  1. The problem with Spikes is that he is a base defense guy at this point. Calling him a 2 down LBer is not accurate. If the offense comes out with anyone in the slot, regardless of down, Spikes goes to the sideline. With teams spending more time in the nickel than their base, Spikes is relegated to role playing no matter what team he'll play for. Even in the base D, he struggles in coverage.

  2.

Sounds great huh? Let me continue....

Then the Bills continue for a few seasons with crap offenses, eking their way into the playoffs, but never having a high enough pick to get an elite QB. After a few of these type of seasons, they fall off sharply. Finally in 2020, a new GM and coach select a "franchise" QB to lead a depleted roster of also-ran's.

I was right. You are an optimist.

  3. EJM starts, is injured sometime early in the season. Tyrod finishes the game with a nice comeback, and everyone wants him to start. So Tyrod starts for 2 games, craps the bed, and then Cassel finishes the season. The Bills go 11-5, get a Wildcard spot, beat up on a crappy WC team that snuck in from a crap division. Then the Bills play a regular (non-wildcard) playoff game, and lose because of a crap offense.

That sounds way better than the last 15 Januaries. You are pretty optimistic. Count me in on a playoff win!

  4. The more accurate QB will win. My money is on White Castle. However, if the Bills are running it effectively, that could put EJ in the driver's seat due to his mobility and the increased likelihood of man coverage outside with a single high safety. In those situations I would think that EJ would make some big plays. Perhaps enough to jump start his confidence. Castle will be better at the dink and dunk if the running game fails to show up. A little better than Orton I would imagine. The O-line still stinks.

  5. Miami is jumping through hoops for this Clay situation. At this point, I wouldn't mind it playing out where Miami pays top dollar to ultimately keep Clay. Clay is a good player, but if the alternative is that Doug Whaley has even more cash to play with after said fact, then I say great. I think he'll spend it wisely.

  6. The run game will give us lots of play action opportunities.

I agree with you though about the OL. You need that to have a dominating run game.

Exactly! Force defenders into the box, and if the run gets going, BANG, hit 'em deep and attack the seams off of PA. The best part about power running is the wear on the opponents D-line and LBers if they can't get off the field. Quicksand baby!

  7. I also enjoy the fact they decided to gloss over stealing Cordy Glenn in the 2nd- one of the best young LTs in the league. Also drafted Kiko Alonso in the 2nd who he turned into an a 2 time All Pro RB in his prime who leads the league in rushing over the past 5 seasons.

Found Kiko's replacement and one hell of a player in Nigel Bradham in the 4th round . Add in PReston Brown in the 3rd round & Kiko became very expendable.

Traded Kelvin Sheppard straight up for Jerry Hughes who had turned into one of the leagues best pass rusher

Starting RT Seantrell Henderson in the 7th round. Signed Brandon Spikes to turn one of the worst run d's into one of the best.

The quality of the acquisitions is undeniable, and Spring is almost here.

  8. Kiko for McCoy gets the Bills an excellent 26 year old running back with a 40 million contract, This seems like a good GM move.

but a better GM move would have been drafting Lev'on Bell in the second round instead of Kiko in the first place. This would give the Bills an excellent 23 year old running back with a 4 million contract, and lots more cap space for other players.

In truth in the 6 years Whaley has been with the organization the Bills have added four outstanding players. Mario Williams, whom they made the highest paid defensive player in the league. Marcell Dareus with the #3 overall pick in a draft where 9 of the top 15 players (including the first 7 picks) have all been outstanding players. Sammy Watkins, who used 2 #1 picks (and maybe missed on true franchise QBs in Teddy Bridgewater and Derek Carr). Lesean McCoy at a position that only that saw only 1 of the top 8 players at the position make the playoffs last year. (they already had the ninth highest paid in Spiller.

It really doesn't take incredible talent to overpay for top assets. The investment in draft picks and money in these four players, if the Bills don't make a deep playoff run in 2015, it should be considered a failure by the Bills front office, led by GM Whaley.

That's a lot of wind from someone who lacks a time machine.

  9. The Bills have enough talent on defense to not overpay anyone except perhaps Dareus. Dareus is defensive bedrock. Hughes is perhaps the 4th to 6th best player out of 11 starters. Over 9 million a year can be spent elsewhere and the defense could still improve. FA and the draft will yield some capable pass rushers to play opposite Mario that may not rush as well as Hughes, but may play the run better or drop into zones better. The addition of a stout 2-gapper will take pressure off of Hughes position as it is. Who will be the next Branch?
