  1. He already thought he hired that guy.

You trust him to do it again?

Sorry but he's out of his element in this organization. Doing a good job with the marketing side of things warrants a promotion to team president in charge of hiring the GM and the coach?

Remember he left no stone unturned.

All that being said I still think the bigger problem is Marrones hiring of Pat Morris and Hackett...who'd struggle as a high school OC.

No, I don't trust him...I was really just being facetious. I just want him to step down, or be demoted...the fish rots from the head down.

  2. Dear Russ Brandon,

You have been in the Bills organization since 1996. Since that time, you have gone from marketing guru to President. As I'm sure you are well aware, we haven't made the playoffs since 1999. On behalf of the Bills fanbase, please hire a staff that can use innovation in the new NFL. Over the past 15 years, we have lost with the same boring conservative decisions. This year, we have a defense that is playoff worthy, however our offense/coaching has been subpar. This is unfair to the guys that pour their hearts out on that defense. You must feel for Kyle Williams, who has been here for most of this pathetic ride.

If you don't feel that a change in coach is necessary, please go back and watch Marrone's opening press conference. He stated that we would be innovative...where is the innovation?? If that doesn't change your mind, then maybe it's time for you to take a step back. You can not accept the play not to lose philosophy, you must embrace the play to win mantra. You can't be conservative when you don't have a top level qb. For sure, you must know this. If any of this is a revelation, than it may be time for you to move one.

Thank you for your time with the organization.

    Sincerely,

    Bills Fans

  3. Where did I say that? The Ravens just won the SB because QB Joe Flacco pretty played lights out thru the playoffs, and SB.

I was merely pointing out one particular game that stood out to me with one team absolutely dominating the other with the running game. The QB had a horrid game and it didn't matter.

The Bills lost one of their top O linemen in LG Andy Levitre and he was the ONLY player not to miss time due to injuries the last 4 years. I don't see how a player like that can "easily be replaced".

I did say "IF', because I did not see you state that....and i'm not implying that Andy was a bad or even avg player, but what I am saying is that it is easier to find a good replacement at G than say a T, or obviously a QB.

BTW, according to some metrics at PFF (don't have time to find link at the moment), Levitre was a very good pass blocker and slightly above avg run blocker.

  4. The Ravens didn't just win by running as they have also have a top defense. The point was the Ravens didn't need top QB play in that game and they found another way to dominate it, as they did it with both defense and running. The defense ranked #3 in both yards, pts in 2009

The same game plan isn't going to work every game after game. Yea Bilichick has proven he adapts better then most. Just look at the 4-1-6 defense they won SB 25 with, but his teams don't always win the SB every year.

Instead of building a power running team like the Ravens have to compete against the Patriots. The Buffalo Bills try and build a high power offensive passing game with a lame backup QB as the starter. That make sense to you?

if you believe that you don't need top QB play to succeed in today's NFL, then I'm afraid the game has passed you by. And while there is some merit to the point that you need to be creative in game plan, you can't use a statistical outlier to prove a point.

Maybe a little off topic, but after reading this post it occurred to me that this shows an example of how there is a divide among fans in the traditional theories off old school football vs the new wave of stats based theories. I find the discussions fascinating.

To return back to the OP's question, there def are some questions heading into training camp about the O-Line. At this point though, I wouldn't be overly concerned about how that unit will perform. A LG can easily be replaced, and OL can be one of the biggest benefactors of 'coaching up'.

  5.

Yeah Mario Williams still seems somewhat perplexed talking about the new defense…. just as he did 2 weeks ago.

    That's a bit disturbing.

Maybe it's just a hard defense to describe. That's what I'm hoping.

I think that the team has been given a 'gag order' when it comes to explaining scheme. Every time I hear an interview, it's filled with vague clichés and awkward pauses. Dareus was on 1270 yest and couldn't really say much about the d when asked either.

  6. Almost every QB prospect ever drafted has holes in their game that need to be either corrected or coached up. Luck and RGIII aside, there are no can't miss prospects at the position. Geno's the best guy this year, so I'm all for going to get him because I also don't think he will be there at 8.

Also wanted to post this article from today:

    http://www.optimumscouting.com/scout-s-notes/articles/2013-nfl-draft-geno-smith-atop-quarterback-rankings-hoping-to-follow-in-matt-ryan-s-footsteps.html

  7.

As Beerball surmised, the conversation was about arm strength.

As I've been saying for some time now, I believe Barkley's arm strength is average at best.

My point was that it's alright to be a pocket passer like Brady and Manning (who were mentioned as pocket passers who don't need to scramble) if like Brady and Manning, you have a strong arm.

