  1. I'm not talking 1 guy in the league any given year a million years ago. I'm talking about today's "It's a passing league" NFL. The TE position has changed league wide not almost literally 1 guy a generation like the guys you mentioned.

Sure there are 10-12 teams out of 32, which represents the worst 3rd of teams, that MIGHT take SJ OVER their #1 WR. Could he play on most any team? SURE. Would he be there #1 receiving target? HELL NO. This is why I include TEs in today's passing league NFL. Would New England rather have SJ than Gronk? A resounding NO. Would New England rather have SJ than Hernandez? Probably not.

I get the rather specific point you are making about what has traditionally been called a WR but that point is less valid in 2011 and beyond with a lot of good offenses employing TE's as their #1 or #2 RECEIVING option.

Not trying to be argumentative, but NE,SD,NO,SF,GB(kinda),Atl(kinda) are the only teams I see as a team that employs the TE as much in the passing game as WRs.So if we include these TE's, SJ is still a #1 receiver in this league.

Out of the list I gave, do you really believe he wouldn't be the #1 on most? MIGHT take SJ over their #1. Starting to think you have something personal against him(JK) :D

  2. Exactly. It is a different, considerably more passing game now. Plus Gailey has been pass happy particularly with his 5-wide thing last season.

I think Johnson is a capable receiver that has been immature in the past (which hopefully is behind him now), and has had a bad tendency to drop the big ones (I REALLY hope this is behind him now).

I'm glad he is going to remain a Bill, and at a fair price to everyone. But thinking he is one of the greatest ever based on this one stat does not make sense to me.

I think there is some confusion here. I'll try to clear it up. From what I've read here, there is the camp that says he's not a #1 and the camp that says he is. The camp that says he's not seems to think the other camp says that he is "Elite" or the best on the Bills ever, or top ten. What we are saying is that he is a #1 receiver in this league, today. Not Elite, not the best, not top 10, not the bset Bill ever, but a #1 receiver in this league. Hope this helps.

  3. Wood will almost assuredly be on PUP list at start of the season.

Bell is gone unless he initiaties something with the Bills. He will test the market and if the rest of the league sees him as injury prone and he does not get the money he is looking for, he and his agent may come back to the Bills looking for a contract.

If Bell is not signed the #10 pick has to be a LT.

FYI...Fitz broke ribs on a blitz up the middle not around LT

FYI...Fitz broke ribs on a blitz up the middle not around LT

By an ex-bill I believe(Fletcher) that I hoped would be resigned at the time.

  4. I keep hearing this...

    Is it true?

It's hard to believe to me that both Andre Reed or Eric Moulds didn't do this during their career.

You heard it right. First ever in Bills history from what I hear too. Yet he's not a #1 WR?!?!?! Right....Reed was our #1 and we were running the K gun for Christ sake. No one will argue that Mould was a #1 WR in the league. But SJ is not a true 1# ???

    :wallbash:

  5. I was fine with everything Dopey said. The last statement however in his entire post was the one that you chose to address. It's that last little tail on an intelligent post that is small and meaningless that becomes the focus of another posters response.

He asked how those QBs would perform if their top WRs, lineman and running game were taken from them? He then added on that he thought Fitz could have done as well with the Patriots, Saints and Giants if he was the QB of their team. That is what you chose to respond to not how those QBs would have performed if they had to endure the same hell storm of injuries that Fitz did. I assume those were the points that he really wanted addressed.

I do it constantly and I need to stop myself. If I post one sentence too many that someone can find fault with they ignore every other solid point I made and focus on one sentence in a multi-paragraph post.

Gotcha, I'll try to keep that in mind, but I mix stats with personal obvservation and opinion to put a human aspect to my post/reply.Glad you were fine with most of the post. That's what I like about these forums. We can vent, give opinions and I don't get mad when someone disagrees(as long as they don't get personal). After all of that, Fitz still takes those teams to the playoffs. How many of them would have taken the Bills to the playoffs last year? Maybe a healthy Manning, and I don't mean Eli.Brady, maybe. Brees, no. Eli, no. Again IMO. Sorry, couldn't help it.

Guys like us have to learn not to throw in the "the useless extraneous claim". Your last statement has no value and it allows a poster to completely ignore all of the other insightful and very valid points that you made. It gives them something to argue against that really has no baring on anything. I tried the approach of pounding all those facts and more into Fitz Haters heads but it doesn't matter. He doesn't walk on water so he can't get it done.

