  1. What a great article! For a long time I was pissed at Ralph. I always wanted him to come out and say that he would give a hometown discount or something to assure that the Bills would never leave. I thought he was pretty callous about saying that the Bills would be sold upon his death with no assurances that they would stay here.

Back then, I envisioned someday making a trip to piss on his grave for letting the Bills leave. Now, I believe that it was all posturing for the benefit of the league and the other owners. He had the team shackled to Buffalo all along. He just couldn't publicly say it. It really makes sense now and makes me feel terrible for doubting someone who always was committed to a city that was not even his home.

  2. Erie County taxpayers might be happy to see a Niagara Falls stadium. Erie County is paying over $100 million over the next 10 years towards the Ralph Stadium renovations plus all of their other game day costs that they are responsible for. Is Niagara County willing to pay the local costs of having the Bills in Niagara Falls? Seems like a lot of money to be spread over a much smaller county population. I don't know what the local share of a new stadium will be but it will be a hefty tab for Niagara County. Other counties don't currently share in Erie's expenses, so I doubt that Erie County will have to contribute towards expenses of a Niagara Falls stadium.

  3. I upgraded to Win8 and reverted back to Windows 7 after a couple of weeks. I just didn't see the point of the new interface unless you have a touch screen. One of the first things I installed was Pokki which is a free download which puts a start button on the desktop. In other words, it makes Windows 8 function more like Windows 7. There are a bunch of similar programs around that do the same thing. But if so many people are downloading something to make Windows 8 work more like Windows 7, maybe they should be using Windows 7 instead.

To me the apps ran slower than regular desktop programs. You even have to play Solitaire using an app rather than just opening the program from the desktop. Plus you have to sign in with your Microsoft ID in order to play. Once you start a game, it's hard to flip to another program while you are playing. For instance, say you want to listen to music with WinAmp while you play the Solitaire App, it's a hassle to change songs while playing the game. There's probably a way to do it, but none were apparent to me when I used it.

Another gripe I had was that until you change your preferences, your pictures, videos, music all open up in the Windows 8 apps and take you back to the Tile screen and the apps open in full-screen. Yes, you can figure out how to open 2 apps at once on your desktop which is great until you remember that in other windows versions you can have unlimited windows open.

I also found out that Windows 8 doesn't work with most scanner software. I scan quite a bit using my Brother printer and paperport software but Paperport does not work in Windows 8 or at least it didn't work in late 2012. I found a work around using another software but it was rather clunky. This was probably the main reason that I went back to Windows 7.

Also, I have always used the free Avast software for anti-virus. Although it installed fine, it caused my computer to crash several times a day until I finally uninstalled it and used Microsoft Essentials.

Unless you have a touchscreen computer, I can't see any compelling reason to use Windows 8.

  4. Thanks Paatmaann

Tough to say how much money it was, but it was enough to finally satiate Walt's hunger. As he stated, Grey Matter is now worth billions. Suffice it to say the pile of money was...a lot haha.

Hank's a smart guy. He knows this is a chess match and he knows the best thing he can do is to keep Walt unaware of his knowledge for the time being. That means keeping it secret from Marie, Walt Jr. and Skyler (ha!) too. He'll probably tell Gomez and they'll conduct an investigation on their own. We pretty much know that the government higher-ups would say "Ok, you have a book with a note in it. Get back to !@#$ing work."

Sage, I've also really enjoyed your weekly breakdown of the show!

It's going to be hard to investigate Walt if he is truly out. What other evidence can Hank use to prove Walt is Heisenberg? My money is on Hank going after Skylar. She will crack in about 30 seconds. She knows all about the money, Jesse, Saul.

I really don't think that Hank would be able to let Walt walk away. It's going to destroy Hank's family, but Walt has done a lot to destroy Hank's life. Chasing Heisenberg has resulted in his being shot and being crippled. He also now knows that Walt got into the accident on purpose when they were going to the laundry. Plus Hank now realizes that the "monster" he has been chasing has been hiding under his nose the whole time. The betrayal has to be immense.

