  1. With Troy Franklin still on the board it seems like a no brainer. Use 2 of those 5th rounders climb back up and 4th and go get Franklin. He and Coleman together with what we have would be game changing. It would also follow the Packers model and Beane admits admiration of their approach.

You have a good point, but I’m not convinced that much separates the best defensive teams from the average ones. Those teams have good defenses, but they also have dynamic offense. We’re never going to see the 85 Bears or Dilfer Ravens again. The Ravens have Jackson, while SF has a dynamic offensive coach along with good receivers and CMC. I’m not about to call the Ravens or 49ers defense overrated, but sometimes the best defense is a good offense. Those teams invested in their offense, particularly the 49ers with hiring Shanahan. One player like Bosa makes a huge impact on defense. The problem is the difficulty in finding a guy like Bosa. The Lions have the same luxury with Hutchinson. Those guys are game changers, making the entire defense look better.

It’s actually similar to the 90’s Bills teams with Bruce and Biscuit. Great Offense, bend but don’t break opportunistic defense.

Jackson is a FA, so much better chance the main CB;s for next year will be Douglas, Benford, and Elam plus Johnson at nickel (is he also a FA??)  Throw in a rookie and/or a low level late signee FA. Only way Jackson comes back is either there's little interest for him or the Bills have zero confidence in Elam.  Which is that's the case, likely would see him traded pre draft for maybe a 5th or 6th rounder.  But with such a likely low return, think much better chance they will bring him back for another year.

Hyde is a FA hinted at retiring so I'd be fine moving on there, but bring back Poyer for one year as would make me nervous having two new S in one year.  And would be fine with the name you mention Gilman as Hydes replacement, then draft i n3rd round or so a replacement for 2025 for Poyer.

But the bigger concern is the DL and doubtful all those names are back as many are FA and Bills can't afford them all.

I thought Settle and Jones were under contract for one more year… I was mistaken. So the DL revamp is bigger than I thought. I figured they would re-up one good DL that being Floyd.

so I guess the D line starts here:

Johnathan  Anjou     Oliver    Rousseau  (Draft FA) (Draft FA) (Draft FA) (Miller)

    rough indeed….

I’m not worried about defense at all. I like McDermott’s defensive scheme, but ultimately the NFL comes down to outscoring opponents. Quit the ball control offense, trust the defense to do just enough, and play ball. Defense has been legislated out of the game. If you have enough guys to make a few big plays, that’s all you can ask on defense. We have that with players like Milano and Douglas returning.

I think the Ravens are a stark contrast to this thought process. You are correct about 95% of the NFL but the Ravens and Niners definitely still place high emphasis on stifling defense.

  5.      It’s an unfortunate reality that Poyer and Hyde are done. They empty their tanks in Bills Red, White and Blue. I think Hyde will retire. Poyer I’m not sure yet.

That said I think the plan for next year may already be laid out with some personnel we have and a free agent acquisition. I think Rapp with be resigned and I think the improvements in Cam Lewis and a fully recovered Damar Hamlin can provide the necessary depth. I think Lewis although listed as a corner  could move into Poyer role. It will be a downgrade from 2 years ago but a sideways move from last year.

There are not many good free agents I think we could target but I do think Alohi Gilman from the Chargers could be there for the taking. He is a very good cover Saftey who is used to running the back end. He fits McDermott’s scheme and could replace Hyde and maybe provide the back end speed we lacked last year.

I also think a healthy Benford, Douglas, Johnson, White, Jackson, Elam and Neal mean  maybe shifting Elam to Saftey or one of the others could work. Neal has played Saftey but him seeing the field on D has been a scary proposition.

I also think a couple mid round picks that will hopefully contribute are necessary at both Corner, Saftey, LB and 1 Tech DT.

The gloom and doom over the defense though I think is overblown. If it looked like this to start it would be solid, if not still top 10:

    (27 players 2 or 3 on PS)

            Floyd    Jones   Oliver  Rousseau

(Lawson) (Settle) (Anjou) (Miller)    (Johnathan)(Draft-1 tech)

                     Milano       Bernard

                  (Williams)    (Spector)

                    (Draft)

    Benford          Johnson          Douglas

    (White)             (Neal)            (Jackson)

                             (Draft)

         FA-   Gilman               Rapp

                 (Hamlin)            (Lewis)

                                           (Draft)

  6. I just watched his highlight reel again. It looks like Roman Wilson will be an NFL stud. I think he could be this draft classes Puka Nukua. He has 4.27 40 time and the dude just always has separation. I think he would immediately make an impact on this team. He has played against the top D-1 talent and will be ahead of most in other rookies. I think he fits this offense better than anyone on ther than Harrison who will be long gone before we are on the board. He is only 6’ 0” but he plays bigger than that. He is always in the right place on the field too.

I think Diggs will be back but he and Shakir may have an entirely new room otherwise. Justin Shorter will make the squad and I think Wilson would be a great addition. Those 4 would be really strong and save a lot of cap room.

We might be the only team that doesn’t have a RB screen in our tool box. Teams are blitzing Allen up the middle and an effective screen would quickly neutralize that. Teams are also spying on Allen preventing the run and yet it seems our WR’s/TE’s rarely beat their man. We seldom run crossing routes or even roll Josh out to put added pressure on the D.

