  1. Over the last 3 years SF and Buffalo have averaged between 61-62 offensive plays per game.

assuming Greg Roman is going to be pretty conservative with his play calling lets guess 60 plays

and run heavy 55% runs leaving him with 27 pass plays

if Tyrod plays 65% completion rate that gives him 17 or 18 completions... who gets the targets and catches?

    10 targets/6 receptions for Sammy

    5 targets/3 receptions for Woods

    3 targets/2 receptions for Harvin

    3 targets/2 receptions for Clay

    6 targets/5 receptions for RBS

    this would make me happy

  2. man wouldn't it be great if there was some sort of comparison to the greg roman power sweep or crash sweep in this video so we could see what the difference is between his brand of power running and say doug marrone's or chan's? is a sweep a sweep or is one different than another? "zone" blocking seems like such a vanilla term these days like saying Rex runs a 3-4.

  3. after reading this article about Oline age and experience I went through to see how the Bills line measures up.

    My link

assuming glenn pans out at LT (which is a big if)

we have a combined age of 130 (and if Pears the oldest on the line at 30 eventually gets replaced by Hariston or Sanders the line gets 7-8 years younger)

according to the article if the average number of of starts together gets above 50 for any given Oline they are almost always an elite line.

this year they will have an average starts (with the bills) of :22

that means that in only two years with a total age of 140 the bills line (if still together) will have an average of 50 starts and be 10 years younger than the point at which an oline declines because of age.

if you think about the DLine in two years still averaging under 30 yrs old and over 32 games experience shared

and the secondary in two years way under 30 yrs old and way over 32 games experience shared

Buddy has done his job for sure

He has built a team that can plug in draft talent at any position and have a veteran core that can support that raw talent and be competitive (talent wise) for years to come

  4. Good looking draft/53

can't be unhappy about the draft with these picks, the only thing that would be better is if there are some shenanigans in the top 9 and a true blue chipper drops to us

10 is a rough slot, it looks like the value of players available does not match the value of the 10th pick.

but that leads to a more important issue that the bills have not faced in a long long time...

the bills have obvious holes that need to be addressed in this draft, AND they have obvious depth that needs to be trimmed to get down to 53

when was the last time that the bills had such obvious depth along the DL and in the offensive backfield, while having solid starters across the board in every other starting position.

in reality, to field a team that is better on paper than last years starting 53 (before injuries) we really only need a LT that is as good as D. Bell.

After that I would say a #2 WR would be nice, an OLB would be nice and after that the bills are drafting for depth and ST.

After reading more and more of these posts I think that the consensus is that Nix and Buddy have done a great job in the 2 years they have had.

They have built a team that can compete on a yearly basis that has manageable turnover and a core of players that can be retained for years to come.

Now if they could just win a few games and make it to the playoffs....

Thanks for clicking! Over the weekend I used PFW's draft value chart, and put together a mock draft and my 53-man roster

Draft Disclaimer: I started by identifying our biggest needs as WR, OT, LB, and CB (in no particular order). I then made a 4x4 chart that laid out approximately which players would be available at each position in each round (basically a much smaller version of PFW's chart). I then ran through the different scenarios of addressing all of our needs in different orders. As in, what happens if we go OT-WR-LB-CB vs LB-OT-WR-CB vs CB-LB-WR-OT, etc etc...

Looking at all of the outcomes, I identified what I think is the draft that adds the most talent at each position of need. My final version looks like:

    1. Michael Floyd, WR Notre Dame (assuming Blackmon is gone or else he is the pick)

    2. Lavonte David, LB Nebraska

    3. Casey Hayward, CB Vanderbilt

    4a. Brandon Mosley, OT Auburn

4b. Josh Norman, CB Coastal Carolina

5a. Nate Potter, OT Boise St

5b. Demario Davis, LB Arkansas St

    6. Tank Carder, LB TCU

    7a. Marquis Maze, WR Alabama

7b. Andrew Datko, OT Florida St

While I really like this draft and these players, I'm not necessarily married to anyone specific. If you want to argue we should pick Wagner (OLB) in round 2 instead of David, fine. I'm not going to pretend to have a full scouting report on these guys. I wanted to address some needs of lesser priority, such as backup QB, but when looking at who might be available in the 5th-7th rounds, there just wasnt a QB available that was worth sacrificing a better player for.

