  1. Recall who stole the Buffalo Braves. Still stinks. By the way, why is the NFL so against expanding?

The NFL's official position has been as follows:

    1. We want to return to the Los Angeles market.
    2. We want to have a team in London some day.
    3. We want our teams to stay in their existing markets.
    4. We do not want to expand.

Can't do all four. Wonder which position is BS?

Well technically they were traded owners with Boston to stop Boston from moving, so even though was buffalo that moved, it was Boston's owner that moved them, as NBA didn't want to loose that city but didn't mind loosing ours.

  2. I guess I'll take your guys' opinions because I don't want to watch that game again. If the coaches felt he was giving no effort, then they should bench him.

But the much bigger point is how Rex ruined one of the best defenses in the NFL.

My opinion on that is he took a team known for being able to rush just 4 linemen and consistently get pressure, and average linebacking core that wasn't asked to do too much, and changed their focus. The linebackers are not asked to rush cover and be the main disruptive force on the team, and the d-line is asked to create holes and keep the linebackers clean to be disruptive. Considering we don't exactly have elite linebackers he basically marginalized the strength of the defense and highlighted a weakness.

  3. The statement Roman made regarding Cassel's trade was very ambiguous. It's strange that after David Lee praised Cassel's presence in meetings, the team traded their backup QB (and only experienced veteran) for future a 2017 draft pick. It didn't seem like the coaching staff and front office were in lock step on that one.

As for Marrone, reports indicated he (perhaps abruptly) departed the draft room when Buffalo decided to move up in the 2014 draft to take Watkins.

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12118625/doug-marrone-did-not-approve-sammy-watkins-draft-day-trade-buffalo-bills

Marrone wasn't a good coach and notably didn't hire good offensive assistants. But his GM also didn't identify a QB who was ready to play, and only found an acceptable option late in the 2014 training camp. And I doubt the Bills sign Taylor in free agency if Rex isn't HC because, as we learned in the off-season, Whaley was selling Manuel to prospective HC candidates.

I disagree with the praising of someone by a coach as being sign of them not being on the same page. If your trying to get value for something, wouldn't you want to advertise that in a positive light? Why not have his coach's make positive remarks. Plus, while is nice to have a QB coaching fellow players, but would rather have the higher pick, and more work for the play with more upside myself.

Agree that they didn't have a QB that was ready to play, but was that completely Whaley's fault, or was it lack of QB Coach and coaching of players had a large part of reason?

  4. You mad bro? Is he tapping your mom or something? You couldn't have caught that ball with Cris Carter's hands. Save your rabble rousing for a week after a loss, youll find a better appetite for it.

Can understand his point, seems like one or two people trying to bash Sammy anytime mentioned on a thread, would be nice to be able to have a positive talk without all the mellow dramatic bashers jumping in.

  5. John that's fine but we have a slimmer learning curve. The rest of the team is built to win RIGHT NOW.

I'm not expecting him to be Brady. I'm expecting him to not take 3-5 seconds to deliver the ball. Anything over 3 isn't cool, and I counted at least 15 times where 3 was doing him a favor. Unacceptable.

So your looking for him to do nothing but short passes and dump offs or toss it up and hope the receiver wins on longer ones then. You do realize that it takes 3-4 seconds for mid/long routes to develop like deep in/outs and comebacks. Takes 4-5 seconds for double moves and post, flag type routes. If you want to make the other team not stack the box you either have to be like Brady and be extremely accurate and know exactly where all your receivers are and read the defense before the snap to make the quick throws, or be a west coast offense and abandon the run game mostly because they will be all up on the line.

Not saying there shouldn't have been some adjustments made due to the lack of time, but its tough to say if all of it was TT's fault of if the plays that were called took longer to develop than he had time wise. Considering how little experience he has, and how good their defense is at disguising coverages and confusing even all-pro QB's, I though that once he settled down and got used to the defense and what it was doing, he play surprisingly well.

  6. May be bit early for talking about how awesome offense is doing till they hit a better defense. New England lost a lot of talent on defense, Colts are known to be suspect on defense, and Jets have been struggling. Its not like we've hit a top defense that's been playing well yet. I do agree the offense is playing a lot better than many expected, but lets keep in mind the competition before start saying were one of the best on that side.

  7. Watkins needs to be a bigger part of the gameplan. He's the best player on the offense, and so far he's been a secondary player. If Atlanta can get the ball to Julio Jones and Manning can get it to OBJ, there have to be ways to get it to Watkins. That's on Roman.

