It would have helped tremendously when we had 1st down on the KC 27 yard line for our OC and Head coach to tell Josh, listen man, we DONT want a touchdown right now, we want the next first down. We're already in FG range but our kicker has been erratic and we need to keep Mahomes on the bench, so just move the chains, we'll use the timeouts if we need to but this possession ends with us kicking a last second FG from the 10 yard line or getting a TD in the final seconds to win it.

I'm not saying McD didn't say that to Josh, but knowing him and the way he freezes up at the end of halves/games it never got said. Brady is an interim OC and probably is just thinking, how do we score asap? and Josh is the same way, he goes balls out.

These are the moments where a strategy can win you the game. Look for the underneath stuff Josh, it's a higher percentage play and we don't want the kill shot now anyway because KC has timeouts and we can't seem to stop Mahomes today.

If that gets said, he looks for Diggs wide open underneath instead of Shakir in the end zone, we move the chains, reduce the length of the kick by a lot and then play small ball until the clock winds down and then we take our shots to win it. Worst case it's a chip shot and we go to OT.   In other words, even if he hits Shakir for that touchdown I still think we lose that game, Mahomes with 2 minutes and multiple timeouts.

Its something that your QB isn't going to think about, he's listening for the next play and trying to process the field stuff, you need strategy from your HC to feed him game management along the way.  That was a situation that called for small ball, high percentage, control the clock and kill time, but instead we're calling plays for endzone shots like there's only 20 seconds left

We need someone to manage our team during the games that sits next to our OC and can talk to Josh.  McD is a team leader/motivator not a strategic thinker, the OC has a tactical call the next play role, where is the strategist?  We lost because we didn't have one.

That play was posted on Twitter last night from the sky judge view behind Allen.  Watching that, it looks like Shakir was the primary target on the play.  I’m going to guess that the Bills were waiting to call this play - setting this scenario up.  I say that because when Shakir got to the 10, the Safety turns his hips to the corner so they must have run that corner route multiple times already.  The second Allen saw the safety do that, he started to throw, knowing Shakir was going to the post and would be wide open.

At this point, Dawkins was a good 5ish feet away from Allen.  It was a clean pocket when Allen started to throw.  By the time Allen’s backswing is at its peak, Dawkins is now a foot or two away from Allen.  Allen can’t move his lead foot because of this.  As the ball is leaving Allen’s hand, he gets bumped enough where his body moves to the right, ultimately causing the incompletion.

It’s a bit like analyzing the Zapruder film.  But that sky judge view is in high enough quality where you can break it down frame by frame and see everything that happened.  It’s was 100% the right play call and right decision by all parties involved.  They needed Dawkins to hold his block for 1/2 a second longer.

Very nice post. I agree with the vast majority of your statements. You are especially spot on when it comes to McD. Zero growth when it comes playoff time. No confidence he can lead the Bills to a SB.

For me it wasn't SB or bust. Maybe it should have been. Probably should be when your in year 6 or 7 of Allen. Talk about missed opportunities. Understatement of the year. Personally, I would have been ok with them going to Baltimore and losing a tough game. Going to the AFC championship game vs what been the best team in the AFC would have been not the worst loss to swallow. Ultimately it's not the goal but I likely would have seen it as progress. Maybe I'm lying to myself. A SB appearance would have been fantastic and a clear successful season.

I agree with giving Allen a chance to win the game. However, I'm in disagreement with going for it on 4th and 8. It's kind of pick your poison. I think the chances of converting the 4th down was very slim. Interesting if there's a math equation or analytics that could give a clear picture. Taking into account the probability of making a 4th and 8th while taking into consideration make the FG while computing the chances of Mahomes leading the Chiefs to a game winning FG or TD. Pretty fascinating information here.

I digress, while watching it live I asked myself are the Bills in 4 down territory? Truthfully, I didn't know the answer until I saw the play calling. I think the Bills could have been more prudent and tried to make a more manageable 4th and 2 or 3. It's all arm chair QBing  here. I think your thoughts process absolutely applies here in a shorter more manageable 4th down.

