and every year the cap goes up.  The key is to not overpay or heavily back load a contract

Okay. But the cap will go up regardless. If we just pay our guys this year, that would maximize our cap space in 2019 and beyond. I would still release Tyrod because we can't have him lingering around as we try to move on. But other than that I wouldn't restructure anyone.

This is true.  What players do you want to keep another 2 to 5 years?   Those are the ones I would target.

I understand. Still, even if you only restructure guys you plan to keep, while they will be cheaper this year, they will be more expensive towards the cap in the other years.

  3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that while restructuring contracts frees up cap room this year, it pushes those costs onto subsequent years. Beane has voiced opposition to this tactic several times, even using the phrase "kicking the can down the road." It sounds like one of his major goals has been to fix the teams' cap situation by paying out our expensive contracts as soon as possible. 2018 would be a prime year to do that.

First off, I don't think that starting him at an away game was the best decision, Plus, he got no help from the offensive line. On at least a couple of the interceptions he was hit as he was releasing the ball.

Peterman was clearly brought in because Taylor wasn't throwing the ball downfield. Consequently he overcompensated and should have the eaten the ball in a couple of cases where he tried to make plays.

I'll reserve judgment on Peterman until the Bills strengthen the offensive line.

Peterman was "brought in" because he was the next highest player on their draft board when that pick came up. As with any 5th round pick he had positive and negative qualities. They are not committed to him in any way. He's a low risk, moderate reward investment.

At the time he was drafted, they most likely viewed him as having a 25% chance to develop into a competent backup. 5% chance to develop into a competent starter. 70% chance to completely bust. Bad odds but whatever, it's the 5th round.

The concept that I think a lot of people are struggling to comprehend is that those odds haven't changed very much even after what we saw this season. He struggled in extremely brief appearances as a rookie on a poorly schemed offense, which was expected. So it doesn't move the needle. They'll keep him around but they won't gift him anything. If he develops into something useful, great. If not, doesn't matter.

  5. Hate pundits suddenly mocking so many interior OL to the Bills on account of the Wood situation. As if rational FOs are really that reactionary and wouldn't have other contingencies to explore. So lazy. Worst part is that I bet they think to themselves that it makes them look insightful and informed.

  6. People will clamor for QB, but unless we trade up, we're not getting Rosen, Mayfield, or Darnold. Jackson and Rudolph are flawed table scraps, and we should resist feeling pressured to take them at 21. Do not draft Allen under any circumstances. Lauletta and White are interesting ideas in the 2nd or 3rd round. Trading a 4th to Cleveland for Kizer after they get their guy at #1 would be an efficient buy-low.

Anyway, assuming no trade up, DT/DT is a fine idea. It's our biggest non-QB need by far. Dareus traded, Kyle old/maybe retiring. Rest of the unit were all graded outside the top-100 DTs in the league. It's a ghastly situation. We absolutely need to bring in multiple guys whether it's through draft, trade, FA, or a combination.

  7. Kudos on the effort to set this up, but unfortunately these metrics are too limited and the thresholds are too arbitrary. Evaluators broadly agree that Allen, while having some potential, also has an insane amount of red flags. Probably the most bust-worrisome prospect in years. So I would view any analysis that casts him as the relatively safe option as fairly suspect.

Here is my post Senior Bowl Mock Draft. I can see Mcbean doing something like this depending on what they can do in free agency.

1st Rnd - DT Vita Vea, Washington

1st Rnd - DT Harrison Phillips, Stanford

2nd Rnd - C Billy Price, Ohio State

2nd Rnd - QB Kyle Lauletta, Richmond

    3rd Rnd - G Will Hernandez, UTEP

4th Rnd - RB Kalen Ballage, Arizona State

    5th Rnd - BPA

    5th Rnd - BPA

DT/DT will stir the pot but is fine. Can't argue with the need. I think you're going overboard with the interior OL though. Wood retiring won't make that big a difference. Groy is good. Hernandez is probably gone in the 2nd round anyway. Not sure if we'll get your specific RB but there are an assload of RBs this year. Getting one in the 4th or 5th round will be a good idea.

This selection of picks should be mocked with two DTs in the first and a weak armed project QB in the 2nd.  Wouldn't be a wise way to expend draft capital IMO.

Strongly disagree. DT/DT at 21/22 isn't a bad idea at all. Dareus traded, Kyle old/retiring, rest of the guys are all graded outside the top-100 in the league. It would actually be a very Carolina-esque thing to do. Wouldn't be surprised at all.

And "Weak armed project QB" is a slanderous description of Lauletta. His arm is fine. He also happens to be accurate and intelligent and throws with great anticipation. On many lists he will climb over the flawed table scraps (Jackson, Rudolph) that Bills fans have been debating picking at 21. He would be an excellent 2nd round pick if we don't manage to trade up to the top-5 for Rosen/Darnold/Mayfield.

Sorry to say this is one of the worst posts I've ever seen from you.

