  1. This..

Raiders hit intermediate routes and will toss it deep to keep defenses honest once in a while

Raiders get their YACS from screens and beating LB's outside

Expect Hue to put speedy guys like Tiwan Jones on a LB to create a mistmatch

    Tiawan Jones

Take a look at this video

This was vs the Saints starters in week 3

Whats great about this video is.. its not a homer video that only shows hghlights.. this is every carry of Tiawan Jones, he gets stuffed a few times.. but watch the whole video.. you'll get a good idea of what to expect from Oakland

    youtube.com/watch?v=_-_mxXyoTNs

How can you watch that video and say he doesn't look like CJ2K lol...

He probably won't ever come close to the stature of CJ. But when you watch how he runs..it's almost a carbon copy running style. Hard to get a hit, slippery, and speed on top of speed.

  2. Wow. I can remember when the Raiders D was terrifying...dominating... a real "shut down" defense with no bending about them....and I was never a Raiders fan...but they were my 2nd team growing up 'cuz of Darryl Lamonica.

As you can probably guess...I never saw Lamonica play...

Again... from '83 when I was a Raider fan, the Raiders never had a dominant, SHUT DOWN D.

There is a difference between terrifying and shut down.

For example, the Raiders 2000 team defense was a terrifying defense. I believe they put out 11 of the starting 16 QB's they faced. Were they a shut down D? Absolutely not....In 2000, the Ravens definitely were, though.

I can't quite make sense of this sentence "as you would explaining how the Bills with the emerging career". There seems to be something missing?

From what I can make out, you're trying to say that you can not, in fact,

" explain to me how a team with a fantastic pass D and near league-leading sacks wound up 20th in the NFL in pts given up by passing"

Yes, that was what I was saying. In fact... I can explain it for you. If the team runs downfield on a porous run D. Once they were in the red zone they passed more than they ran. Pretty simple...

But, as we both have eluded to (you got me fully in "this season" mode)... So

    This Season.....

    1st in Rushing D

    2nd in turnovers caused

    6th in scoring D

    4th in Interceptions....

    1st in rushing offense

So, we have concluded a few things....

We are THE 2nd BEST rushing offense.

We are THE BEST rushing defense.

We are still in the top third in total D

We turn the ball over just as much as the Bills D

So.... let's talk about that. Remember? Last season doesn't count anymore... And the Raiders match up very damn well with the Bills on paper.

As for the passing attack, it's stump simple. When your offense can't string a series of plays together and stay on the field, and your defense can't stop the run and get the enemy's O OFF the field, you wind up in the bottom 3rd of the NFL for passing stats, even with a decent QB driving 13 of 16 games.

Also have to have a running game to set up your passing attack...

Hope you can run against the leagues best rushing defense.

What I'm gathering from all this Sturm und Drang is maybe the Raiders are, in fact, all sizzle and no steak?

What you're gathering isn't much.... You should be gathering that the biggest advantage of this game for the Bills is the 1pm EC game at home.

    Nothing more, nothing less...

They go for the big, dramatic play...cutting lose with the Big Run....breaking out for the Big Sack.

But they can't power-run to control the LOS and convert the 3rd down to keep a drive going and put 7 on the board

And they can't, in fact, stop the other team from "dinking and dunking" their way down the field to put 7 on the board.

And either their LB are suspect in pass coverage, or their safeties aren't what they need to be, or both.

They aren't "taking care of business".

uhhh.....we controlled the LOS very well... You want to bring up the penalties again? No problem, they are the biggest drive killer. Take away those penalties though, and watch the game, it was really a dominating trench performance for the Raiders.

Again, the passing D is still working out kinks and they may or may not improve as the season goes. But the underneath spots are where you kill the Raiders.

I do sympathize with you, because we haven't had a team that "takes care of business" here in some time. We might, this year. Time will tell.

That is my running theme throughout.

