Panthers still trying to find way to win

‘They’ve heard this song before.’

Olean Times Herald | Dec 10, 2001

Bills end eight-game home losing streak

‘Travis Henry’s 40-yard effort on a screen pass, preceding the Bills first field goal was the longest reception of the rookie running back’s career. He also finished with 101 yards on 27 carries and became the first Bills’ running back to have two 100-yard games in his rookie year.’

Patriots in driving seat but weary of Buffalo

‘”We’re definitely in the driver’s seat as far as being in the playoffs”, said WR Troy Brown, the 198th player drafted in 1993, but “Buffalo bothers me a lot. They’ve lost some close games.”‘

Crowd (44,549) lowest since 41,231 attended 12/14/1997 game against Jacksonville

The Buffalo Bills played before their smallest home crowd in four years, but rookie Travis Henry and Alex Van Pelt staged a comeback worth watching.

"We were in a regular zone coverage and I dropped back and Nate made a great play on the ball, tipped it up in the air. I just ran under it," Spoon said. "I saw daylight ahead of me. I just took off. I saw everybody clearing the offensive players out. If I didn’t score, I was going to hear it for the rest of my career."

Good coaches can keep bad teams happy by Marv Levy

I witnessed a battle between two teams with two wins between them today (Carolina at Buffalo). I do think there is an approach to coaching teams who are out of the playoff race. Despite the great difficulties some of these teams have had, especially 0-12 Detroit, they’ve struggled, they’ve fought game after game, and the biggest thing these kinds of teams lack is confidence. Confidence comes from winning.

The best example a coach can set is by his own personal work ethic — not by lashing out or by finding fault. These coaches should continue to try to find a solution, continue to work at getting better in the fundamentals of the game — run, throw, block, tackle, catch, kick. Don’t fall apart — that’s the best chance any coach has to salvage some victories in the final few games of the season.

Brandon Spoon post-game comments

Among other comments:

On the win:

?It helps us out a lot and gives us momentum. Alex was saying in the locker room that if we finish up 6-10, we can feel good about ourselves for the fact that we can win our last games. I know coming into this game the expectations and morale were pretty low with the fans, media and everybody. If we can run the table, finish 6-10 and play some good, competitive football these last five weeks, then we can build on into next season. That is what the 49ers did last year. Hopefully, we will be able to build on and move on next season.?

Phil Hansen post-game comments

Among other comments:

On the difference between the first and second half:

“Without looking at the film it is difficult to tell. It seemed as if they ran the same plays. We just executed better. It did seem as if the holes for them to run weren’t as big as they were in the first half. It seemed like things clogged up more in the second half.”

Jay Riemersma post-game comments

Among other comments:

On the crowd support:

“Hats off to all the fans that came out today. They have shown us great support over the years. This has been down year for them as well as for us. We are happy to win one for them.”

Eric Moulds post-game comments

Among other commenrs:

On the first home win of the season:

“It’s good for us. It’s been a long time coming. I want to thank God for us playing well as far as coming back in the second half. We played much better then we did in the first half. We played to win instead of just being in the game.”

Alex Van Pelt post-game comments

Among other comments:

On being more of a locker room presence:

“Probably, it is something that I feel comfortable doing.”

Gregg Williams post-game comments

Among other comments:

On hesitation on going for six at the end of the first half:

“No, there wasn’t, especially with the opportunity to discuss this with Alex prior to the play. I had faith in him.” Regarding the drive at the end of the half? “It gave us more momentum coming in at halftime. It was a catalyst that we talked about at halftime.”

George Seifert post-game comments

Among other comments:

"Buffalo played certainly very effectively in the second half and did a good job. The running back ran hard. They were able to get the ball to the tight end. Defensively they put the clamps on us and we weren’t very dynamic."

Bills rally to down Panthers

On the day where the Bills honored their former coach who taught a never-say-die attitude to his players, the current Bills pulled off a rally from an 18-point deficit to grab their second win of the season. Buffalo, who trailed 24-6 late in the second quarter, pulled out a 25-24 win over the Carolina Panthers in front of 44,549 fans and chilly conditions at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Comeback a painkiller for Bills

‘Finally. After six straight defeats . . . after 393 days without a win at home . . . the Bills had reason to smile in their locker room in Ralph Wilson Stadium.’

Henry runs at chance to receive

‘"I got a chance to run the ball and catch it out of the backfield. Those are the things I want to get more of a chance to do."’
