I felt way worse after 13 seconds and cincy. KC was better than us and we fought and somehow had ball with chance to win it.  With the right changes, future is bright.

I don’t know how the future is bright. This was the most vulnerable Chiefs team in years, we got them AT HOME, and we performed worse than we did two years ago.  Our safeties aren’t as good as they were a couple of years ago (same goes for Diggs).

There are bright spots (better running game, Kincaid, shakir), but we can’t beat KC or Cincy when it matters, and the rest of the field (Houston, Jacksonville, Miami, Pittsburgh, Cleveland) are all gaining on us.

We're the better team, anyone watching noticed. At least last night

Despite the score we were the better team on o and d.

special teams and officials didn't go our way unfortunately,  Eagles got more luck

When they start handing out championship rings for being the “better team” with fewer points, I’ll get excited.  Until then, I don’t see any value in being “the better team.”  And I no longer believe our horrendous record in close games is a matter of “luck.”

  3. I too have been defending McD (mostly because I remember how bad things were from 2000-2016...and I've been fearful of returning to those days).  But this coach cannot win close games, and playoff games are frequently close.  No way we can win a championship if we can't win close games.  If you know that you can't win a championship with a guy, then it's time to move on.

We just keep losing close games in the exact same way.  As soon as Philly went up by 4, who wasn't predicting that we would score a TD to go up 3 and that we would give up a game tying FG.  It was soooo predictable.

Ah, it was a dumb call. Think it through.
3rd and 10 with about 140 to go.

Letthem gain 8 ot 9. Protect the 1st down line.

if they kick a fg, we have time to drive down the field for a gw fg.

provided there are no bonehead penalties b

It was 3rd and 10 with :35 to go.  If we let them get 8-9 yards, that takes the clock to about :30.  Bills probably call TO.  Broncos kick a FG, leaving :25 on the clock?  Not much time to drive down the field.

Except that the Bills have averaged less than 18 points per game the last 3 times they have played the Saleh led Jets?

Yes, that was kind of my point.  Just winning over the Jets and getting to 6-5 does nothing for getting "back in."  So the answer to the OP's question would be "no."  If, however, the Bills do something spectacular against the Jets (which they have not done recently and is highly unlikely) then there would be reason for some optimism.

    The season was fun.

Blowout wins over Rams, Titans, and Steelers were fun.  A big win over KC and a come from behind win over Baltimore was fun.  That was all in the first 6 weeks.  After that was largely frustration.

losses to jets and Minnesota; close wins over Browns, Lions, jets, Dolphins  were frustrating.  4 weeks ago we were up by 1 score against the bears with under 5:00 left to go in the game.  They were the worst team in the league and we struggled to beat them.    2 weeks ago we were losing to the patriots at halftime.

We thought we were an elite team, but we couldn’t assert dominance over anyone after week 6.  So I’d say 2/3 of the season was frustrating.

This loss probably doesn't even rank in the top 10 of toughest playoff losses.

Suggesting it is worse than last year is mind boggling imo. That team had a real shot at winning it all.

I never felt this team had a very good shot. Slow starts and inconsistency. Too many bad teams hung around to the end of games. Seemed to be no killer instinct.

People have rose colored glasses on when it comes to last years team.  Last year we were 7-6 before and won 4 straight to finish 11-6.  We looked amazing in the playoffs (as good as any team in the league).

this year’s regular season (inconsistent and shaky as it was) was still better than last years.

Nah, last year was way worse.  They were paper tigers this year.  I'm not surprised or nearly as upset as I was last year.

That is exactly why this is worse.  Last year was heartbreaking, but we had caught up to KC as arguably the best team in the NFL (but for that 13 seconds).  There was so much reason for optimism.

This year we learn that we are a distant 3rd best in the AFC. Jacksonville is for real, chargers are getting better, Pittsburgh won’t be down for long (they went 9-8 with a rookie QB), and Miami and Jets were tough opponents for us.  What’s there to be optimistic about?

At the end of last year, I was thinking it’s just a matter of time (maybe this year) where we win a superbowl.  At the end of this year, I think a Super Bowl win May never happen…because like you said…we’re paper tigers.

My guess (and it’s literally just a guess) is they cancel the game completely and decide seeding by win %. Bills get 2nd seed.