Brady would have cried like a little girl to the refs every play if he lost some of his probowl lineman, Gronk, Welker and had even less of a running game. Throw in playing with the 30th ranked defense instead of the 15th ranked defense and Brady would have faked injury to avoid playing and besmirching his legacy and looking like a regular old QB who benefits from the team, system and scheme around him.

Because my "useless extraneous claim" received attention, I don't see it as useless or extraneous. I appreciate the thought though. Glad you found the rest insightful and very valid. I try.

  6. I always try to use the term pass catcher that way you don't exclude the TE's that are also better than SJ. Your stats eliminate the 5-6 TEs that are as good as or better from a production stand point. Miles Austin by the way who you compared SJ to got his 2011 stats in an injury filled 10 game season.

Don't get me wrong SJ is by far the best we have and I am super glad we have him but get real. He barely cracks the top 20 in most PASS CATCHER categories that matter. Let's look at SJ the "pass catcher"

    2011

    Rec 19th 76

    YDs 20th 1004

    TDs 21st 7

    1st 25th 45

Basically SJ averages bottom 3rd of all 32 team's number 1 "PASS CATCHERS" using those important categories. Today's NFL TEs are more WRs than they have ever been.

You are correct, I left the TE position out of the stats. The OP asked what is a #1 WR. As for cherry picked stats for 2011, I used the same criterea for both years. Top 20 pass catchers in a league of 32 teams shows me he's a #1 in this league. Elite, no, but a #1 WR in this league. Are you telling me you can't find, maybe 10-12 teams that would use SJ as a #1 right now? NE,Clev,Balt,Jags,Maybe Tenn,Raiders,Bears,Vikes(Harvin? Really?),Panthers,(S.Smith is old),Bucs,Skins,Niners,Seahawks,Rams? Thats 14 right there. Remove 2-3 and that's still double digit teams that would love SJ. I get the "pass catcher" thing, but a #1 WR, once again, HELL YES!!!

  7. Now if he only had the stats compared to other pass catchers to prove it :(

    :D

    2010:

    TD's

    Bowe 15

    Greg Jennings, Calvin Johnson 12

Brandon Lloyd, Nicks, and Mike Williams 11

Roddy White, Mike Wallce, J. Maclin and Stevie 10

Only 6 recievers caught more TD's

    Rec.

    White 115

    Wayne 111

    S. Moss 93

    Fitz 90

Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall, Welker 86

    Amendola 85

    Colston 84

Stevie 82 #11 in the League

    Yds

    Getting tired of typing so,

    1,073 #11 in the League

    1st downs

61 tied for 4th in the league(only Wayne, B Lloyd and R. White had more)

    1st down %

    Stevie 74.4% Only Brandon Lloyd(93.5%) and D Bowe(76.4%) have a higher % of the top 20 recievers(receptions)

    2011

    Td's

7 tied for 18th with the likes of Miles Austin, AJ Green,Nicks, to name a few.

    Rec

76 tied for 12th in the league

    Yd's

1,004 tied for 18th in the league

    1st down

45 tied for 20th in the league

    1st down %

    59.2%

Not so good here, but still close to 60% of passes for a 1st down.

Over the last 2 seasons, I would argue that Stevie is a # 1. There are 32 teams x 5 receivers per team(160 recievers). Top 10 receiver?, Probably not, but definetly a # 1 on more than 1/2 the NFL teams. Don't forget how the injuries affected our offense last season and the lack of a true #2 meant teams paid more attention to Stevie. A #1 receiver? HELL YES!!!

  8. Patriots - Brady

    Saints - Brees

    Giants - Eli Manning

    .

    .

    .

    Bills - The Amish Rifle

That's the difference. You can't overcome a crappy defense unless your offense has a stud at QB able to put up big points.

If these guys would have lost, oh I don't know, 2 of their top 3 recievers( we used Spiller at WR for a while), league leading rusher, possible PB center, best pass catching te on the team and the top 2 lt's and move your possible PB LG all around the line, it would have been a different story. Brady without his top 2 recievers, top RB and a beat up line(especially up the middle) can't handle pressure up the middle. Neither could Brees or Manning. Rodgers either for that matter. GB d wasn't great this past season either. The Amish Rifle was doing just fine before the injuries set in. Were we leading the league in a few offensive categories? Yes. Would he have been as good as Brees, Brady, or Manning? Probably not, but he would have guided each of those teams to the playoffs last season. IMO.

