Usually you trade your star player to the opposite conference,  KC traded him to the Dolphins thinking it could makes things more difficult for Bills to win division. Next thing is for both Jets & Pats to make big offseason splash moves. Not surprised if Pats throw big money at Julio Jones

I wouldn't be surprised if the Dolphins make a run at Baker.

I don’t get this trade for either of the teams.

the chiefs lose a key piece of the offense, and without him, they don’t win the divisional round. sure they get all those picks, but it’s hard to imagine anyone of them will have the impact that tyreek did.

the fish then trade all those picks and pay a fortune for a slot receiver with personal issues. And as we all have mentioned, Tua is BAD. He’s not very athletic, has a week arm, and is a poor leader. Remember that QB carousel with Fitzpatrick two seasons ago?

It was a flashy move with no substance. They MIGHT be competing for the 7th wild card. But idt they beat out any of the teams in the west division, especially since they have a rookie head coach who is a youngin.

The sum of the cap space and 5 picks will be greater than paying 30 mil per for a 28 year old and soon to be declining WR. I understand that for the Chiefs with cap issues.

I agree on the Dolphins. It does make them better but Tua isn't a good QB and he's made of glass. I wish they would have sent him to the Jets just to give him the finger for forcing his way out for $$.

  3. Chiefs Fan here.

I am torn about this. I woke up after a long midnight shift today to see my favorite Chiefs WR of all time get traded. He's still in his prime and was well on his way to being a HoF WR and one of the best duo's of all time. Jacksonville had to screw things up. The Raiders had to screw things up. Tyreek and the Chiefs were allegedly close on a deal until the market blew up.

Now that I'm calm, I do think this is ultimately a good thing for the Chiefs long term and potentially makes them better THIS year but we'll see. The truth is, the Chiefs have massive holes on the team and little cap space without converting Mahomes salary to a bonus (constructed contract to do this every year). They don't have CB's and their dline is one of the worst in the NFL. They have 2 LB's and that's it. Their WR room before the trade was better but still just Hill/JuJu/Hardemen. Kelce is getting up there. They have holes upon holes and no money and low draft picks. They have been getting a little bit worse each year since their SB win but this has been by far the worst roster before the Hill trade they've had.

I am not of giving 3rd contracts to players that aren't QB's. I'd rather trade a 28 YO WR who is at the end of his prime than pay him 28 million a year and screw the cap up. Especially if I can get 5 draft picks and clear 72 million in cap space over 3 years. Hill is a phenomenal WR with speed and athleticism I've only seen from Randy Moss at the WR position. However, last year he started showing signs of breaking down. He was injured a lot and to his credit, he played through it all. Is that a sign of him breaking down like I said or just coincidental? I doubt he will ever see the playoffs again as a Dolphin and I think his legacy will take a big hit, but I'm not sure if he will care much now that he's made his money and lives in Miami.

They have the cap space now and the picks to replenish the roster. They can get younger and fill the holes they couldn't before. If they draft anything close to what they did last year, this team is going to be scary good and the window is still open If Veach and company blows the draft then the window is likely closed for awhile. I strongly believe they will move up to take a pass rusher since they likely won't get an impact one at 29/30. This is a good draft for DE and WR as well.

I'm not sure how I feel about the Chiefs in the AFC West this year but I'm not ready to count them out with Mahomes/Reid. The off season just started for them after the trade. I do wish it happened a few weeks ago though...

  4. While it looks like there are cap issues going into next year there really isn't. The Chiefs designed the Mahomes contract (zero signing bonus) to have his contract able to convert salary to roster bonuses each year that frees up almost his entire cap hit for the year. The will do this until it's time to tear up the contract and make a new one. Additionally, Hill will be needing a new contract and they can significantly lower his cap hit. Same with Chris Jones, who also had no signing bonus.

The only FA they need to resign is Orlando Brown, who has overperformed many expectations. He had a rough start but has looked like a top 5 LT. They could tag him. I like Mathieu, but the Chiefs would be wise to let him walk. He had his worst year this year and is a twitter headcase. They will need to replace his leadership though because after he left the game the DB"s were confused and a mess.

