Injured Hansen out at least four weeks

‘The Buffalo Bills won a game Sunday, but lost a key member of their defense. Defensive end Phil Hansen suffered a sprained right knee that will sideline him from four to six weeks, according coach Wade Phillips.’

Buffalo News | Oct 30, 2000

Monday billboard

‘Player of the Game: Bills linebacker Sam Cowart recovered two fumbles and recorded a team-high 11 tackles.’

Buffalo News | Oct 30, 2000

Run all out of comebacks

‘This time it was Doug Flutie who made the critical third-down throw. This time it was the Bills’ defense that forced four turnovers that resulted in 13 points. This time it was Bills kicker Steve Christie who came through in the closing seconds.’

Newark Star Ledger | Oct 30, 2000

Safeties still causing uneasiness

‘On one of the biggest plays of the game against the Buffalo Bills yesterday, the Jets’ troubling free-safety position betrayed them once again. Scott Frost, a quarterback-turned-safety who received the starting nod over Kevin Williams, was beaten on a 52-yard bomb from Doug Flutie to wideout Eric Moulds that gave the Bills a first-and-goal on the Jets’ 1-yard line midway through the fourth quarter.’

Newark Star Ledger | Oct 30, 2000

Coles making an impact

‘His five catches for 131 yards in yesterday’s 23-20 loss in Buffalo gives Coles 15 receptions for 239 yards in the Jets’ past three games.’

Newark Star Ledger | Oct 30, 2000

Healthy Flutie still has the magic

‘"That showed the magic is still there, certainly," Phillips said. "The Jets contained him pretty well. They know a lot about our spreads. But he still made the plays."’

Newark Star Ledger | Oct 30, 2000

Jets can learn a lesson

‘Except this time there was no incredible come-from-behind win. The Jets reached into their bag of miracles once more and all they came up with was a good effort and a few pieces of lint.’

Asbury Park Press/Home News Tribune | Oct 30, 2000

Desperate Bills pull one out

‘Doug Flutie was up to his usual improvisational trickery and Buffalo’s defence was turning turnovers into touchdowns. Sound vaguely familiar?’

Toronto Star | Oct 30, 2000

Another Flutie beauty

‘If Doug Flutie made a statement yesterday, it is likely to blow away with the fallen leaves surrounding Ralph Wilson Stadium.’

Toronto Sun | Oct 30, 2000

Jets can't find comeback trail

‘This time there was no miracle for the New York Jets.’

Toronto Sun | Oct 30, 2000

Flutie directs winning drive

‘The former Canadian Football League star was 18-of-35 passing for 253 yards, a touchdown and — perhaps most importantly — no interceptions. He also calmly engineered the 57-yard drive that got the Bills in position for Christie’s third game-winning kick of the season.’

Toronto Globe & Mail | Oct 30, 2000

Christie puts his best foot forward once again

‘Yesterday, with the wind behind his back and an autumn sun bathing the field, Christie nailed the 15th game-winning field goal of his career and his third this season to give the Buffalo Bills (4-4) a 23-20 victory over the New York Jets (6-2).’

National Post | Oct 30, 2000

Reversal of Fortune at Jets' Expense

‘The Jets have reached deep into their stash of magic dust this season. They sprinkled it liberally over four fourth-quarter comeback victories and buried the Dolphins with it last Monday night. When the Jets went for another handful today, they came up empty.’

New York Times | Oct 30, 2000

Digging Out of Holes Takes Toll on Jets

‘Yesterday the Jets fell behind a desperate Bills team but, after tying the score, ran out of comebacks. Was this a blip or an omen?’

New York Times | Oct 30, 2000

Still Searching for a Safety

‘Coach Al Groh of the Jets expressed concern about the play of his safeties last week, and today he made a change in his lineup by giving Scott Frost, a former quarterback, his first start at safety after a three- year conversion process. Frost took over for Kevin Williams, who had won the job after a three-way competition in training camp. But Williams struggled in the regular season and was dropped to third in the rotation today, behind Chris Hayes. The switch did not solve the Jets’ problems in the secondary. Frost and Marcus Coleman were defending Bills receiver Eric Moulds when he split them and caught a 52-yard pass down the left side. Coleman said both he and Frost were at fault. That led to a field goal that put the Bills ahead by 20-17 in the fourth quarter.’