Drew Brees, Matt Ryan.....not elite arms....would you take one of those guys? You don't have to answer, it's rhetorical and obvious. My point was that there are different types of QB's and Barkley's 40 time should not be a reason for not drafting him. I'm not lobbying for him to be the pick, I'm just stating fact.

  8. Joe Flacco (2008 NFL Combine) - 4.84

That's actually a passable number for an NFL QB especially one who's so tall with long arms and legs which buys you time.

Now the question should be whether Nassib or Barkley could outrun a glacier. Unfortunately, NFL teams don't put glaciers on their defense.

Who cares what Barkley's 40 time is. Running the football is not his style of play, he's a pocket QB that has good pocket awareness and can slide to buy time. Do you think Manning or Brady can outrun most defenders? No, and they don't need to. BTW, Barkley's negative rushing numbers are misleading (as are all rushing numbers for QB's in college) because the NCAA counts sack yardage as rushing yards, and he doesn't run all that much anyway.

I honestly didn't like him, but am slowly coming around after watching his games from 2011 and 2012 over the weekend. Just my opinion. Glad we didn't overpay for Alex Smith.

  9. I'm on the bandwagon. I'd take him over Geno too. Still kinda torn though. I would be happy if we landed Patterson then went all in for a guy like Manziel next year.

I wasn't a fan of selecting Barkley until I had some time to watch his 2011 and 2012 seasons over the weekend. While he doesn't have a great arm! He does a great job of going through his reads and has great pocket presence. He reminds me a lot of Matt Ryan. At 8, I would be fine with Barkley or Smith.

  10. Why?

    Non-exclusive for a guard is 8.5 million

To me if the choice is between long terming Byrd, transition tag for Levitre and cutting Fitzpatrick

or franchising Byrd, losing Levitre and keeping an 8 million dollar QB who has turned over the ball the 2nd most times in the last 3 years of NFL play?

    hmmmm

That's not the choice...Fitz costs the same whether he stays or is cut, unless he agrees to renegotiate his deal.

i can't understand why people automatically blame the FO if Levitre decides to leave. He's a FA, if he chooses to test the market, how is it the organization's fault? I'm certainly not going to blame them for not wanting to pay a guard 9mil a season.

This is what the 1st round will end up looking like. True story.

Good attempt at a mock, Flea....only question I have is Floyd (I don't think he makes it out of the top 5. Jax looks like a great spot for him, or even Oak now that Seymour is gone, Despite the reports that they like Geno. As for our pick, I wouldn't mind taking Ansah if Jordan is off the board. I'm even warming up to Patterson, but both guys are a little bit of a projection considering their limited experience.

  12. Actually, I like the idea of taking WR-QB-TE. Right now, those players would be

    WR Cordarrelle Patterson,

QB Glennon/Wilson (Barkley gone on my board, too early for Nassib)

    TE Kyle Juszczyk

One other way to play it would be to go in a different order:

    TE Zach Ertz (Jr.)

    WR Terrance Williams

    QB Bray, Jones

    The last combination:

    QB Matt Barkley, Geno Smith

TE Tyler Eifert or if he's gone, Travis Kelce

WR Markus Wheaton, Quinton Patton, Ace Sanders

    Which do you like?

Option 1 or 3 in this scenario

How about this? #8 QB Matt Barkley USC .#41 Wr Justin hunter... Tennesee #71 TE Jordan Reed florida????

Also wouldn't mind this scenario, although i am not the biggest Barkley fan....Really like Hunter and Reed though

  13. I came across this article written by PFF's Khaled Elsayed for ESPN's Insider

    http://insider.espn....mod_nfl_xxx_xxx

Since not everyone wants to pay for an Insider membership, here are the write ups on two guys I think could help the Bills fill some holes on the roster without breaking the bank.

    Greg Toler, cornerback

    2012 team: Arizona Cardinals

Take a look at the career regular-season coverage stats of Toler and you get a feel for a guy who could start for a handful of teams -- 720 snaps in coverage and 1,036 yards given up, with five touchdowns and five interceptions along with 13 pass breakups. That 1.44 yards per snap in coverage. That's less than guys like Cary Williams, Dunta Robinson and Aqib Talib gave up this season. Toler's performance in 2012, where quarterbacks had a 51.5 rating throwing into his coverage, isn't to be sniffed at.

You don't need every cornerback on your roster to be a No. 1 guy who shuts down the best the opposition has to offer. You do need them to be able to hold up when teams go after them. Watch how Toler handled Matthew Stafford in Week 15 and you'll see that he can do exactly that.

    Brad Jones, linebacker

    2012 team: Green Bay Packers

As an outside linebacker, Jones was something of a flop in Green Bay. He wasn't cut out for setting the edge and consistently generating pressure.