    Final 53-Man Roster:

    Lindell, K

    Moorman, P

    Sanborn, LS

    Brown, C

    Wood, C

    Levitre, LG

    Urbik, RG

    Rinehart, G

    Hairston, LT

    Pears, RT

    Mosely, OT

    Potter, OT

    Caussin, TE

    Chandler, TE

    Smith, TE

    S. Johnson, WR

    Floyd, WR

    Nelson, WR

    edit:Rooselvelt, WR

    Easley, WR

    Jones, WR

    McIntyre, FB

    Choice, RB

    Jackson, RB

    Spiller, RB

    Fitzpatrick, QB

    Thigpen, QB

    Smith, QB/WR

    K Williams, DT

    Dareus, DT

    Edwards, DT

    Heard, DT

    edit: S. Johnson, DT/DE

    M Williams, DE

    Anderson, DE

    Kelsay, DE

    Merriman, DE

    Carrington, DE

    Sheppard, ILB

    Carder, ILB

    Barnett, OLB

    Morrison, OLB

    David, OLB

    Davis, LB

    Florence, CB

    Williams, CB

    McKelvin, CB

    Hayward, CB

    Rogers, CB

    Byrd, FS

    Norman, CB/FS

    Wilson, SS

    Searcy, SS

    Scott, S/LB

    Practice Squad:

    Maze, WR

    Datko, OL

    Jasper, G

    C White, OLB

I do not believe McGee makes it through camp healthy. Or it is at least obvious that he can not keep up anymore.

If Merriman doesnt make it through camp, I replace him with Batten/Eddins

If Easley doesnt make it through camp, I replace him with Aiken or Maze

Could also send CB-Norman to Practice Squad (Wilson backup FS, and Scott backup SS) and keep another player (like a 5th DT).

    What you think, folks?

  5. For the bills 60% is to low. The actual percentage should be around 90% because almost all of the bills draft picks are busts. I forget the exact number but the bills have only retained like 6/52 players from the drafts between 2001-2005

since 2004 4 of the bills draft picks are totally out of football (this includes kevin everett), 3 are currently free agents (were on an active roster last year) and 8 play for other teams, of all of these players JP Losman was the only one that was picked before the 4th round (excluding everett who was lost for obvious reasons) So out of 38 players that were drafted in the last 5 years 23 of those players still play for the Bills that is about a 60% retention for the last 5 years. to put this in context, NE has less than 50% retention, SD has the same as us, Pittsburgh has 51%, NYG have 71% MIA has 46%, KC has 46%

now don't get me wrong, we have fielded some pretty crappy teams in the last 5 years but to say that it is because we have bad drafts or bad retention of players would be a mistake.

  6. Yesterdays game was just a reminder of the last 3 years.

    A microcosm of mediocrity.

Preseason, regular season- same bad, passive coach who plays NOT to lose.

I've seen it enough to know that it won't change.

Unfortunately, the QB seems to be the same way.

    6-10.

after reading some of these sky are falling threads from the last two days I just cant believe that no one

has mentioned that the HOF game looked just like a scrimmage and NOT like a regular season game at all.

It looked to me as if the coaching staff was calling plays that would put the team into situations that they had worked on

    in practice.

    for example:

4th and short near the goal line

    short range field goal

    medium range field goal

    long range field goal

    new rules on kickoffs

    4 min defense

    2 min offense

    "strike zone" offense (run heavy)

    "strike zone" offense (pass heavy)

alright I agree strike zone is the lamest term ever BUT

they obviously were not playing to win

they were working on stuff that they had been practicing all week.

does this mean the team has no balls?

or does it mean that they have a lot of young/new players that need some time and practice learning a new system?

    or

    maybe I'm wrong

    8-8

  7. I agree that we should have these guys signed by now, but let's not forget that it's not only the FO decision to make, there's a second party they have to deal with: the agents who try to get the most out of that first contract

If the pick has been bracketed by two signed picks,

    really what is the issue?

does Byrd have anything to gain by holding out for an extra 10 grand in signing bonus?

there is so little wiggle room when the pick ahead and behind have signed, what is the deal?

