  1. His play would probably decline as the season wore on and the Bills would probably rank toward the bottom of the league against the run as he could be easily handled by guards. Or we could all wish that we didn't see what we actually saw and that all problems would disappear with magic pixie dust. Kind of like Flutie.

Or we could move him to where he belongs and effectively get two players for drafting one. But you're right let's draft clod Evans and his 9.6 forty so we can relive the career of James Hardly.

What was it exactly that you saw that you wish you hadn't? The guy racked up 159 tackles for goodness sake. Where does he belong other than at MLB? Brian loves him there. Why don't you?

Please explain how we effectively get two players for drafting one?? What do we do, play D with 10 players??? Ralph will be delighted. One less player to pay.

  2. It would seem Martin went right along with it at times (he isn;t very smart if he is texting this stuff to Incognito--he has to know those texts would be used by RI to defend himself). Then Martin decided he was going to make himself a "cause celebre" (after he was demoted?). I mean, this guy had himself "hospitalized" for...bullying?

This is an interesting point. It appears that Martin was not thinking of quiting the team and citing Incognito's alleged harrassment and locker room atmosphere as the reason he quit when he forwarded those texts to Incognito. If he was, it sure was stupid to engage in the same conduct. He is supposed to be smart having attended Stanford and his mother is an attorney.

Those texts show that Martin engaged in the same low life conduct for which he is now blaiming Incognito and the locker room. He was a paricipant, now he's a victim? It just doesn't wash.

Does anyone know what period of time elapsed between those Martin texts and the date he quit?? A short period of time would suggest he left for other reason(s). I wonder if he was told he might be cut and he wanted to create a reason for his poor play, other than his poor play, so that he might get another chance with another team.

  3. I actually felt a little bad for him in today's press conference, it wasn't funny or cute, it was someone who looked honestly scared to be there. But I was happy to see his teammates come to his aid and turn a bad situation into a funny interview. If I had to put money down, I'd probably bet on the Broncos, but I'm cheering for the Seahawks. They seem like a real team, reminds me of the way teams used to be.

I think I agree with you regarding Marshaun. I watched that piece. Lynch did look scared. He reminded me of Ricky Williams. Rickey was so frightened of the media spotlight he kept his helmit on while doing his very infrequest interviews. Williams also used marijuana to quell his anxieties. Lynch is also a known user. I am becoming sympathetic to the point that I think the NFL should no longer mandate 1 hr. per player on media day. Some are just not cut out for that and it should not be forced on those players.

  4. LOL. I wasn't trying to impress anyone with calling a weakside LB a Will or a strong side LB a Sam - sorry if it came off that way .

What I am trying to do is be realistic in my assessment of Kiko. Like I said earlier, it's hard to argue with Brian, but being Devil's advocate: How many games do you think Brian actually watched Kiko play in? Did he just watch highlights? Did he watch every single bills game? What else was Brian going to say about Kiko? He sucks?

Maybe he watched Kiko more than you did. Who can know? One thing I'm quite certain of; Brian is light years ahead of any of us in being able to recognize MLB talent. Furthermore, he doesn't need to see 16 games to know what he's looking at. What else was he going to say about Kiko? He could have said nothing. He could have said he thinks the DROY award should go to Richardson. He didn't say any of that. He said what he said, I think, because he believes in Kiko. Why be a "devil's advocate"? Can't you just be happy the Bills found a really good player to play a position where we needed a really good player?

Regarding the issue of "thumper", Kiko was not a soft tackler last season. He hits pretty darn hard. He played at 237 lbs. But he's a very young player who is now going through his first off season training and NFL body building process. He's not likely to stay at 237.

Regarding over-pursuit; the Bills' D staff was amazed at his instincts last summer. If he was occasionally over aggressive in his pursuit last season, he'll learn and those occasions will be fewer and fewer as his natural instincts are modified and reinforced with experience. He racked up 159 tackles in his rookie year for goodness sake.

