  2. The Bills will be anxious to put the performance in their preseason opener last week behind them with an improved outing against the Colts Thursday night in Toronto (Kickoff 7:30 pm). After a game in which there were big plays surrendered, pre-snap penalties and turnovers Buffalo’s head coach wants tighter execution.

“We’re still in the process of crawling before you walk, walk before you run,” said Chan Gailey. “We’re still in the crawl-walk stage of installation and putting in what we’re trying to get done here. It’s a process, it’s not going to happen (quickly). And if you think that in the first game, you’re going to go out there and look like a million bucks, no (you’re not going to).

“There were some positives to take out of the first game so I’m looking forward to seeing if we can take the next step. That’s the goal, to take the next step.”

    Playing time

Buffalo’s starters on offense and defense are expected to see slightly more time than they did in the first preseason game, which in many cases was a quarter and a half. Expected to see the most work is top draft pick C.J. Spiller.

With top backs Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch out with injuries, Spiller will get the lion’s share of the work out of Buffalo’s backfield Thursday night.

“It is what it is. You can’t control that,” Gailey said. “I hate it happening to both of them for their sake and for our team’s sake. It’s an opportunity for someone else to show what they can do, and it gives a great opportunity to take a good look at C.J. He missed some camp anyway so this is a way for him to get some extra reps.”

Spiller maintains he’s ready to take on a greater rushing load.

“I just have to be ready with however many reps that I’m getting. It doesn’t matter to me if I have to play the whole game I will,” Spiller said. “It’s football. It’s what I love to do. I haven’t talked to them about how many (reps) I’m going to take. I’ve just got to prepare myself as if I’ll play the whole game.”

Spiller will be followed in the running back rotation by Chad Simpson, Joique Bell and newcomer Andre Anderson, who signed on Monday.

    QB rotation

In the first preseason game Ryan Fitzpatrick was the first quarterback in after Trent Edwards’ night was over against Washington, while Brian Brohm did not make an appearance. Again Indianapolis Thursday night, Brohm will be the first quarterback in after Edwards.

“Trent will start and then we’ll put Brian Brohm in the game and then if there’s some snaps left, Levi Brown will play,” said Gailey. “Fitz (Ryan Fitzpatrick) won’t play in this one. He played last week and Brian didn’t play. And we thought, instead of trying to get Fitzpatrick a few plays, Brohm a few plays, Levi Brown a few plays, it was better to just sit one and let the other two guys play and see where it goes from there. And let a guy have an extended playing time on the field.”

“It’s going to be fun to get out there and get on the field in live action,” said Brohm. “It’s going to be my first game action of the year, so it’s always good to get out there and get that first throw under your belt and hopefully be able to get in a good rhythm and hopefully execute all the things we’ve been practicing.”

    Lineup changes

Thursday night could be the first time this preseason that the projected starting offensive line takes the field as one unit. Left tackle Demetrius Bell and right guard Eric Wood are expected to see their first live action coming off lengthy knee and leg rehabilitations in the offseason.

“I probably will (play)," said Wood. "I’d imagine I’ll get some playing time this week. I don’t know how much it’ll be and you know we’re still just taking it slow. We’ve got a lot of time before Miami. We’ll do what’s necessary this week. I’m excited to get back out on the field and play against somebody with a different jersey. It may not be too much, it may be a bunch. I’m up for whatever and I’ll let coach make that decision.”

Right tackle Cornell Green is the only question mark heading into the game. He returned to practice on Monday after suffering a right knee injury the week before, but Gailey said he'll be a game day decision.

Buffalo may also have a few veterans on the defensive side of the ball back in the lineup even if it is only for a handful of plays.

  3. If there is a reason to dig into your pocket book and shell out some cash for a Bills exhibition game, his name is C.J. Spiller.

Fortunately for Toronto football fans, not only will they see Spiller in action, should they choose to head down to the Rogers Centre tonight, they’ll see a whole lot more than they normally would.