My money is on Walt figuring it out before Hank can get to him and grabs what money he can and run. We are already 3 months into year 52 so Walt only has 9 months left to grow his hair back in time for his 52nd birthday breakfast. I also don't think that the m60 is needed for Hank. More likely, he is arming up for Declan and the Phoenix mob or Todd's uncle and the Neo-Nazis.

  5. One strange thing about the episode: The scene where Jesse says he has a problem getting the Methylamine is before Mike is planning to be in on it. Later when Mike is about to kill Lydia, he asks her if she can still get Methylamine. Then he calls Walt and says that he is in. Question: How did Mike know that Walt and Jesse would have a problem getting the Methylamine?

If Walt has gone as bad as he appears, would he possibly consider giving Hank a Ricin Cocktail? Hank seems to be the biggest risk that Walt, Jesse and Mike all have going forward. Isn't ricin undetectable? Seems like it would be a good way to get rid of him without the heat of killing a DEA agent. I'm looking forward to Hank chasing them for 14 more episodes, but wouldn't you think the thought might enter Heisenberg's mind?

  6. All I know is what the Irsay girls said.

Do you know if the Irsay girls know Pegula's daughters? Maybe Indy doesn't want to deal with Ralph, but this must mean that Pegula is buying the Bills very soon and I'm sure that they would deal with Pegula especially if the daughters are friends. Pegula as owner and Manning at QB. We really need to make this happen,

Maybe you can pass on the Pegula daughter's twitter account to the Irsay daughters. It would be awesome if this scenario played out. Let me know what you hear from them as I might want to go to Vegas and put money on the Bills to win next years Super Bowl while the odds are still long.

  7. "For example, say you purchase 100 shares of XYZ for $25 per share on Feb. 10. Nine days later, on Feb. 19, XYZ drops to $22 per share and you sell your 100 shares. You have a capital loss of $3 per share, or $300, which may be tax-deductible. If on Feb. 26 you bought the same security for $22.50 per share, this would be considered a wash sale because you sold and repurchased shares of the same stock within only a few days. Without the wash sale rule, the result would be that you could possibly have a tax deduction for your loss, but you would still own the shares, which is why it's sometimes called an "artificial" loss.

With the wash sale rule in place, the loss is deferred until the replacement shares are sold. In this example, that means your $300 loss would be added to your cost basis on the shares you repurchased on Feb. 26 to get an accurate capital gain/loss figure when you sell those shares."

This is from my scottrade account regarding wash sales...... So basically if you re-purchase the same amount of shares that you sold within 30 days of selling, your losses just get added into the cost of the shares you repurchased. So basically by the end of the year, if you have no shares, then it should all be squared and my net loss that is shown should be accurate and able to be deducted.... This is what i am trying to confirm.....I apologize for my redundancy in any of this....I am not an accountant by any stretch..... but thanks for the replies.

As long as you sold all of the shares by year end, you will be able to deduct the full loss this year. You can always use your turbotax from last year to verify it. Save your return under a new name and enter in the trades as if they were done in 2010 and verify that turbotax records the full loss on the sale. I always use the prior year turbotax to run what-ifs in the new tax year. Just make sure to check for tax law changes for the new year.

  8. What a fantastic episode! I was just about cheering as Hector hit his bell to blow up Gus. Then to see Gus walk out of the room was unreal. And the final reveal of the plant on Walt's patio...just awesome!

To me, it almost seemed like a series finale rather than a season finale. They seemed to wrap up so much...killing off Gus, blowing up the lab, Don Eladio's group is gone, Hector is gone.

I'm sure they will come up with some brilliant stuff next year but I have no idea what it will be.

  9. Can somebody please explain to me why the talking heads are bringing up Palin's alleged daliance with Rice when she wasn't married so much more than her alleged affair after she got married?