  5. While I share your concern over the 28th ranked run defense. I don't feel that LBer is the biggest need or weakest area, as I feel that run defense can be fixed with the current personnel. One player isn't going to change that defense from #28 to a top ten unit by himself.

Its a passing league right? So Pettine properly went all out for QB sacks, pressure, and rushing the passer with stopping the run a secondary issue.

Consider that 9 of 11 starting players on the current defense are either 1st or 2nd round draft picks. The #4 passing defense, #10 overall, #2 in sacks only got this team to another 6-10 record, same as Wannstedt

I have complete faith that Schwartz will fix the run game, as he cut his teeth with the 46 defense. Which stops the run and forces teams into passing situations.

Still, my take is that Bills defense was on the field way to long to be effective in some games, and were worn down by the 4th quarter. Why? Because the Bills were one of the worst teams in the NFL in sustaining drives. They were something like 31st in time of plays, 22nd in plays, and 28th in drive yards. Now granted that the lack of an experienced QB had something to do with this situation.

The meat of the problem was with the run game. Meanwhile Bills OC true to his word ran the hell outta the ball last season to the tune of most attempts in the NFL and the #2 overall team in rushing yards. Yet at the very same time they were #25 in run blocking? This tells me is was more of the Bills star RB's making those yards then the O line making holes.

All they did by running so much is they put up good stats, and lost a bunch of games in doing so.

When you look at the O line you would see that 3 of the 5 current starters graded in the red against the Patriots. Both LT & C are fine and need no upgrade. Even the RG might be alright with an upgrade at RT.

The Bills had penciled Chris Hairston to be the starting RT before he suffered a leg injury, and ultimately went on IR with an undisclosed illness.

In my view the Bills are desperate for upgrades at LG & RT, and could even use an upgrade at RG before they draft another LBer. Building up that O line to better protect the QB, and to actually control the line of scrimmage, and clock by running the ball.

If you think the depth in the LBer corps is a critical need. Think about the only backups to the O line last season were direct from the waiver wire during the season.

In summation think about this. If the Bills could score first and keep the lead it would allow them to really dominate with that current defense just the way it is. If they could start a drive and run the ball down the field by rushing the ball for 5 yards a pop, while controlling the LoS, and clock. That they would wear out the opposing defense just like what happened to the Bills last year.

Nice post brother. Those who politic for that 1st. rd. TE or WR or, in this case MLB, chosing to ignore the O-line, point to the 2nd over-all rush stat. They fail to mention the 25th position in run blocking stat. Maybe they don't fully understand what that means?

  6. I agree that the defense needs improvement as well, but the focus might not need to be on Kiko. Certainly it's not the position of biggest need on the team. At least one person that might know a little something about MLBs agrees with me. http://bills.buffalo...dle-linebacker/

Perfect. Hard to argue with Brian. These guys that try to impress by talking about gaps, wills, sams etc. want the Bills to mis-position a potentially great MLB. This ain't gonna happen.

  7. I love to watch Lynch run. He is the toughest SOB I have seen in my lifetime; incredibly strong and durable with moves and speed. I wish he was still with Buffalo. Bigger defensive players give him their best shot and he hurts them.

However, I think I understand why he avoids public appearances. He doesn't speak english. It's some kind of language that has some english in it. He attended Cal for three years but gives the impression he never entered a classroom. Really looking forward to him selling Skittles.

  8. huh?

50's the Mike and that would be Kiko

    why would that change?

I agree. I don't know what our D is exactly. Some say it's mostly a 4/3 with variations of a 3/4. If it's mostly a 4/3, and that is what Schwartz had in Detroit, then Kiko's the man and we would only need another ILB for those occasions when we shift to the varient.

Regarding Mosley; he is smallish and suffered a dislocated hip and elbow while at Bama, lost playing time because of those injuries. Additionally, his senior year was not a good as his Junior year. Is he beginning to wear down? I think he's a late 1st rounder because of these concerns.