Additionally, they will get two extra 3rd round picks for the GM hiring and if Eric Bienemy gets hired for a HC they get another 3rd round pick. (I disagree with this affirmative action type carrot-rule) If they can continue to draft even half as good as they did this last draft then they are going to be in the SB conversation for the next decade.

Agree 100%. And now the health situation is flipped. They are beat up and we are healthy. It’s going to be a battle but I like our odds.

They weren't healthy when they played you. They were missing, and are still missing, their starting LG, C, RG, RT. Their best CB is a rookie 4th rounder who's been a stud was out. He's back. CEH and Watkins have been injured for a few weeks but are likely going to play. CB Fenton, who may be the 2nd best CB on the team was out last week and may be back. He played the first game. Willie Gay, rookie 2nd rounder, didn't play much most of the season until the last few weeks is a stud but he was out last week. I hope he plays this week.

Obviously the most obvious and biggest impact will be Mahomes. If he plays this will be a good game and they will be about as healthy as they were during the first matchup. If he doesn't play then good luck in the SB because the Chiefs have no shot. I think he does play personally.

So in his presser today, McDermott got asked whether they would prepare differently for Henne and Mahomes and whether having Mahomes status uncertain changed things like, 3 or 4 times in 3 or 4 different ways.

McDermott made the point that KC has a lot of talent on the field and that neither the talent nor the system that uses that talent changes when Mahomes is out.

I can kind of see his point.  You don't have to prepare for the "That Freakin' Guy!" DC-throwing-notepad plays, but those are maybe 2-3 plays per game that you have to be able to surmount, the reason they're "That Freakin' Guy!" plays is that they're next to impossible to defend.

Hill, Kelce, Edwards-Helaire, and the rest of the talent are still there and the same scheming that helps them get open and exploit defenses are still there.

The Chiefs offense changes quite a bit with Mahomes. With lesser QB's like Alex Smith, Henne or Moore last season, they are a more typical Reid offense with a ton of screens, short passes and runs. With Mahomes they are much more timing based, down field throws and much more pass heavy. They haven't thrown as many screens either with Mahomes.

  7. If this type of QB success was predictable then teams would have been falling over each other to trade up to #1 to draft him. Teams would have Sucked-for-Mahomes like the Colts did for Luck. Obviously Reid and Co thought he'd be very good but no where near historically good, especially this fast. This is just the outcome when you have generational type talent meeting very good QB coaching and skill players around him.  The scary thing is that he's only 9 games into his career as a starter and he has so much room to grow.

I cant think of another QB in recent history who walked into a better situation than Mahomes.

Cullpepper is probably the closest situation. He sat a year behind Randal Cunningham and Jeff George then had 2 HoF in Chris Carter and Randy Moss, Probowl RB in Robert Smith and an offensive minded coach. He finished with 4k yards, 33 TD and 16 INT.

I agree with you that getting Fuller was the better trade by far.  Washington was dumb.

As for two teams saying no thanks to the QB's/seeing no day 1 starters, if Mahomes were in this draft, he also wouldn't be considered a day 1 starter and those 2 teams would still be making those trades, so I'm not sure what you're getting at here.

And do you think that Mahomes starting buys Reid another year if the Chefs don't make the playoffs (and they likely won't)?

I to would rather have Fuller and a 3rd than a high 2nd. Fuller is like a end of the 1st round pick that is a guarantee hit. The Chiefs need a starting #2 and slot CB badly. Hope he can fill the #2 but will be happy with the 2nd highest graded slot CB in the NFL at 22 years old.

No you are right, Mahomes wouldn't be considered a day one starter but I like him better than every QB in this class. All of them have warts, even Rosen, who is probably the only day one starter in the draft.

The Chiefs weren't likely in the playoffs this year with Smith starting. Their schedule is very difficult and they have significant issues on defense that they need to address. This trade makes the road a little easier to the playoffs because they improved on a huge need, cleared 15.6 mil (counting Fuller's added contract) in cap space to sign more help. Alex Smith isn't that hard to replace in this offense. Reid has proven he can plug below average QB's into his system and get Alex Smith type production. Plus, Reid just signed a huge 5 year extension. Clark Hunt isn't going to eat that money.