  9. This is an interesting situation for Buddy. How can he offer more to VJ than what he just signed SJ? No room to neogtiate. Maybe that is a blessing. He can say here is the same contract take it or leave it. A WR corps of VJ, SJ, Easley, Nelson, and Jones would look pretty good - on paper.

I think a healthy Parrish will produce more than Jones. I think Parrish was developing some nice chemistry with Fitz before he got hurt. Hope to see it happen this season. Jones sucked all last year. Hands of stone.

  10. Get real, have the Bills EVER even been in the running for one of the top FAs??? I hate to say it but Buffalo is probably one of the least favorable landing spots for free agents, (given the location and how little money we spend) so to think we have a chance at signing the BEST one, thats just ridiculous.

Cosmo must be a young'un. I'm only doing this because you made a point to say EVER .Starting in the 60's we picked up a FA named Jack Kemp. The 70's were a drug induced blur.In the 80's we pick up FA's from the USFL named Jim Kelly,Kent Hull and Ray Bentley. Yes we drafted Kelly in '83, but it wasn't 'till '86 when we signed him. Bryce Paup and Tasker were FA's. Lofton,Christie, Flutie, Sam Adams, Spikes, Fletcher, Lawyer Malloy(sp), Marcus Stroud, Kawika Mitchell,TO. Even though they didn't pan out like we thought we signed Dockery and Langston Walker to bolster our line(big signings at the time). I'm sure if I researched more I could find a few more examples. So we aren't the Redskins or Cowboys. What has that gotten them lately? Since 2000 the Skins have been to the playoffs in 05 and 07. Last Super Bowl, 91. Cowboys, 03, 06, 07 and 09 last Super Bowl 95. If we don't sign a Big name FA, it's because we chose NOT TO SPEND THE $. Don't kid yourself inot thinking they won't play if we PAY.

  11. Cap savings if cut -Kelsay 2.55 mil johnson 3.50 mil, Edwards 4.17 mil , Merriman 5.25 mil, Tot= 15.47.

It might be more as they've changed Kelsay's cap savings from 3.55mil to 2.55mil- not sure if it's a typo or if Kelsay has earned a bonus already or if he has restructured.

I keep hearing Merriman's contract is guaranteed, which would mean if we cut him he still counts on the cap for the full amount. If true he stays.

  12. Hello Cantankerous, how are you?

If people on this forum greeted each new poster in a thread, it would be ridiculous. That is the equivalent of what people are doing on the radio. (I anticipate people saying "that would be great, so much more civil" etc., but it wouldn't. It would get annoying). In fact, maybe the polite people here should try that, and see how it wears on them? Every new poster, in every thread. I'm certain even the most polite here would eventually stop that foolishness, but it would be fun to see.

I listen to lots of sports radio. You can hear the annoyance in the voice, and can feel them pushing to get things going, be it JT the Brick, Dan Patrick, or whoever (I know Schoop is a bad example because he is so disliked here). I know it seems small in individual cases, but over and over it's not good radio.

The caller is not there to have a personal conversation, they are in a forum, and there to give an opinion.

Almost as annoying as Using Bold Text to make a point!

    :wallbash:

  13. An idiot w 35 mil........not sure how this makes him an idiot......enjoy your 40 hrs of work sir.....I can't stand all the Stevie "hate" around here...He plays hard he celebrates which means "idiot" to older bills fans.....

I'm an "older fan and I agree with JPS. It's not "Stevie" hate, it's "15 yd personal fouls for celebrating" hate.

...He plays hard he celebratesdraws 15 yd penalties even after Coach Gailey talked to him about this which means "idiot" to older bills fans.....

    There, that's better.

Us older folks have a better understanding of what "we" mean.

  14. F the 35 mil, I will work my entire career and be lucky to see his first years salary.

I am an older fan and I don't think he is an idiot because he celebrates (though I do think the entire celebration thing is out of hand, do we need to see one after every play?), but I do think he is an idiot when his celebrating costs his team ... multiple times.

