  1. Peter King had a nice writeup on the bills in his Monday Morning QB column.. pretty good read.

Doug Marrone did what he had to do.

Doug Marrone knows he got his head-coaching job in Buffalo in large part due to the success he had in turning around the Syracuse program. And the player who contributed the most to that success was Marrone's quarterback Ryan Nassib. We all know what happened now: Buffalo general manager Buddy Nix and Marrone (and the 33-year-old offensive coordinator he brought from Syracuse, Nathaniel Hackett, to a lesser extent) studied the quarterbacks in this spring's flawed quarterback market, knowing the Bills would likely pick one high in the draft ... and they chose Florida State's E.J. Manuel over Nassib.

Nix has the final personnel say in the traditional general manager/coach relationship in Buffalo. But I'm also told it wouldn't have mattered who had the last call in picking the quarterback in Buffalo: Nix and Marrone both judged Manuel the best quarterback in the crop. Buffalo traded from No. 8 t in the first round to No. 16, picked Manuel at 16, and stashed an extra second-round pick in the process.

  2. You need to reel if in a little here. First off the Bills don't even plan to start EJ this year then consider that the receivers they added are all rookies I'd say your expectations are way too high right now

These are my thoughts exactly.. you dont see rookie receivers come in and product year 1 unless its a guy like AJ Green or Julio Jones. Clearly none of the guys we got in the draft have that type of talent, otherwise they would have been top 10 picks.

I think everyone needs to settle down a little bit. We added a lot of potential in this draft, but right now, thats all it is - potential.

  3. in all fairness, the Raiders have NEVER had 3 guys that run sub 4.30 40s on the field all at the same time. Just saying.

But I do agree and understand you point. These guys have to be able to play.

If they havent, then they must have been awfully close with Heyward-Bey, Ford and McFadden. Those guys are all absolute burners. But I think we all know it means nothing unless you have a guy that can get them the ball.

Here's to hoping EJ is that guy.

  4. We've got to stop worrying about what the Jets are going to do. They've proven to be just as clueless as us when it comes to drafting a QB. So if we trade down and they take Nassib, I'll be rejoicing. Thats one less QB we'll probably miss on.

I'd much rather trade down and take what falls to us. Whether thats a WR, OL, LB, QB. I'm fine either way.

  5. Chris Mortensen:

The Bills' 8th slot may be generating most pre-draft buzz: Tavon Austin or QB? Or trade back & pick between Nassib & Barkley?

Seems like things are really starting to heat up and it looks like we'll be in a good place to trade back if we want to. Between the 3 OL guys and Tavon Austin.. it looks like someone is bound to be looking to move up.

    I'm all for trading back.

  6. That's true.. but Barkley was considered a top 5 talent only a year ago. Did he lose all of his talent in a year? I dont think so. Taking Russell Wilson in round 3 last year didn't make him less talented.

The truth is, it doesn't matter where you draft a QB if he can play. If the Bill's brass thinks one of these guys can play, I dont really care where we take him. I just hope they're right.

  7. Really interesting to see how little excitement there would be for Geno, and how much there would be for Manuel.

Also.. I think it would be very interesting to see how many votes Nassib would get if we didnt have his former coach as our new HC. I think alot of people like Nassib just because of Marrone. I'm not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing.

  8. We all like certain things about the top QBs. Geno has the arm, Barkley has the pedigree, Nassib has the leadership, Manuel has the mobility.

But put all that aside and think about which QB you would be most excited to see in a Bills uniform. When I think about what my initial reaction will be if any of these names are called.. my list looks like this:

    1) Barkley

    2) Manuel

    3) Smith

    4) Nassib

Not sure what that means but I guess I'm pulling for Barkley.

  9. Just wanted to visualize it in depth chart form.

    "Biggest needs" in red

    "Could be improved" in blue

    "Solid starter" in green

    "We're set" in black

    DEFENSE

    CB DE DT DE CB

    McKelvin Dareus Troup Williams Gilmore

    OLB ILB ILB OLB

    Williams Sheppard Lawson Anderson

    S S

    Searcy Byrd

    OFFENSE

WR LT LG C RG RT TE WR WR

Easley Glenn Snow Wood Urbik Pears Chandler Graham Johnson

    QB

    Kolb

    RB

    Spiller

So our needs (in my opinion):

    Tier 1

    QB

    WR

    G

    ILB

    CB

    Tier 2

    T

    S

    DT

    WR

I'd like to see all 5 tier 1 needs addressed in the draft at some point, but I would understand taking a better value at one of the blue or green positions instead of reaching.

When I look at the roster like this I realize that we do have some serious talent at some key positions. We need to add a few more starter quality pieces (and a QB that can play) over the next 2 drafts and I really we could have a good team.
