1. I think it is not unreasonable to figure McCargo as being done as a contributor the Bills this year.  The good news is that it sounds like though this is a serious problem (anything that requires suegery to fix it with an indefinite recovery time is serious IMHO) it sounds like he can make a full recovery from this injury at some point.

However, when one factors in that he is a rookie who is still learning the game who at best was holding his own as a plsyer and was not a dominating factor, what this injury will cost him is intensive playing time he could use to get better.

It appears that evem if his recovery went well and he and the trainers put the pedal to the metal and rushed him back ASAP, the season would be well into the second half before he could conceivably contribute.

I hope he does come back to play this year, but I hope this for his development as a player and not for any particular team need.

It all depends on what bone was broken and the severity of the fracture.

I once broke my 5th metatarcil bone(called a Jones Fracture).I didn't need surgury, but I had to be on crutches for THREE months,It took a long time to heal because the fracture site does not get good blood flow. This was the same injury suufered by Micheal Bennett when he was with the Vikings.Sad to say,but it also ended the career of Bill Walton

  2. I had no problem with anything the coaches tried to do today. This loss was a failure of execution at every level. Every player is a goat, except for maybe Lee Evans, who was the only guy who came to play. McGee probably had his worst game as a pro, Clements gets deked on every quick out, Shelton and Peters can't stand still, Losman made some inaccurate passes right into bears defenders, and Peerless couldn't catch a cold today. The defensive line couldn't stop a so-so runner, and the only linebacker out there giving up his body was Fletcher, as usual. This was one of those games that got out of hand early and changed the way we were forced to play. Team loss. Worst performance by the Bills since that rout by the Chargers. Or maybe the rout by NE last year.

They gave up on the run when we fell behind 13- 0 in the second quarter. That's way too early

  3. Ummm...I've been watching this putrid offensive line for several years now.  I'm not basing it on one game.  It's built mostly on rejects from other teams like our 2 starters from the Bears (not even good teams).  Forget about the 3 secs for sacks, which are open to some discussion, but there was, once again, absolutely no push or running lanes created...the same thing we've seen for the last several years.

I do follow football.  I've been a season ticket holder (section 311) for about 10 years now and would like to see the team win, that's why I threw out the ideas.

What's with the personal attacks?  If you don't like my suggestions, then you could simply disagree, or better yet, offer a few of your own....unless of course, you don't think there's any problems with this team?

For the record, I do think the team's improved, I just think it needs more improvement.

I think LABillz point is that it's more than coincidence that you posted this after last night's game. Why didn't you post before the game.I also think you're a bit too reactionary.

  4. The Tampa 2 needs a solid safety and all we had was Coy Wire and a mediocre FA so I have no problem with going for Whitner.  We certainly needed a DT and if we missed on McCargo, there was a huge drop in quality to the next guy.  I know a lot of people think he would have been there for us in the second but that is pure speculation.  The guy is a player, every bit as good as Bunkley and Ngata with probably more upside than either of them.  I think there was a good chance he would have been gone.

I am disappointed we are letting the OL fester for another year (unless we get lucky with the FA's we signed) but you can't fix everything all at once.  We absolutely needed a DT and a SS and we got two very good prospects.  As for the CB in the third, I guess they don't think much of King or Greer for that matter.  I really don't get that pick but the first two were solid enough.

    676763

Not that don't they don't think much of King/Greer,it just makes Nate more expendable

  5. I have to admit I was friggin suprised by the 1st 2 picks. Mike Mayock from NFL network called the Whitner pick in his Mock yesterday and I thought he was smokin something.

Alot of people here wanted McCargo in the 2nd anyway and I am not disappointed with any of our 3 picks. I thought they could have traded down and got more picks but who knows. Apparently he fits our new scheme to a tee.

I wasn't real upset with the trade up (it essentially cost us 1 3rd rounder) the Steelers got a much worse deal one pick earlier. Nobody can really judge a draft until a few years down the line. To say it was really that good or bad is foolish.

These are definetley not the players I would have picked but I am also not naive enough to think that I would have done a better job. Passing on Winston Justice was not popular but probably better in the long run.

Time to welcome these new guys to the Bills. After all if it bothers you that bad go cheer for the Eagles...they got who most people on this board wanted.  :)

    677058

Why do you think passing on Winston Justice is probably better in the long run?

  6. Kiper is never wrong, remember how he blasted us for taking Fina in the 1st round in the same year his #2 & #3 ranked OTs were Eugene Chung & Siupeli Malamala.  Since Chung was picked earlier, Kiper would have applauded the pick if he was available & we took him in the Fina spot.  He probably would have cheered Malamala if Polian had picked him over Fina.