  9. As always, I operate using the eyeball test...here's a few reviews of his rookie season though:

    PFF Review:

    https://www.profootb...recap-afc-east/

It was a tough season for Martin regardless of which side he lined up. His -22.0 grade placed him 76th out of the top 80 tackles and his 92.0 PBE ranked 50th out of 52. His five starts at left tackle came after starter Jake Long went down to injury and with Long’s pending free agent status, Martin may stay there long term. No matter which side he plays, Martin must show improvement after a difficult rookie campaign.

Film breakdown by Ben Muth (one of the best OL analysts out there IMO):

    http://www.footballo...ure-no-openings

And, amazingly, rookie left tackle Jonathan Martin recognized a blitz by safety Derrick Martin, slid out to pick him up, and still got beat. Yes, Derrick Martin, giving up 100-plus pounds, drove Jonathan Martin backwards before shedding him for a sack

    More analysis:

[it's a Bleacher Report article...not sure why I cannot post it...]

This kinda supports what my eyeballs have been telling me.

Maybe this is a forbidden thing to bring up but I have the impression he might be gay. Something about his mannerisms. There is a story/rumor that his O-line went on vacation together with Incognito and didn't invite Martin. Could it have been a female hunting kind of vacation and his teammates thought he wouldn't be into that? Maybe he's not ready to exit the closit? Maybe I'm misreading him. I don't know.

Like someone here said, there's more to this story than misbehaving teammates.

As for bringing him to Buffalo for a tryout; he caused great harm to the Dolphin organization. I can't imagine any owner or GM having much enthusiasm for his addition to their team.

  10. The reality is that the Bills overdrafted EJ Manuel. This was apparent then and it's apparent now. No team had EJ graded as a first-rounder and the Bills could (and should) have traded back again and continued to accumulate picks. Nothing wrong with zeroing in on EJ -- but it was a (yet another) misuse of a premium draft pick.

I don't think so. Apparent in what way? You know he will never be a top player? You know how every other team rated E.J.? Please tell us; how did Denver rate him? Chicago? Jacksonville?

I think drafting E.J. in the first was exactly the right thing to do. First, I think he can develope into a first rate QB. Second, I think a new Head Coach, needing a QB, needs to draft one early. There was talk that Buffalo should wait till next year when the QB class will be better but I'm not sure that is the case with this year's class. Third, drafting E.J. in the first insures that another team won't beat Buffalo to him and gives Marrone a few years of grace time to develop him before the wolves show up..

  11. ...is getting absolutely ridiculous.

I really appreciate all of the effort Jerry Jones has gone through over the past 10 years to make me feel better about being a Bills fan.

The coaching "moves" in the last week or so are just the latest.

To recap, they have Jason Garrett as Head Coach, whose specialty is Offense and play-calling. That doesn't work so they bring in Bill Callahan as OC to call plays. Now this week, they bring in Scott Linehan as a third offensive coach with the main duty of calling plays.

Not wanting to ignore the chance to create the same mess on the Defensive side of the ball, Jones has named Rod Marinelli DC, and changed Monte Kiffin's title to "Assistant Head Coach of Defense".

That's 5 coaches, each with their own ego and scheme, doing the work of 2 people.

Why won't Jerry fire anyone? Is it because doing so would mean he has to admit he was wrong in hiring them? How many other head coaches are left that they could possibly bring in? Why only 1 Special Teams coach? How hard do you have to try to make the Bills look like a focused, well run organization?

Isn't it great? I'm hoping for nothing but the worst for that organization.

    Aside from Patriots Schadenfreude Day

    Their what???

  12. What ever happened to the NFL investigation and those findings, were they ever released ?

Word has it the investigative results will be out soon, Speculation has it that the results will not be super critical of the Dolfhins organization based on the idea that the Dolphins are not out there doing pre-release damage control.

He never played with Wood. RI played 3 games here and Wood was hurt.

What the whole "major psychological problems" crowd seems to miss is he never had those problems, that we know of, until he played with the biggest scumbag in the league.

    http://profootballta...f-on-incognito/

    Fixed it.

