Two Bills Drive

‘Is Ted Cottrell the Jets’ new defensive coordinator and/or assistant head coach this morning? Depending on whom you talk to, the answer is yes, no, or maybe.’

‘"I talked to Herman quite a bit about it and he’ll be giving me a lot of responsibility," Cottrell said last night. "I’ll be his right-hand man, plus being the defensive coordinator, so that was very intriguing to me. I’m pretty happy about what happened."’

‘Cottrell, believing one of the younger hot prospects would get the Buffalo job, didn’t want to wait that long.’

‘Cottrell also mulled an offer from the Redskins and he was under consideration for the Bills’ vacant head-coaching job, although he was considered a longshot.’

‘"Replay is just that – it’s history," Norwood said. "It’s certainly something I can’t change, be it positive or negative. I stand with the work that I did. It’s a good career, an enjoyable career in the NFL. I didn’t make them all, but I didn’t miss them all, either."’

‘Cottrell, who interviewed last week for the Jets’ head-coaching position, indicated that he is to be assistant head coach under Herman Edwards. "He will be giving me a lot of responsibilities," Cottrell said. "Some of the duties, some things on the team, letting me be privy to things that are happening.’

‘The Washington Redskins lost their top defensive coordinator candidate, Ted Cottrell, to the New York Jets yesterday…Bills offensive coordinator Joe Pendry interviewed with Schottenheimer yesterday for the offensive line coach position.’

‘"We agreed to disagree," Marty Schottenheimer said of Cottrell. "He made a choice; I would defer to him [for comment]. He came back to us through [agent Joe Linta] for some things I guess were made available [from] the Jets. We were not prepared to do those things."’

‘According to reports, Cottrell does have an out clause with the Jets should the Bills select him to be head coach to replace Wade Phillips, who was fired earlier this month.’

TBD was the first to break the news to you early this evening. Ted Cottrell has been eliminated from consideration for the Washington Redskins Defensive Coordinator position. Cottrell has turned down the Redskins in order to accept a position with the New York Jets, who interviewed Cottrell today. (Update) ESPN.com has now confirmed this story…

‘"No, I’m not totally done here," Cottrell said, regarding staying in Buffalo. "That’s still a possibility too. I talked to Tom and I’m not out of it yet."’

‘"It doesn’t diminish the great career he had. But as far as people’s consciousness and their memory of him, that [miss] probably screwed him over. "I know I’ll never forget him."’

‘Cottrell, a former Rutgers assistant, was said to be very impressive during his interview last week for the club’s head coaching post, a job that went to Herman Edwards.’

‘Cottrell has interviewed for head coaching as well as coordinating positions, and an NFL source said he remains "very viable" to fill the Buffalo head-coaching vacancy.’
