The sacks will come. Schobel has done plenty this year and has come really close to some sacks and strips.

But then again some people will tell you that Ellis needs to start.

I agree that Schobel can be dominant, and he plays smart and has been a solid tackler. What has been lacking is the QB pressure and sacks.

 

I just think he is playing hurt and does not have that push that he needs. He is pretty light as a DE and relies on a speed game ala Jason Taylor, take away the speed and what you have left is a pretty solid tacking lineman, but not much in the way of moves to elude linemen.

 

He also draws double teams - not all the time, but often enough where the rest of the line should be stepping up.

 

He is far from alone, has Kelsey's name been called much this year for making any big plays?

Sometimes its a good thing to be embarrassed like that, depending on how the team responds. The players, whether they say it in the media or not have to be feeling pretty good about themselves at 4-0. I remember watching a NFL films piece on the 95 49'ers. Steve Young said " We had just won three in a row when we went into Philly and got embarrassed 52-7, we had the attitude going into the game that we were going to win just by showing up." After the game he said something to the effect of not knowing what they were about but that he knew that wasn't it. I realize the situation is not exactly the same but if Jauron, Fewell and the players collectively come together and understand that they have no business relying on a second year QB to make or break their chances then this might just be a blessing in disguise going forward. Accountability is what I witnessed being the downfall of our team on Sun. When your starting QB goes down, if you're really a playoff team, you rally together and fight! You don't curl up in the fetal position and feel sorry for yourself.

 

I think just about everyone agrees that some good can come out of this, if it serves as a reality check and IF our young guys can build off of it.

 

Personally, I hope they make our offensive line jog for two weeks straight. I am tired of hearing how we have the biggest (fattest) offensive line in football. If old Al Davis owned our team he would have fired everyone including the waterboy - of course the Raiders will suck until he goes to that great owners box in the sky.

I am so with you on that one. I never will understand why Ralphy or his hand-picked GMs will bet the farm on some guy with a "high motor" and potential, while letting a true stud leave town.

Good to be back, although I have been busy supporting my local Bills Backers here in Cold Blue MN. Just haven't been out to the boards for a long while. I guess watching brutal games on a big screen with my fellow Bills Backers here was sufficient torture:)

The hit looked legal to me. The follow through as the players hit the ground looked like the defender took some liberty to drive home the blow. It may be dirty, but its part of the game, and not against the rules.

 

You surprise me John, I thought that you would see that as a clear helmet to helmet hit. Not dirty, but against the rules none-the-less. For ticky tacky penalties, I thought the roughing the passer penalty last night against the Steelers was out of line - a clean hit just as the QB released the ball... lame.

They don't score and they actually stop most other teams from scoring. The NFL hates teams like this, they are the New Jersey Devils of football.

 

That is a great analogy Baltimore runs the trap defense like no other NFL team - win field position, no turnovers, a great forecheck, pressure the other team into turnovers, and finally score off of their mistakes.

 

Can make for a boring game, but I thought their game against Pittsburg was fun to watch.

Oh, I am extreemly happy we are 4-1, I just am not very comfortable with our lead in the division after that performance.

 

Also, if all we are after is a respectable amount of wins then we probably are fine, but if what we really want is a team that can take command of a game from beginning to end and maybe make a respectable run into the playoffs, then we have a ways to go. Outside of Seattle we have had to come back against every team we have played and on Sunday we got spanked.

 

If it aint broke, it could certainly use a tune up.

 

Hope is not a strategy, but still I hope that this was the one really bad stinker of a game that they needed to get out of the way. Now our guys have a bye week to make adjustments and get healthier.

You can take anyone out with almost any kind of hit if they are in a vulnerable position like trent was in. It wasn't a "helmet to Helmet" hit with intentions to injure, it was helmet to helmet because they are around the same height and thats where peoples heads end up if they don't duck

Call me crazy, but I feel the Bills just didn't come out motivated yesterday. I believe the Bills were the better team and will keep believing that unless they lose the next 3 games. We've played tough teams, we beat Jacksonville. Oakland, even though winless, is a tough and physical team.

 

Whatever motivation they had coming in the game I think wiped out when Edwards went down. And the way his head ricocheted on the turf I figured it would be a concussion. But the rest of the team should have been motivated to play tougher football after that. I remember Edwards during the Oakland game in the 4th quarter, being knocked down hard, goes to the sidelines, sits to recollect his thoughts for a second, gets up and marches up and down the bench yelling at teammates and getting them fired up before going out and winning the game. That type of leadership and vocality is needed more in this team. I expected Whitner to fulfill that void when Edwards went down.

 

It seems at times we're motivated to play 'balls out' football and the offensive line and defense do great jobs, and then other times we just look like we're going through the motions with less attitude.

 

We need more attitude from more players.

 

They did look flat yesterday.

Although there is a connotation regarding the mentally handicap, the rudimentary definition of "to cause to move or proceed slowly; delay or impede" fits pretty well with Perry's approach to that game and making adjustments.