  13. No way on RI, he's not worth the trouble. Bills can get upgrade at LG in FA or draft, they don't need the RI hassle in waiting. As for Martin, I'm on the fence, I don't think any of us know the full story. Martin said he was okay with the traditional hazing but said it became racial and personal and about his family. To me, that crosses a line, even in football. If Martin's story checks out, I think he's worth a look. He would be an upgrade at RT over Pears and if Hairston never plays, he could start. Worst case, he backs up Hairston or a drafted RT.

I agree with you that we, on the outside, don't know the full story. I do know this; he quit during the middle of a season, ending his career, bringing a team mate down, and causing his team to scramble for replacements. Hard to Justrify that other than to point to some intollerable circunstance. He failed as a LT and was failing as a RT. I can't help but wonder if, to what degree, knowing he was failing, he used the situation with Ingognito to justify screwing his team as he did.

An improvement at Rt over Pears? I don't think so. Pears is in decline but he was and still is a tough dude.

  14. For the most part, I agree with you. At the same time, it is very dangerous to paint everyone with the same brush. Football is a team sport filled with many different personalities and body types. Martin was hardly the first person to have problems with RI. Antonio Smith swung his helmet at him. Is that really a better way to deal with it? If you told me RI murder a person, I won't doubt it. He is flat out crazy. Martin was a smart guy who isn't a typical meathead. He probably was afraid of RI. It's easy to say he should just stand up for himself. But you are underestimating the power of the bully. It's like telling someone who has depression to just get over it.

My main point is the guy has talent and it didn't work out there. but it worked out for his whole prior to Miami. RI might be the biggest scumbag in the NFL. So will I give Martin a pass for that? Yup and I'd love the Bills to bring him in.

"Paint everyone with the same brush"; that's a nice cleche. How does it apply to this? Yes, there are varieties of personalities in the NFL but all of those varieties need to have several quailties in common, toughness being at the top of that list.

Martin wasn't the first to have problems with Ingognito. He was, however, the first to quit. Is it possible that Ingognito treated Martin as he did because he wanted to get him to throw down. He wanted to get him to stand up because that was the only way Martin might make it in the league? The two did seem to have some sort of social relationship judging from their frequest e-mails etc. suggesting to me that Martin did understand that Ingognito was trying to help him.

There are and were less talented players in the league that had toughness and dogged determination and were successful, undrafted free agent Wes Welker for example. There were players in the league that had abundant talent but didn't have those other qualities, QB Jeff George for example . They didn't succeed or played as backups throughout their careers. It strikes me that Martin has neither the required talent or toughness or determination to overcome.

One other thing, Martin never played guard in college. He was always a LT and played along side very tough LG David DeCastro. Maybe DeCastro protected him to a degree from that bully opponent? If you're not tough enough to play Tackle in the pros which might require more in the line of finesse and technique than toughness, you'll never succeed as an interior linemen where smash mouth ability is generally the order of the day

  15. Not disagreeing with that at all. He wasn't good. But I just would like to kick the tires on a talented, young, and smart player. Some people want to bring in scumbags or make excuses for guys who didn't work hard (Da'Rick Rogers). Why not Martin? Who knows how much the bullying bother his play. If the guy hasn't any heart, he'd want to prove himself even more now and really stick it to the Fins. The 49ers are really good at bringing in top picks that washed out with their previous team for good bargains. We should do that same.

You really think he'll be on the 49ers' roster at the start of next season???

  16. I'm shocked by some of the responses here. Incognito is a known idiot. Yet Martin still is getting crap for saying enough is a enough? Because he's a football player, he has to physically stand up to a known wacko? How would that go over in your job place? Martin took a stand and because of it, lockerrooms will be different.