I was fine with trying to convert the FG. In my mind, I felt like the game was already lost make or missed. There's no way any Bills' fan was confident that the D could stop Mahomes and company. However, lots of things can happen. A fumble, tipped ball for an int, strip sack, etc...in essence, praying for a miracle similar to the one the Bills received minutes before.

I don't know how this team moves forward with McD as the coach. His message has to be getting stale. The players belief in him has to be diminishing. Heck, the coach himself is probably lacking confidence. When is enough enough?

Running it back with a poor playoff coach who has shown an uncanny ability to lose divisional games with the top 3 QB in the league hardly inspires hope and optimism.

Fans should be knocking on the Pegula's door begging for a coaching change.

Yeah makes sense.  When I say the 4th down FG was the last straw for me I mean that just happened to be the last decision.  There were a ton more leading up to that point.  Fake punt, obsession with a middling run game, not running a play to gain a few yards on 3rd down for a more manageable 4th, etc.  I’d like to see that 3rd down play on an all 22 as, going off memory watching it live, I saw no receiver on the screen the broadcast allows us to see.  I know Allen was flushed out fairly early as well.  It just felt like a bad play call for the circumstances but I’m not certain.

For me, since all of these things lead up the 4th down play I’m like why are you kicking?  You have the ball and are in control.   This situation is why we drafted Allen.  If you want to win, you pick this up and continue dictating the terms of the rest of the game.  I agree with you that I’d love to see probability metrics there as well.  They had 27 first downs and last night I couldn’t find anything on the length of each first down.  4th down feels like it’s a super tall task because of the finality of it all.  But if you take a step back and look at the overall picture it’s meh it’s 8 yards and we have Josh Allen I like my odds.  It feels to me like McDermott bailed himself out of taking responsibility there.  It’s now not McDermott’s fault they lost.  It’s Bass’ fault for missing the kick.

I’m not here jumping up and down saying kicking it on 4th there is the worst idea ever and I know you are not saying the opposite.  It’s just for me personally I look at the entirety of the situation.  Defense stopped nothing.  We have Allen.  We have the ball and should be dictating the game at that point.  Instead of passively allowing Mahomes to dictate for the remaining 1:40.  Maybe McDermott thought he put Mahomes in the similar situation in the regular season game this year and won?  But they got real lucky that game and were certainly not playing anywhere near the defensive level yesterday vs that regular season game.

Anyways, my thoughts are all not absolutes.  There’s levels of gray in between all of this.  Bottom line we all have the same desires for this team all we see every year is failure.  And all those failures look pretty similar.

I'm not sure why this concept is so hard for Bills fans to understand.

McD isn't the answer to progress this team to a SB. How in the world people can't see it is unfathomable.

Next year the talk of the media will be how the Bills can't get it done. Same with the Cowboys.

Allen is the defining reason why the Bills should have reached at least one SB.

Because some people are afraid of success I guess and are just happy to see the Bills on national TV.  I'd like to see a Super Bowl win at some point in my life and have seen enough to know McDermott will not deliver.  I was convinced after the 13 seconds game and since then there has just been a lot more evidence piling on.  Of course I was happy they won the division and beat Pitt last week.  But that was just to dig them out of the huge hole McDermott's team building philosophy and in game blunders put them in.  For me, it was either SB victory or the unemployment line for McDermott.  I had seen enough.

I'm not sure how much more evidence is needed to replace McDermott.  Peterman, Houston playoff, wimpy AFCCG plan, 13 seconds, Denver game, Mac Jones 4 incompletions for the entire game, and today it was ultimately kicking the FG at the end of the game.  Why is 4th and 8 an insurmountable obstacle?  We have Josh Freaking Allen.  They needed 24 feet for a first down, just a little more than the width of the room I'm currently sitting in.  You kick a FG there and you hand the game to Mahomes.  When he said he learned his lesson after the AFCCG and needed to be more aggressive he again failed at a critical moment.  He played to lose again and make no mistake - even if Bass makes that kick they were losing.  The D couldn't stop them all game and McDermott said as much as his reason to go for the fake punt.  Yet at the final last grasp to stay in the game his idea was to tie the game, handing the ball back to Mahomes with plenty of time for them to win.   You pay Josh Allen 1/4 of $B dollars to win these games.  Put the ball in his hands.

