  1. I have seen the whole Buddy Nix and Chan press conference at BB.com and I have heard others referring to "his shot at Sullivan" but which shot was it?

Anybosy know? If so, PLEASE share. I have got to know!

    Thanks! Go BillS!

Maybe around 23:30 if I remember correctly. Sullivan wanted to challange Nix's comment about 80% of the media speculation being completely false, and 20% having at least a shade of truth. Sullivan said Nix needed to back that statement up and asked if Brian Shotty was contacted/offered the job. Nix said something along the lines of following suit with media protocol and not needing to back up a statement.

"I thought that's how we play this game".

  2. Excellent! A much needed change of pace. Being a cynical sports commentator in the city of Buffalo is not only void of any creativity, it is also an incredibly lazy alternative to what was fomally referred to as "journalism". Unfortuantly, it seems to pay the bills for WGR.

I'm not sure how Nix will pan out as GM, but cracking on Sullivan at the press conference was great to see.

  3. Actually, I think KD took it exactly in the spirit in which it was offered, if his fine response is any indication.

This isn't the Ralph Wilson HOF thread. It seems like an obvious "side issue" thread that is discussing his age, and the things that come with aging. Perhaps I am out of line, but it seems like a discussion of whether you would want to live to be 90 is perfect for this thread.

    So, moving on...

I think I agree with KD, for the most part. If you are independent, and your mind is reasonably good, why not enjoy the ride for as long as it lasts.

I was referring to how you responded to KD's post about being 90 and not in a box. I agreed with what I interpreted as a general appreciation for life in KD's post, disagreed with the infusion of the topic of quality of life when you mentioned your specific family members. My apologies for any confusion.

  4. Seriously?

My brother is 60, in dialysis, bad liver and many other conditions. His life is a fairly miserable one, as far as I can tell. I can't know what I would feel in his position, but I have a feeling the sweet embrace of death would be preferable to me. I guess I feel simple "existence" is overrated.

My Dad is in his late 80's and has limited mobility, but is otherwise in fair shape. If I were him, I'd be happy to be alive.

OTOH, my Mother is 79, in good health, but rapidly loosing her mind. She forgets things we discussed minutes earlier. Some could live with that comfortably, I think (some of them are here, I think), but I have a feeling that would be very hard, for me. Of course, I might forget about that, if I was in her condition.

I'm not sure the post was intended as a debate on quality of life issues as we age.

  5. He was talking about how the owners used to cut corners to save money. I wasn't sure whether he was implying that what Halas did was a good idea or not.

There was an awful lot of revisionist history in that piece. The AFL owners knew that once Ralph gave his word that was good enough? I can run through a list of names who would argue that statement. Bill Polian was the best Gm the team ever had? Then why isn't he still GM? Cuz the honoree fired him. "They" named the stadium after him? How about he named the stadium after himself.

I still contend that Ralph has been instrumental in hiring a litany of poor GMs, poor coaches and has either run off or fired 2 of the best coaches we ever DID manage to get in Saban (twice) and Knox. He lucked into hiring Polian because Terry Bledsoe was good enough to die on the job (he should have been fired for gross incompetance) and Polian was the cheap, in-house, candidate. Good thing he was good. Levy got hired because he was the cheap in-house candidate after RW fired his last brilliant HC in Hank Bullough who the cheap in-house replacement for Kay Stephenson who was the cheap in-house replacement for Knox who left because Ralph would not build him an indoor practice facility. Stephenson was quoted in Relentless as saying the RW "never explained his reasons for selecting me." Kelly didn't come to Buffalo until he had to. The Bills were a Roosevelt Leaks fumble away from the playoffs the previous year. Why wouldn't he sign with Buffalo? Houston paid him more...oh and RW had just had a big flap with Knox who left basically over money. Let us not forget that prior to Knox's arrival the Bills were 5-23 the previous two seasons. Under him the Bills made the playoffs twice and were markedly improved. RW let him walk and they were turning in back to back 2-14s within a year.

The Levy/Polian years were an unusual period of stability within the organization and it showed. Nonetheless RW canned Polian over something stupid and the cycle slowly began again. This recent period of Bills football with constant rotating coaches, coordinators and leadership is much more normal than the previous 10/15 years were.