Martin was tough enough to protect Andrew Luck's blindside in college. He was tough enough to be a 2nd round pick. Who's to say that his play was hurt because of the crap going on in that lockerroom? It would cost nothing to bring him in. IMO, he has the potential to be the perfect RT in today's NFL. He needs strength but honestly, athletic tackles are more important than maulers. The Bills have a great lockerroom and Martin would love it here. Personally, I would have tried to stand up to that idiot RI. But why get on the case of guy who decided to take a different way than violence?

    http://www.thefinsid...s-a-left-tackle

    http://grantland.com...llying-scandal/

Yes, absolutely. He's a football player and he quit his team. I want no part of that kind of softness on my team. There are known wacko's that play defense, Sue for example, that would likely be locked in the slammer today if it had not been for football talent. What would he do facing Sue? Complain to the ref that Sue hit him too hard? The NFL is no place for the "can't we all just get along" crowd. I think it's doubtful that we'll ever see him on a NFL roster again.

I know a guy who was harrassed in high school. One day someone pushed him once to often. He burst into tears but then he started throwing punches. No one ever bothered him after that. There are times in life when you need to take a stand. That's how you gain respect. There are players in the league who now see this guy as a putz and would love to play against him because they know that when things get down and dirty, he will quit.

  17. I have the impression that Pettine is a charismatic guy who subcoaches will follow. This is not a good thing for Buffalo regardless of how positive those in the Bills' organization appear to be. We are losing half of our defensive staff and starting anew with a new DC and several key assistants and all that brings; new nomenclature, signals, philosophy etc. It would have been great if, after a year of learning, our D could have taken off from there. In some respects, it's back to the drawing board.

Maybe Marrone should have known this would happen since Pettine did the same to the Jets. I'll bet he didn't think it would happen so soon.

Lets hope Schwartz can gather top assistants but that may be difficult since it's already late in the Lets Hire Some New Coaches game.

  18. My personal opinion is teams should not even be able to prevent coaching moves if the move involves a promotion. That's what the Bills did with Pettine and O'Neil and I am happy they did the right thing. Failure to do so would be akin to a restraint of trade violation which would not be tolerated in a non-monopolistic environment.

Restraint of trade??? The man is under contract. It is within the Bills legal right to compell him to honor it if that is the Bills' wish and sue O'Neil for breach if O'Neil fails to honor it. Cleveland might offer compensation to induce the Bills to let him walk if they want him badly enough.

  19. Here's my take:

I have no doubt that Whaley is ready to pounce on any UDFAs, just as he did last year

No underclassmen at the Senior Bowl; they can make their case on tape and at the combine and individual workouts

Ford is probably a top 40 pick, unlikely a top 10. Martin is a near lock to be a 1st rd pik; guessing in the 20-30 range

    #1. Hope you're right.

#2. They could change the name to Numero Uno College All Star Game. I'd love to see more of the best prospects perform in practice like Senior Bowl prospects do. I'm certain pro scouts feel the same. For example; I really liked Baylor G Cyril Richardson before this game. Not so much now. Completely unaware of Wisconsin LB Chris Borland before this game. Morgan Moses, Virginia OT, might be a 3rd/4th rounder that could help Buffalo at RT.

#3. Ford looks like Von Miller did in his Senior Bowl and there are teams that have pass rusher at the top of their wish list. I think he's a sure fire 1st. rounder and I wouldn't be surprised if he goes in the top half of that round.

  20. With such a large number of underclassmen in May's draft, players that in previous years might be 6th or 7th round selections, will be undrafted free agents this year. Last year Buffalo signed a number of good undrafteds. This year's undrafted class should be even better. I hope Whaley is up for it.

The players in the Senior Bowl this year were, it's said, not as good a group as last years players. Is it time to invite underclassmen?

There were some excellent Senior Bowl players this year however. Dee Ford, Auburn DE, was named MVP. Is he as good or better than Barr an a OLB? Has he moved himself into the top ten. How about Aaron Donald, the Pitt DT, who might be an excellent 3/4 DE for a D like Buffalo's.

The best TE in Mobile is said to be C.J. Fiedorowicz a throwback style player. Fiedorowicz might be there for us in the 3rd.

T/G Zack Martin is said to have been the best O-lineman. I was thinking of him as an early 2nd rounder Buffalo might grab. Some now think he a top 20 selection. Unless the Bills can trade down and get extra picks, Martin is not likely to be selected by Buffalo since he is not good enough for top 10 and too good to get out of the 1st Rd.
