You're out of your mind with delusion if you believe Notre Dame could hang with the likes of Oregon, Stanford, Georgia, A&M, and South Carolina.
All those teams would run the Irish right out of the stadium. But you keep on believing the Pretenders of South Bend are relevant beyond the media that desperately wants them to be so.

They were undefeated and @oklahoma wasn't a military academy? @usc should've been bigger. They didn't play many big games but they won them all.
I do agree but those same people that had ND #1, they would tell you that Bama or Oregon would be big favorites in a head to head matchup (and we saw why last night). I don't think we should dissuade college teams from playing good competition knowing 1 loss and you are out of it (Oregon) even though you were better than the other team playing for the title. I don't think that's fair. #Playoffs!

So now Alabama plays Oregon for the national title right? When is that game?
Seriously though, why was ND voted #1 if it was pretty widely accepted that they weren't at the level of these schools? Beating on the military academies isn't the same as running the gauntlet of SEC or PAC-10 schools. Looking forward to a college football playoff system!

If we are set on taking a QB I might even suggest trading back in the draft. There should be plenty of QB's available at the end of the 1st and beginning of the 2nd. Trade our first for another team's first and their second and their first next year! I don't think a lot of team's will be looking to trade up this year though but worth a shot

I'm not sold on any of the coaches except maybe the OL coach, but Marrone was an OL coach so I don't think we would be missing out on much if we cleaned house. They are just doing this to save money since the staff is under contract for next season and they are paying them anyhow. If we are truly looking to go in a different direction and the bottom line isn't an issue then let's just get rid of them all

Listened to the presser. Still not excited. Let's see what OC and DC they can land. They better be right.

There is also the chance that he knows who his coordinators are going to be, or is negotiating with them right now, and doesn't feel the need to involve us in the selection process. Which is as it should be.
Was just hoping to hear we have a plan in place for bringing in some big time coordinators rather than "I don't know, I value coaches at all levels...high school, division 3 college, I think for coordinator we want someone with some NFL experience...yea"
Just voicing a concern of mine. No need for everyone to attack. We'll just have to wait and see. Thanks

I'm a little discouraged to hear that it sounds like they have no idea who the DC and other coaches will be. Isn't that something they should have been working on in the back channels for a couple of days now? It sounds like they just said let's sign this HC and figure the rest out later. Picking the right DC is going to be HUGE in this process

I'm not optimistic but the guy deserves a chance. He is what we have, and its up to him to show what he can do with the draft coming on, with free agency, and with keeping existing quality players, and then he has to turn them into something respectable on the field. This time we should give him a timeline and some expectations instead of just floundering around for four or five years.
Agreed. Nothing we can do about it now. It's done. As for a timeline, I think I wouldn't expect anything less than 5-6 wins this year given our talent level and then improving every year beyond that. If we aren't a playoff team by his 3rd year then we clean house and are back to square one IMO. Same way we have done it for the past 13 yrs

Lots of drops in this game. He definitely throws a nice ball. He threw some good deep balls too. Haven't seen those from the Bills in a few years! I wouldn't be upset if we got him with our 2nd pick but I'm guessing we would have to trade back into the end of the first to get him. Not a lot of good qb's in this draft so a lot of teams that need one will be reaching

Kelly is a waffler. Did it last year, too. I liked how Philly floated the idea that they were going to cancel their interview and move on after Kelly sat with Cleveland for 7 hours and had everyone convinced that's where he was going.
Not sure if it means that he'll never get another NFL interview. I kind of doubt that. But it's safe to say he'll never get another one with Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Buffalo, or Philly. And he's done nothing to help his credibility with the other 28 teams. It's a small community with little room for bad reputations.

He will definitely get more opportunities but I think they will happen behind the scenes. Cleveland and Philly are looking really bad right about now. Thank god we aren't them. Our fans would be going nuts I think!

I think the Bills caught wind of what Chip was doing and this led to them pulling the trigger on Marrone before Cleveland/Philly/SD could get to him. The Bills certainly acted with a sense of urgency and I think that is why. I hadn't even heard that Marrone was being seriously considered and then BAM at 5:30 am I see the Schefter tweet that he is our coach. Crazy weekend for sure!

Honestly, just for fun, what do you think the record of Chip Kelly would have been had he taken over the Syracuse HC job the exact same way that Marrone did, keeping in mind that he wouldn't have hardly any of his own guys in year 1 after being hired on December 11, only true freshmen in year two, and the first year he would have had mostly his own guys was last year.
Personally, if he were able to get that team to 30-20 in four years would be very, very hard to believe, and he probably would be pretty close to 25-25. Sure, it's impossible to know to if you had to guess, what would you say and why? And remember, Kelly was OC for a couple years at Oregon before taking over, and they were a top 10 NCAA team before he got there as HC.
It doesn't take much in college ball to turn a program around. Look at Brian Kelly at both Cinci and then ND this year and look at pretty much every program Nick Saban has gone to. Look at Urban Meyers and what he is doing this year at Ohio State. I think it's proven over and over again that this is very doable at the college level and many other coaches have had better success than what Marrone has shown IMO

Secondly, why couldn't we look into Lovie Smith as our DC? If Cleveland and AZ both pass on him, he can either be a coordinator or go to the college game. Why not go to Buffalo who runs a 43 and has some talent in place (at least on paper).
Don't forget about San Diego, which is a much more attractive job than either and they want him bad

Ever heard of saving face? It became pretty clear pretty fast that Chip was going to Philly or staying at Oregon. He cancelled his meeting with the Browns to continue talking with Philly. Read between the lines. Nobody in their right mind would look at Marrone and Kelly and be like gee I wonder who we should pick hmm

I don't think you need your HC to be a Offensive or Defensive genius. Your HC should be able to develop the team in all three phases. He should be able to motivate the team and bring a sense of direction. In fact, I would prefer that our HC not call any plays and focus on the game as a whole.
I would agree, if he has the top OC and DC in the league then he will win games. Problem is, this guy has no credibility and he won't be able to get the top OC and DC out there to join his staff. At least with Lovie we would be guaranteed to have a top defense

typical for the top qb with nothing to prove. i bet he will want to do his own pro day for all of the scouts so that he can use his own receivers and have it all scripted out. i think a lot of the top guys have done the same thing over the years
