  1. 15-17 in the NFL.

Nick Saban might just be the greatest college coach that ever lived. In the NFL he is just a guy.

He knows that. He is not coming back.

Better comparison may be Pete Carroll. Sucked as an nfl coach for the pats, perfected his craft in college and dominated for years, then returned to nfl and did very well.

Marrone comparison is asinine as he has never dominated at anything. Just took a mediocre college team and made them an average to above average college team. Did the same thing with the bills.

  2. In all fairness, Buddy Nix was caught on tape saying "need a QB this year...bad year to need a QB" or something to that effect when he thought he was talking to an opposing GM or something, so I think even he knew that there were no slam dunks in that year's draft. (see below). In hindsight, maybe it would have been smarter to wait, but I think Buddy knew he was trying to get out so wanted to take a flyer on someone he thought could be the guy. Turns out he was wrong, and maybe the kid will improve, but its gonna take a while and his ceiling drops with every mediocre start.

  3. The truth is:

    Early expectations were too high.

Taylor is new. McCoy and Williams are new. Harvin and Clay are new. Ryan and Roman and Thurman are new.

Things are going in a good direction. There's a good core of players on this team, and some good young talent.

They just aren't ready to be a playoff level team yet. They will look great some weeks, and leave you scratching your head other weeks. Everyone wanted them to be a top AFC contender right out of the gate, and those expectations were unrealistic. It takes time for all these new pieces to come together and gel.

They will be OK in the long run. The upcoming schedule is favorable. If they can stay at .500 through the growing pains they will be in good shape for a late WC run, and even if it doesn't happen this year they are building something better than what they've had for the last decade.

Agree with your premise, disagree with your conclusion. I think that this is a new team that needs to find its way, but that by the end of the season, they will definitely be playoff caliber (and hopefully in playoff contention). There is a ton of talent, they just need to learn to gel. Hell McCoy wasn't even around in the preseason and now he's out. Roman's gotta learn how to call plays for this team, not ones he's worked for in the past. Rex needs to know what attitude gives he and his team the best chance to win, regardless of bravado. I don't see all of that taking a full season.

The reason I feel this is different, is that when we were clicking (albeit against bad teams), the plays we were executing we on a different level. They were intricate and powerful. And the plays I saw our players make were ones made by stars. Not the ryan fitzpatrick or doug flute scrappy type of plays, but real prime time NFL premium plays, and all types, short and long distance runs, and short, mid and long range passes. They have it all. They just need to learn how to click so that every thing is second nature, and they need to learn how to take on the winner's mentality.

Ok, fine that may take a full season, but I think we can get to the playoffs before everything is in perfect place. Cause when it is...

    SUPERBOWL, BABY!!

  4. Watching the today show this morning at 6:30 AM Chicago time, they cut to the outside shot and my ears are drawn to the crowd where there are a critical mass singing... hey -ey -ey -ey, Let's go buffalo.

Love that we are playing in buffalo, yet someone in New York City still took time to denigrate Giants country with our shout song.

Well played, bills fans, whoever you may be.

  5. Idiotic article. You're only an avid fan if you're "willing to shell out thousands of dollars for tickets". About the most asinine statement I've ever read. Come to Lincoln Station in Chicago for the first game of the season and tell me that there aren't avid Bills fans there. It will be wall to wall Bills jerseys!

    .

Solid Bills Backers of Chicago plug! Now someone talk about how only an amazing fan base would inspire a bunch of fans in Chicago to start the entertaining and informed Bills and Beers podcast!!

    (Attention whore)

Also, I puke on that article.

  6. Aaaaahhh. Two pages with only one mention of the bills. Oh well, I guess it was inevitable. Is it possible to shut down my own thread?

Ok, one last ditch effort to make it about the bills again. Everyone tell me what u think this offseason would have been like with (bills related):

    A. Jon BonJovi

    B. Trump

Who would have been the coach, what would the front office and roster look like, what media attention would we be getting (would it be bad or good), would you still be a fan?

    I'll go first

    A. JBJ would play it cool in the first offseason and promise he was all about buffalo despite his Toronto ties, would hire a knowledgable football czar, who would decide Whaley/Brandon fate. Probably would have either promoted schwarz or ended up with a offensive coordinator as our coach... Media and attention would be positive and there would be a bunch new music events planned at the Ralph not to mention a bunch of celebrity rockers making cameos at training camp. Team would Move in 5-6 years to outrage and lawsuits. I would still be a fan until the move.