For the record, whether you liked him or not, Fina had a much better career than Mel's #2-3 rated tackles in 1992.

WGR has been the voice of reason today, stating repeatedly that guys like Kiper, who Marv's critics are using as their basis to blast our picks, are never held accountable for their opinions after the draft ends.

For the record, a lot of "experts" had McCargo going exactly where the Bills picked him.

    676031

Please be specific-who were the experts that had Mccargo going at 26?

  7. The point of it is that we have a lot of needs. Giving up a 3rd in a deep draft to move up 15 spots for a guy that might have lasted until the 3rd is brutal.

    675627

Unlikely to last to us in the third

    I wouldn't call it "brutal"

I like the fact that we are willing to go by our convictions and not the concensus

  8. Losman is NOT RESPECTED in the locker room.

I am sure the players have expressed their opinions to the new coaches and management. The team doesn't believe they can win with him.

Losman was Donahoe's baby. The new regime has no loyalty to Losman as a draft pick they must justify or defend.

The possibility of trading Losman does not surprise me at all. The problem is that he has no tradeable value at this point.

Moulds was completely frustrated by the failure of the Bills to address the QB problem and the OL problem.

The frustration was seen many times in the past where Moulds was quoted as saying how disappointed he was that the Bills couldn't find a decent QB to get him the ball since Jim Kelly left the team. He often commented how nice it would have been for him to be in a situation where he could build a long term partnership with one QB (i.e. Kelly-Reed, Montana-Rice, etc.)

Now that he is nearing the end of his career, he is hoping for once last chance to establish some kind of legacy for his playing career. He is convinced it won't be in Buffalo.

    645915

According to your logic, you feel very secure with Kelly Holcomb.Apparently the players think they can win with Holcomb because they havn't expressed there opinions to management to the contrary.

  9. Just thinking out loud here.

Jauron being up on stage by himself would probably be a tough sell, at that very moment, to the fanbase and the media who currently favor Sherman.

If Jauron came out with Capers and Caldwell behind him, the immediate reaction would switch from fury to people rationalizing the setup.

Sherman would bring Bates to run the D and many of his old staff members. He would not wish to have many current Bills asst. coaches ( still under contract ) thrust upon him. Capers and Caldwell wouldn't be on his staff, so it seems. So he had to make a strong pitch for his plan on Wed. Granted, he may still indeed be the guy.

Jauron would be more open to suggestions for asst. coaches. Some of Mularkeys staff would likely stay, with Jauron as the hire. I'm sure he'd be thrilled to have a Capers and Caldwell on his staff. Marv favoring Jauron probably isn't a reach.

    Hmmm...

Maybe that rumored disagreement between Ralph ( Sherman ) and Marv ( Jauron ) isn't too off the mark.  So Marv surprises everyone with Capers and Caldwell on Friday...but to ask them to work for Jauron ?

Is this the actual setup Marv and Ralph are discussing ? HC Sherman/DC Bates and Co. vs. HC Jauron/DC Capers/OC Caldwell and Co. ?

    Interesting.

    576495

Or maybe Jauron is going to work for Capers

  10. As we all know it's all about the salary cap.  To keep Moulds we would have to pay SO MUCH MONEY.  This would cripple our chances of resigning other good players on this team.  Don't get me wrong I would love to have Moulds back next year as a mentor to our wide recievers but I think he will be gone and will likely be picked up by the Eagles, since the don't have a Wr core.  It's sad, a player who has been so loyal to us Bills fans likely leaving for good.  If this happens Evans will obviously be #1 and likely Parrish #2.  The ONLY two good things that Evans has that Moulds doesn't have anymore is young age and quickness.  Moulds is getting older so he's not as quick as he used to be.  I hope he comes back but it's looking more likely he won't be back.  How sad.  If he's gone, then all I have to say is thank you Moulds for all the great memories. :w00t:

    567680

I've been a fan of Moulds since he's been a Bill, but it's funny,I don't think that there have been all that many "great" memories.

  11. Big Mistake #1 - Marv says he hopes to retain several of the assistant coaches.  Are you KIDDING me?  If TD ever made a statement like that (before the head coach was in place), he'd be run out of town on a rail and labelled as arrogant and power hungry!  So our GM, and not head coach, is picking the assistants?  Boy, that will really make the Bills head coaching job attractive!

In reflecting on this a bit, I think Levy is NOT arrogant and power hungry, but his mistake is he was thinking/speaking like a coach and not as a GM.  Deep down he wants to coach this team - and this has negative implications not only for the next coach of the Bills, but also for the quality of the job Marv will do as GM.