The Bills were definitely outcoached...and outplayed on the defensive side. I couldn't believe the stupid play calling...don't they realize how much Kurt Warner fumbles? BLITZ!

 

But if we had to lose one, this was a good one to lose. Plus it's a good wake-up call. Let's see how they rebound.

We are going to face other teams that can actually pass the ball, if our team is going to make a run at the playoffs we are going to need to figure out how to pressure a passing offense and force turnovers, or at the very least get off the field on 3rd downs.

A couple of my thoughts on the Bills defense yesterday:

 

All day yesterday it felt like he was dropping the LB core and the secondary by at least 10 yards to not get killed with the deep ball, yet Kurt Warner never threw a single deep pass yesterday. He kept throwing flats, quick slant routes, and screens, all of which led to a huge chunk of yardage. Their YAC must of been pretty high yesterday. I was waiting for a blitz or two, or maybe some defensive plays to have a guy or two guard the flat and screen plays, yet none of those adjustments happened. Kurt Warner had a million years to throw the football, and the sh------- ass screens and flat plays went for almost 15 yards everytime. Even the couple of times when a Bills defender was there at the line of scrimmage, they barely even touched whoever had the ball and let them waltz right on by for another first down.

 

The Cardinals didn't do anything that impressive on offense yesterday, yet were able to score 41 points most in part due to Perry Fewell's incompetence on adjusting to what the Cardinals were doing. Is he just mentally incapable of registering what's going on the field? I mean if you're going to get killed deep, then get killed deep because it's better than watching Kurt Warner picking us apart with little dinks and dunks on 15-20 play scoring drives all day.

I don't know what all the other replies have to do with anything you said, but I agree. Fewell never adjusted to what was happening on the field. The scheme didn't work from beginning to end, and he did nothing to shake things up.

In my opinion, that hit on Edwards was dirty. The defender had his head into Edwards' chin, and continued to drive his helmet into Edwards while they were on the ground. I hope that S.O.B. get fined & suspended.

 

I wouldn't call it dirty, but it was helmet to helmet. You can take a guy out, particularly one that is in a vulnerable position like Trent was after the throw, without a helmet to helmet hit - and it can still be a viscious sack. Don't know if there will be a fine, but I would not be surprized.

 

I know that Kurt got a bump on his chin, but I could not catch Mitchell getting his helmet in there on the replays. Maybe he scratched him with a nail.

If we were going to get spanked I guess now before the break is better than any other time.

 

Trent has two weeks to slowly work back to see if he can go through a workout without any lingering concussion effects.

 

This team that may have felt that they were a bit better than they actually are will have a lot of film to look over.

 

The coaching, which has been abysmal at making quick adjustments, has 2 weeks to re-think how to play a strong passing team on defense, and the offense needs to get more than Evans involved in the passing game. We need to get Hardy on the fast track. I do think that Trent and company planned on getting the ball to him, but after Trent got knocked out that plan was tossed out with a lot of other ideas.

 

We cannot get pressure on a QB with only 4 guys. It makes me sick to watch teams that can generate pressure with just 3 or 4 guys. Our Defensive Ends simply got steered upfield and out of the play and the interior d-line did not get much or any push.

 

I do agree with many posters here that Fewell put in a very conservative zone defense that Kurt simply ate up like it was a red-shirt drill. At some point in the game a coach has to understand that the scheme is not working and make adjustments. Granted Kurt generally got the ball out quickly, but there were several times when he simply had forever to make a play. Kurt is known for fumbling the ball when he gets hit, we should have gone after him, and let our corners Yobouty and McKelvin sink or swim in the deep end of the pool.

 

Our offensive line is struggling, but Losman's 3 and 5 step drops were not helping much. He appears to get deeper on those than Edwards and that threw some of the protections off. Fowler simply has to play better, or find his true calling as a matadore. Peters is out of shape - it is like the big dummy sat on his couch eating bon bons while his agent peeled grapes for him telling him he was pro-bowl material and deserved a fat raise and Peters bought into that line of crap. Peters got where he was because he had raw talent, and worked hard - the Bills coaching staff did the rest.

 

I don't think that the talent difference between our two teams was reflected in the score, but our team was out-coached and the Bills still have some question marks on a team that has been built for a run.

 

Pass Rushers: Kelsey has not earned his contract - that one still boggles my mind (must have some blackmail material on Ralphy), Schobel has not played up to his potential.

 

Tight End: we still do not have a solid TE who can contribute to blocking but primarily serve as a reliable outlet receiver for Trent.

 

Center: Fowler may be really smart, but I would rather knock a few points off of his wunderlik and add some bad-ass strength. Can't count how many times he gets shoved around. An upgrade at center would make that whole line better.

 

WR: Hardy may be the answer, but he needs to grow into his NFL shoes quick and that isn't going to happen unless they send more passes his way. He is going to drop some, he is going to need to learn to use his body to out-muscle and out-position corners, but a Hardy threat is the key to opening things up for Evans and Lynch.
