  1. I like that we're a lot younger and have purged some cap bloat.

I can't evaluate the draft till we see these guys play a lot of real games. Hope Coleman is a difference maker; IF he turns out to be a JAG this draft as a failed opportunity will help usher Beane out the door at some point. Not saying he is a JAG but IF... This draft was THE draft, with added capital from the Diggs trade, to get Josh a bona fide weapon.

  2. I am not certain but would hope that the McBeane leash is getting shorter. How long does a regime with a QB like Josh have to accomplish some real playoff success? I would hope that's not a 10-12 year trial period.

I hope the Bills succeed this year, with Coleman and all the staff, but if they don't, and especially if other WRs we passed by have great success, I would hope Josh flexes his leverage and demands some kind of change. I think with an in the shadows owner who doesn't seem to know football deeply that the only person who can really make substantive change happen is a relatively young superstar QB.

This year should be telling. But maybe we underperform in the playoffs (or God forbid, don't make them) and nothing changes. At a certain point, we need to go to a Super Bowl with Josh or move on from McBeane. When will either happen? The calendar pages are turning more quickly now...

  3. Won't do anything but the first pick:

I waffled between Legette and Thomas. For this exercise I'll go Legette for my pick as there's no trade required, but I think Thomas with a trade-up would've been inspiring as well.

I'm more than a little nervous that we didn't get an "explosive" guy in what was heralded as the best WR class in years. I don't think we'll need to wait two years necessarily; I bet by the end of this season we'll get a sense of what receivers are on track to be stars and who will be JAGs or busts. I certainly will root for Coleman, but I'm not super confident. But like almost everyone else, I'm just a bum on a fan board, not a a pro.

He's a rotational guy in McDermott's system.  He might be getting 40% of the defensive reps by season's end.  That's not half bad for a 3 round pick.

I wasn't keen on a taking a back-up in the third (Oliver will be the 3-tech starter for years to come) but this reasoning helps me understand it.

40% of the players, and insurance against injury to one of our top defensive players makes sense there.

  5. We don't know what Keon Coleman will be. He could be the second coming of Eric Moulds; he could be Kelvin Benjamin (post-Bills trade).

If he's good and has the potential to be a bona fide WR 2, at least, I think the draft will be viewed, at least from an offensive perspective, as decent to good.

But if Coleman struggles and looks over-drafted and one of Worthy or Legette looks to be a star (neither is guaranteed but it's possible) then I honestly think Josh or his agent says WTF and has a talk with Pegula.

We did not capitalize on the first half of Josh's prime; I believe management must show that things are different in the next year or two or they'll be gone. And I'm rooting for Coleman to be great. If he turns out to be a young Larry Fitzgerald or Moulds, I would love it. Not sure. Like most here I was underwhelmed with the Coleman pick but none of us are pro scouts. As with every draft, we won't know for a while.

  6. I had the same message as the OP at the time we traded to KC.

Then Carolina took Legette, the guy I wanted, and I drove immediately to my 24-hour Pitchforks R Us location.

Seriously, you likely couldn't stop KC from getting Worthy unless you pick him yourself and deviate from your draft board. Deviating from your draft board to try to stop your rival is nuts. If we would've done than, what if they would have taken Legette or Mitchell? What if Worthy busts but Legette or Mitchell doesn't? You can't do that. You must stick to your board.

But... it was brought up on WGR this morning: Beane's ability to draft WRs is in question. When so many other teams took guys in the first and Beane trades out, he's seeing guys vastly different from many other teams, including the champs. That's not reassuring. Beane could still be right, but he's positioning himself to be smarter than many other teams here and needs to vindicate himself with a good WR pick sometime soon.

My other concern: what is Josh thinking? That question is related to who we pick at WR. If we do not take a WR in the second in a class lauded as the best in years I honestly fear that will piss off Josh significantly. But that hasn't happened... yet.

His blocking in the run game is elite.  It's incredible to be honest.

Don't remember hearing that. Not a lot of young receivers can help in the run game. That's yet another reason to wait at 28 or even trade down a few spots (maybe; not sure if it's worth the risk) for Legette.

I wouldn't be opposed to a small move up for Thomas but keeping our picks and getting Legette is what I'm hoping for.

  8. Marino made some interesting points:

Negative: A lot of third-round value, in his estimation and he put in the work, but no third round pick.
Positive: The distribution of talent aligns a lot with Bills needs.
Board-meltdown: He doesn't like a lot of edge rushers after the first round so given the depth of WR in this class, he can see the reasoning behind taking an edge guy in the first and WR later.

Here is his board. It's notable not for particular names but to see the depth, or lack thereof, at certain positions and what kind of depth of round value for each position.

If you have a hard time reading it, dark blue is top of round 1, light blue is bottom half of round one, green is round 2, yellow is round 3, orange round 4/5 and red is round 6/7.