Which leads me to BIG mistake #2.  Minutes after Ralph says Marv is "absolutely not" a candidate for head coach, Levy refuses to rule it out.  Not only does this appear to be the height of arrogance to contradict the owner in public, but in saying this Marv has just cast a PERMANENT shadow over the next Bills HC as long as Marv stays as GM.  Again, upon reflection, I don't believe Marv purposely upstaged his friend, he's too classy to do that.  I think Marv just fancies himself as a coach, and couldn't bring himself to take himself out of the running.

Obviously Ralph's hiring of Marv as GM was a direct reaction to the isolation Ralph felt from the operation while TD was in charge.  Ralph reached out to a trusted friend and rejected the conventional super-GM type that he hired in TD.  But in doing so, Ralph rushed into offering Marv the job, not realizing Marv still held coaching aspirations.  After seeing yesterday's press conference, I don't think that Marv has (yet) fully thought through the GM job, nor has he given up his desire to coach again.  I fear this organization will be rudderless unless/until Marv can get his mind around the fact that he is not going to coach this team.  And I also fear that will be a really big hurdle for Marv to get over - in fact, he may never get over it.

    566555

Settledown.Games are still going to be one and lost based on the action on the field, not what's said in press conferences

  12. Not so much lazy thinking (of which I can do pretty well at times  ), but more of an effort to think along the same lines as Ralph.......especially when you factor in the financial aspect of the situation.

Buyouts are not cheap, so making a change and limiting the financial damage of the move is an attractive option, IMO.

A change is needed, for sure................Modrak is not a bad option.  Maybe not the best, but better then the status quo.

    Mike

    549077

Disagree. Modrak is the status quo

  13. I wouldn't be too excited if our big offseason "re-structuring" was TD leaving and Modrak being promoted.  I have a hard time believing that all the personnel moves would have been awesome if only TD had listened to Modrak.

    549059

How do you know TD didn't listen to Modrak? What was Modrak being paid for?

  14. It appears that the Bills, if they draft well (largely dependent on who the next GM is) can go a long way towards fixing a lot of the issues on the OL and DL (our biggest areas of need).

We have four of the first seventy two picks, when you factor in the high third round pick that we "stole" from the Titans (for lunk head Travis).    Include some money saved by reworking contracts (or dropping them all together), like Moulds (love you Eric, but you are overpaid now) and Mike Williams.

That cache of picks, plus the money available under the cap for Free Agency should be used on both lines, period.  We have solid skill players on offense, and a pretty good back seven on defense.      Bulk up both lines and I think we are right back in the mix (and JP will actually have some time to look for a secondary receiver).

If the rumors are true, and TD is gone, why not give Modrak the job?    He has been here for a few years and is familiar with the team, the remaining staff and of course, Ralph.    It would be a cheaper way to fill the slot, since he is already on the books, right?

More on Modrak..........if he is truly the man (assuming he inherits the GM job), I look to the Eagles teams he had a hand in developing.    In other words, he is really good at what he does, when he has final say (unlike the past few seasons).

Modrak (drawing on the Eagles philosophy), may not be enamored with overpaying veterans.    Say goodbye Nate, Jeff Posey and maybe Lawyer Milloy............oh, and take Mike Williams with you.    We can do better with younger players, or up and coming Free Agents.

I am still waiting for McGahee (and his butt head agent) to start clamoring for a new contract.............I hope I am wrong, but I can see this coming in the next few months.

Losing to the Jets hurts, but I would rather pick 8th, after an otherwise lost season.

Financially, Mularky stays................but I am not a fan and he is going to be on a short leash from this point foward.    I do see a request from upper management for changes within his coaching staff, starting with the offensive coordinator.    Could we see Sam Wyche taking over that side of the ball?

Angelo Crowell, who will take Posey's place next year, will be a stud.      A LB corp of TKO, Fletcher and Crowell looks nice to me.

The 2006 schedule (yes, I know the order and such is yet to be determined), looks like it not as tough as 2005's slate.    With a good offseason (and please God, better lines), I am looking foward to next year.

Here's to that, and to all of you here on the Wall.................Mike

    549031

Lazy thinking regarding Modrak.Looking to the success of the Eagles to make a judgement on Modrak is no different than looking at the success of the Steelers to make a judgement on Tom D. Tom D wasn't making his decisions in a vacum,he was leaning heavily on Modrak advice. Modrak is old .We need someone a younger and energetic.Besides,I don't trust the judgement of anyone that passes on Ricky Williams over Donovan McNab regardless of 20 20 hindsight tells us.Say No to Tom Modrak.

  15. Did this quote on the biggest play by a Defender this entire year for the Bills say a heck of a lot about how these DB's are Coached, and the Defensive philosophy?

McGee said; "I was hanging back, but I had seen that when (Palmer) had some pressure he was going to try and throw it short. I just took a gamble, cause I was supposed to be more back...I just took a gamble and it worked..."