I'm sure it's very impressive, all the straw men you're burning, setting up arguments I don't read anyone here making about "NUMBER ONE RUSHING DEFENSE" or "VAUNTED passing attack." Unfortunately, my reading comprehension isn't good enough to appreciate it. I'm sure the Raiders will be much more disciplined this week in the Ralph...after all, Bump sez so!

Not building any straw man... I haven't implied anything you, or another Bills fan on here at some point, has not said.

Am I "expecting" them to be more disciplined? Yes, I am.

I was hoping to get some good football conversation to understand why a team with such impressive athletes at every position isn't burning up the league, or even the AFC West.

Where's the catch? What's the flaw?

I will tell you why... because it takes more than a few aspects of a defense and/or offense to "burn up the league"... But I do think we are closer to that than the Bills are, that is all. Nothing more, nothing less.

This is down at the level of "Yo Momma", so...over and out....

    It really isn't.

  3. Chronic & Bump, it's been good having you guys share your Raider fantasies with us.

But gloating is half the fun of football banter. I hope you guys are man enough to return here Sunday afternoon so we can have a little fun at your expense.

Personally, I have a bet with a friend of mine from San Leandro. If the Bills lose, I have to buy a Raider jersey and wear it to work one day. After that, he gets the jersey If (when) the Bills win, it's the reverse.

I will without question be back to eat my crow...if indeed that is the case.

  4. Wow, this looks like a "distinction without a difference" to me....especially if there were only 2 plays before FG kick.

There is a difference between "overtime matchup"...there were two games... one was a regular game..one was overtime..

Did it really need to boil down to semantics? Clearly, matchup means GAME.. Have you ever spoke about somebodies performance based solely on overtime? I never have... Seems pretty silly to me lol

I don't want to be harsh, but so far not more impressed by the so called Bump demolishment by facts here than I was by the Raiders great pass D on Monday....

Yea sure... Orton completed a lot of underneath stuff... I'm sure Fitzpatrick will too. Raiders have always been a "ebdn but don't break" defense. I have never seen them have a truly dominant, shut down D. I've been a Raider fan for about 27 years.

Maybe if you can explain to me how a team with a fantastic pass D and near league-leading sacks wound up 20th in the NFL in pts given up by passing?

IDK? I'm sure I would have as much trouble explaining this to you as you would explaining how the Bills with the emerging career of a lifelong journeyman QB had his team in the bottom third of all team passing stats?

So much for that VAUNTED passing attack...

Or why a team with a great penetrating DL has a middle-of-the-pack run D?

Hey, I will just take a page right out of the Bills Homer's Textbook... "That was LAST SEASON... This is 2011 and we are THE NUMBER ONE RUSHING DEFENSE IN THE LEAGUE!!"

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH [/Ric Flair]

Or how about why Campbell was sacked 33 times last year, and had his completion percentage fall 5%?

Why would I explain that? I'm not here hyping my very average QB

Can you explain these facts? Help me out here....

hey, I have a question for you....

How did you feel after the 2003 season opener...???

OOOOOOHHHHHHH ... I know THAT one stung.....

  5. The Bills scored a TD after the McCluster fumble. The Chefs got the ball back and didn't score. The Bills got the ball back and didn't score on their next 2 possessions. So the Chefs had every opportunity to do something before the score got out of hand.

The Raiders ran just 2 plays in OT before kicking the game-winning FG. And now you're saying Veldheer gave up 1 sack (which means Barnes gave up the other 2.5), whereas before he "blanked him?" Sorry if I don't believe you. You guys have been making-up "facts" and expecting no one to call you on them.

    Reading is fundamental...

"Veldheer pancaked Hali about 5 times in the overtime matchup"

"Veldheer pancaked Hali about 5 times in overtime"

Are these two different statements entirely?? Yes they are!

I have blown up a couple posters on here with facts... I don't make stuff up as I go along... My stuff checks out.