In a nutshell, I don’t know what our offensive identity is any longer. Do they not have play designs to get Diggs open. The quick passing game is missed and it seems we are back to long developing plays rather than taking the easy stuff to open it up for deeper throws.

Sherfield and Harty have been bad misses in FA. We have no speed deep threat.

Josh is showing some bad tendencies recently by throwing on the run across his body to the other side of the field. Those throws have been coming up short resulting in TO’s.

They better figure it out next week against the Dolphins.

Running game, with PA from under center would work. More 12 personnel and perhaps putting Shakir in the one and Diggs in the slot. Remember Diggs got to where he is by being an incredible slot receiver.

Here’s what we now know for sure….the London trip was NOT the problem. This team has major problems that have nothing to do with either jet lag or fish and chips.

I would suggest perhaps we choose the Fish in flight along with 2 cups of coffee… Now we have interminable Jag Lag😜Oh and our pilot may be leaking air…

Where are you finding all22 of the last 3 years

You really have to dig for snippets when it is going back a ways but I’ve had time…Here is one such snippet from the 2020 Rams game…

There are others in small clips here and there if you are specific. To be clear I’m not pouring over game film… I watch the YouTube footage and then find any all 22 analysis and clips of the same game afterwards. I wish there was Huddle footage of NFL games!

This thread is kind of ridiculous.

Allen isn't Jordan because he's not the GOAT in football.  But he's certainly not Pippen - who was essentially a very talented sidekick and supporting player on that team.

Allen is Magic, or maybe Malone right now since he doesn't have a title yet.

That is not at all how the comparison was intended. It was not about the greatness he us not even in that strata. I simply meant in his positional usage and skill set as a big man distributor which indeed is what Pippen was. I meant he needs to be viewed and managed differently. Daboll understood.

No he's not- Diggs acts and states he's a leader but all he does is chirp when things aren't perfect -typical pre-madona wr-

Don't get me wrong he can be a game changer but comparing anyone to MJ is just silly - dude was a straight legend that liked to play against the best talent and constantly rose to the challenges- His Flu game will forever be my favorite

Sampras is a legends…Yacking on the court and winning the match….

  13.        I’m sitting home with COVID😩 I think it was brought on by Monday night’s debacle. Anyway, I’ve been bingeing all 22’s and game footage of the last 3 years. In watching that tape I realized that Dorsey has stopped using one of Josh’s greatest strengths, the deep middle crossing pattern. Cole Beasley use to provide such a great underneath security blanket that I think it allowed some of these routes and route trees to develop differently.
Much like Brett Favre, Josh can throw a seam route better than almost anyone in the history of the game. How many seam TD’s or even seam routes have we seen this year? None. Why, I think we don’t have anyone one good enough or designated to be the slot outlet in that Beasley role. Until physically taken away by coverage schemes that abused him because of his small stature Beasley was like the Bills Steve Curr the clutch shooter you could go to when Diggs (The Bills Jordan) wasn’t open.  KC physically took that away in the two playoff games (Gabe Stepped up though in the 13 seconds game). When Daboll left Dorsey abandon that concept.
Could that player could be Harty or Kincaid?  McKenzie couldn’t handle it he lacked the discipline to mirror Josh. You need a special player with Basketball like instincts in the slot. Someone who mirrors the QB from the slot.  Josh needs this player. I would argue Kelce Swift is this player for Mahomes as “Me Gronk Me catch ball” was this player for Brady. It elevates his entire game and opens up the field. If coupled with under the center Play Action and running game this offense could be indefensible.

Josh is different though at the QB position Mahomes and Brady are point guard QB’s. Josh is more like Scotty Pippen a small forward who distributes… The offense is different when it runs through someone with a unique skill set like his. He will refuse the 5-7 yard gimme initially. However when you have a player in the Beasley role it allows him to come back to it after he exhausts the chunk play option. This safety net mitigates risk and promotes both offensive rhythm and sustained drives. This is the difference between Daboll and Dorsey in a nut shell.
Josh’s thinks he’s an 11 personnel run and shoot QB. He can be for short periods but he needs his Steve Curr to sustain points when Jordan’s (Diggs is covered) shot is off. If this was coupled with the under center PA run/pass concepts we flashed out of 12 earlier this year this offense could be unstoppable.
This year the RPO option route trees where the entire world knows the 3 options require super human QB skills that are not sustainable. A couple great examples of the Daboll concept games are Rams v Bills 2020 wk 3 and KC v Bills 2021.  Perhaps the 2021 KC game gave Spags the film to realize he had to physically shutdown Beasley.
If Joe Brady really does a deep dive I think he can add the deep mid crossers and slot mirror concept back without flipping the playbook or terminology. Another point- I think Gabe stepping up in the 13 seconds game created a false sense that the slot mirror concept was unnecessary. I think Dorsey and Allen thought they could just open things up…apparently that is not the case.
I just don’t understand why they have been so stubborn and I think this above all else is why Diggs is pissed. He is super smart and knows so he is like Jordan before the triangle worked… but his clock for a championship is ticking. I would be pissed too if I knew there was an easy button but no one acknowledged it…

  14. What is very ironic to me in retrospect is that Stefan’s comments seem to echo my original post to some degree. Without outlining defining factors or getting in to detail he basically outlined a similar timeline. I find this interesting as even though the W/L  record was better afterwards he felt the first 9 games hand a different overall vibe from the team.