    B. Trump - would wipe the entire front office and most of the offensive roster clean. Would hire an exec type to be GM and football czar. That person in turn Would hire an old school name like shannahan who would come with plenty of baggage but that he could sell to the fan base. Don't think he would be willing to take a chance on a coordinator or someone who was not already famous; This is probably for the best since both he and his football czar can not really evaluate football talent. He would still run for president. Tons of media attention. Mostly negative as he becomes more controversial. Many bills fans would finally have the push they needed to leave the bills forever as they would not be able to recognize the team they once loved. In 5-6 years we would move and people will be mostly happy they are gone. I would not be a fan after one season.

    Ok. Ur turn.

  7. This is getting close to heading to PPP. Already killed a couple posts, but the topic IS very Bills related as pertains to how drastically different everything would be during this drastically different off-season.

Please do your best to keep political slants away while chiming in on this interesting thread.

    Thanks.

Thanks for seeing it that way. It was my intention to keep it bills focused although I recognize that is difficult given the close relation of the subject matter to politics. Anyways, if it gets too political, feel free to shut it down, I will not be offended.

  8. I wonder if a poll was made between only him and Jon Bon Jovi who the majority of Bills fans would rather have seen (or not seen) end up with the team. At the end of the day I guess most would rather have a team constantly surrounded by controversy than risk having no team at all but it might be close.

I shudder at the thought of those two options. It brings up a good point though. We have definitely enjoyed the media attention this year, and we would have gotten as much if not more has trump bought the bills. But it would likely only be peripherally related to actual football.

  9. wow how to not make this political

Yeah, I knew it would take that turn, but I was more focusing on how much of a distraction it would have been from an awesome

bills offseason. Then again, would the bills still have hired Rex? Retained Whaley and Brandon? Seems like it would have been a major house cleaning so he could build it in his image. I feel Rex would have been a no because trump would not want someone to outshine him on the podium.

All that and THEN the presidential run stuff would have started. Would have been a very different summer for sure.

how many games would be off the air if he were the owner?

Which network cancelled Trump run shows?

    Nbc

  10. Could you guys imagine if trump was our current owner? Not intending this to turn into a political discussion, but could you imagine how ridiculous it would be if the owner of the Bills was fighting with nbc, telemundo and getting into Twitter wars and making controversial outlandish statements about China and Mexico while trying to run for president?!

Whether u agree with his politics or not, it would be a huge distraction away from Bills football.

So happy our billionaire owner can just focus on building Buffalo and maintaining his empire without his other interests being a huge distraction and potentially alienating or turning off parts of our fan base.

  11.

    The Watkins trade netted McCoy?

    Seriously?

That's funny, I thought that they traded Alonso for McCoy. Guess I don't know what I'm talking about.

Yeah you definitely don't. The trade being referenced in the post you quoted IS the Alonso for McCoy trade. You think McCoy is critical to a 11 win season but you list the trade which got him as an example of a FO misstep.

  12. This may be sick but ..............................

After we lost the first Super Bowl and everybody was gathered downtown cheering for Scott Norwood, and him getting emotional at the podium.

Yeah I KNOW we lost .... and I still cringe when somebody says either wide or right, but that was the moment that I was proudest to call myself a Bills fan.

I will NEVER forget that moment. It made me understand what it meant to love a team beyond its wins and loses. Also taught me that we are the best fans in the world.

  13. Watch the clock nervously from 9am EST on....making sure I leave my house at no later than 12:30 to get to my friend's to put the game on there on his 2nd big screen. (Bengals on the main screen).

Make amazing fat-bastard lunches, drink for 3 hours, watch RedZone channel also.

Go home and either sulk or be happy for the rest of the week until next Sunday.

Rinse and repeat 16 times a year.

Don't u mean 19 times a year? Oh wait we were talking about rituals you did BEFOR this year

  14. The sad thing is, it appears as though Marrone didn't hold much back in the preseason if you go by what his offense looked like in the regular season. And don't forget how that dipsh** seemed more pissed after losing one of those preseason games (can't recall which) than he did at any point in the real season.

I'm so glad he's not the coach here anymore. What an unlikable douche.

    how do you really feel?