I love the internet. You can insult people you don't know personally and don't have to be accountable for it. But it's ok to insult people if they play for the professional sports team you follow.

Not sure if there is sarcasm in this post or not.So I'm going with ,yes sarcasm. Do you ever insult people if they play for the professional sports team you follow? Me thinks you have.

  15. I think you mean Greg Jennings and you forgot Steve smith, Brandon Lloyd, and anquan Boldin

I think you mean Greg Jennings and you forgot Steve smith, Brandon Lloyd, and anquan Boldin

    That's better.

    New England (welker)

    Miami (Marshall)

    Jets (Santonio Holmes)

    Pittsburgh (Wallace)

    Cincinnati (Green)

Colts (Wayne (maybe close due to wayne's age)

    Titans (Kenny Britt)

    Texans (Andre Johnson)

    Chargers (Vincent Jackson)

    Chiefs (Bowe)

----- That's 10 so far in the AFC

    Cowboys (Bryant, Robinson (closer one))

Giants (Nicks, Cruz (kinda a stevie clone, but its not just a better team. He has better speed and maturity))

    Eagles (DeSean Jackson)

    Packers (Greg Lewis)

    Lions (Calvin Johnson)

    Vikings (Harvin)

    Atlanta (Roddy White)

    Saints (Colston)

    Cardinals (Fitzgerald)

    ----- That's 19 teams.

You can maybe debate 1 or 2. To test it ask yourself "would I trade Stevie, straight up, for that guy?" Or, even better, ask yourself "If Stevie gets traded to this team, will he be the #1 receiver?"

To me, a #1 receiver is someone who can be counted upon (not just "able to") to get open against zone or man, make the big catch downfield or across the middle in the big situations, and makes the opponent want to double-team him even in today's wide-open passing game. Maybe someone you design your offense around because he's that good (welker).

Stevie is not that. A #1 does not mean "best on the team." I dont think anyone would argue that Jacksonville has a #1 receiver.

  16. Now I liked Terrell as a Buffalo Bill, but I can certainly understand the little piece of crap Drew Brees not wanting to help guys like T.O. make up for all his bad judgement...

Terrell Owens is catching passes again. And plenty of karma. Owens, the former braggadocios wide receiver who was let go by the Cincinnati Bengals, finally did get back on the football field. He scored three touchdowns last week for the Allen (Texas) Wranglers of the Indoor Football League.

If people ask Owens these days about his well-being, he tells them, Im in hell. He told GQ magazine in a recent interview: I dont have no friends. I dont want no friends.

Owens is apparently broke and unpopular, not to mention grammatically challenged. Hes made $80 million in the NFL, but says he has almost no money left because of bad investments, including an Alabama entertainment complex that turned out to be illegal. He pays child support to four different women. He bought a home in New Jersey for $4 million and had to sell it for $2 million. He blames bad advice. Now he plays football for $225 per game, an extra 25 bucks if the Wranglers win.

T.O. will be just fine when he hits retirement age. If what I heard was right when OJ was aquitted and then standing trial for the CIVIL suit, OJ gets 30k a month from the nfl retirement plan. You can't sue someone for their retirment income by law is what was said during the civil trial. He has a huge house in Fl and played golf everyday 'til he screwed up again. Brees came out as an A$$ because the guys that need help are the guys who played when there really weren't any benefits to ex-players, 1960's and before maybe?

  17. I don't think moving Levitre to LT makes us better. If anything, the line would be Hairston / Levitre / Wood / DeCastro / Pears.

I personally like the DeCastro potential pick because if Wood gets hurt again they can move Urbik to center and not really miss a beat. And I think they resign Bell...just my feeling.

Unless they really think something of Mike Jasper. Then the chances of DeCastro are lower.

I'm so with yo on this. I hope Bell is resigned, then you'll have Bell,Lev,Wood,Decastro,Pears with Hariston(Sp),Urbick and Rhino as depth. I would like to see Jasper in some preseason games at right guard. If we do this, we are strong up the middle on offense and defense.

  18. I understand not wanting to praise a guy who by most accounts is a real !@#$, but let's be honest here. The guy's had a lot of success in a highly competetive zero sum game for a lot of years. He's not just real lucky, or else he's the luckiest guy in the world.

If you're looking for someone to hate on you should look for a loudmouth, self-aggrandizing, immature bag of vinegar and water who had his life status handed to him on a silver platter. Like Jim Irsay.

