Still King of the Block

Patriots owner Robert Kraft now has regrets about letting Sam Gash go. “Sam Gash was one of my favorite players,'' the Patriots owner said yesterday. “He's a tough, physical guy who was all about the team. You can't win consistently without leaders like that, guys who lead by example. You can't have guys who talk and don't perform." (Many Bills fans feel the same way Bob.)

Tagliabue Gives "State of the NFL" Address

Reading between the lines, Tagliabue pretty much says that in 2002 Buffalo will be playing in the AFC East with Miami, New England, and the Jets. The key segment is here: "On realignment, Tagliabue said discussions are continuing. They basically are focusing, according to NFL sources, on whether Houston or Baltimore stays in the AFC Central with Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. The edge goes to the Houston Texans going into the Central so that they are not in the same division as the old Houston franchise, the Tennessee Titans." This means that the Bills are out of the running for being in the AFC Central, and thus will stay in the East.

Bills still hurt 10 years later

‘It was that first one, though, that proved to be the football version of the big fish that got away because Buffalo never got nearly that close again. But … so what?’

Syracuse Post-Standard | Jan 26, 2001

Steinberg laments poor Rob in Buffalo

"If Rob throws an interception, Flutie would have thrown 12 touchdown passes. It’s even worse than Steve Young-Joe Montana because Montana actually was a real legend and led them to all those Super Bowls and Flutie hasn’t. So poor Rob, all he’s did was get traded from Jacksonville to there and done his best."

Titans aide to interview with Bills

‘However, Williams looms as a serious candidate. He has distinguished himself as the Titans’ defensive leader and has a reputation for having the kind of "chief executive officer" qualities that are an asset to NFL head coaches.’

Lewis Slipping Away?

‘I was just in a chat room with CBS Sportsline writer Len Pasquarelli and I was asking him about Marvin Lewis. He said that right now Tom Donahoe is very upset… Apparently, either Marvin or some of his associates are leaking the possibility that there is a strong, and I mean strong, possibility that Lewis will be heading to Cleveland in a package deal that would include Ozzie Newsome as well…. If this is the case and I quote "Tom won’t even look any farther and Fox will be the guy".’ [Note: A chat transcript is NOT available to review, so buyer beware.]

‘The survey concluded that Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Stadium… had the second-worst field. Grass fields at the Meadowlands… and Cincinnati’s Paul Brown Stadium ranked third and fourth on the "worst" list. Rounding out the 10 worst were Dallas, Minnesota, Buffalo and New Orleans – all with turf – and Chicago and Miami with grass.’

‘Cottrell…is expected to bring highly regarded defensive backs coach Bill Bradley to New York. There also is a possibility linebackers coach Chuck Lester and defensive line coach John Levra may join Cottrell as well. Levra also may opt to retire.’