I don't hate the man, I respect the heck of a job he did to get the franchise to this point.  Without McDermott and Daboll, Allen could have turned into Rosen or Darnold but they groomed him into the best player this franchise has ever had and will ever have.  And that's great but as I see many players on this team reach new heights of their abilities, I have not seen McDermott grow much at all.

Yeah no, I was mentally begging him the entire time to take the Diggs crosser, it's the right call there.  If you take the endzone strike there, it's gotta be perfect.  It's a tough throw, despite our QB being good enough to make it look easy most of the time.

Still thrilled to have him as our QB.  We were very close to pulling it off.  Just couldn't quite come up with all of the plays when we needed them.

I'll type slower for you.  Shakir was wide open.  In.  The.  Endzone.  Allen was hit as he released the ball.  The ball needed to travel about 43 air yards and travelled 42.  Even noodle arm Tua has more than enough arm to make this throw.

By your standards, every coach that did not advance their team to the conference championship should be fired.

This loss sucks.  I am as sick of losing to that punk Mahomes in the playoffs just like all of the Bills Mafia.  I just believe that McDermott is one of the best head coaches in our team's history.

It is absurd to call for the head coach to be fired after every loss.

What makes you think we will find a better coach if we do replace McDermott?

McDermott has us in the playoffs consistently.  The Bills are in the national spotlight.  And they are considered one of the top teams in the NFL each year.

You ignore all the successes McDermott has had with his time in Buffalo.

The Bills are not firing McDermott after this season.  With all the defensive injuries he has had to deal with, and beating several playoff teams during their 6 game winning streak.   This may be his best coaching season.

Also, name me a team that consistently beats the Chiefs in the playoffs?  There isn't one.  So why hold McDermott to an unrealistic standard?

Please accept that McDermott is not going anywhere.  He is not the problem.

A ham sandwich can coach this team into the playoffs with Allen at QB.

He almost did.  Then it was abandoned after the two-minute warning.

If Allen learned how to dink and dunk, and then punish defenses for dropping out of the Cover 2 shell to stop it he's be more or less unstoppable.  He was nearly unstoppable THIS game despite receiver drops, low overall yards/attempt, etc.  31 points on this Chiefs D despite no help in the field position department would have been an absurd feat.

Dude just stop.  You look like a complete idiot.  The end zone play was there.  It wasn't reckless, it wasn't a stupid decision, it was the right decision.  Allen got hit as he was throwing and couldn't put it where he wanted.  The receiver was wide open in the end zone.

If Allen throws it to Diggs and we still don't score on the drive I'm sure you would be the first person here saying Allen should have thrown the ball in the end zone when the play was there.  You should be wondering why we were at best playing for OT and most likely would have lost anyways in regulation.  There were still 2 more downs to pick up 8 yards.  Or why we constantly ran into the line on first down banging our heads into a brick wall when they were ripe for play action.  Or giving McDermott everything he wants on D to come up short again.  McDermott had the game he creams his boxers over - 186 yards rushing and dominating in time of possession.  And he still lost.

  7. Our best chance to get McDermott fired was for Bass to make the kick.  You know Mahomes would've gained the 40 yards he needed for KC to kick the winning FG.

It's a crime that we have the best player this organization has ever had and will ever have in Allen to only play in 1 AFCG in 6 years.  Next year they will be lucky to surpass 6 wins with their cap and age situation.  Burrow will be healthy, Miami isn't going anywhere and NE will have a shot at a potentially great QB.   Plus Rogers comes back for the Jets.

This was their last shot for a couple of years.  They're better off cleaning house now and regrouping.

The 84-86 red helmet with blue facemask are my favorites. I liked the shade of blue used on their jersey and always thought the blue facemask looked good.  A not too distant second is the 60 era throwbacks.

I hope to never ever see the Bledsoe era jerseys again and wish someone would edit them out of all archived footage.