I cannot believe that the FO takes Sundays off, I'm sure even god had a couple little things to take care of on his 7th day

  8. http://www.macsfootballblog.com/2009/04/20...ing-status.html

so picks 41 and 43 have signed.... where is Byrd?

what could take so long after the surrounding picks have signed?

picks 52 and 53 have signed and we NEED our two O Line picks in camp real bad...

how hard is it to get Levitre signed?

is the FO taking the weekend off?

    maybe they called in sick?

these guys should be in camp today....

    someones being lazy

  9. so AM has been tweeting a bit today about some business happenings...

"AaronMaybin58: OOOOOOhhh Snap...sooo much business is being done today...A.M. is gonna have to get it in tonight...hope the city is ready 4 me"

and then a couple hours later

"AaronMaybin58:IT HAS BEGUN...GET READY 2 CHECK UR POCKETS IN THE A.M.

about 1 hour ago from web"

possibly a signing in the works???

  10. The draft really made me upset! I study the draft several months in advance, buy all the draft magazines, look at all the mock drafts online, and prepare as if I had some input...lol....Just an obsessed fan I guess? Anyways, I was also upset when they passed on Orakapo. I also was certain they would go for Everette Brown DE at some point seeing that they had 3 opportunites to get him! They could have drafted Everette Brown and Brian Orakapo and probably solved the DE position for a long time! and still drafted an Offensive Lineman with one of their 3 first picks in rounds 1 and 2. I didn't like any of their picks until Shawn Nelson (TE). I also didn't like the way they handled the Philadelphia trade for J. Peters ! They should have been able to get Philly's 21st pick vice the 28th they got! I don't like any draft where at least 4 of your picks are likely going to shift positions because of different factors such as size or speed etc..... If your going to reach like they did with Levitre for instance then that player shouldn't be drafted to take a step into the unknown of switching positions. He is no lock to be a starter or successful with the switch. If you look at the Bills drafts from the past 5 years or even 7 or 8.

You see a trend of poor overall production and eventually the player often is either out of the league in 3 years or with another team. Reveiw the our draft and you will see just how poor our track record is. The Bills unfortunately try to be cute, and out-think the draft experts! I really believe if you handed me 3 draft magazines, and access to the internet that I could draft better than the Bills management does 9 out of 10 times. So, getting back to the beginning of this I would say without that Aaron Maybin may only be a situational defensive end and will never have the frame to sustain the NFL grind for more than 5 or 6 years tops!

since 2004: 4 of the bills draft picks are totally out of football (this includes kevin everett), 3 are currently free agents (were on an active roster last year) and 8 play for other teams, of all of these players JP Losman was the only one that was picked before the 4th round (excluding everett who was lost for obvious reasons) So out of 38 players that were drafted in the last 5 years 23 of those players still play for the Bills that is about a 60% retention for the last 5 years. to put this in context, NE has less than 50% retention, SD has the same as us, Pittsburgh has 51%, NYG have 71% MIA has 46%, KC has 46%

now don't get me wrong, we have fielded some pretty crappy teams in the last 5 years but to say that it is because we have bad drafts or bad retention of players would be a mistake.

  11. He lives on a nice street - that hosue would definitely be worth taking a look at. He might take less than market (and a lot less than he paid) just to get out of here. I think he lives off the street near Children's Hospital. If I could get his house for under $100k, I'd be OK with his wasted years and the Bills wasted investment.

JP's house is not for sale, and it is worth more than 500,000

comps on his street have been going for 700-1.3 in the last 5 years

so if you could pick it up for 100,000 you would probably be a Losmaniac for life