The Chiefs did not line Hali up exclusively on Veldheer, they rushed him from the right side also.... ask me how I know...and then ask me how you don't..

  6. The raiders will only have 4 wr's for the game missing their top two targets. If we put another out of the game they won't be able to spread us out and we'll be able to keep that extra body near the box to stop that rushing attack.

Raiders don't spread out anyway... they rarely use a 3 wide set and never use a 4 wide. If they do go empty backfield it's with DMAC and/or Reece.

So.... that theory couldn't be more wrong. This "8 in the box" stuff isn't some ancient chinese secret.

You got Darren McFadden running on you or Jason Campbell throwing the ball....

10 out of 10 teams are going to try and make Campbell beat you with his arm.

And it's not like you have Adrian Wilson back there or anything

  7. 2nd ranked pass defense Last season. Nnamdi Asmogudghkldahdgklhadlvknarjkn is now in Philly. New ballgame there.

Yea we're really going to miss out on Nnamdi covering the #2 all over the field... Stanford Routt graded out as a top 3 corner last year per PFF

Brondon Lloyd couldn't do anything. And Stevie Johnson will be on Routt Island come 1pm tomorrow. you will see.

  8. Who is this "we"? Have you got a mouse in your pocket?

I'm not talking about 2010. It's the 2011 football season now. Those 2010 yards won't help you win.

I don't care how many yards McFadden got against Denver.

Everyone knows Davis drafts for a track team, and if ya miss enough tackles it's time for 100 yd dash.

If you like, I'll even throw in repeat acknowledgement that he's a fine back and a better back than our starter, Freddy

What I want to know is how many touchdowns did he score? (That would be 0)

How many 3rd downs did he convert? (That looks like...one?)

Why did Oakland only convert 1/3 of their 3rd downs, with such a mightly line blocking for stellar backs?

Why did they settle for 3 field goals, with all that blocking and running firepower?

Why did Denver have 25 1st downs to 20 for Oakland and throw for >300 yds even with the mighty and athletic Denver DL living in their backfield?

Can you elucidate these mysteries of football for my lowly AFC East hopeful self?

'Cuz from here it looks like the answer to my questions are:

    1) Oakland had 3rd and long because they dug themselves into holes by being undisciplined goons

    2) When they gave the ball to McFadden on 3rd he didn't get it done

So if they were in FG range, they got 3. If they weren't they were done.

I love the idea of undisciplined, penalty-prone goons rolling into the Ralph. Rock!

    +1

3 plays on 3rd down wher they handed it to McFadden...

one he ripped a 20 yard run.

the other he had 6 and 2..

Sorry that 3rd and long runs aren't getting converted... Most NFL RB's aren't going to "get it done".. Not sure if you thought that was your ace up the sleeve or whatever. But if it was, come a little harder.

Yes, they had an undisciplined game. And still won despite 15 and 131 in penalties in Denver.

They won't be nearly as undisciplined this Sunday.. Which is bad for the Bills.

EDIT: Hopeful, want to know what a stellar O Line and beastly runing game does for you??

Check out the last drive of the game

3:43 4th Oak 1st & 10 at Oak20 Michael Bush rush to the right for 10 yards to the Oak30. Tackled by Von Miller.

2:59 4th Oak 1st & 10 at Oak30 Michael Bush rush up the middle for 2 yards to the Oak32. Tackled by Brodrick Bunkley.

    2:54 4th Oak 2nd & 8 at Oak32 Denver Broncos timeout.

2:54 4th Oak 2nd & 8 at Oak32 Jason Campbell pass to the right to Darrius Heyward-Bey for 9 yards to the Oak41. Tackled by Cassius Vaughn.

2:11 4th Oak 1st & 10 at Oak41 Michael Bush rush up the middle for 2 yards to the Oak43. Tackled by Joe Mays.

    2:05 4th Oak 2nd & 8 at Oak43 Denver Broncos timeout.

