  1. I actually wonder if this is lazy.

Nix and Gailey know the South, so they draft guys from the South. They coached the North-South game, so they draft a bunch of players from that game. They know San Diego, so they pick up free agents from San Diego.

I question whether this approach is going to be successful in the long run.

Well considering the SEC has been the strongest conference in the country for the majority of the past decade, I don't feel remotely bad having them pick up players from the South.

  2. Yeah, camp has been great for the defense and before you think this defense is so improved, consider that fact that the Bills offense has regressed. yes, it means little if you have a boatload of QBs, WRs and RBs, but have little or no help at pass protection or run blocking.

How many years do we have to wait until the OL is addressed? ...trying to be optimistic, let’s see what happens in the next couple of practice games which will be soon upon us. Maybe it will not look like the Bills will once again need multiple QBs after they get the s#it beat out of them for yet another season.

Maybe it won't be sooo painfully obvious that LT is such a position of need right again...after all CHIX can't be that blind - right?

The lockout is probably the biggest factor here. Yeah, Fitz and Co. worked together in the off-season, but it's nothing like training camp and live practices. Besides, defenses nearly always look good early on because defense really isn't as complex as calling offensive plays--generally, defenses can get away with just going full speed ahead at the QB.

By the way, where have you heard that the offense is looking all that bad? Everything I've seen/heard is that the Bills offense is looking explosive. The sky isn't falling yet, Chicken Little.

  3. are they Modrak's picks? he might make up the board, however, first-rounders being what they are, the chief scout has the least say in determining a team's direction here. General managers and coaches have more say here, because this is where the most impact on a team is made and where they generally are left on the hook.

John, I heartily disagree with you on this point. The job of scouts is to provide information to the GMs and coaches about these upcoming players, and the brass make judgment calls based on their research. The front office then uses the evidence given to them by their scouts to make decisions about best player available, best fit for the team, etc.

If the evidence from the scouting department is poor or incomplete, then the team won't be getting the player they thought they were buying into. Good scouts should be the backbone of a team.

  4. Wrong!! Come on!

JPL was drafted in '04. He "missed" the '04 season after he broke his leg in his first camp. He was healthy most of the season--he was Bledsoe's backup.

JPL played his first season as starter for...... Mike Mularkey!--who sat his incompetent ass down twice in favor of Holcomb.

Another first round QB in Atlanta hasn't taken "3-4 years" in Mularkey's system to "develop".....

Bingo. Even if JP was limited in his on-field time due to injury his rookie year, he still had time to ride the bench, learn the playbook, and develop a greater awareness of the NFL game. Maybe he needed another year to develop, but his output after his sophomore season warranted only a very cautious optimism at best. Quite frankly, you needed better performance out of a guy worth 2 years of first round picks, and JP, while showing flashes, never exhibited the ability to be a solid starter, let alone a franchise QB. Mularkey knew that JP never had the ability and tried to win in spite of him.

  5. I don't agree. If Mularkey knew Losman was a "complete waste" as you put it, why did he keep putting him back in, over and over and over? I didn't say Losman was the second coming of Joe Montana, but it there is a slight chance that it might have turned out different if he was handled different, confidence plays a real big part in a young, raw quarterback's success in the NFL.

Do you think that Mularkey would have a job for long (not that he did here in Buffalo, but work with me here) if he didn't try to utilize the guy that cost the Bills two first round picks? There was a lot of pressure in the organization to get JP to play, and, with what he cost, rightly so. Unfortunately he was a dud from the beginning and Mularkey knew it. Letting him flounder from week to week wasn't going to inspire his confidence one bit. He wasn't prepared to start so early (if ever) and cost Mularkey his job, as well as setting back the franchise for many years.

  6. Not a bad list. I would have mine as follows:

    1. Lee Evans-has been team's best receiver pretty much since he was drafted.

    2. Marshawn Lynch-Two 1,000 yard seasons. The most exciting running back this team has had since Thurman retired.

    3. Eric Wood-Has potential to be one of the best Guards in the NFL, but too early to put him at #1 on any list, since he has barely played more than one season.

    4. Donte Whitner-Burned like toast often, but always on the field and a fierce hitter.

    5. Willis McGahee-Couple good seasons. Drops down the list because as a pick, because he couldn't even suit up his rookie year. Also drops down because he is an idiot.

    6. Leodis McKelvin-Has had highs and real lows. Good potential. Was a reach in the draft. Will always be remembered in Buffalo for losing the season opener in New England a couple years ago with one of the biggest bonehead plays in Bills history.

    7. J. P. Losman-Had all the physical tools. My personel opionion is that Mularkey ruined this guy, yanking him in and out of the lineup after one bad series.

    8. John McCargo-Only put him above Mike Williams because he lasted longer in Buffalo and was not drafted anywhere near as high as the #4 pick overall.

    9. Mike Williams-No need to explain.

    10. Aaron Maybin-A high first round pick and even gets beat out on special teams. Two years in the NFL and still does not have a sack? Total bust.

I ranked these on their value as draft picks, since that is what the post is about. Just look at this list though, is it any wonder this team has sucked for so long?

I don't buy it. Mularkey's done a hell of a job throughout his career as an offensive coordinator wiht both the Steelers and the Falcons. The QB controversy was ugly, but I'm inclined to err on the side of Mularkey recognizing that JP was a complete waste rather than JP failing because Mularkey poorly coached him.

  7. This fetishizing of the Patriots is getting ludicrous.

As a bunch of posters prior have said, you draft the best player who fits your system. If you believe that you can get a player that you value highly at 48, then it makes sense to trade out of the 34th pick. However, if you grade the quality of talent available to you at 48 to be significantly less valuable as both a player and to your team's needs then the talent available at 34, then you can't pass that up.

Everything the Bills do isn't always wrong. Everything the Patriots do isn't always right. More picks means better odds of finding solid players, but the more marginal quality of the talent as you move down reduces your odds of finding a good or elite player when you trade away from the higher picks. The Bills don't need contributors, they need big-time playmakers. By having whiffed on so many first round picks over the years, the Bills have a bunch of role-players but no elite grade talent. Bill Simmons would say that 1 dollar is better than 4 quarters (though he's talking about the NBA, I still think it's valid here).

Contrary to the belief of a good deal of Bills' fans, the team isn't that far away from being good again. But in order to get back into the fold of good (let alone playoff) teams, the team need to grab high-end talent when it can and plug in solid role players around them. Those role players start looking really good when big-time playmakers open up the game.

  8. This is getting way out of hand.

Agreed. I like the guy's size. I like his story. But there's a reason he was a 7th rounder. Not saying that he can't grow into something great, but come on, we just drafted Marcell freakin' Dareus and all the excitement is about our last round pick?

  9. ...to play football in Buffalo. I'm not impressed. The jury is still out on last year's draft and aside from Dareus, this draft is looking very suspect. I certainly hope that this crew knows something that I don't and doesn't turn out to be yet another 4 year cluster !@#$. Tic toc tic toc...

Osama bin Laden gets killed and your reaction is to post something negative about the Bills draft. Either you're trolling or you just need a little bit more good cheer in your life, sunshine.

  10. Can anyone tell me when did North Carolina become a Football Powerhouse, especially on Defense???? There were all kinds of players picked from that team especially on Defense including the Bills.....reminds me of the NC State year with McCargo and gang who were all busts.......Did all of our scouts just scout North Carolina.....come on guys you missed a lot of talent around the country................Modrak get off your lazy ass and resign, your a BUM!

This is just unreal. You have to be trolling.