So bottom line, thanks for keeping the Bills in Buffalo Ralph but let's not pretend that you were magnanimous about it and didn't put a gun to taxpayers heads on multiple occasions. If we didn't foot the bill for you you would have moved to Seattle 40 years ago. If we didn't foot the bill some more in the 90's it would have been LA, or Jacksonville, or Baltimore. Now it's Toronto. You care so much about the Bills staying in Buffalo you won't even sell the team while you're still alive and have control over who buys it and where they move the team to. Why? because it makes your family more money to let the team's future play out after your death. Thanks Ralph.

Last night would have been a perfect venue to announce that because of his dedication to the fans and the city that he reached an agreement to sell majority control to an ownership group led by Kelly, Thomas, other Bills and whichever big money guy will back them (Jacobs?). All the players were present and RW could have brought them up to the deus. Imagine the reaction that would have gotten. What better way to go out than that. HOF induction, all your best players there, surrounded by your fans, announcing to the world that not only have you kept the Bills in Buffalo for 50 years but you have taken the steps necessary to keep there there indefinetly. Hell, keep a minority stake if you want to just in case they win so you get a ring or defray taxes in that way. Sell 50.1% now and 49.9 percent after you die. The tax hit is halved and we all get what we want.

Couldn't do that because as always, it's all about the Benjamins, baby.

Lengthy diatribes like this make the age of 140 character messages appear brilliant. Nobody ever said the Hall of Fame ceremony was intended to be a realistic, complete, unbiased review of everyone. (that hopefully gets taken care of in the selection process) It’s a day to honor the things that set the individual apart.

  6. One question...what was the point of telling us about games in Chicago where linemen were posted in the EZs to retreive footballs? I must have been drifting in and out, but I couldn't figure that out.

I think it was supposed to tie into the "you were brilliant if you could break even" bit. Perhaps an example of just how tight money was.

  7. I posted this last week on Sully.

"I've often felt Sullivan had a poor temperament as a sportswriter. He too often overreacts in both directions: He leads the coronations and he leads the lynch mobs.

A good solid sportswriter should be the voice of reason, a touchstone for his readers who overreact and who need a compass for direction and someone to provide perspective. Sully is not very good at this.

I also think he's a bit of a sh*t disturber too although I don't know if it's due to some unhappiness or bitterness.

It's possible that it's simply a function of the world we live in and that he feels he has to be provocative to help sell newspapers."

I would add that yes, he is critical but to a fault IMO.

And when things are going well he loses perspective and drinks the Kool Aid as much as anyone. He swings between extreme positions instead of holding down the center.

I saw that post. I agree. I appreciate that he isn't afriad to throw punches, but it loses its value when he doesn't balance it with other insightful comments. Saying the Bills aren't the greatest franchise going right now isn't terribly insightful... Sully would scream at his grandmother for napping at the family christmas party and tell everyone they should consider it an enormous slap in the face.

  8. I am. Have you ever heard that guy talk to the public? He sounds like a total prick and doesn't not have a good attitude. And apparently, he doesn't have a good reputation around the league unlike all these announcers would have you believe.

I find him to be a very subtle character. In the past there's been a lot of humor there if you're willing to see it. He isn't a cookie-cutter cheer-leading media darling, and I think he's getting a bad rap because of it. I don't think of him as having a bad attitude, I think his sense of humor may actually be similar to Jauron's.

It must be frustrating to be recognized by the league's players and coaches as an outstanding player, and have fans and media focus on sacks. Maybe he's a sensitive guy! As long as it affects his interviewing more than his play, I'm all for him throwing a line or two back at Sullivan.

  9. Heres what I wrote him:

Way to jab every Bills fan in the back with your "Toronto Bills" reference. You

are probably a loser Philly fan who "rules" at being a total douchebag. The

Bills have the best fans in the NFL - diehard fans who tailgate from Friday til

Sunday in some cases. You have no clue what real fans are in a real football

atmosphere until you visit Ralph Wilson Stadium. Yes, we have to "tap" to the

Toronto market because money rules and corporate sponsorship is essential in

today's NFL. But to leave the word "Buffalo" out of the "Buffalo Bills" is

idiotic. Have fun being a huge loser in the biggest loser town of all -

Phithadelphia Pennsylvania. I can rest assured that our Sabres and Bills will

always beat up on your loser teams as long as I live.

BUFFALO BILLS - #1 in the AFC and soon to be AFC champs. !@#$ing douchebag.

If that doesn't make him respect the intellect of a Bills fan I don't know what will.