Spiller, the man the Bills used their first-round pick on, ninth overall, jumps into the role of starting running back with both Marshawn Lynch (ankle) and Fred Jackson (hand) hurt in the Bills’ first pre-season game against Washington.

“It’s awful but it’s a good opportunity for me to step up and show the coaches what I can do,” Spiller said of Thursday’s tilt against the Indianapolis Colts. “I’ve got to try to gain their confidence and contribute to the offence.”

    Dynamics

Spiller comes with a college resume that suggests he has the chance to be a dynamic NFL player.

In his senior year at Clemson, Spiller rushed for more than 1,200 yards, added 500 yards in receptions and found the end zone 16 times.

He was a unanimous choice as an ACC all-American and was named ACC player of the year.

How all of that translates to the NFL game, not even Spiller is sure yet, but he does know he is getting a rare opportunity to start in just his second time on the field against NFL competition.

“Of course, you want to go out and prove everyone wrong,” Spiller said on Wednesday. “But that’s not my mindset. I’ve done all that in college. I proved that I can carry the ball my last year in college and still be durable throughout the game. Everybody wants to talk about this being the NFL but, at the end of the day, it’s still football. This is my time to step up and try to get through the pre-season and get comfortable in the NFL.”

  4. Brian Brohm gets his best chance to push for the Buffalo Bills' starting quarterback job tonight in Toronto.

Brohm is scheduled to get the majority of the snaps as the No. 2 quarterback when the Bills face the Indianapolis Colts in the second exhibition game of the summer at the Rogers Centre.

If Brohm has any chance to weaken Trent Edwards' hold on the starting job, he needs to have a good showing.

"I'm excited to be on the field, get out there with the first live action of the season for me," Brohm said.

It has been a long wait for Brohm, who showed up in Orchard Park in mid-March to start preparing for the pivotal third season of his pro career. He did not play in the exhibition opener against Washington last Friday because Ryan Fitzpatrick got an extended look after Edwards started. Fitzpatrick, who has been alternating with Brohm as the No. 2 since training camp began, is scheduled to sit out tonight.

"I feel like I'm ready," Brohm said. "I feel like we've had OTAs, we've had mini-camps, we've gone all through training camp. I feel good about the offense. I feel comfortable about where I'm at. I just need to put it all together in a game atmosphere."

  5. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/nhl/...anley-cup_N.htm

It's slow and my cousin was quoted in this article so I am posting it. The kid that had the winning shot for the cup last year is from B-low and he brought the cup to the falls. My cousin is Tom Proctor and he makes signs for the park service at the falls and made one for Kane... Kane also gave him a signed jersey for my second cousin... they said he is a nice guy.

He is a nice guy but don't get in a cab with him, LOL.

  6. The bad news didn’t get any better at the receiver position for the Bills. In Tuesday’s practice, rookie receiver David Nelsonappeared to roll his ankle when he tried to make a cut inside just after making a reception in red zone work and went down in a heap.

After being tended to by athletic trainers for several minutes, he was carted off the field.

“It doesn’t look good, but I don’t think it’s a long term (thing),” said Gailey. “The question is whether he’ll get back for the first of the season or not. It’s tough on him because he had done such a good job of working hard. He had missed some time and then made it up and had been doing a good job in that respect so I hate it for him.”

Buffalo just added free agent receiver Aaron Rhea to the roster on Monday. With James Hardy not expected to play Thursday night, the Bills will once again go into the preseason game with just seven wideouts.

  7. NIGHT PRACTICE NOTES

Buffalo’s night practice concluded with some good news as head coach Chan Gailey revealed that Marshawn Lynch’s ankle injury may not take as long to heal as first believed.

“I think it’s not a major injury by any stretch of the imagination and I would think he could be back by the last preseason game,” said Gailey. “That’s what we’re hoping anyway.”

Buffalo’s last preseason game is Sept. 2nd at Detroit and is just 17 days away. Lynch hasn’t been forced to stay off the ankle as he was standing on the sidelines watching practice for both the morning and evening sessions Monday.