Certain Bills DB's get destroyed in the area of Public opinion, but the play McGee made, the BIG play, is not necessarily the way he was Coached...Notice he says "I was supposed to be more back..." He took a gamble...

Just thought that was interesting...

    542337

Yes.... I presume you are referring to the similiar gamble Clements in a pretty similar situation last season and lost.He was villified for it

  16. Problem with this theory, if it's a theory, is that losman hasn't proven that he can be even a serviceable backup in this league, while palmer has proven that he's a winner.

I still suspect that JP is a coach killer. I hope it's not true, but he shows classic signs of being a good practice QB. He doesn't do the most important things well:

    > He doesn't see the field well.

    > He doesn't have good accuracy.

    > He overracts to pressure, be it real or phantom.

    > He doesn't exhibit good decision making under duress or in critical situations.

I'll be patient with him, but it's obvious that Holcomb should have started this season and who knows where we'd be right now if he had.

    541996

What are the classic signs of being a good practice QB?How do you get see JP practice? Is there a way I can see him practice also? Thanks

  17. San Diego won this game with a lights-out performance by its front seven on defense. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips had a brilliant game plan, stuffing the run early, and then throwing everything he could at the Colts' usually sturdy offensive line and Peyton Manning. Edgerrin James was bottled up and a non factor with 25 rushing yards. Manning was harassed all day, sacked four times and picked off twice.

In my opinion, letting Wade go was the biggest mistake this organization has made in the last 7 years, and no I'm not kidding, I've felt that since he was here and since he left. He could flat out coach and the players fought hard for him. He makes some statement on TV that his team it out of the playoffs and the fans want to villify him. I always thought it was a bit shortsighted by fans, who knows what he tells his team and I'm sure I wouldn't be telling the TV reporter the same thing I'm telling my Team. I don't understand how the quitter label can be put on this guy when his team was 0-3 and made the play offs, and back them we could actually remember what a comeback was!

    537096

Funny how you should happen to bring it up after this game.

  18. as head coach and GM and President of the Bills what will they do to get the fans back on their side?

It will be interesting to see how the GM, who cares more about the bottom line because of his President title, will change things up this offseason. I believe he should relinquish one of his titles because being both GM and President is a conflict of interest. He is trying to show RW that he can make a buck and at the same time bringing in players on the cheap hurting his own abilities to bring in top level talent. Since TD has gotten here he has signed a bunch of nobodies, with the exception of TKO and London Fletcher of course. Other than those two players, name me a top tier free agent that TD has brought in.

These are the names of the Free agents that come to mind. Rian Lindell, Trey Teague, Eugene Robinson, Mike Gandy, Bennie Anderson, Jeff Posey, Chris Villarial, Sam Adams, Lawyer Milloy and Troy Vincent. The latter of the group seeing their best days in the rear view mirror. Hardly world beaters to say the least.

To make amends for this TD will have to fire John Guy. Someone needs to be tha fall guy and this guy (no pun intended) will be the scape goat. TD also has to go out and sign some bona fide ballers. Having parades, talking big and unveiling new jerseys won't cut it this time around.

And now for Mike Mularkey. MM will have a lot to prove as well but he can't do anything in the offseason to get the fans to show support. The only thing he can do is get to work even harder this year and come back mentally tougher. He already has a built in excuse for this season. New QB and injuries and a whole lot of bad luck so he deserves one more chance.

Firing TD might not be so bad after all if he follows the script I just laid out. Changing GM's might set this organization back even further.

    535821

Why are you letting Tom Modrak off the hook?

  19. Jim Fassel, why because i don't really want to see another OC or DC come in here and just go through the motions so to speak, this is a team full of vets, and we need a coach that has Head coached before.  the list is short, Mike Ditka-is an idiot, jimmy johnson doesn't like the cold, and Marv is too old,  Jim Fassel brought an undertalented giants team to the super bowl, he was Loved by his players.

that is what we need, someone that doesn't have to prove themself and will get instant respect from the players.

    534770

I live in NYC and watced Fassel's tenure. In my view,he's OC material at best. His image/personality is too weak/mediocre to be a head coach. There were always rumors that the players were running amuck in the locker room. That's why they loved him.I view his superbowl year as an abberation.I'd be really disappointed if we brought in Fassel as HC.

  20. Norv turner will never get another HC job again.  He turned Randy Moss into a mediocre receiver this year.

The only two guys on that list worth a damn are Fassel and Kiffin.  Kubiak and Saunders are overrated.  Rhodes already has two tries as a HC and failed twice.

    533386

No way to Fassel. He's OC material at best. As head coach he's weak to mediocre at best.I've had enough of mediocrity.
