like their games better than McCown who has been a career backup his entire NFL career. i would have also been ok with Jake Locker because he's athletic and can do some things out of the pocket, which is what Roman did with Kapernick in SF
-
I could have been OK with Sanchez or Hoyer. Not 35 yr old career backup Josh McCown. We need competition for EJ. Not hand him the job which is what this move basically does.
-
I'm looking up his stats. I knew he was bad but not this bad. 56% completion percentage last year. 14 ints in 11 games played. This is super depressing.

I honestly would pass, no pun intended.
Pass gas? Yea nobody wants arguably the best regular season qb in the history of football
-
Jerry Rice? He's pretty good
-
I don't know what is more bizarre. That people watch that show or that people find her attractive. Shes a mess nowIt would be like if Kelly Cuoco left The Big Bang Theory. Who would watch the show?

Way to go out on a limb there
Way to sound like a jerk for no reason

I think the days of paying big bucks for RB's is over. You can get a good young RB in the mid rounds of the draft then dump him when his rookie deal runs out. There's plenty of good cheap options in FA as well
-
La fans would go nuts, including me.
I prefer Peyton in Buffalo, but La rams centered by Peyton would be a close 2nd.
then we get Bradford as the consolation prize
-
The Colts are interested in Dareus and we are interested in Luck. Make it happen
-
Im sure you also used that as a "pro" for us pre-pegs
we have much better fans and more history than St. Louis. they took the team from LA and now they are giving it back. different situation than us
-
think he wants to face the SF, seattle, and arizona defenses 6 times next year?
or if he wants a 2 year deal face the prospect of being the face of the franchise leaving town after 2015 possibly?
not the face of leaving town...the face of the incoming Los Angeles Rams. how nuts would LA go if they had Peyton Manning coming to town
-
I think he would pick St Louis over us. Good D and it's in a dome (for now)
-
Waiting for Leroi to post "just got a text from Doug Whaley, Manning to Buffalo is a done deal"
Josh McCown anybody? Update: Is a Brown...end of story.

backup in terms of money and expectations
I'm not saying it, everyone else is. That's why it's in quotes. I think he sucks