Because players and teams come out on fire all the time and then taper off as the season progresses.  Is it really that hard to understand?  A lot of ppl said Guice was the better back and was going to show it this year.  How'd that play out.  Bottom line is you don't know until they play the games.  Cook hasn't done enough to say he's better than anyone in the NFL at this point.   That's what I'm trying to tell you.

You're the one that's having difficulty understanding. This isn't a resume comparison. The fact that Fournette played more games or had more total stats this season is meaningless in the context of a debate over whether he or Cook or any other RB is superior and would be the preferable RB to own going forward in a vacuum. This is not a debate over who had the better 2017 season.

It's not like 4 NFL games are the only thing we have to go on. College career still plays a huge factor in projecting such young players going forward. For incoming rookies, it's the only thing to go on, and it's plenty. That's how we can have a debate right now on, for example, whether Saquon Barkley might or might not be better than Alvin Kamara or Lesean McCoy. Or yes, whether or not Guice might or might not be better than Fournette.

I'm not sure where you're getting your information on that, btw. Guice is 2.5 years younger than Fournette, and was legitimately the better RB when they were on the same team two years ago, and had a great year this year. Based on Fournette's poor receiving skills, I'd give Guice better than 50/50 odds to be the better NFL player.

  11. 15 minutes ago, DallasMac said:

He had 2 tds in 4 games and broke a 100 yds once.  I'm a big Cook fan but to say he's better than Fournette when he only played 4 games is a little ridiculous.

Why would the fact that he played four games be a factor in whether or not someone thinks he is better? For example almost everyone thinks that Saquon Barkley is better. And he's played zero NFL games. This isn't the same as arguing over who has the greater resume.

I don't see what Mahomes did to warrant moving up while Fourtnette lead his team to an unexpected championship game performance and is moved out of the top 5.

Fournette did not "lead" his team anywhere. He's marginally better than Yeldon. Not even a top-3 RB in his own draft class (Kamara, Hunt, Cook), let alone a top-10 RB in the league as some people seem to think. Jacksonville's defense carried them to the AFCCG. Drafting Fournette instead of a QB was a catastrophic mistake that is currently being masked by one season of unsustainable success. Just imagining the state their franchise would be in with Watson or Mahomes instead of Fournette should make Jaguar fans cry.

  13. You know I'm all for drafting a QB this year. But if anything this year's crop of semifinalists proves the opposite of what everyone has been saying about needing an elite QB. The Jaguars, Vikings, and Eagles just won at least one playoff game with Bortles, Keenum, and Foles, respectively.

Other semifinalist is obviously the Pats, but having the best QB/Coach combo is basically an uncopiable blueprint.

I don't know who is going to win and what you say is certainly possible (as well as a big Canes win).  Nevertheless, I was at the game in South Bend last year.  ND took an early lead.  The Canes came back and should have won. In the end, ND won in a close game.

This year's game is not in South Bend, but is here in Miami.  I can tell you that the fans have not been as excited about this team since the early 2000's when the program was elite.  I fully expect a huge and loud Miami crowd (there also will be ND fans as there always are around the country).

In addition to it being a home game for UM, this year's team is better than the one that almost beat ND last year in South Bend.

Again, I will be there as a UM fan.  I don't know who will win, but I really got to believe that, going into the game,  UM has has at least as much of a chance to beat ND as the other way around.  We shall see.

ND has obviously improved significantly over last year as well.

  15. 1. DT - Kyle should retire soon, Dareus traded, neither were getting much interior pass rush anyway. Should probably draft two of these, TBH.

    2. LB - Lorenzo should retire soon. Humber and Milano are nice but we really shoudn't continue to try and get away with so little investment in this position.

    3. G - Richie should retire soon. Our running game hasn't been able to do much vs good defenses this year, anyway.

    4. OT - See above.

    5. QB - Tyrod is under contract next year and is doing fine, but I'm still sure that the regime views him as an interim.

    6. RB - McCoy backup/heir.

    7. CB? - Depends on in Gaines is resigned.

    8. WR? - Depends on if Matthews is resigned.

    9. TE? - Depends on how they view Clay's health going forward.

  16.

I wasn't a tanker........prior to the Watkins trade I figured this team could very conceivably win 10-11 games.........they greatly underachieved under Rex.

But just like with Jauron.......nobody else in the league is building their team like this for a reason...........it wasn't sustainable then so there certainly is reason to think it probably won't be now.

Strange mentality. There has never been any evidence that Watkins represented a huge delta in terms of expected wins.

But just like with Jauron.......nobody else in the league is building their team like this for a reason...........it wasn't sustainable then so there certainly is reason to think it probably won't be now.

Every team that doesn't have an elite franchise QB is forced to build "this way." But in any case, we haven't yet begun to see how the new regime will build the team. We aren't supposed to be good yet. This year was supposed to be about scheme/culture installation, resource accumulation, and self-scouting to determine how best to use said resources. McD & co. have the team playing well several years ahead of schedule. Darn...