  10. Chiefs fan here.

    Sorry about your loss.

I've always been a fan of drafting QB until you hit on one. I hate retreads and other teams backups. It's been tough 25 years, for that reason, as a Chiefs fan. Looking at your roster and your season, I think you guys are in a win now mode. I'd trade a 2nd for Smith and trade up for a QB if your team likes one of them. Let your QB and Peterman, who I liked in the draft, sit for a year like Mahomes did.

I think your roster, overall, is probably better shape than the Chiefs going forward.

  11. There was a ton of hype going into this year about this QB class but I have serious concerns about each one of them. Rosen is definitely the most ready but his mental makup and injury history (concussions) scare the crap out of me. Darnold took a step back. Mayfield has average talent but great production. Allen has an intriguing arm but accuracy concerns always scare me. Jackson is intriguing but he's a project.

Last year I was against taking Trubisky high due to a serious lack of experience. I wasn't a fan of Watson due to his accuracy and arm strength. I loved Mahomes due to his arm strength, accuracy and mental makeup and I didn't care about the air raid stuff (Goff and Keenum are looking pretty good from an Air Raid system). Trubisky looked like a rookie but the Bears weren't doing him any favors. Watson gained a ton of garbage stats but far exceeded my expectations and may end up actually being a very good QB. Mahomes had only one game but looked much better than Trubisky has and looks like he could be very good but the jury is still out.

I still think, if a team loves a QB then they should take him unless they have an elite QB on the roster already.

  12. I am a fan of going for a QB until you find one. This league has proven that you need an elite QB to sustain real success. There are a few instances that you can get lucky with a average QB but most of the time it is the same QB's that are in the superbowl. Lots of Mannings, Brady's, Wilson, Big Ben.

    Last 10 Superbowls

    51 Brady vs Matt Ryan

    50 Manning vs Newton

    49 Brady vs Wilson

    48 Manning vs Wilson

47 Flacco vs Kaepernick (***WTF aberration)

    46 Brady vs Eli Manning

    45 Rodgers vs Roethlisberger

    44 Manning vs Brees

    43 Warner vs Roethlisberger

    42 Brady vs Eli Manning

41 Manning vs Rex Grossman (another headscratcher)

I know some people are wanting Smith. He's a good QB. Not a great one. He is the type of QB that needs a ton of talent around him to win and things to go right. He's good enough to consistently win 9-11 games but he's not elite. He has vision issues and below average pocket awareness and needs a strong coordinator. It's frustrating because multiple times a game there will be a wide open receiver behind the defense and he has no clue. He has shown, finally, that he can throw the deep ball this year but struggles with intermediate throws outside the hash marks. He is a great QB to stabilize a franchise until you can draft and develop a QB though. He's very tough and a team leader.

Regardless, if you trade for Smith or can land Cousins then hope you draft a QB to sit and learn and hope he is the real deal. If he isn't in a few years, draft another. As a Chiefs fan, I truly believe, that Mahomes will be special.  Every year since I could remember, I have always wished that they would take a chance at a QB and try until you hit.

  13. He looked great especially considering who his surrounding cast was.

Kareem Hunt had 1 run till they pulled him out to protect him.

Akeem Hunt had 4 carries before injured.

Their only running back was their FB.

Their WR core consisted of Albert Wilson, who wouldn't make most teams. Demarcus Robinson and Jehu Chesson (two practice squad players this year), De'Anthony Thomas, who is a converted RB and has been a huge bust.

Their Oline was full of backups.

TE was their backup who has notoriously bad hands.

There is officially at least 5 drops including 1 for a TD.

He made obvious 1 bad decision which was a deep pass on the game winning drive that amounts to a jump ball for his TE. I can kind of see the thought process on throwing a jump ball to the tallest player on the field, but it was unnecessary in that situation. He made one bad throw that sailed for the INT. He looked composed, confident, displayed pocket awareness and field vision. He was very accurate and made very good decisions like recognizing the blitz and getting the ball out quickly to his hot read. He was briefly taken out to get the 3rd string guy some reps, who coughed up a fumble and a 3 and out which let Denver back in the game. Mahomes came back for the game winning drive and won it.