That's my guess as well.  It would be nice (but would never happen) that if KC and the Bills met in the AFC Championship game, they would play at a neutral field.  I hate to have to go to KC again because of this unprecedented situation.

The only way that they could resume the game this week is if they play it Tuesday (and since the Bills are on their way back to Orchard park, it doesn't look like that will happen).  They can't play a game on Wednesday or later and then play again the following Sunday.

  10. Agree that they needed to eat some clock, but I don't have a problem with the pass on 1st down.  It was a check down, very reliable short completion (which was, in fact, completed).  Then there was a false start that penalty that effed everything up.  Facing a 2nd and 13, they weren't confident that they could pick up the 1st down running the ball.

  11. Yes, the team is still stacked with talent, but so are the Chiefs.  After beating the defending Súper bowl champs, Tennessee, and KC, we had ourselves in prime position to be the #1 seed.  If we fail to get it, and we lose a road playoff game, we can say that this game ruined our season.

We’ll be thinking about this loss and the season-long repercussions for the next 3 months.  Going for a walk and having a beer won’t stop that

    - We as a team seem to have removed QB sneak from the play book. We never run it. Ever. See this tweet for how I feel about that. Hard to think that’s not a directive from the top, seeing that two separate OC’s refuse to call it.

Disagree with much of the original post, but this part is spot on.  I remember a time when Allen was 14 out of 15 in converting 3rd/4th and 1 situations with a QB sneak.  Since the "slip" in Tennessee last year, I don't think that they have called it even once.  Today it was 2nd and goal from the 1 foot line!  And they have Josh in shotgun, standing on the 5 yard line and have him run...for a 2 yard loss.  Run a QB sneak for goodness sake!  All he has to do is reach for 1-1.5 feet and break the plane and he doesn't even have to protect the ball because if it gets knocked out once the plane is broken, it doesn't matter.

There were plenty of mistakes in this game that were not coaching related.  For the most part, I'm happy with the coaching.  But this downright refusal to run the QB is a consistent mistake that the coaches are making.  Hell even Matt Ryan converted one today.

  13. Want to talk about history repeating?  I was a freshman in high school when the bills lost the AFC championship game to Cincy.  32 years later…my son is a freshman in high school when the Bills lose the AFC championship to KC.

I was a sophomore when the Bills lose a heartbreaker in the division round to Cleveland (Ronnie Harmon drop).  32 years later and my son is a sophomore when the Bills lose this heartbreaker in the divisional round.

He’s receiving the same scars at the same age that I was.

I didn’t celebrate with 13 seconds left, did you watch our defense?? They were a joke today.

That was when I was the most nervous.  Remember the USS Indianapolis speech in Jaws? And how after fending off sharks for three days, Quint was most frightened when he finally saw the rescue helicopter?

  15. Agreed.  As bad as the defense was in the last :13, I could almost forgive an exhausted defense against a powerful offense.  I can't forgive stupid.  I don't understand how guys can devote their lives to a sport and then not know the simple things that any fan knows.

Compare him to the best coaches the league has seen over the last 20 years, that's the true reference point.

Is he terrible?  No.  Is he great?  No.  Can he beat the best when the most is on the line?  Probably not!

Can he be replaced with a new regime that is just as good and even better?  Who knows!

Okay, compare him to Andy Reid, who won a SuperBowl (with his second team) after being a head coach for more than 20 years? Or Cowher (who did it in his 13th season?) Or Dungy (who won it in his 12th season, and on his second team)? Or Arians (who won it in his 9th season, on his second team)?  Plenty of people questioned/doubted whether they could beat the best when the most was on the line...until they did it.  McDermott is in year 5.  If we compare him to these guys, he's ahead of the curve.

I personally loved this strategy. I would guess that 9/10 possessions for the Titans started at or before the 25. The lone exception being the one in the 4th quarter.

Hated the strategy.  Titans’ drives (Following a kickoff) started at the

    10 (due to titans penalty)

    21

    24

    21

    19

    33 (due to bills penalty)

    35

the only way you pin them deep is if they commit a penalty.  If you get them before the 25, it’s a negligible 1-6 yards behind it. Meanwhile, we give them 7 chances to return on deep or for a TD.

  18. Why would anyone call for Barkley?  Of Allen's turnovers, one was a fluke that hit off Beasley's shin, one was a batted ball that just happened to pop into the air.  He was moving the ball well and was always poised.  It never even occurred to me to take him out.
