Validation.  I just sent this link out to everybody who thought I was crazy at the party last night.  I said how the heck is that reviewable if Allen would've thrown a touchdown pass but the whistle blew?

It may be too nuanced, but the ability to negate lost yards would make sense. I could see why they may change the rule to allow the reversal of the yards lost and changing the pass to an incompletion, but not allow a completed pass to be awarded.

That might then create issues where you would have to be able to review intentional grounding in that situation

Interesting.  I thought for sure it was a reviewable play because most everything is when it comes to plays "governed by the boundary lines."  So I looked in the rule book and it is not.  The rule book specifically states this...

You can understand why it isn't reviewable though. If a QB is ruled to step out of bounds and the whistle is blown, but somehow completes the pass, you can't award a completion after the whistle has been blown. The defense may have stopped playing when they heard the whistle.

It's the same for a player being ruled out of bounds while running with the ball. You can't review it and then award him yards after the whistle was blown. The exception is as it pertains to first down or goal line, the player can be awarded up to 2 steps on review as it pertains to a first down or touchdown.

  3. I'm a Chiefs fan and just thought that I would chime in with what I know

In terms of mahomes being in the protocol, he will remain in the protocol until he is cleared, which takes days. He can't just be removed after video review. He showed signs of concussion on field, was placed in the protocol, so he has to clear the protocol like anyone

In regards to what you must do to clear protocol, some of it is subjective, in terms of reporting a lack of symptoms. The rest of it, as alluded to previously, is objectively observable. Word recall, balance, mathematical ability, etc.  It takes time because symptoms can take time to develop. Meaning, even if you pass your test right after the injury, if they feel like the injury looks significant on video, you remain in protocol because symptoms may later develop.

Someone also stated previously that you don't need to hit your head to have a concussion. This is absolutely correct, however you do need to have a acceleration injury on the head. An example would be whiplash. I just don't see in the replay Mahomes head undergoing significant acceleration.

in regards to what you can do to clear protocol more quickly

My personal opinion is that he had a brachial stun, causing him to be woozy when he stood up. He quickly recovered, sprinted to the locker room and was later reported to pass the initial tests.  to me, another sign that he is doing well is that he had access to his phone during the game. Typically you are placed on cognitive rest after a concussion, meaning no access to devices, TVs, loud noises, etc.

A lot of this is conjecture based on some personal knowledge, I have administered baseline concussive testing, and been in charge of patients with concussions in the past.