  17. 1 - Tyrod - I start with Tyrod because I took him to task last week. This may have been his best game this season as I really can't point out many mistakes he made. All QB's miss throws, so I'm not going to nitpick. What made the game so impressive was how many times he extended plays by STAYING IN THE POCKET. He didn't rush today at all, made defenders miss him in the backfield, and kept his eyes downfield. The Raiders kept safeties deep most of the game, and took away the deep ball, which he was happy to take the underneath routes. I was shocked to see that he threw for under 200 yards. This was a complete game by TT and I think we can end the discussion about him throwing over the middle of the field. Almost all of his 1st quarter completions came that way. Just a great game this week and showed the difference between efficient with low stats and Carr's high stats and a loss

2 - Mack - I'm absolutely shocked that I never really heard his name. I think there was one holding penalty against him, but that's it. We absolutely shut him down and Mills gets a TON of credit. Mack is a gamechanger and was ineffective all around. Great job by Frazier, MIlls, and the whole line.

3 - Milano - Two weeks in a row the rookie makes a difference. He contributed to 10 points and really blew the game open with his play. I know McDermott said that Humber would be the starter when he gets back, but I don't know anymore. I'm impressed by his instincts, positioning, and the kid is just FAST. Loving this kid more and more this week.

4 - So we found our own direction

    Made our way to everyone

And now we look back on every misstep

And wonder how we got it done

    I'm bringin it home

5 - Frazier's Bend but Don't Break - Outside of the two touchdown drives, this defense did a fantastic job today. They gave up the yards, but not the points. I am surprised by the end result since we had ABSOLUTELY NO PASS RUSH, but still got it done. To give Carr that much time, for the Raiders to have those weapons, and to only give up 14 points...hats off. I'm still worried about the Brady's who find their way into the endzone, but this defense is finding new ways to win every week.

6 - Linebackers - These guys are getting their own shout out, even after mentioning Milano. These guys are playing so fast, getting their hands on balls, and just always seem to be in the right place. I've taken issue with our soft zone in the middle, but today was different. These guys clogged passing lanes, tipped passes, and just controlled the middle of the field. I'm really impressed with this unit as they are slowly becoming one of the strongest parts of the D.

7 - Refs - I don't even want to give them attention, but what was that? That offensive PI on Matthews was a joke in the first quarter and there were just way too many iffy calls for my liking. With that, I'm giving props to the offense for overcoming a lot of 2nd and 20's and not letting the Ref's beat them. We typically bend in those situations and lose the game, but not this team. Are we starting to Billieve yet?

8 - DB's - How impressive is it that we overall shut down Crabtree and Cooper, especially with Gaines out? They got some catches and big plays, but most of the yardage came from TE's and dump offs. I'm surprised at the amount of man coverage we are playing, but we got it done. And is Hyde not one of the best FA pickups we've had in a while? Another guy who just keeps being in the right place at the right time. Ignore the stats guys, this unit got it done.

9 - McDermott - I was surprised by the decision to go for it on 4th and goal. Maybe it's the BBFS in me, but I want the definite 16 point lead, but I'm happy to be wrong. His one challenge didn't make much sense to me, but other than that, he seemed to push all the right buttons. No one had us at 5-2 and these guys seem bought in. We just traded away our highest paid player, continued the old regime turnover, and these guys keep showing up for him. This would be a lot worse if we were losing. Either way, it's hard to not buy into the process right now. However, at 5-2, we've been here before......

10 - Billiever? - Here we are again, 5-2. I think this is the 4th time in our playoff drought? (I'm not looking it up, remember?) We go into NY on Thursday with a chance to go 6-2 for the first time since 93? Again, probably the BBFS talking, but I'm nervous. I'm so used to getting my hopes up about this team only to get heartbroken. The Jets aren't the pushovers they were in week 1. We have a lot of good things going on right now, but I wonder when the 300+ passing yards per game given up, we stop getting 3+ turnovers, and our resilience against penalties go away. I hate that my brain goes there, but it's what they've done to me. I think 6-2 makes me Billieve; makes me think it's different. I want to love again McDermott, help me.

*Bonus - Tolbert - I give him a lot of crap, but he was utilized perfectly today. He got some crucial 3rd down conversions in a pound the rock fashion. Two weeks in a row this guy has looked good in our offense. Credit where credit is due

Great win guys! I'm loving it so far and look forward to seeing where these wagons go.

    Go Bills!

Tyrod played great for sure. Was really impressed with him staying in the pocket and delivering. Scrambling to buy time to pass, not looking to run hardly at all. He's looking really comfortable back there. Very proud of him.

Genuinely shocked about Mills. Sometimes he plays so bad. Last year he was one of the primary whipping boys. Not even sure how to explain it. Very pleased with Milano as well. Very low expectations for a smallish late-round LB. He's stepping right up.

We didn't have any sacks, but Carr had a lot to do with that. Lowest TTP in the league, I think. DBs held the line for sure. White is still on track for DROY.
