Are we trying to make the defense bad?

Did you mean to say “trying to make the defense worse”?   They’re struggling and in need of changes.  The bigger problem is that our recent picks at linebacker and D line are not producing at a high level.   I won’t call them busts yet, but they’re not playing at a level you’d like your higher draft picks to be playing at.

The Bills effectively chose Tre White over a generational QB. Tre is good, but Mahomes is the best QB on the planet...

Would Mahomes really be doing that much better than Josh on this Bills team?  Swap QB’a and my money would be on KC with Josh, their players and Andy Reid.  What am I missing?  Our QB play is holding us back?

I think that is spot on other than I might argue Ryan and Stafford being in the latter camp. They are actually joint 4th in fourth quarter comebacks among active players behind only Brady, Brees and Ben. Yes, they have both been in the league longer than Russ (who is 7 behind them) and longer than Mahomes who no doubt will shoot up there but they have been in less time than Rivers and Rodgers who both trail them and a significant amount less time than Brady (who is only 8 ahead in 1st) . They have also both played with some pretty horrible defences. Even this season Matt Ryan has stood on the side watching a couple of DeAndre type moments as the Falcons manage to Falcon games away. Don't think it is fair to have them as anti-clutch. They might not quite have that "man I know this guy is going to get it done" but actually they have over their careers got it done plenty. They are somewhere in the middle IMO. Not complete clutch, but not anti-clutch either.

But the way you come out of Sunday feeling better about Josh Allen (and bizarrely I do) is that he played a pretty bad game. Comfortably his worst of the season IMO. I even thought after the 2nd pick when it cut to him on the bench that the glazed over look made its first appearance of 2020. And yet, when it came to the final drive when we had to have it he played his best football of the day by far and his decision making was absolutely on point and the throw to Stefon Diggs was perfection.

As you say every Quarterback is going to have bad plays and bad games. But it is a select few who can overcome that to do what Josh did in that drive. Okay, in the end it counted for nought - but it still leaves you walking away encouraged. Our guy can play like that.... and then when the moment was biggest he can play like THAT.

it benefits Mahomes greatly as a QB that defenses have to worry about KC’s running game. Josh isn’t perfect, but I think he’s playing extremely well given our OL’s struggles and the lack of a running game (not to mention no competent big man to throw to).  I think he can get a team to bowl, just maybe not this team this year.

It’s hilarious to read a few of the negative asshats that populate this board. If you can’t enjoy beating the Pats*, effectively ending their season, and improving to 6-2 then you are just a miserable person in general. Go wallow in your negativity while we enjoy a nice W and some positive vibes.

you have to love the insult crew.  It’s all cake, ribbons and rainbows, but that quickly turns to flame throwing if you don’t share their opinion.  ass hat?  Really?   I’m not apologizing for wanting to see a higher level of play from this group at this point the rebuild.  I’m thrilled you’re satisfied with what you’re seeing.

  5. No Brady, no Gilmore, no Edelman, all the missing pieces on Defense... That’s not progress.  That’s not taking a step toward being a legitimate playoff team.  Isn’t that what this year is about?  They’re not going anywhere playing like this.  They aren’t gaining any ground on the elite teams.  Is that win really a reason to celebrate?

  6. Agree about EJ. His decision making is just too slow. Can't have that. You can't really teach that stuff. Dude grounds the ball or runs out of bounds on 3rd and longs. Terrible.

i give Marrone and co. Another year or two. I have faith in them.

I agree about giving them another year or two, but for different reasons. I just don't think a coaching change will make much of a difference. Where I have a problem with Marrone and Co. is that they were part of the decision to draft Manuel. No issue if you want to take a project QB in the 3rd round or later, but you can't waste a first round pick on a "raw talent". These types of decisions are what have kept the Bills in the schitt house for 14 years. Get the drafts right and the rest will take care of it's self.

  7. I would suggest that every draft pick made by every team is an example of "we know something everyone else doesn't." Nothing is guaranteed -- particularly not at the QB position. It is simply too soon to make an assessment on EJ.

This kid -- and yes, EJ is still a kid -- has played 6 games of football against NFL pros. He had a bad day against one of the greatest defensive coaches in history. Time to throw that baby out with the bathwater all right.

The Pop-Tart mentality of so many on this board is frustrating.

So he was consensus first round 16th over all pick? Did you watch the game yesterday? I'm not looking for greatness here, but I guess were seeing something entirely different up to this point. I'm looking for signs that that greatness will develop and I stand by my statement that he was drafted way too high. Does the fact that he clearly hasn't outplayed 2 undrafted QB's tell you anything? I'm not ripping the kid, but I am ripping him being picked where he was.
  8. It's funny the extremes from the bust crowd to the apologists. He could still be a great quarterback someday, we simply don't know right now. My issue is with management drafting him where he was drafted. This type of "we know something everyone else doesn't" mentality has kept this franchise in a state of mediocrity for years. You simply can't get cute with the draft.

  9. You simply don't draft a project at the 16th pick of the first round. I agree with the positive comments about his demeanor, character, athleticism, etc. That's all great and hopefully it translates into competent NFL quarterback someday, but he's clearly not an NFL ready quarterback right now. You can find plenty of "potential" in later rounds. This pick represents the arrogance incompetence of our coaches and management. I personally don't even care about mistakes and losses at this point, I just want to be entertained when I watch on Sunday. For this to happen, I'd have to see Manuel making the kind of throws and plays that that get you excited and give you hope for the future. Yes it's his first game back, but that performance was awful. At the very least he shouldn't have been out there if he wasn't ready to play. Nothing about his performance suggested he was.

  10. The people that want to automatically hand EJ the job back when he's healthy are NUTS!! I think he was doing fine for a rookie and he's got plenty of potential, but Lewis is playing at least as well with a fraction of the preparation in this offense. If Lewis doesn't progress over the next 4-6 weeks that obviously plays into the equation, but it's not as simple as wins and losses. I really like what Manuel is about, but there are big holes in his game that didn't improve much in the time he had as a starter. Competition is a good thing and life just aint fair sometimes.

  11. He didn't look like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, but I think he looked fine for a rookie in his 4th NFL game. Peyton Manning threw 28 interceptions In his rookie year. Let EJ make his mistakes and figure it out. Everyone knew he was somewhat raw, but he was drafted where he was for his upside. I think he's shown poise and potential beyond what I expected at this point.

  12. How is what he did any worse than a player jumping into the stands? I'm not a fan of "excessive" celebrations, but "Happy New Year" on a shirt and now we criminalize the guy? I guess we assume he knew it was going to draw a penalty. There are players in the NFL that have hit people with cars and shot people, but we want to run SJ out of town for this? The guys still one of our better weapons and well probably let him walk so he can go become someone elses 1000 yrd problem child.