2:05 4th Oak 2nd & 8 at Oak43 Michael Bush rush to the right for 12 yards to the Den45. Tackled by Brian Dawkins.

    2:00 4th Oak 1st & 10 at Den45 Two Minute Warning.

2:00 4th Oak 1st & 10 at Den45 Jason Campbell rush up the middle for a loss of 3 yards to the Den48. Tackled by Jason Hunter.

1:17 4th Oak 2nd & 13 at Den48 Jason Campbell rush up the middle for a loss of 2 yards to the Oak50.

0:36 4th Oak 3rd & 15 at Oak50 Jason Campbell rush up the middle for a loss of 2 yards to the Oak48.

Don't see one third down on that drive do you?? That's called a nail in the coffin... look at the pass to rush ratio... And they KNEW the run was coming and still couldn't stop it..

How do you like those apples??

sorry, there WAS a third down... the Campbell kneel

  9. WHOA!! Talk about "delusions of grandeur"

I'm enjoying this. These Raiders fans are kind of funny. Talk about delusions of grandeur.

This game is very simple. This year, you will need a shut down defense to keep the Bills under 28 points. We're talking Jets, Ravens, maybe Pats*, maybe Bears when Urlacher is playing well, maybe Steelers if they pull things together.

After one game against an inflated Chiefs team....you are writing stuff like this in stone... WOW!!

Raiders are not on this list. They have a decent defense, like the Bills, but not great or shut down.

Arguable...but continue...Raiders D Line is DEFINITELY better... everything else might be a wash

So, can the Raiders score over 30 points just by running the ball? Easy answer, no. Maybe 20, maybe 24.

Perhaps not... but if we score 20..you have to score 21. That isn't a given....no matter what model you use.

Raiders will not be able to keep up with Bills offense, even if they own time of possession (which I doubt they will - it's easy to key on the run defense when that's all the other team offers).

    Bills 31, Raiders 23

Thing is.. We don't offer Run D.. last year we were the second ranked PASS D and second in the league in sacks. Last week we stuffed the run. So if the Raiders can stuff the run now too??? It will be a very, very long day for the Bills because we already know they can get at the passer just like they did last season.

  10. Which teams did you lose to last year?

Pitt, Miami, Jax, Indy, SF, Hou, AZ, Tenn

The Raiders lost to some games to some bad teams. I'm getting more optimistic about our chances.

Indeed we did, however, you lost to some great teams last year and I still like our chances.

In fact, Bills lost to a couple of the same bad teams we did.. and a couple bad ones (Minnesota?)

and you lost to the Chiefs last year, who we swept.

  11. glad you like it. after a decade of losing, poking a little fun

if the team continues to kick @, i'll change it to lakers of the nfl or manchester united of the nfl

lol I got a good laugh out of it..

I always appreciate humorous cynicism. Gotta be able to laugh at yourself. The forum I call home, we do it all the time. So I can relate.

One thing we have in common is our teams have sucked forever.

  12. Really? *rummage* *rummage*

    Let's see, that would be:

1 rushing touchdown last week for your backup running back (Campbell)

1 rushing touchdown last week for our backup running back (Spiller)

    1 > 1?

Must be that new math they teach in the Left coast schools.

    We're talking 2010

2011 - DMAC has more yards than both Jackson and Spiller combined.

  13. Well played... the guy does look fresh this year though. He had a great camp and great preseason, there were actually very few times he rushed the passer last week. He was setting the edge in the run game all day, and then didn't even go back in the game most of the 3rd quarter and all of the 4th b/c the 2nd teamers were put in. I know he had a bad couple years, but the guy has some burst back.

The Chargers fans were saying the same thing in '09. I mean, the last thing I want to see is Merriman have some epiphany on the rehab trail. In a loss, it would just make it exponentially worse. Because I had to witness some very bad losses at the hands of that awful celebration.