Not sure about the talking heads but it sure is bound to piss off women sportscasters and sports reporters. At the time, Palin was a sports reporter covering the basketball tournament that Rice was playing in. I guess she was trying for some "in-depth" coverage.

  10. I have a Snapper rear engine rider with a mulching blade. Same mower that Forrest Gump had in the movie. Mows great, fun to ride, and very high quality. The one I have has a pull start instead of a battery start...one less thing to go wrong. It's a lot smaller than most of the lawn tractors. Mine has a 30" cut. It's not a zero turn mower but I don't have too many trees to mow around.

  11. I think that the whole "fairness" thing has more to do with the fact that we got into this mess because of a ballooning deficit caused by excessive spending on social programs, defense spending for 2 wars and the Bush tax cuts which by the way were supposed to sunset in 2010. Each of these these had a significant impact on the deficit. Yet when it comes time to fix the deficit, one party signs a pledge that no matter how many trillions need to be cut, it has to all come from spending on social programs.

Even if ethanol subsidies don't make any sense, because their repeal would take away a tax deduction, one party has decided it is untouchable.

The same with farm subsidies, oil subsidies and the other corporate welfare that company lobbyist have bought and paid for. Is this "fair" that they can't contribute to the solution?

One of the provisions of the agreement is for the elimination of subsidies loan interest for graduate school. Sounds reasonable to me. But at the same time, several Republican congressmen are protecting the huge pipeline of federal financial aid funds going to the for-profit college industry. Have you seen how much money in pell grants and student loan subsidies is going towards printing these worthless degrees? Where's the Tea Party on that one?

People keep bringing up how 50% of taxpayers don't pay any taxes. The largest cause of this is the Bush tax cuts. With the expansion of child tax credits, American Opportunity Credits, Earned Income credits and others, lots of people making $60k pay no taxes. Maybe the Bush tax cuts need to sunset for all, which is what the Republicans voted for when the bill originally passed.

2011 isn't a good time to enact sweeping spending cuts or tax increases as we sit on the edge of another recession. But any "serious" long-term solution should include both.

  12. My wifes uncle is in upper management for Tops and I had this discussion with him at one point. Wegmans model is lower everyday prices so if you don't want to shop the sales then you're better of there. Tops generally has higher prices, but they have great sales where you can really save. Tops makes up for it by drawing you in with the sales banking that you'll buy a few other items while you're there. All depends on how much time you want to spend shopping. I prefer Wegmans because I don't want to worry about price, just get me in and out.

Exactly. Wegmans using an everyday low price strategy and Tops uses a "High/Low" strategy where most grocery items are priced at MSRP and then certain items are deeply discounted.

Wegmans tries to draw you in with the lower grocery prices and tries to sell a higher mix of the perimeter departments (produce, bakery, prepared foods, floral, etc) where margins are higher. For example, gross margins may vary from 18% in grocery to 65% in the bakery.

  13. I might feel slightly different if the mother was in a facility nearby, but she's in Myrtle Beach and the father and kids are in Calif. If her parents wanted their daughter to have access to the kids why did they move her 3,000 miles away?

I don't see how you can force a guy to pack up the triplets and travel that far on a regular basis to visit her.

Sounds like the parents need to move on and let her die peacefully.

  14. The big problem with jewelry is the tremendous markup at retail.

A number of years ago I filed a claim for my wife's diamond earrings that were lost or stolen. I had an appraisal stating a value of $1500. What the insurance company did was used the description of the earrings to locate a similar pair at some wholesale jeweler that they used. Their jeweler would sell a similar set to me for $600. So the insurance company gave me the option of a check for $100 ($600 replacement less my $500 deductible) or I could pay the $500 deductible and they would replace the earrings.

To answer your question: I don't think they have a percentage that they use to adjust your estimate. More likely they will use your description to find a similar item and pay you the wholesale value less your deductible.