  10. You all need to stop with this stupid take in this thread and the other one about Josh.  To somehow make up your mind that Josh no longer cares about football after watching a combined 5 seconds of sideline shots during a 3 hour game is complete insanity.

  11. After every big play or semi-big play I’m scanning the field looking for flags or waiting on a challenge.  That decent Eagles gain down the sideline in the first half that was over ruled on replay is what kills interest for me.

Too lazy to look up the receiver but he had at least 3 feet down (maybe 4) controls the ball all the way until he is out of bounds when he falls and the ball moves.   I have no idea at what point the process of a catch is completed and he becomes a runner.  Is it 5 steps, 50, or is it just made up on the go?

Was watching the game with my dad and he goes no way this is getting overturned.  I said yeah it is, look the ball moves and hits the ground.  Dad replies, but he had both feet down and possession and then goes out of bounds.   I said I agree but out of bounds doesn’t matter nor does the 2 feet down - the ball moves and hits the ground when he goes down.  It’s a catch by every logical standard including the naked eye.

I’m at the point where I wish they would get rid of replay or go sky judge full time.

  12. Cool video.  I love these season recaps from years gone by.  I was born in 74 so this was before my time but I thought I knew a good deal about Bills history - now I realize I didn't know enough.

Before I get to that - question that always had me curious.  Why in the Miami night game did they use a ball with stripes?  I've seen that ball in other NFL games as well.  Was it a rule that for night games a stripped ball had to be used?  Another thing that had me curious for years was it looks like the stripe was 3/4 a way around the ball?  Is that right?

    Other observations:

    • I had no idea Keith Lincoln ever played for the Bills.  I knew of the hit heard round the world by Stratton some years prior.
    • The old lineman 3 bar and long facemasks are awesome.  Some poster here has their avatar as one.  I always wanted to wear one playing youth football but my neck was never long enough and I'd complain that I couldn't look down when I wore it.  The angle they would protrude out at the bottom was so cool.
    • The fields looked terrible quick. Chunks of grass all over.
    • They seemed to play many more snow games than I would expect.  I would assume the season back then didn't drag on as long as it does today either.
    • I had no idea the Broncos wore just plain blue helmets.  A couple of times I thought they were the Oilers.
    • Also love the old horse collars.
    • I'm guessing some of the reason for future futility was I never heard of any of the draft picks touted at the end of the video.
  13. During the drought I emotionally divested myself from the Bills because they refused to move heaven and earth for an elite QB.  When quite literally your team is garbage unless you have one.  It upsets me when 10's of millions of dollars are spent on front office and coaching staffs and they refuse to do the logical items.  Of course I'd watch ever game and hope they would win but it was no big deal when they lost as I knew they weren't contenders.

Now we have that elite QB.  After 13 seconds (and the offseason that followed) I again emotionally divested myself from this organization because they refuse to give that elite QB any help.  What's more, 13 seconds was such an egregious coaching miscalculation that someone other than a scapegoat should have lost their job.  13 seconds was the equivalent of answering the question, "what is 2+2?"  McDermott/Frazier answered with 5.  If any one of us was in a career position for 20+ years and so badly failed at something so basic we embarrassed the company on a national stage, we would be fired on the spot.  The Bills instead gave McDermott/Frazier more toys on Defense to play with.

I've heard 3 years ago that we can't beat KC because they have Kelce and Hill.  Then this year we can't beat Cincy because they have 3 terrific passing weapons.   Instead of trying to acquire similar talent, the enormous egos running this organization thinks their defensive schemes are so much better than any other teams that that alone can stop them.  When we continually see evidence to the contrary.

So until this organization stops wasting a generational talent by asking him to be Superman every game and actually come up with a better defensive scheme than rushing 4, dropping 7 on near every play, I will watch and again hope they win but know they are not real contenders.

Ok, he's still only in his 6th year. How would you feel if we won it with him next year? Or the year after? Would that change your mind?

‘I’ve said it already in earlier replies. My pitchfork isn’t completely out yet for McDermott.