  19. Um, the Colts drafted Manning with the #1 overall pick. The Bills haven't had the #1 pick since Bruce Smith. And as bad as they have been, they rarely draft top 5 (like the Lions and Rams). They only had 3 top 5 picks since the 80s. The Bills are average to slightly below average, which is probably worse.

But my main point is that if you get a franchise QB, everything else falls into place. If Luck is as good as people make him out to be, does that mean the new Colts' GM (whatever his name is), is some kind of genius? Or does it mean he just inherited a great situation? For example if the Bills were as awful as the Colts were this season, would Nix be a genius for drafting Luck?

If we have the run that the Colts did with Manning, then yes. Don't forget there was alot of debate over Manning and Leaf, he picked the right one.The Bill rarely drafted in the top 5, but the Colts almost always drafted in the late 20's and still fielded a quality team for a long time undr Polian.Even if we base Polian on only 2 desicions in his career as a GM (Manning over Leaf, and Edjeran James Vs. Ricky Williams) he came off as a genius, like him or not.

  20. If the Bills had the luxury of picking Manning #1 overall and the Colts ended up with a guy like JP Losman, how does that trend work?

For as bad as the Bills drafted, they still won 6 to 7 games starting Losman and Edwards at QB. Do you honestly think that they are superior to Curtis Painter?

To me the point is Polian does a hell of a job with talent desicions and building a team. The Bills have had the luxury of having high draft picks for what, 10-11 years? We have done squat with them. Do you think we would be in this position if Polian was running things in Buff for those drafts? Polian doesn't seem to "end up" with guys like Losman or Edwards.

For as bad as the Bills drafted, they still won 6 to 7 games starting Losman and Edwards at QB. Do you honestly think that they are superior to Curtis Painter?

Maybe I am Dopey but, what ?!?! Painter was brought in as a Backup to a very durable HOF QB, he wasn't supposed to be a savior. Polian did the right thing here. As for the Bills, we drafted these guys thinking they would lead our team to the playoffs. Big difference. Painter wasn't expected to carry the Colts, unlike Losman and Edwards. If Polian were looking for a franchise QB, he wouldn't be looking at Painter. If he was still here, I don't think we would have wasted all of those high picks, or drafted guys like Losman or Edwards. He turned the Bills, Panthers and Colts into winners. Franchises that were pretty much in the dumps when he arrived, and "Bam" now they're winners. "till he leaves, that is.

  21. Without a doubt you keep him, and go into camp with Florence, McGee, Williams, McKelvin, Corner, Rogers, +1 Mid-rounder, +1 or 2 camp fodder signings.

Let them fight for the positions. Even if you keep 6, theyre not all going to make it through the entire season. McGee might not even make it out of camp!

Dont bother signing any Free Agent starters at CB. Put the money towards Stevie, WRs, Pass Rush, and signing our own guys that need extensions.

Overrated? By who? Guy is the #1 whipping boy on this site.

There is no reason to cut him; who are they going to get that's better?

I really like McGee as a CB, I think he is better than Florence...BUT he is unfortunately made of glass, and he is only getting older. Florence struggled at times last year (as did the entire secondary), but no CB is ever going to have an easy time without a pass rush. I still believe Florence is a starting quality CB in the NFL, and we will need to have a guy like that if we are even considering relying on McGee to stay healthy.

Regardless of cost, I think we should dump McKelvin, unless we make him our full time PR/KR. As a CB, he just isn't good. He has speed and can stay with a guy,but is clueless on how to play the ball. This leads to countless penalties, and receivers catching the ball over his head with regularity. He is usually in good position, but almost never actually makes the play. Opposing QB's love seeing him on the field, they will throw at him every time...

Justin Rogers showed some ability (almost entirely kick return related), in his very tiny amount of playing time as an NFL CB (Nickle and Dime only) he had a couple of good plays, and also got burned on a few plays. It might be reasonable to hope he get grab the dime or maybe nickle spot on this team, but to expect him to step in as a starter is probably wishful thinking.

Florence is a good, proven starting CB in the NFL. Did he have trouble last year? Yeah, but when the opposing QB has 10 seconds to pull the trigger on every play, he doesn't have much of a chance. Rogers won't fix that problem.
