  1. I think a more prudent approach this year in free agency is to go quality over quantity. If Beane believes there is a guy better than what we currently have at any position of need, they sign them early in the process. If not, just wait until after the crazy spending stops...then spend money on value depth types players that bring either a vet leadership presence or experience to help the youth of the team.

That being said, i'd like for us to look at getting one of those top TE's in FA to pair with Knox and Sweeney. This will allow Knox to learn from a true #1 TE and Sweeney can replace Lee Smith as the #3. Daboll can now focus the offensive approach to a more ball controlled playaction type offense with 2 athletic TE's to threaten the seems & red zone. We can upgrade the speed outside with maybe a guy like Phillip Dorsett while the young rookie wideouts develop in spot duty...these weapons give Josh a plethora of options to get this offense going regardless of the opponent.

Go get a starting RT, move Cody Ford to RG (he can also play RT if needed)...re-sign Spain and draft a C-G (although I think McBeane likes Bates in this swing spot) and the OL is set, imo.

I would not sign a high price WR or RB in FA at all...a vet RB like Hyde, MacKinnon or Drake would be ok, if the value is there. But I do like Najee Harris (Alabama) because  he's a big athletic back w/ great hands out of the backfield and he may be there in the 3rd-4th rd.

I would place high value on an edge rusher in FA if one is available but don't overpay...I believe Edge & WR are our #1 targets in this draft. The draft is also deep for middle LB's, I would love to move Edmunds to the SLB and get an instinctive inside guy (not in the 1st rd) to replace him in the middle.

    So.....Singletary.   ?

Love Motor, but we need help for next year. More of a thumper would be a nice addition.

I agree that adding another back is necessary...I like these rb's for the Bills- J. Taylor, Wisc (hope he falls to the 2nd rd) or Najee Harris, Ala ( rd 2-4th).

1 technique DT, OLB with some pass rush juice, DE, WR, OT, RB.

    Lorax won't last forever.

One thing the Bill's will have is cap space and spots to fill...so some of those needs will hopefully be addressed in free agency.

    My wishlist

DE- time to find that guy either in FA or draft

MLB- Move Edmunds to SLB. He's not instinctive or physical enough at middle but could be a good edge setter & edge rusher ala Lomax...

    WR- good draft for wideouts

RB- draft a good downhill runner, could be had in the middle rounds.

DT- Big nasty that can plug & move down the LOS...maybe even 2, one FA & one draft. Make opponents try to run wide, we're pretty good covering defending wide.

Since the onside kick has become a near impossibility for the kicking team to recover, unless it's a surprise onside. They need to put in a rule that eliminates the onside kick and replace it with a 4th and 15. If a team scores they would have the option of kicking the ball off or having a 4th and 15 at their own 35 yard line. If they get the first down the drive keeps going like normal. If they fall short, the other team takes over where they missed from. They can even make it more interesting and make it to where each team only gets two 4th and 15's a game. This would be way better than doing an onside kick which has become nearly impossible for the kicking team to recover. Would anyone be on board with this? It's actually something Steve Tasker said that the NFL Competition committee has had discussions about in the past

I like the 4th & 12 version starting at the 28 yd line used by AAF...one caveat any pass interference or illegal contact (5yd holding) are not automatic 1st down unless the infraction happens past the line to gain for a 1st down on the play.

There's nothing ridiculous or complex about it. The value it's based on is the amount that player signs for. I've been discussing this on this forum for a decade, but it typically draws blank stares and for some reason is equated to particle physics.

This is not an accident. They aren't participating in some behind-the-scenes shenanigans. These are calculated moves that takes years of foresight to pull off correctly.  Ozzie Newsome is the man who wrote the book on gaming the comp pick system, and the Pats front office has shown over the years that it's taking it to the next level.

Bills' past GM's such as Nix, Whaley, Brandon, Levy, etc, etc, had no clue what was going on in regards to this and were incapable of seeing that far into the future to pull it off. So it sort of makes sense that a large portion of our fan base doesn't understand what's happening here.

In fairness to OBD, they are trying to build a roster by drafting and developing player w/ select FA signing sprinkled in...the Pats on the other hand have less turnover year to year. One caveat, NE has started trading for developing player lately using mid round pick, which I believe don't count against the formula. Case in point:

Long before the draft began, the Patriots:

Many of those deals also included swaps and tinkering with late-round selections

I expect Beane to dabble with this approach this year with all these draft picks...

With the Redskins getting a 3rd, 5th and 7th round compensatory picks it makes it a greater possibility that they may Ent to move up and draft their QB of the future.

If you were the Bills GM, would you move from 9 to 14 and take both 3rd round picks?

    Are compensatory picks tradeable?

We have no idea what this team is going to do in FA and the trade market before we make proclamations on who the Bills will be selecting in the draft.

    This ^^^^^

I would like to see what FA are signed to fill the needs on the team and use the draft for player development & scheme fit.