It doesn't appear that Watkins and Taylor are completely comfortable with each others game yet. With Watkins missing so much of training camp recovering from hip surgery, and the 3 way competition for QB, they really haven't had a lot of time working together yet. It may take till mid season before they're completely comfortable knowing what the other will do in a given situation. Seems like Harvin has the most chemistry with Taylor at this point.

  8. We ever get a story on his lack of special teams participation? Did he ever get any reps in camp or anywhere? Was it a fail or a refusal to try on those units?

Was mentioned earlier that he did play some special teams plays in preseason. He either just didn't have the drive for it, cause special teams is as much about effort and desire as skill, or wasn't as good as the other options.

I question his ability to follow the plays designed and keep up with the playbooks myself. Watching some of film on him last year, didn't seem like he went to right hole often, and he sucked at pass blocking. So IMO, may not have just been the special teams play that killed him. May have been lack of ability to do more that just break off a big play once in awhile, but lack of being able to be a complete back.

  9. Why is boobie on this team and Fred not?

Fred doesn't play special teams, so wasn't directly competing with Boobie. If was on team he would have been the one not dressing as wouldn't be able to cover the special teams role.

We have to field 6 different special teams units. No matter what you think, we need enough competent special teams player to field all of those positions. Not all of them show up on stats sheets so its tough for people watching on TV or looking at stats to know whos doing their jobs well or whos just out there.

  10.

I can't say that they were all BS penalties or that they always go against us.

In some circs, I do have a feeling sometimes the refs are under orders "if you can with a call, keep the game interesting, let 'em back in it" For example, we were clearly holding on McCoy's TD run that got called back. That said, watch the Pats OL sometimes - they hold all day. And I wouldn't bet a plugged nickel there wasn't some holding by Indy that wasn't called.

Last but not least, I would like someone to explain the "running into the kicker" penalty on Dixon and the non-penalty on what looked like a very similar, but later with less excuse, take-down of our punter by Indy. Use small words and speak slowly when you do try to explain.

Think the main difference between the two, was the Bills player cleared his block and dove to try and block the punt, so was his own act the put him in the punters way. While the Colts player was blocked into his position, so isn't a penalty as was result of being blocked into the punters feet.

  11.

Its really amazing to see all of these little strategy moves that us fans would never think of, and that we havent seen from this team in decades. Whaley gets it. We have a FO that knows how to approach roster building strategy AND contract strategy. There's so much more that goes into building a winning team than just hitting on draft picks.

    In Doug I trust

The whole cash to cap thing was in the way for moves like this. Ralph didn't have the funds to do a lot of maneuvers like this and the large signing bonuses.

So you are saying it's not pure genius???

You are right on....a practice squad player that you can't activate until 4 weeks AFTER you need them is pretty much pointless.

It will be interesting to see if the league looks at this as a sham.......promoting a player to serve a suspension when he wasn't going to play anyway.....perhaps that is why they are trying to sell the idea that they promoted him to prevent them from losing him.

The salary is up to at least league minimum, even though its going to charity, so there is that. He is not a vested Vet, so isn't guaranteed for the year, but they do have to include the money that he's technically earning towards cap dollars. Think that is the only negative outside of exposing player to wavers to move him up.

  12. Throwing Darby to the wolves is probably what's best for his long-term development. But is it best for the Bills' chances of making the playoffs? McKlevin will presumably be back by midseason. I can't help thinking we'd be better served taking a more short-term perspective here.

That's assuming that he's happy with McKelvin, he may be grooming Darby cause not convinced in what we have already can take us to next level, and he is seeing if Darby may be the answer while has the opportunity.

  13. From everything I have heard, when was running normal defences in camp he was doing well. It really only was during the games where he was isolated that he really struggled. Do expect him to have some issues, as is a rookie 2nd rounder in his first game, but dont see him as a huge liability.

  14. Notice he didn't impress him with his speed, cutting ability or nose for the goal line.

His tremendous work ethic and passion are what got him over the hump and to play for so long, and no one should marvel that it's impressive to anyone getting a first hand look.

You just don't need a 2.7million dollar third down back when you have the stable of backs they have.

Think the last line is the key. That and the fact has been injured a lot last few years, and this training camp. When have higher dollar against cap, and are likely in downward spiral due to age and coming off of a down year. I hate to see Fred go but think was right decision.