‘’everyone makes mistakes. But your ability to learn and grow from those mistakes makes someone great. Of course I would be happy if the Bills won the SB next year or the year after. But right now I have not seen ANY evidence that McDermott has learned from his previous playoff coaching mistakes. That’s what is very concerning to me.

Maybe the light switch clicks next year?  Maybe I win the lotto. How long do you want to wait and chew through a potential HOF QB talent in his prime?  In sports you can never say well next year is it.  Guys get older. Guys get injured. Guys don’t progress. Guys regress. We missed 3 prime opportunities to win a SB when we had the same level of talent as everyone. There is no guarantee we roll out the same talent level next year.

im not saying fire McDermott tomorrow. But I’m open at least to having the conversation.

My mind won't be changed because simply because you and other people think that all coaches o lyrics deserve 5 years with a successful team before letting someone go. Andy Reid, Tony Dungy, Bill Cowher. These are all HOF head coaches that won their Super Bowls later in their tenured but I would take any one of them including McDermott over firing him after just 6 seasons

‘the reason it took them so long is because they didn’t have a transcendent QB talent until later in their career.

We already have that. McDermott had that starting his 3rd year. Significantly earlier than those guys.

  16. 2 minutes ago, Buffalo03 said:

I'm well aware of the talent the Bills have. Some coaches take that talent to a Super Bowl in 5 years some do it in 7 or 8, some in 10 or longer, the great coaches get there. What I would like McDermott to do is fire Frazier and get a new OC but I am willing to give McDermott a couple more year at least

I absolutely agree with you on firing Frazier. He should’ve been gone after 13 seconds - assuming those defensive calls were his (which honestly I don’t know is a good assumption but whatever).

It’s obvious I will never change your mind and you will never change mine. Believe it or not my pitchfork isn’t sharpened at the ready for McDermott (I’ve been arguing against the length of time it can take when your team is already stacked with talent). As I said earlier he’s done some great things. I can get on board with riding McDermott out as long as Frazier is gone and someone on the sidelines is assigned with tackling McDermott if he ever tried to call a defensive timeout.

I acknowledged numerous times it took him over 20 years to win his first, in what way does that make you think I would go back to his 6th year in Philly when he clearly didn't win it then and by the way, if you fired him after his 6th year in KC, you may not get that Super Bowl he helped you win in year 7 or get back to it again in year 8

Marty Schottenheimer was 5-13 in the playoffs. McDermott is 4-5

I don’t know why you cannot understand this but for the past 3 years the Bills have had as much talent as any other team in the NFL. Bills have been SB favorites all year. And they didn’t show up today again.  I saw Cincy receivers wide open all game. I once again see no stunts on DL. They guessed wrong on blitzes and never got home. they were totally unprepared for what Cincy came with on both sides of the ball.  They got blown off the field at home. This falls on coaching staff.

wake me up the next time Reid calls a defensive timeout.

Yes I would. With Hall and Kelce. Absolutely. But you keep changing your argument. Reid’s 6th season was 14 years ago. Your argument is it takes a coach 20 years on the job to win it all.

‘McDermott has done some awesome things. He was absolutely the right coach at the time he was hired. These guys supposedly put in 80 hour weeks during the season. McDermott has been in football for a very long time. The time for him to learn should’ve ended after the AFC Championship loss. And while he’s improved in many areas he still comes up woefully short in game planning and execution during the playoffs.

‘so we will just draft another franchise QB in the first round 10 years from now and win it all?  The year Allen was drafted, 4 other first round QBs went. 3 of them are already on multiple teams.

mcDermott is not learning from his mistakes in big games. Defensive timeouts in back to back playoff weeks should be fireable offenses. So should playing your CB 10 yards off on 3rd and 4. It’s similar to guarding the sidelines in 13 seconds when KC had 2 timeouts.

your argument flat out fails. Allen is nearly on the same level as Mahomes. On paper the Bills have the best D of all the AFC teams in playoffs. Yet they got boat raced.  Again. McDermott has the same level of tools (minus Kelce) to work with as Reid does.