As an inside linebacker, he was a huge success story. Starting the season as the No. 4 guy, injuries to Desmond Bishop and D.J. Smith meant he found himself starting, and it wasn't long before he was relegating A.J. Hawk to the bench as he assumed an every-down role. His role saw him dealing head-on with linemen and blockers at the second level, while the gimme tackles went to Hawk. That didn't stop Jones from posting a run stop percentage score better than the likes of Daryl Washington while finishing the year as our 11th-ranked inside linebacker.

He's a starter in this league, and the Packers' depth may make him expendable.

Interested in hearing some other "bargain' FA names...

  14. But he went on to say he realizes that the workouts might help so hes going to start doing them. And even when he wasnt doing them, he was the top producer for the team at WR. Its a moot point.

And how each athlete prepares sets NO example. They dont care what the others on the team do when they are not with the team. They care about what they do when they are WITH the team. As long as SJ shows up ready to go at workouts and in the meetings and most important, on Sunday, NOT ONE teammate gives a rats petuty what SJ is doing in January and February.

You people are !@#$ing funny....when SJ was up for a contract, you all went NUTS about how they HAD TO sign him, DESPITE all his quirks JUST LIKE THIS ONE. But now that one of them comes to light, youre all !@#$ing outraged?

It's not what he's doing in Jan and Feb...for the record, I'm sure most people don't give a s&^%....I love the guy's quirkiness, but this about being a professional...Im not outraged, just disappointed

  15. Some people are gym rats 24/7. Some use the offseason for rest. Some do a little of both.

None of the ways in which an athlete approaches "the offseason" means they arent "giving 100%."

Johnson is a pro and whatever way he takes care of himself works. End of story. Different "thing" but Stevie Van Zandt doesnt LOOK at a guitar between Springsteen tours. Quick...burn your copies of The Sopranos!

But whats the problem here? He said hes going to start an off season program becuase he wants to do even better than he has been. That even though hes been good doing whats hes doing, he thinks hee can do better and is going to take steps to make that happen.

    Thats a problem?

What's the problem??? Seriously?? The guy said that if he did try harder in the off season he would probably be a better player!! How is that not a bad example for other teammates??? i like Stevie a lot, but this was just an idiotic statement considering he has new bosses.

  16.

See the player A vs. Player B graphics. Can't get them here.

Now, whom would you say is better, the player who has twice eclipsed 8 YPA, or the one who hasn't? The one whose completion percentage improved every year to a startling 71.2%, or the one whose plateaued around 66%? The one who never threw over 7 INTs per season, or the one who averaged around 12.5 INTs? The one whose rating hovered around the mid 140s, or the one who improved every season up to about 164? Player A is Jones. Player B is Geno Smith. The only stats I see Jones winning out on are career passing yardage, which is in part because he was subbing for an injured Bradford his first year, and sacks taken, which I will chalk up to a better OU offensive line.

    I rest my case.

Edit: working on the look of this. Hold on.

Excellent post...no one seems to look at ypa

  17.

Landry Jones in the 2nd please. In the video I have seen, he is the only qb making multiple reads, regularly looking off db's, and pump faking. The rest of the QB's in the draft are first read or run all day. Jones is the safest bet of them all. He is the most accurate of them all regardless of numbers, quick release, nice footwork, and an arm to make all of the throws. My pick all day

You need to watch more video...Jones may be the best example of a system QB in this draft....big numbers, terrible intagibles...yes he has a big arm and a lot of experience, but if there is a rusher within two yards of him, he panics, can't reset his feet and looks terrible....I think we can all agree that you need a guy that can face the pressure in the NFL because there are very few 'clean' pockets.

  18. I had a few thoughts while watching the Syracuse-USC video that one of our posters put up last week.

I was impressed with Nassib in the Southern Cal game. I was in a distinct minority.

The talent difference was huge, he typically had very little time to throw and the windows were small and closed fast. As the game wore on you could see that he adjusted to the speed of the USC defense and under the circumstances, I thought he played well. Again most of the posters here thought he sucked in that game so take it FWIW which is probably not much.

His release is lightning quick as was Trent Edwards'. That's because they have the same delivery.

Neither guy winds up very much but rather throws the football like a dart, generating the power in the second half of the throwing motion.

Nassib has a stronger arm than Trent, however. Same lightning release and throwing motion though.

I agree with you completley. Watched the USC snaps, and came away impressed by how Nassib hung in there despite the fact his line was poor. He even made some nice throws against a defense that clearly had superior talent.

We obviously don't know how he will turn out, but I won't have a problem if they select him in this draft.

  19. If he didn't tip his hand yesterday, he sure tipped it this morning on wgr when he spoke about how he thought OT class is deep. Then he went on to speak highly of Gilmore and Kirkpatrick (a little less on Kirk because short arms may be a concern). Listen ti the interview at wgr's audio vault.