They have to protect Josh first & foremost then get some playmakers to go with this offense. It's more costly to sign WR's, CB & DE in free agency, my gut tells me that management will target OL, DT & TE position there and draft playmakers and develop them going forward.

     J. Williams may be the guy, if he grades higher than a FA OL pickup...A Dawkins move to the inside would be a great move, does McBeane agree with this assessment?

Off-season moves should be very interesting either way...Go Bills!

David Edwards would make a good fit in the first round.  Along with bolstering an offensive weapon like Marquis Brown in the second.  The defense spends to much time on the field and the offense needs to be restructured completely.  Then we need a dual running back set to pound the holes.  As for free agency offensive linemen they make a mint; have to draft and build them up.

I would prefer we address the OL in FA...the new age college offensive scheme have made it very difficult to judge adaptability to the NFL.

FA is a better route to fill the needs on the OL, imo...keep drafting & developing OL with the 3-5th rd picks for depth with the hopes of finding that gem.

  10. Wist list 2019:

    Free Agency:

    Ju'Wuan James- RT

    Matt Paradise - C

This sures up 3 critical positions (LT,RT & C) for a functional line, imo. The guard play will improve with better center leadership...

Tyrell Williams- WR  Red zone & down field target decent size

Phillip Dorsett- WR   hasn't done much so far in the league but his speed has to be respected, can fill the jet sweep & downfield target so badly needed for Josh.

Jesse James - TE    Ideal size & chain mover to keep drives alive & red zone target.

EJ Gaines- CB   he knows McD & Frazier's system shouldn't cost too much...even tho I like how Wallace is developing. I also don't want McBeane drafting a CB in the 1st rd, LOL!

    2019 Draft:

1st rd- Best player available I would love to get Ed Oliver if he's there when we pick but I wouldn't be surprised that they have their eye's on a CB here with a 9/10 pick.

2nd-4th rd- Best offensive player available- RB, WR or OL

players I like in this position :

2nd rd grade- Damian Harris RB, M. Brown (Jr) WR, Noah Fant TE or OL

3rd rd grade- If no WR in previous rd, Parris Campbell, Deebo Samuel- WR (I'd like hybrid type players w/ speed for Daboll offense), best OL player

4th rd grade (2 picks)- Khalil Hodge ILB tackling machine (move Edmunds to SLB), best DB or pass rusher avail...

My 2019 wishlist, subject to change! ?

Drafting a CB in the Top 5 would be laughable with all the other needs on this team..

All depends on what they bring in during free agency...use that to fill the team needs.

Use the draft to identify & select players that fit the team profile & scheme, imo.

I wouldn't be upset at drafting Baker due to his playmaking skill set in a defensive scheme that McD & Shepard require out of the DB's.

Didn't Anderson just throw one to the other team today? He also had a second one that should've been a pick-6 but they dropped it.

Last week against the Colts he threw 3 INTs last week too and had a 4th INT that should've been a pick-6 dropped also.

WTH is should have??? You're assuming all NP pick 6's were INT's!

Here's a should have for you, NP should have been cut (PS maybe) and another QB could have been the 3rd stringer...NP is who we thought he is, and we let him off the hook!

Peterman a little more than 1 quarter vs Texans = passing TD

Allen and Anderson in last 22 quarters = 0 passing TDs

I don't know about you but I like my QBs to throw TDs. Peterman seems like the only one who can do that with this crappy offense.

The problem is that he throws more INT's which become TD's for the other team...he's like a minus 6!

The young Kelly is a gunslinger like his dad  Uncle.  He has no fear to throw the ball into tight coverage.  I always liked the kid but can see why many teams passed based on his hot head attitude growing up. I think Denver made a smart move picking him late. Elways gonna look good here and get some redemption From the Lynch pick

Take this for what it’s worth.  On the most recent episode of the Bills Beat podcast Joe B and Fairburn get a bit into evaluating McDermott and Beane.  The subject of Whaley comes up.

Many have debated what Whaley’s role was in selecting EJ.  If you remember he was officially named GM after the 2013 draft, though many speculated he took over for Buddy Nix unofficially before then.  So while Buddy was technically GM when the selection was made, many felt it was Whaley’s call.

Joe B isn’t one of them.  He said that he refuses to believe Whaley was involved with the pick.  He thinks EJ was 100% a Buddy Nix move and that Whaley was playing “good soldier” and went along with the pick.

What that doesnt explain is why Whaley overspent to trade for Sammy Watkins the next year.  It seemed as though that was a result of him trying to justify the selection on EJ.

Either way, that’s what Joe B thinks

I looked at like this, Whaley chose to surround EJ with weapons to succeed and stop with the notion of he wasn't my pick.

Whaley's comments after being fired shed light that EJ may not have been his choice...https://billswire.usatoday.com/2017/05/22/doug-whaley-regrets-not-finding-a-franchise-quarterback-for-the-bills/
